Barley news Canada: 2020-21 barley and malt exports forecast 47% more than last year
For 2020-21, the combined exports of raw barley grain and grain equivalent of malt from Canada are revised upwards to 4.5 million tonnes (Mt), including 3.75 Mt for grain exports and 0.75 Mt for the grain equivalent of barley malt exports. This is 47% more than the volume of the last crop year, largely due to brisk grain exports and relatively stable barley product exports, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada analysts said in their July report.

The Canadian Grain Commission’s (CGC) weekly report shows barley grain exports for the August 1, 2020 – June 27, 2021 period being close to 3.7 Mt, 88% higher than the volume during the same period a year ago. The barley grain export pace is expected to slow down for the remainder of the crop year as supplies dwindle.

Barley imports for 2020-21 are expected to rise sharply from last year to 0.27 Mt, as strong demand for feed grain in western Canada, especially in Alberta, has resulted in surging barley imports.

Total domestic use is anticipated to decrease from last year, mainly due to lower feed use.

Carry-out stocks are projected to decline sharply from last crop year to 0.5 Mt, the lowest level on record. The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands prices offering of senior notes
Constellation Brands, Inc., a leading beverage alcohol company, announced on July 21 that it priced the public offering of $1.0 billion of 2.250% Senior Notes due 2031 (the “notes”) for a public offering price of 99.555% of the principal amount of the notes. The notes will be senior obligations that rank equally with all of Constellation’s other senior unsecured indebtedness.

Closing of the offering is expected to occur on July 26, 2021. Constellation intends to use the net proceeds from the offering to redeem prior to maturity its outstanding 2.700% senior notes due 2022 in the aggregate principal amount of $500.0 million and for general corporate purposes, which may include the repayment of near-term debt maturities.

BofA Securities, Inc., Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC, and J.P. Morgan Securities LLC are acting as the joint book-running managers of the offering.

Hops news USA, MI: Still a lot of room for growth for Michigan hops industry
Less than 70 hop farmers have brought Michigan forward as an emerging leader in production over the past decade but there is still a lot of room for growth, the Brownfield AG News reported on July 20.

Michigan State University extension educator Rob Sirrine tells Brownfield the difference between big farms in the Pacific Northwest and in the Midwest is pretty stark.

“The most hops Michigan has ever grown we have planted right now and we really kind of pale in comparison to what they have out west,” he says. “The last USDA survey that was in 2020 showed that there are about 670 acres of hops in Michigan.”

The nation’s leader, Washington, is home to more than 70 percent of the country’s hop production with more than 42,000 acres.

“There is an opportunity I think to market hops not just to Michigan breweries, but also small microbreweries and smaller-scale breweries that don’t have the economies of scale or the buying power to go out west and select their hops every year,” he explains.

Sirrine says now that Michigan hops vines have started age some, their profile is offering more to the brewing process.

“I think we’re just coming into that now where brewers ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Bad Tattoo Brewing opening its doors to the public on July 23
After weeks and months of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived. Bad Tattoo Brewing will open the doors of its new Kelowna location to the public on Friday, July 23 at 11 am, KelownaNow reported.

It’s located on Clement Avenue just east of Richter Street.

For those unfamiliar with Bad Tattoo, it’s a Penticton staple that attracts visitors from far and wide to enjoy their delicious beers and iconic pizza.

The brewery has a wide variety of thin crust forno pizzas and plenty of creative craft beers that will leave you coming back for more.

“Like a true bad tattoo, our brews are handcrafted and leave you with a great story to tell,” explains the Bad Tattoo website.

“Whether you’re here for a pint, growler fill or special event, we want to hear your story, we know it’s a great one.”

Bad Tattoo is just the latest brewery to open its doors in Kelowna’s exploding north end brewery district.

Welton Arms opened in early June and both Unleashed Brewing and The Office Brewery are expected to start welcoming guests over the coming days or weeks.

One thing is for sure, there’s no shortage of great options for craft beer in Kelowna these days!

Brewery news USA, KS: Defiance Brewing Company take the chance to open another location in downtown Hays
Although the owners of Defiance Brewing Company enjoy brewing and drinking beer, they are also foodies at heart. That is why when they had the chance to open another location in downtown Hays, they took it, the Hays Daily News reported on July 22.

"We get to bring all this creativity to the beer side while neglecting our foodie side," said Matt Bender. "Now we can do both."

