Brewery news USA, CT: Athletic Brewing Co. to invest in larger east cost brewery
Stratford’s Athletic Brewing Co. will use the capital from a recently closed $50 million funding round to make a major investment in a larger east coast brewery. The move comes less than a year after the opening of Athletic’s 150,000-barrel brewery in San Diego, the Westfair Online reported on July 9.

The new location will add brewing capacity to keep pace with surging consumer demand for Athletic’s non-alcoholic craft beers not only in the U.S. but also in a growing number of soon-to-be-launched overseas markets.

The funding round was led by long-time investors and board members Alliance Consumer Growth and TRB Advisors. Also participating were athletes, entrepreneurs, and celebrity investors Blake Mycoskie, David Chang, Lance Armstrong, Darren Rovell, Justin Tuck, and J.J. Watt.

Other supporters include Tastemaker Capital, Benevolent Capital, and Wheelhouse.

“We’re humbled that both investors who have been with us from the beginning and a host of new partners have faith in our ability to continue operating and expanding as a brewery whose commitment to our customers has never wavered,” said Athletic founder and CEO Bill Shufelt.

In addition to a new east coast brewery, Athletic will use a portion of the capital to strengthen its presence, making hires in key markets. It ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Upper Peninsula Brewing Company preparing to open in Marquette County
A new brewery in Marquette County is preparing to open, and taps will start flowing near the corner of Silver and Iron streets in Downtown Negaunee in the coming weeks, UpperMichigansSource.com reported on July 7.

Upper Peninsula Brewing Company has been in the works since 2016.

Now, after five years, the team is almost ready to serve beer.

“We’ve been working on developing out the building and just recently have gotten our brewing license finalized. We’re set to open in about a month here and we’re really excited to finally get moving and get open and serving the public,” said Upper Peninsula Brewing Company Brewer Erica Tieppo.

She said the updated building has a capacity limit of 300 customers. It features two outdoor patios, two levels of main indoor seating, and all beer will be brewed in house.

“We’ll have twelve drafts eventually – probably opening with eight, and two non-alcoholic options – a craft soda and also a hop water.”

While no beer is being brewed now, that hasn’t stopped Upper Peninsula Brewing Company staff from introducing the new brewery to the community.

Beginning July 6 and for the rest of the week, community members can stop in to tour the new location and become a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Notch Brewing making its Boston debut on July 9
A beloved North Shore brewery is making its Boston debut today, July 9. Salem’s Notch Brewing will open at 4 p.m. at the Charles River Speedway on Western Avenue in Brighton, and it will do so with bountiful kegs full of pale lager, dark lager, pale ale, and more.

Notch becomes the first tenant to open at the new development, which will eventually feature a sake bar, a South American wine bar and grocery store, an ice cream shop, a hummus-centric restaurant, an open-air courtyard, retail space, office space, and much more. The Speedway isn’t explicitly a food hall, but it’s not a food hall either, and it debuts at a time when Boston’s drinking and dining scene is emerging from the pandemic.

For its part, Notch will feature an airy, spacious taproom with 10 to 14 session beers (Notch is known for its session beers) on tap at any given time, as well as a massive year-round beer garden (2,000 square feet) with picnic tables and space for 200. Which is to say, there will be plenty of space to gather, but also plenty of space to distance, too.

Notch will also offer cans to go, and outside food is allowed. (There’ll ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: MainStage Brewing already open in Lyons
More than 30 minutes away from Rocky Mountain National Park sits the town of Lyons, which is ready to welcome back people heading up to the park through shopping, food or even a cold beer, the Denver Channel reported on July 8.

"People seem to be ready to get out, have a good time, be with their friends again, socialize over a pint," said co-founder of MainStage Brewing, Eric Kean.

For the first time, Kean is running his own business located right in the middle of Main Street.

"It's so far everything we could hope for," Kean said.

Kean grew up in Lyons, and opening a business in his hometown has always been a dream. But coming off the pandemic, getting up and running wasn’t smooth sailing.

"We're really fortunate to be opening right now and not a year ago. We feel that this is a great time to be opening a business. There's a lot of governmental support for businesses happening right now, certainly borrowing and interest rates are super low, which is helping at the same time," Kean said.

For Lyons, rebounding didn’t just begin after COVID-19; it’s been an ongoing process for years.

"The floods in 2013 are still a very recent memory for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Hi Sign Brewing relocating to bigger space
One of Austin's independent craft breweries is scooting a bit north. Hi Sign Brewing plans to relocate from their current spot near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to a warehouse space off East Seventh Street, according to a news release.

The brewery, founded in 2017, hopes their new taproom at 730 Shady Lane will be open in March. Their current digs are at 1201 Old Bastrop Highway, just across Texas 71 from the airport.

The taproom will join a long beverage history at that Shady Lane address. According to the brewery, the warehouse was built by RC Cola in the 1950s and later served as the first Shiner distribution center in Austin. It was then home to Hill Country Brewing & Bottling.

At the relocated Hi Sign, expect an outdoor patio area, live music, outdoor games and food trucks. The move will almost double the brewery's space, and they hope to beef up their barrel production capacity, according to the release. Hi Sign is known for brews like Violet the Blueberry Blonde and El Berto the Mexican Lager.

“Our original location allowed us to establish our brand and reputation for producing high-quality beers, but it'll be awesome to join the busy East Austin community, an area ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Barley-planted area estimated 28% down in 2021
Wheat planted area in Britain is forecast to expand by 26% in 2021 to 1.74 million hectares, according to a survey issued by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) on July 8.

AHDB noted that sowing conditions for wheat, which is planted in the fall, are more favorable than a year ago, when many farmers shifted to planting barley in the spring.

The survey noted that wheat planted area for 2021 is in line with the five-year average.

With this year’s shift to wheat, barley planted area is projected to decline by 28% to 769,000 hectares, AHDB said.

“With wheat prices gaining significantly over the last 12 months growers switched largely back to wheat for harvest 2021,” AHDB said. “Sowing conditions allowed this switch to happen.”

Rapeseed planted area in 2021 is forecast to decline 15% to 322,000 hectares.

“Crop conditions last year for (rapeseed) were very challenging and led to significant pest pressure and low yields,” AHDB said. “This meant growers turning away from planting this break crop.”

Barley news Ukraine & China: Chinese importers said to be looking for Ukrainian barley for August-October loading dates
Chinese importers are said to be in the market looking for Ukrainian barley production for August-October loading dates, with trade sources claiming that at least three and as many as 10 cargoes have been traded recently after prices softened and amid relatively high corn prices, Agricensus.com reported on July 9.

“Around 10 cargoes trades were made on markets. All within the recent week,” a China-based trader said, while European traders reported rumours of fewer cargoes.

“People are speaking about 500,000-600,000 tonnes. We saw 5-6 cargoes,” a second trader, based in Europe said.

Trade prices were thought to have been concluded at levels around the $284-$287/tonne CFR range, all for August loading dates, which equated to around $209-$212/tonne on an FOB basis given current freight rates of around $75/tonne.

For now, offers for barley out of the Black Sea with the required Chinese documents have been heard in the range of $217-$220/tonne FOB, with bids around $10/tonne lower.

Barley prices have also been dropping rapidly over the last week and a half, with offers to China losing around $20/tonne during the period, as the ongoing harvest brings pressure to values and more offers appear on the domestic market.

Prices had started to fall even before ...More info on site
