Barley news USA: Record heat and dire drought taking a toll on US barley crop this year
Record heat and dire drought are both taking a toll on the U.S. barley crop this year, a factor that could hamper a key ingredient used to brew beer, AgWeb reported on July 9.

USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says unfavorable weather in the Northern Plains and Pacific Northwest means crops are getting scorched this year. From barley to spring and durum wheat, crop condition ratings continue to tumble as dryness and heat persist.

"This has already taken a severe toll on spring sown crops that are primarily grown in the north like spring wheat and barley," says Rippey. "We're seeing our lowest crop conditions of the century, which is only two decades old, but still lowest crop conditions of the century, for spring wheat for barley across the Northern Plains."

The latest USDA Crop Progress report released on July 5 shows 22% of the U.S. barley crop is in good to excellent condition, the top two rating categories. That marks a 9 point drop in just a week. USDA says 39% of the crop is now rated poor to very poor. Washington is in the worst shape, with only 1% of the crop rated good to excellent. North Dakota's crop sits at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Connecticut craft brewers getting a tax break
The craft beer industry in Connecticut generated $3 billion in economic activity last year. Now the state is giving the growing industry a tax break, Thehour.com reported on July 14.

Gov. Ned Lamont chose to visit Thomas Hooker Brewery, located in a warehouse in Bloomfield, Wednesday, July 14 to highlight a 16.7 percent tax reduction for Connecticut brewers included in the new state budget, which went into effect July 1.

The drop from 23 cents per gallon to 19 cents puts Connecticut more in line with excise tax rates in other states such as Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Commissioner of the Department of Revenue Services Mark Boughton said.

While the change will cost the state “a little more in terms of tax revenue,” Lamont said, it will help spur further economic growth in the industry.

Thomas Hooker, which employs 50 workers, has plans to soon open a new events venue called Thomas Hooker Live in the North Armory of the former Colt firearms complex in Hartford.

Connecticut is home to more than 120 craft breweries with “dozens more in the hopper,” Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz said. The industry employs almost 18,000 people across the state.

Asked whether the tax break jives with the message from public ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: PetSkull Brewing to open its new Manitowoc location on July 23
On July 23, PetSkull Brewing in Manitowoc will be opening up for their first day at their new location, seehafernews.com reported.

The owner of the local brewery, Paul Hoffman, announced back in January that they purchased the building at 1050 Buffalo Street that formerly housed Junk Fur and Hides, and Manitowoc Scrap and Metal Company.

On top of having more space for brewing operations, this location also offered Hoffman the chance to bring Cajun food to the Clipper City.

In a post on Facebook, it was announced that they will open up at their new location on July 23rd at noon, and will be offering twenty different PetSkull original beers.

Their kitchen will not be open just yet, as they “get acclimated to our new space.”

Brewery news Canada, BC: Boardwalk Brewing now open in Port Coquitlam
A new brewery that aims to “celebrate the coming together of hard work, endless passion and the simple pleasures in life” is now open in the Fremont Village area of Port Coquitlam, the Canadian Beer News reported on July 12.

Boardwalk Brewing has been founded by Phil Saxe, and received media attention last October when two fermenting tanks were stolen from outside the brewery while it was under construction, and then found and recovered from local scrapyards several days later.

The brewery taproom opened to the public last Friday, July 9th with an opening line-up of four beers on tap, including Falling Backwards West Coast Pale Ale (5.3% abv), Superbloom Hazy Norwegian IPA (7% abv), Dance Dance Dance American Lager (5% abv), and A Weak Heart Hazy Pale Ale (5.2% abv).

A short food menu is also on offer, featuring tacos, salads, rice bowls, and various small plates.

Boardwalk Brewing is located at 2155 – 575 Seaborne Ave. in Port Coquitlam.

Brewery news USA, SD: Roundhouse Brew Pub launches in Sioux Falls
A new brewery opened on July 12 on the south side of Sioux Falls, offering a neighborhood patio west of the University of Sioux Falls stadium, the Argus Leader reported.

Just-opened Roundhouse Brew Pub on 1515 E. 69th St. sits between 69th Street and Cliff Avenue. It's the first neighborhood sports bar to open near the homes and apartments on the quiet southern edge of town.

It has 94 seats total with over a dozen outside, which were full most of the night on July 12.

“It’s a ghost town. It feels like an underserved area,” co-owner Jason Walsh said. “We wanted to be for the neighborhood. We weren’t trying to be big."

But opening night was still busy after dark.

And its Minnesota-based Roundhouse set of seven brews, from a lime-tinted beer to a pink smooth seltzer, were a hit at the grand opening. Both the patio and the indoor dining area were busy with drink and food orders at the sports brewery. Philly sandwiches and Coors were also classics on tables even after 8 p.m.

“We’ve seen unbelievable comments on the food and positive comments on the Roundhouse beer, which is new to Sioux Falls,” Walsh said. “The favorite beer is actually the pink ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Peak Drift Brewing Company expected to open in Columbia in late 2022
Peak Drift Brewing Company is the name of the huge brewery and mixed-use development underway in the former Stone Manufacturing Facility at 3452 North Main St. in Columbia. The years-long project also named Wisconsin brewer Ashley Kinart-Short, as head brewmaster, The State reported on July 13.

