Brewery news USA, NY: New York brewing industry veterans create Return Brewing
A New York-based team of brewing industry veterans just announced the creation of Return Brewing, to debut in fall 2021, the Craft Brewing Business reported on June 22.

Returning to old-world craftsmanship while looking ahead toward paradigm-shifting innovation, Return Brewing represents the intersection of refined technical expertise and infinite exploration. The new concept is cofounded by Mikey Lenane, Jack Liakas and JD Linderman, who bring over two decades of collective experience at Brooklyn’s nationally lauded Sixpoint Brewery where they respectively led innovation, design and brewing.

The friends will each contribute their individual areas of expertise to all aspects of Return, with Lenane focusing on innovation and quality, Liakas on creative and design and Linderman heading up brewing. They are joined by Eric Bachli, formerly of Sixpoint and Boston’s destination Trillium Brewing Co., who is lending his expertise to the project as a strategic advisor.

Taking inspiration from traditional brewing techniques, global and historical fermentation methods, the experimental ingredient treatments coming out of the world’s leading kitchens, and the seasonal availability of the bounties of the Hudson Valley, Return’s offerings will comprise a number of distinct identities, including:

“TAVERN” beers which encompass:

• Accessible, quality-forward styles centering best-in-class ingredient sourcing and brewing technique

“GARDEN” beers which will:

• Feature ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AK: Construction starts on new home for Grace Ridge Brewing Company
Construction started earlier this month on a new home for Grace Ridge Brewing Company. Jay-Brant General Contractors have begun work on the 2,400-square-foot building on Smoky Bay Way off Lake Street that will include a production facility, a small tasting room, sales area and an outdoor beer garden, the Homer News reported on June 24.

“We’re hoping to have a nice outdoor area for people to sit in,” said brewmaster and co-owner Don Stead. “We’re hoping to be able to do some landscaping and provide a fire pit and outdoor tables.”

Stead is the majority partner in the family-run business that includes his wife, Sherry, and children Steven and Scott Stead. Grace Ridge Brewing opened in May 2016 in rented space next to the United Parcel Service warehouse. Coincidentally, its new location will be near the new UPS store. Grace Ridge is the second lower Kenai Peninsula brewery with the Homer Brewery on Lakeshore Drive.

At its new location, Grace Ridge Brewing will operate under the same conditions as its current alcoholic beverage license. It can sell beer and ales in 5-gallon kegs, growlers and cans to go, and allow for on-site consumption up to 36 ounces a person a day. Breweries cannot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Salt Rock Brewing Co. coming to Lansing later this summer
Salt Rock Brewing Co., a new brewpub restaurant coming to Lansing later this summer, is a long-term dream finally come true for couple and business partners Donna WIlliams and Steve Kelly, the City Pulse reported on June 24.

Kelly and Williams have a long shared history in the brewing and restaurant industries. Kelly spent significant time working as a personal chef in Costa Rica. Williams worked for more than a decade as a waitress, bartender and manager before becoming a nurse. “I like to say that we’re a power couple,” joked Williams.

The initial inspiration for finally purchasing a space and opening their own restaurant came from a chance moment on Williams’ old apartment balcony on Walnut Street, which overlooked much of downtown Lansing. The two noticed the large vacant building on Ionia Street — the longtime former home of Lucille Belen’s flower shop — that is now the home of Salt Rock Brewing Co. After securing the necessary funding and paperwork to purchase the building, Kelly and Williams decided on opening a brewpub and spent an entire summer gathering all of the necessary equipment from various sources across the country. Kelly has managed his own companies before, but this ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & USA: BrewDog opening an Atlanta location next year
Scotland-based craft beer giant BrewDog is opening an Atlanta location next year at the Stove Works complex just off of the Eastside Beltline in Inman Park, across from Krog Street Market. According to a press release, BrewDog’s 12,000-square-foot bar will feature 28 taps offering a few beers brewed on site, a beer school, outdoor seating, and serve pub food, Eater Atlanta reported on June 22.

Since its founding in 2007, the BrewDog brand has rapidly expanded to include brewpubs, breweries, and hotels in countries like Germany and Australia, and the United States in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

However, earlier in June, hundreds of former BrewDog employees accused the UK craft beer behemoth and owners James Watt and Martin Dickie of fostering a “culture of fear”, misrepresenting accomplishments on social media, and claiming the company is eco-friendly while possibly not conducting business in an eco-friendly manner.

In an open letter, published on the website “Punks With Purpose”, former staff members accused BrewDog of being “built on a cult of personality,” with many claiming the toxic work environment at the company caused “a significant number of people” to suffer from mental illness as a result.

Watt was called out personally for his part in the alleged ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Sockeye Brewing to open its second location in Boise next year
Sockeye Brewing will take over the large 36th Street Garden Center in Boise’s North End, with a huge 12,000 facility that it hopes will open next year, boisedev.com reported on June 24.

“Since we shuttered our location at Cole and Ustick, we have been on a deliberate search for a site that would make a statement and reflect the next chapter of Sockeye Brewing,” Sockeye business manager Janice Skinner said. “We are thrilled to have found a spot that’s not only beautiful but will be central to Boise’s foothills and well within reach of downtown and other portions of the Treasure Valley.”

The new Sockeye spot will complement the brewery’s flagship production and restaurant space on Fairview Ave. The 36th St. location will include a full restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, beer and wine service and an event space inside. The tap system will include more than two dozen handles.

Sockeye launched 25 years ago, and has seen a flurry of news of late. It moved an old Bench trolley to its Fairview site, completely rebranded its packaging, and now will work on the 36th St. location.