On June 9, the downtown brewery and taproom opened on 7th Street and Fort Street. In addition to their locally-brewed beers, the new location sells thin, brick-oven pizza, chicken and all sorts of burgers.

"We want to treat the menu downtown the way we treat the beer," said Dylan Sultzer, co-owner of the brewery. "We want to change the ingredients often."

Bender and Sultzer started the original brewery in 2013 at 2050 Old Highway 40 on the southeast edge of town. Their goal was to distribute their beer across the state and even outside the state. Before COVID-19 hit, they had reached their goal. But then came the pandemic and things changed.

"Everything turned more hyper-local," Sultzer said. "The local communities are supporting their local breweries."

The two realized their success was in their location ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: 903 Brewers’ plan for a new facility approved by Sherman Planning and Zoning Committee
The Sherman Planning and Zoning Committee unanimously approved 903 Brewers’ plan for a new facility and the next step is bringing the plans before city council, KXII-TV reported on July 21.

“Right now we are broken into two buildings, our tap room and restaurant on one side and our production facility on the other side,” said 903 Brewers owner Jeremy Roberts. “At the new facility, you’ll be able to have a beer, have a burger, have a pizza and look into the production facility and see the guys brewing the beer, see them packaging the beer and see how the magic happens.”

Roberts says business at 903 is outgrowing their current facility on the 1700 block of South Elm, both figuratively and literally.

“Currently where we’re at we have 14 feet ceilings and at the new building we’re going to have 28 foot ceilings,” Roberts said. “We’ll be able to get much larger tanks there and we’ll be able to produce a lot more beer.”

Roberts has his eyes set on a plot of land at 3232 Northgate Drive in Sherman for the new site of 903 Brewers. The new 903 will feature a taproom, restaurant, warehouse, grain silos and will feature a 4000 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Tennessee Hills Brewing and Distilling officially opens new location in Johnson City
Tennessee Hills Brewing and Distilling on West Walnut Street in Johnson City is officially open to the public, WCYB reported on July 22.

This “brewstillery” comes as Johnson City gets ready to invest millions into the West Walnut Street project.

The new location is part of a multi-million dollar investment spanning three properties.

Founder Stephen Callahan hopes that the new location can start serving spirits within the next few months, but for now, the location will serve primarily beer.

Brewery news USA, KS: Limitless Brewing Company gets approval for new brewery and taproom in Lenexa
Limitless Brewing Company, a small brewery and taproom based in Lenexa, received a stamp of approval from the city to build a new location along 95th Street, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on July 21.

Limitless owners Emily and Dave Mobley are planning to move from an industrial area near 95th and Pflumm to a vacant lot in the neighboring business district at West 95th Street and Dice Lane.

After sharing overwhelmingly positive comments about the brewery, the Lenexa City Council on July 20 unanimously approved a preliminary development plan for the project. The room half emptied after the council’s vote, as brewery supporters (some wearing Limitless merchandise) left the council chambers to celebrate over glasses of beer.

“We’re really excited, absolutely, we’re excited,” said Emily Mobley outside the council chambers, where their supporters gathered to swap high fives. “We do want to be good neighbors though so, I think everything that they said we would reiterate. We don’t want to be harmful to the neighborhood that’s there. We will be respectful of our neighbors.”

The new facility will feature a larger brewing capacity than what their current location offers. Additionally, the taproom will have an outdoor patio and a couple of overhead (garage) ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Suntory CEO says Tokyo Olympics economic losses without fans will be ‘huge’
Instead of signing on as an official sponsor, Suntory chalked out another route to increase its visibility during the Games, which start this Friday, July 23: the Tokyo-based company planned to tie up with restaurants and bars around the sporting venues to promote its drinks, and open several establishments to serve its products exclusively, BollyInside reported on July 22.

“We thought of being an Olympic partner … but the economics didn’t match up,” said the chief of the Japanese beverage giant, which is home to brands such as Orangina and Jim Beam bourbon.

The recent decision by organizers to bar spectators from the Games’ Tokyo venues over public health concerns scrapped those plans.

“I thought that this occasion would be very much a showcase for us,” Niinami said in Tokyo. “I expected a lot of spectators from abroad to visit.”

“The economic losses will be enormous,” said Niinami, estimating that Japanese businesses could have enjoyed a roughly 10% hike in sales had fans been allowed.

Having no domestic spectators could cost Japan’s economy 146.8 billion yen ($1.3 billion), according to an estimate by Takahide Kiuchi, an economist at the Nomura Research Institute.