The $34 million brewery is expected to open in late 2022, according to co-owners and siblings Sara and Greg Middleton. Peak Drift will be the largest brewery in South Carolina, according to Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, who spoke in support of the business development at a news conference on July 13.

“I found out that only 10% of all craft beer in the United States is produced by women, and when we decided to move forward with this project, that is something very powerful that stuck out to not only me but my family and to the team we have in place,” said Sara Middleton.

Kinart-Short plans to introduce a variety of craft and traditional beer selections at Peak Drift. She said she hopes to have around 12 beer selections ready to be sold when the brewery opens next year. Kinart-Short has been a brewmaster since 2015.

Peak Drift beers will also be sold in the Smoked restaurant ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Paperback Brewing Co. celebrates its official Southern California launch
Paperback Brewing Co. is pleased to celebrate its official Southern California launch, as well as the one-year anniversary of brewery operations, Brewbound reported on July 16.

The Los Angeles-based microbrewery quietly began selling beer to-go only (in limited-edition cans and crowlers) in early July 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions on tasting room operations. Brewmaster David “Zambo” Szamborski (former head brewer of 21st Amendment) brews flagship and seasonal beers which all feature the brewery’s signature pulp fiction cover-inspired can art with names including “Bunny with a Chainsaw,” “Tucked in by Strangers,” and “Attack of the Space Cats.” Despite and in spite of pandemic-related challenges, Paperback produced nearly 2,000 BBLs in its first year and added 400+ off-premise accounts from San Diego to Los Angeles, including 188 Trader Joe’s retail locations. The brewery is on track to increase production by 50% in 2021 and is planning to increase off-premise distribution in other major California markets.

An enterprise eight years in the making, Paperback is a collaboration that evolved from a prolific home brew (or garage, to be specific) operation nicknamed “The Lab” by friends and former colleagues Brandon Monroe and Chris Cesnek. The two co-founders met fortuitously by way of an arbitrary interoffice ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Shillow Beer Company joining Ottawa’s already long list
Another exciting brewery is joining Ottawa’s already long list. Shillow Beer Company has recently opened its fixed location in the city, at 1458 Cyrville Road in Gloucester, after seven years of functioning as a contract brewery out of Toronto, Apt613 reported on July 16.

The brewery was founded by brewmaster Jamie Shillow and her husband, company president Ben Shillow, both of whom have considerable experience in the hospitality industry. Jamie gained a lot of interest and knowledge in beer from working at beer-centric bars and restaurants, which led her to try her hand at home brewing. That hobby eventually led her to enrol in the Niagara College Brewmaster Program and establish the contract brewery after graduating in 2014.

The couple chose to relocate to Ottawa due to it being much more family-friendly than downtown Toronto. They quickly fell in love with the city’s atmosphere, and saw a place for themselves within its growing beer scene.

The pandemic created many challenges for the couple, forcing delays and pivots in their plans. Jamie said that they “originally planned to have a tap room with food, but with restaurants being shut down [they] decided it made more sense to just focus on getting the production side ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NB: Corn Coast Brewing planning grand opening in Lincoln on July 31
For a group of UNL graduates and military veterans, a brewery they joked about opening long before they could drink has now taken shape and is set to open to the public on July 15, 1011now reported.

Will Walter and Dan Walkemeyer were sent to two different coasts to serve in the military.

On trips home, they referred to the midwest as an honorary coast, the corn coast.

The nickname now serves as the name of their brewery in southwest Lincoln.

“Will was living on the west coast at the time, I was living down in Pensacola, Florida,” Walkemeyer said. “We’re trying to be light, fruity, and then with a couple of traditional beers.”

Walter and Walkmeyer have known each other for over 10 years, the dream of the brewery was something they started kicking around back in 2010 but started to take shape in the past few.

“This year it’s been a real grind up until now just to kind of get everything finished,” Walter said. “The painting, the floors, getting the equipment in, setting it all up.”

Right now, they have about six different beers on tap in their space near 14th and Yankee Hill. They both say that having a military history, with Walter ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Shōjō Beer Co. launches as gypsy brewery, crafting beers via Unbranded Brewing’s facility
A new Japanese-inspired brewery from brewer and beer aficionado Haidar Hachem and his wife, local marketing guru Marilyn Orozco, is making beer inside Unbranded Brewing Co. in Hialeah, the Miami New Times reported on July 15.

The duo is the couple behind Shōjō Beer Co., named for the yokai spirit in Japanese folklore that appears as a hairy, monkey-like humanoid that is always drunk and happy.

According to Hachem, Shōjō was born from the pandemic — but to hear his story you can’t help but call it fate.

Hachem wasn’t always a craft beer fanatic. During his college days, he drank Busch or Bud Light. “Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was my first craft beer,” he says. “After that, I was hooked and wanted to try anything and everything.”

As a novice craft beer enthusiast, Hachem would frequent his local Yard House and World of Beer, trying a variety of brews. Those experiences later introduced him to South Florida’s craft beer scene. Then, in 2012, he began home brewing.