Sockeye will hold a two-day anniversary celebration with a concert at Expo Idaho on Friday, June ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Homewood Brewing Company to launch in former location of Vice District Brewing in Homewood
An agreement with Homewood Brewing Company, owned by the family of one of Homewood’s most talented sons, was approved by the village board on June 22, The Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle reported on June 23.

Owners Robert Lauderdale and Carmela Wallace spoke at the board meeting. Wallace’s son Jarad Higgins, better known as rapper Juice WRLD, died in 2019. He was a beloved cultural figure in the village and around the world.

“I’m from Homewood. Homewood is special to me,” she said. “(The brewery is) my way to pay tribute to (my son), as well. I was so happy to have the opportunity to come back to Homewood and serve the community.”

Homewood Brewing will open at the former location of Vice District Brewing at 18027 Dixie Highway downtown. Vice District announced in December 2019 that it was closing for good. Vice District's brewing equipment was sold after the business closed.

The business left a $20,000 mortgage obligation on the property for the village.

Homewood Brewing will pay the town that money when the purchase of the property is complete.

The village will reimburse owners that $20,000 if a series of criteria are met within 12 months.

The new owners estimate a $1.2 ...More info on site

Brewery news World: People eager to return to pre-Covid drinking – outgoing AB InBev CEO
Outgoing Anheuser-Busch InBev CEO Carlos Brito told CNBC on June 25 that people have been eager to return to pre-pandemic drinking routines as coronavirus vaccinations picked up across the U.S. and bars and restaurants faced fewer restrictions.

“Once vaccines were being rolled out, we saw some states ahead of others and we saw how consumers were reacting to this new normal,” Brito told “Squawk Box.” “And we saw that a lot of the new normal was just like the old normal in that people were dying to go back to old habits.”

Brito — who steps down July 1 after 15 years leading the world’s largest beer brewer — said AB InBev adjusted its supply chain to produce a more “normal balance” of bottles and draft beer, anticipating that home consumption would take a less prominent role.

The home had become the “hub” for living, entertainment and working all at once during the pandemic, Brito noted, commending the company for how it responded to that change.

“Our guys in supply chain, sales had to be very agile, very flexible,” Brito said. “There was a big shift in dislocation among channels, packaging, brands because consumers couldn’t buy in pubs and restaurants so they had ...More info on site

Brewery news World: PepsiCo pursues trademark for Rockstar-branded beer and hard seltzer
PepsiCo Inc. has filed a trademark application that indicates the company plans to sell alcoholic beverages under the “Rockstar” brand name, Bloomberg reported on June 25.

The food and beverage giant is seeking to register the name for beer, alcoholic fruit cocktail drinks, alcoholic malt beverages and hard seltzer, according to a June 14 filing. The application was filed under a provision that says PepsiCo plans to use the trademark for alcoholic beverages but hasn’t yet.

The move comes amid a wave of new alcoholic seltzers, including from Coca Cola Co., which has launched an alcoholic version of its popular Topo Chico mineral water.

In Pepsi’s third quarter earnings call in October, chief executive officer Ramon Laguarta said the company was thinking about its best options for alcoholic drinks and would “make a decision in the coming quarters.”

An email seeking comment from PepsiCo was not immediately returned.

The filing was noted on June 25 on Twitter by trademark specialist and lawyer Josh Gerben.

“The fact that PepsiCo made this filing signals they are very much considering a product launch around beer and hard seltzer,” Gerben said in a message.

Barley news France: Winter barley harvesting underway in France
An estimated 79% of the French soft wheat crop was in good or excellent condition in the week to June 21, down from 81% the previous week, farm office FranceAgriMer said on June 25.

Brewery news UK & Ireland: Diageo doesn’t expect pub sales volume to return to 2019 levels until at least next year
Diageo’s business in the North does not expect the volume of alcohol it sells in pubs to return to 2019 levels until at least next year, the company said in recently filed accounts, the Irish Times reported on June 24.

The accounts for Diageo Northern Ireland Limited report that in the group’s “severe but plausible” scenario “we do not anticipate that the on-trade business recovers to volumes experienced in the year ending 30th June, 2020, within the next 18-month period”.

In order to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, management at the company could take several measures, including the reduction of non-essential overheads, directors said in commentary accompanying the report.

In the 12-month period reported in this set of accounts the group reduced its marketing expenses alone by almost 36 per cent to £3.75 million (€4.37 mln) .

During the 12-month period, profits fell from £3.4 million to £2.6 million, a drop of more than 23 per cent.

Overall, the company which owns the Guinness brand had an “unfavourable financial year” owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, with turnover slipping by more than £10 million.

The company recorded turnover of £134 million in the 12 months to the end of June 2020, down from £144 million ...More info on site

Whisky news Asia: Sales of single malt Scotch in Asia duty free down by 52% since start of Covid-19 pandemic
Sales of single malt Scotch in Asia duty free have fallen by 52% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data from Whyte & Mackay.

The Dalmore owner highlighted that the single malt sector has remained ‘resilient’ in the face of the coronavirus crisis when compared with other categories, such as Cognac (which witnessed a 58% drop in sales) and blended Scotch (which plummeted by 78%).

Single malt is nearly as big as blended Scotch in Asia duty free, Whyte & Mackay said, accounting for 22% of the market.

Whyte & Mackay is the third-biggest single malt whisky supplier in Asia travel retail, driven by The Dalmore, which is now the region’s number-three malt by value.

Clarisse Daniels, head of marketing for travel retail at Whyte & Mackay, said: “The single malt sector has been incredibly resilient throughout the past year. We have seen incredible pent-up demand and spend at duty free zones across Asia, and prestige brands such as The Dalmore have been driving that demand.

“The challenge is to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for our rare collections, so we are pleased to reveal that the travel retail exclusive The Dalmore Ensemble collection is launching in the region after enthusiastic ...More info on site
