Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

The Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar sees net profit increase by almost 10% last year
|
Budvar, the Czech brewer that has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. company Anheuser-Busch over use of the “Budweiser” brand, increased its net profit by almost 10% last year amid record output as the pandemic saw people drink less in bars and more at home, the Associated Press reported on July 12.
Budejovicky Budvar NP, a 125-year-old state-owned brewery, said on July 12 its net profit reached 305 million koruna ($14 million) in 2020. Its output rose 3.1% to a record of 1.73 million hectolitres (45.7 million gallons) last year.
Demand for its beer in tanks and barrels declined last year as bars and restaurants were closed for a long time, but Budvar was able to meet rising demand for bottled beer.
The brewer has been expanding in recent years to be able to produce more than 2 billion hectolitres (52.8 billion gallons) of beer a year. That investment made it possible to react to changes on the markets amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Budvar sells its beer in around 80 countries and Germany, one of its key markets, grew particularly strongly in 2020. Revenues also hit a record last year, growing 0.4% to 2.81 billion koruna ($129 million).

UK: Budweiser UK to extend brewhouse in Samlesbury
|
Budweiser UK, part of the massive AB InBev group, has submitted plans to South Ribble Council to extend both its brewhouse and MCV (Mash Conversion Vessels) building in Samlesbury as part of a £45 mln investment programme first announced in March, the Lancashire Post reported on July 13.
The application follows two previous ones in the past eight months to increase the size of the brewery - which employs 500 staff - and boost beer production.
Budweiser's latest plan is to build four new tanks and two new silos at the plant in Cuerdale Lane together with the extensions.
The company, which brews Stella Artois, Corona as well as Budweiser and Bud Light at Samlesbury, is pumping a total of £117m into its two main UK factories - the other in Magor, South Wales - with the aim of producing an extra 630m pints.
The Welsh plant gets £72 mln and an extra 32 jobs, while Samlesbury's share is £45 mln, creating 32 new jobs.
The investment programme shows how the brewer has bounced back from the Covid pandemic, with record sales in the last year.
It says it wants its expansion in Lancashire and Monmouthshire to be a catalyst for economic recovery across the UK.

Australia: Asahi confirms redundancies at Carlton & United Breweries
|
Expected job losses following the merger of Asahi Beverages and Carlton & United Breweries have been confirmed, the Brews News reported on July 14.
Around 150 roles were made redundant following the merger, which has seen a number of major moves at all levels of the combined businesses.
At the end of last year, Peter Margin stepped down as chair of Asahi Holdings Australia.
Others have moved onto pastures new, such as John Phinney, who left Pirate Life when his role was made redundant following the merger and has now taken up the CEO role at Newstead Brewing in Brisbane.
Julian Sheezel, group general manager of corporate affairs at Asahi Beverages Oceania confirmed the cuts.
“With any type of major business integration there are usually job losses of around 5-10% due to duplication in roles,” Sheezel said.
“We’ve been able to keep our job losses to under 5%, with no award manufacturing job losses from the integration.
“We minimised job losses because of our new investments in growing the business, including significant capital investments in manufacturing.”
The A$16 billion deal which saw Asahi acquire Carlton & United Breweries from AB InBev was completed in June 2020.
As part of the deal the ACCC, which had previously said the acquisition

South Korea: Oriental Brewery criticized for frequent changes in beer prices
|
South Korea's largest beer-maker Oriental Brewery (OB) has come under criticism for raising and lowering factory prices of its beer products frequently over the past three years, The Korea Times reported.
Its price moves are in compliance with a commercial law revised in 2019 allowing brewers to freely set prices of their alcohol beverages.
Under the revised law, OB sought to gain price competency over its biggest rival HiteJinro that has been expanding its market share rapidly with its flagship beer Terra, according to industry sources.
But the repeated changes in its beer prices have caused confusion with wholesalers and retailers and made it harder for them to manage their stocks. They pointed out that this also caused problems for customers.
OB argued it has adjusted the prices in line with the changing environment of the beer market.
"Other companies are also adjusting their beer prices too, but it looks like we are doing it more often because we have more beer products than them," an OB official said.
For 500-milliliter bottles of Cass Fresh beer, OB has raised and reduced the price four times between April and October 2019. For Cass Light, the brewer cut the prices of 500-milliliter and 330-milliliter bottles one time in

Ukraine: Ukraine’s farmers harvest 1.04 mln tonnes of barley as of July 9
|
Ukraine’s leading grain regions have started the 2021 harvest, threshing 1.37 million tonnes of grain as of July 9, the agriculture ministry said on July 9.
The volume includes 1.04 million tonnes of barley and 325,600 tonnes of wheat, the ministry said.
The barley yield averaged 3.93 tonnes per hectare and 3.15 tonnes per hectare for wheat.
Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest about 76 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020, the ministry has said.
Analyst APK-Inform this week said that adverse weather conditions in key grain regions could lead to significant losses in Ukraine’s barley and wheat harvests.