“I did mess around with a few styles, and definitely did highly hopped lagers before it was cool,” said Hachem, who is now a brewer at Lincoln's Beard in addition to launching his own brewery brand. “I ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries stops all production following extension of alcohol sales ban
South Africa’s largest beer maker, South African Breweries (SAB), has stopped all production following the extension of government's alcohol sales ban as part of lockdown regulations, News24 reported on July 16.

Government instituted the ban at the end of June as South Africa was hit by a deadly third Covid-19 wave in order to keep hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients and free of alcohol-related trauma cases. The ban was extended on 10 July.

"As SAB goes into [a sales] ban, it implements an orderly wind-down process by which the brews [that] are in progress are completed and no new brews are started," the company told Fin24.

The brewer added that it could not confirm whether this would result in shortages once the ban is lifted, but said it exacerbates the pressure the industry is under.

SAB also confirmed that its Pietermaritzburg depot was looted and "left bare", while its Denver depot in Johannesburg has had minor damage.

The Carling Black Label beer maker added that one of its distributors had also been looted resulting in vehicle damage and stock loss. The company is being assisted by police, private security companies and the South African National Defence Force, to keep its property safe.

Barley news UK: About 68% of winter barley and 74% of spring barley crops in good to excellent condition
About 68% of UK’s winter barley crops are in good to excellent condition, with the strongest crops in the West Midlands and north-east of England, AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds report showed.

In contrast, Yorkshire and the Humber rated just 48% of winter barley at the highest condition levels, with 50% reported as fair. Weed, pest and disease pressure is generally low, although there are pockets of blackgrass and rhynchosporium, the AHDB said.

The majority of the spring crop was planted between March and April, with activity carrying on into May in Scotland, parts of the North West and the West Midlands.

Recent rainfall has boosted growth and almost three-quarters (74%) of spring barley crops are good to excellent. Crops in the eastern region are at 94% good to excellent, compared with just 55% of Scottish spring barley.

Disease pressure is low overall, although Yorkshire has seen the highest levels of rhynchosporium infection for many years.

Charlie Whitmarsh, crop production director for grain market specialist Frontier, urged caution in pinning too much certainty on estimates in a difficult year.

The up-and-down weather pattern could yet change things.

Crops are behind due to a cold period in late spring. Barley and wheat are about 10 days later than average, ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Craft beer makers increasingly competing for shelf space
For a 40-something mortgage owner, fronting a craft beer section is like turning up at a large candy store with pocket money as a kid, the ABC Radio Adelaide reported on July 15.

“There's an overwhelming selection to choose from, flavours seem to be growing more and more outlandish, and I can't afford what I want.”

Welcome to Australia's craft beer industry of 2021, a high-price-point market saturated with new players, a bucket load of hops and, in recent times, a convergence of candy and beer with offerings like orange chocolate and sour berry ales.

Independent Brewers Association (IBA) chairperson Peter Philip said the Australian market was becoming "very competitive" having exploded over the past decade to more than 600 independent brewers.

"There's not the capacity of demand for another 100 beer brands, and it's very difficult to get shelf space," he said.

"I'm not saying there isn't a place for good products, but it's getting pretty tough to stand out.

"How many pale ales are out there?"

Pundits believe the number of brewers — and perhaps the percentage of attention-grabbing flavours — is set to increase further after the federal government this year increased its excise rebate for brewers and distillers.

From July 1, they are able ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia appeals to remove breweries from negative list in National Security Council’s pandemic control
Carlsberg Malaysia is appealing for the removal of breweries from the negative list in the National Security Council’s pandemic control standard operating procedures (SOPs), The Star Online reported on July 16.

In a statement on July 16, it said brewing is regulated by the Malaysia Food Act 1983 and it was appealing breweries be included within the food & beverages sub-sector’s positive list under manufacturing sectors.

Carlsberg Malaysia hoped it can be allowed to operate when Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan begins.

Its managing director Stefano Clini said the company has fully complied with the government’s directive to suspend production operations since the full Movement Control Order commenced in June.

According to members of the Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Bhd (CMBB), the brewing industry contributed more than RM2 bln in direct and indirect taxes during the 2020 financial year.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukrainian farms harvest 2.9 mln tonnes of barley from 27.8% of total area
Ukrainian farms have harvested 5.5 million tonnes of grain from 8.6% of its sowing area with the yield averaging 4.16 tonne per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on July 16.

The volume includes 2.9 million tonnes of barley, harvested from 27.8% of the area with a yield of 4.29 tonne per hectare, and 2.5 million tonnes of wheat with a yield of 4.11 tonnes, the ministry said.

Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest about 76 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million in 2020, the ministry has said.

The APK-Inform consultancy this month said that adverse weather conditions in key grain regions could lead to significant losses in Ukraine's barley and wheat harvests.

“Island’s Edge offers a modern take on stout with a refreshing taste and a progressive attitude,” said Paula Conlon, marketing manager for stout & ciders at Heineken Ireland told Just Drinks. “The unexpected addition of tea to the stout has ...More info on site
