USA: Beer sales heat up ahead of July 4th holiday
|
While there continues to be so much focus on the still hot hard seltzer market, it's good old-fashioned beer sales that arguably deserve some more attention as the demand for suds picks back up amid the reopening of bars and restaurants from the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yahoo Finance reported on July 1.
"On-premise draft beer trends continue to improve," pointed out Goldman Sachs analyst Jason English in a note on July 1 looking at re-opening trends in the U.S. economy. To make his observation, English's team sliced and diced new data out of tech insights company BeerBoard. The outfit's technology assesses about $1 billion in bar sales and 60,000 products across the U.S.
English found that the percent of locations open and pouring beer stood at 92% for the weekend of June 17 to 20, up from 90% in January. The percentage of taps pouring beer ticked up to 71% for the weekend, up from 70% in the two weekends prior. Total volume of beer served per location rose 1% sequentially nationwide.

USA: Constellation Brands boosts full-year forecast after quarterly beer sales increase 14%
|
Constellation Brands stock rose on June 30 after the spirits maker boosted its full-year forecast.
Constellation said it lost $908.1 million, or $4.74 a share in its fiscal first quarter, compared with a 94-cent loss in the year-ago period. On an adjusted basis, which strips out nonrecurring items, earnings per share were $2.33. Revenue climbed 3.3% to $2.03 billion. Analysts were looking for EPS of $2.35 on revenue of $2.02 billion.
For the full year, Constellation now expects to earn an adjusted $10 to $10.30 a share in fiscal 2022, up from a previous range of $9.95 to $10.25 a share and above the $10.06 consensus estimate.
Constellation stock rose 1.3% to $234 in recent trading.
Although profits were slightly below expectations, strong sales were a theme in the quarter. Beer sales, including its Corona and Modelo brands, were up 14% year over year to $1.57 billion, offsetting a 22% decline in sales of wine and spirits. Beer depletions, which track how quickly beer leaves the distributor for retailers, were a robust 10.7%, nearly mirroring pre-pandemic levels. Constellation expects beer sales to climb between 7% and 9% for the full year.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria purchases industrial asset in Ikeja to scale up its operations

Guinness Nigeria Plc has acquired a 10-hectare strategic industrial asset in the heart of Ikeja industrial hub as the Diageo subsidiary plans to scale up its operations in Nigeria, The Nation reported on July 2.
The industrial asset is a 10-hectare property in the Ikeja industrial hub of Lagos State. The multi-billion-naira asset which formerly belonged to Universal Steel Limited was acquired by Guinness for the purpose of expanding its operational base in Nigeria.
The acquisition process which kicked off in 2020 was eventually consummated in June 2021. Investment One Financial Services Limited, an investment banking and asset management company arranged the acquisition for Guinness Nigeria from its private clients.
Group Executive Director, Capital Management Division, Ademola Aofolaju, said Investment One played a pivotal role in making the deal happen noting that the deal was very significant to the company as it clearly reaffirms its transactional capabilities.

Canada: Canada barley seeded area estimate below March forecast
|
Statistics Canada released their updated 2021 seeded area estimates on June 29 putting barley seeded area at 8.296 mln acres (3.36 mln hectares) - an increase of 9.7% over 2020 seeded area, but below their March estimate of 8.613 mln acres (3.49 mln ha). The estimates in their Principal Field Crop Areas June report are based on a survey of producers conducted in May and June.
In their last outlook report on June 17, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada used average yields of 70 bushels/acre, coupled with earlier StatCan area estimates, to forecast a 12.0 mln tonne barley crop for Canada. Keeping the 70 bushel yield, and using the new area estimates with typical abandonment rates, would imply an 11.5 mln tonne barley crop. However with current severe dryness and heat being experienced across the Prairies, yield prospects in many areas are diminishing quickly, and without precipitation in the very near future Canada’s barley crop may end up below the 2020 output of 10.7 mln tonnes.

Australia: Feed barley exports increase by 32%, malting drop by 11% in May
|
Australia exported 808,285 tonnes of feed barley in May, up 32 per cent from 610,758 tonnes shipped in April, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Malting barley exports in May dipped to 66,019 tonnes, down 11pc from the 74,068 tonnes shipped in April, and the sorghum volume also waned over May to 123,424 tonnes, down 16pc from 146,764 tonnes in April.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said May showed another strong month of demand for feed barley, with a continuation of business to Middle East and Asian destinations.
“The much-rumoured Iranian barley business has finally shown up on the numbers, with more cargo a possibility considering price spreads and the tight old-crop market in Germany,” Mr Roache said.
“Iran is a premium destination due to financing and execution limitations from certain countries, with the bulk of the Panamax-size execution usually loaded ex Germany.
“Iran hasn’t featured in bulk size ex Australia since 2016 and was sporadic at best before that.”
May shipments to Saudi Arabia have come in on the low side due to limited buying in April-May which followed a stocking up in the first quarter prior to the kingdom’s change to private-enterprise importing.

France: Winter barley harvest shows little progress this week

An estimated 79% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition in the week to June 28, unchanged from the previous week, farm office FranceAgriMer said on July 2.
The winter barley harvest showed little progress, with 2% of the crop area cut. That compared with 1% the previous week and is well behind 36% a year earlier, FranceAgrimer said in a cereal report.
