Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

South Africa: South African Breweries stops all production following extension of alcohol sales ban
|
South Africa’s largest beer maker, South African Breweries (SAB), has stopped all production following the extension of government's alcohol sales ban as part of lockdown regulations, News24 reported on July 16.
Government instituted the ban at the end of June as South Africa was hit by a deadly third Covid-19 wave in order to keep hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients and free of alcohol-related trauma cases. The ban was extended on 10 July.
"As SAB goes into [a sales] ban, it implements an orderly wind-down process by which the brews [that] are in progress are completed and no new brews are started," the company told Fin24.
The brewer added that it could not confirm whether this would result in shortages once the ban is lifted, but said it exacerbates the pressure the industry is under.
SAB also confirmed that its Pietermaritzburg depot was looted and "left bare", while its Denver depot in Johannesburg has had minor damage.
The Carling Black Label beer maker added that one of its distributors had also been looted resulting in vehicle damage and stock loss. The company is being assisted by police, private security companies and the South African National Defence Force, to keep its property safe.

Australia: Craft beer makers increasingly competing for shelf space
|
For a 40-something mortgage owner, fronting a craft beer section is like turning up at a large candy store with pocket money as a kid, the ABC Radio Adelaide reported on July 15.
“There's an overwhelming selection to choose from, flavours seem to be growing more and more outlandish, and I can't afford what I want.”
Welcome to Australia's craft beer industry of 2021, a high-price-point market saturated with new players, a bucket load of hops and, in recent times, a convergence of candy and beer with offerings like orange chocolate and sour berry ales.
Independent Brewers Association (IBA) chairperson Peter Philip said the Australian market was becoming "very competitive" having exploded over the past decade to more than 600 independent brewers.
"There's not the capacity of demand for another 100 beer brands, and it's very difficult to get shelf space," he said.
"I'm not saying there isn't a place for good products, but it's getting pretty tough to stand out.
"How many pale ales are out there?"
Pundits believe the number of brewers — and perhaps the percentage of attention-grabbing flavours — is set to increase further after the federal government this year increased its excise rebate for brewers and distillers.
From July 1, they are able

Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia appeals to remove breweries from negative list in National Security Council’s pandemic control
|
Carlsberg Malaysia is appealing for the removal of breweries from the negative list in the National Security Council’s pandemic control standard operating procedures (SOPs), The Star Online reported on July 16.
In a statement on July 16, it said brewing is regulated by the Malaysia Food Act 1983 and it was appealing breweries be included within the food & beverages sub-sector’s positive list under manufacturing sectors.
Carlsberg Malaysia hoped it can be allowed to operate when Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan begins.
Its managing director Stefano Clini said the company has fully complied with the government’s directive to suspend production operations since the full Movement Control Order commenced in June.
According to members of the Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Bhd (CMBB), the brewing industry contributed more than RM2 bln in direct and indirect taxes during the 2020 financial year.
Tax contributions fell by RM420 mln in 2020 compared to 2019, which is a decline of 17% and they are expected to decrease further in 2021 with prolonged lockdowns.
This does not yet account for the losses in revenue or tax contributions by around 35,000 Malaysian businesses which rely on beer as a source of income, according to CMBB estimates.
Clini said: “We fear that a

Ireland: Heineken launches its own stout to compete with Guinness
|
Heineken and Guinness are competing to be the best stout in Ireland, the Irish Post reported on July 15.
Guinness will always be the original 'Black Stuff' to most across Ireland and beyond (although many in Cork will tell you Beamish is far superior).
Guinness sell an estimated 1.5 billion pints per year in normal times, meaning Heineken are up against a monster competitor - but that hasn't stopped the company from launching their very own stout.
'Island's Edge' is the newest gift from Amsterdam-based brewery Heineken, usually known for their refreshing lager and zero-alcohol products - but their brand-new stout is proving very popular among those lucky enough to have tried it.
Promising to be smooth, creamy and "unexpectedly refreshing", Island's Edge will arrive exclusively to select Irish pubs in the coming weeks - and to give it the extra Irish push to try and compete with Guinness, Heineken's new stout is brewed with tea, which the company says reduces bitterness in the drink.
“Island’s Edge offers a modern take on stout with a refreshing taste and a progressive attitude,” said Paula Conlon, marketing manager for stout & ciders at Heineken Ireland told Just Drinks. “The unexpected addition of tea to the stout has

USA: Record heat and dire drought taking a toll on US barley crop this year
|
Record heat and dire drought are both taking a toll on the U.S. barley crop this year, a factor that could hamper a key ingredient used to brew beer, AgWeb reported on July 9.
USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says unfavorable weather in the Northern Plains and Pacific Northwest means crops are getting scorched this year. From barley to spring and durum wheat, crop condition ratings continue to tumble as dryness and heat persist.
"This has already taken a severe toll on spring sown crops that are primarily grown in the north like spring wheat and barley," says Rippey. "We're seeing our lowest crop conditions of the century, which is only two decades old, but still lowest crop conditions of the century, for spring wheat for barley across the Northern Plains."
The latest USDA Crop Progress report released on July 5 shows 22% of the U.S. barley crop is in good to excellent condition, the top two rating categories. That marks a 9 point drop in just a week. USDA says 39% of the crop is now rated poor to very poor. Washington is in the worst shape, with only 1% of the crop rated good to excellent. North Dakota's crop sits at

UK: About 68% of winter barley and 74% of spring barley crops in good to excellent condition
|
About 68% of UK’s winter barley crops are in good to excellent condition, with the strongest crops in the West Midlands and north-east of England, AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds report showed.
In contrast, Yorkshire and the Humber rated just 48% of winter barley at the highest condition levels, with 50% reported as fair. Weed, pest and disease pressure is generally low, although there are pockets of blackgrass and rhynchosporium, the AHDB said.
The majority of the spring crop was planted between March and April, with activity carrying on into May in Scotland, parts of the North West and the West Midlands.
Recent rainfall has boosted growth and almost three-quarters (74%) of spring barley crops are good to excellent. Crops in the eastern region are at 94% good to excellent, compared with just 55% of Scottish spring barley.
Disease pressure is low overall, although Yorkshire has seen the highest levels of rhynchosporium infection for many years.
Charlie Whitmarsh, crop production director for grain market specialist Frontier, urged caution in pinning too much certainty on estimates in a difficult year.
The up-and-down weather pattern could yet change things.
Crops are behind due to a cold period in late spring. Barley and wheat are about 10 days later than average,

Ukraine: Ukrainian farms harvest 2.9 mln tonnes of barley from 27.8% of total area
|
Ukrainian farms have harvested 5.5 million tonnes of grain from 8.6% of its sowing area with the yield averaging 4.16 tonne per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on July 16.
The volume includes 2.9 million tonnes of barley, harvested from 27.8% of the area with a yield of 4.29 tonne per hectare, and 2.5 million tonnes of wheat with a yield of 4.11 tonnes, the ministry said.
Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest about 76 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million in 2020, the ministry has said.
The APK-Inform consultancy this month said that adverse weather conditions in key grain regions could lead to significant losses in Ukraine's barley and wheat harvests.