He noted in a June report that “much of the expected economic benefit ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Alcohol industry faces collapse if ban on alcohol sale isn’t lifted
After a wave of violence and destruction in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, which saw 161 liquor outlets and distribution centres looted and damaged, South Africa’s alcohol industry has called for the ban on the sale of alcohol to be lifted so that legal businesses can operate, the BusinessTech reported on July 21.

It said the restrictions need to be relaxed to avoid a possible industry-wide collapse – which threatens the livelihood of a million people supported by the sector.

South Africa moved to an adjusted level 4 lockdown at the end of June, with a complete prohibition on the sale of alcohol in place.

The alcohol industry has faced various forms of restrictions since South Africa introduced its first Covid-19 restrictions in March 2020, with the government arguing that alcohol consumption leads to increased strain on the country’s hospitals.

Estimates show that the latest four-week ban has put 9,206 jobs in the alcohol industry at risk, with a potential loss of R10.2 billion in taxes and excise duties.

This follows the three previous bans which resulted in over 7,400 jobs lost in the beer industry alone, as well as R14.2 billion in lost beer sales revenue and more than a R7.8 billion loss in taxes and ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Winter barley harvest kicks off in near perfect weather conditions
Ireland’s harvest has kicked off in near continental weather conditions, with winter barley yields generally running from 3.5t/ac to 4.25t/ac and moistures at 15-16pc, the Independent reported on July 20.

Growers report near perfect harvesting conditions and the expectation is that the bulk of the winter barley crop could be cleared up across the southern half of the country ahead of a forecast change in the weather this weekend.

A big variation in both yields and kph has been reported over the first few days of cutting. The best of the yields appear to be in the Kilkenny area, with one merchant reporting that winter barley crops were generally averaging around 4t/ac, with some coming close to 4.5t/ac. One grower in south Tipperary said crops were generally averaging 3.7t/ac, with yields in the north of the county ranging from 3.3t/ac to 3.8t/ac. In south Laois and Carlow, crops were reported to be yielding around 3.7t/ac.

Low kph over the weekend was blamed on crops not being 100pc ripe. The kph for many early crops was in the low 60s, but had climbed to the mid-60s by yesterday.

The current moisture levels of around 15-16pc will deliver up to €10/t of a bonus, given that ...More info on site

Barley news Tanzania: Serengeti Breweries’s agri-business programme boosts contract farming
Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has said it is committed to supporting the farmers' contract farming through its agri-business initiative that incorporated over 400 local farmers spread in eight regions across the country, AllAfrica reported on July 19.

The SBL Corporate Relations Director, John Wanyancha named the regions Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Manyara, Singida, Dodoma, Shinyanga, Mwanza, and Mara.

"SBL provides agricultural inputs such as free quality seeds, fertilizer, technical advice, and other farm implements to farmers through the programme," he said.

He added, SBL also links them to financial institutions to access credit facilities and in return, purchases from them cereals such as maize, sorghum and barley, which it uses for beer production.

He said the brewer's agri-business programme has turned around the lives of farmers and those of their dependents.

"In 2020 alone, SBL sourced 17,000 metric tonnes of these grains locally, equivalent to 70 per cent of SBL's annual total raw materials requirement and were looking to increase sourcing of raw materials from local farmers to 85 per cent by 2025", Wanyancha said.

SBL's ambitious project facilitates farmers growing maize, sorghum and barley in various parts of the country, enabling the company to increase the locally sourced raw materials it uses in beer production. SBL has ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Ministry of Agriculture announces duty on exports of barley, wheat for July 28 – August 3
The duty on exports of wheat from Russia from July 28 to August 3 will be $31.4 per tonne, the Ministry of Agriculture said on July 23.

The duty on exports of barley will be $38.5 per tonne, corn - $49.9 per tonne.

The export duty rate for wheat and meslin (a mixture of wheat and rye) is calculated based on an indicative price of $244.9 per tonne, for barley - at a price of $240 per tonne, for corn - $256.4 per tonne.

On April 1, 2021, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture began testing the mechanism for calculating the "floating" duty on grain exports, which entered into force on June 2, 2021. From February 5, market participants transmit data on contracts to the Moscow Exchange to calculate the indicative price. Based on this information, the Ministry of Agriculture determines the amount of the duty for a period of one week. The calculated fees are published weekly on the ministry's website.

The funds received from the duties will be returned to the Russian regions in the form of subsidies to producers of wheat, rye, corn, and feed barley. Subsidies to the regions will be distributed depending on the manufactured volume.
