Brewery news USA: Boston Beer stock tumbles on lower Q2 net income
Boston Beer stock tumbled more than 23% in Friday, July 23rd’s session as the market for hard seltzers dealt a rude surprise to the brewer, knocking off its second-quarter earnings and forcing it to lower its forecast for the ongoing financial year.

Jim Koch, chairman and founder of the company, listed several factors behind the new paradigm in the seltzer market that led to the fall in earnings. He said the market has matured. The consumption of seltzers has moved to on-premise channels and new entrants have proliferated, leading to more choices for the consumer, according to Koch.

“We increased our production of Truly to meet our summer peak and have had lower than anticipated demand for certain Truly brand styles which has resulted in higher than planned inventory levels at our breweries and increased supply chain costs and complexity,” he said.

“Our outlook for the hard seltzer category in the second half of 2021 is uncertain and we have planned our capacity and spending based upon several volume scenarios.”

Net income for the second quarter was $59.2 million, a decrease of 1.6% from the same period last year. Earnings per diluted share was $4.75, a decrease of 2.7% and lower than the $6.69 ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors to invest in £25 mln in its Burton-upon-Trent brewery upgrade
Molson Coors Beverage Company has announced a £25 mln investment in its Burton-upon-Trent brewery that includes a new hard seltzer canning line and upgrades to its beer and cider packaging facilities to drive efficiencies, the Packaging News reported on July 26.

The new canning line will package Molson Coors’ 4% ABV hard seltzer brand Three Fold, sold in three flavours Red Berries, Citrus and Tropical, in 330ml sleek can, as well as support future innovation in the ready-to-drink category and premium beers.

Work to install the new hard seltzer canning line will begin in late 2021 and the first cans are due to be produced from the new line in late spring 2022. Molson Coors will also upgrade its beer and cider packaging lines which will significantly improve efficiencies in its operations. This work will also begin later this year and is expected to be complete by early 2022.

Phil Whitehead, managing director of Molson Coors Beverage Company in Western Europe, said: “The hard seltzer and ready-to-drink (RTD) categories present a huge opportunity for growth. The RTD category is the fastest growing in alcohol globally and, while it’s early days, we’re seeing strong indications that hard seltzers will prove as popular in ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries welcome lifting of alcohol sales ban
The South African Breweries (SAB) has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement to move the country to a reduced lockdown level three and officially re-open the sale of alcoholic beverages, IOL reported on July 26.

“We believe that opening up the economy and moving the country to alert level three is an important step towards economic recovery. It is an important affirmation that livelihoods and lives are both important considerations in curbing the spread of Covid-19,” said Zoleka Lisa, vice president of corporate affairs at SAB.

She said the recent destruction of property and wide-scale looting that swept the country “submerged” the alcohol industry into further decimation and put countless more jobs at risk.

“Lifting the prohibition on alcohol sales comes as a welcome relief for our industry and the livelihoods that depend on us,” said Lisa.

She said with the headwinds facing the South African economy, it is now imperative for all South Africans to participate in ensuring a sustainable and inclusive economic growth path.

“Over 250 000 livelihoods depend on the beer value chain, alone and over one million livelihoods are supported by the alcohol industry. We look forward to reinitiating the process of job creation and responsible growth for the industry, with an ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Brewers set to hike prices due to raw materials price surge
Local breweries in Ethiopia are set to introduce price adjustments to their products due to price hikes to inputs, The Reporter said on July 24.

BGI Ethiopia, the bottler of St. George, has already adjusted its price weeks ago, attributing the change to a price surge in raw materials.

Although the communication head of BGI Ethiopia did not respond to The Reporter’s calls regarding the issue, officials from BGI’s factories speaking anonymously said that the existing market price of inputs, especially the increasing malt price, has forced the factory increase price on its products.

Currently, BGI’s crate of beer sales at 500 birr, up from the previous 440 birr and similarly, BGI is selling its draft beer for 1360 birr/barrel, also showing a significant increase from the previous 1160 birr/barrel, according to The Reporter’s findings.

“There is frequent price adjustment of commodities every time. No one is regulating this informal market distortion,” said Behailu Tekle, a bar owner whom The Reporter talked to about the price hikes. “It is just that crazy things become unprecedentedly expensive; this is frustrating.”

Habesha Breweries S.C. Communication Manager, Fitsum Kelile, told The Reporter his company is also contemplating price increases although the amount has not yet been decided.

Brewery news UK & India: Vijay Mallya declared bankrupt by London High Court
Vijay Mallya, the fugitive former head of India’s United Breweries and United Spirits, is bankrupt, The Drinks Business reported.

The 65-year-old, who lost his final court battle against extradition to India in May 2020, was formally declared bankrupt in the London High Court on July 26. The ruling has immediate effect.

Mallya is required to hand over his remaining assets, as well as his bank and credit cards to a bankruptcy trustee who will investigate his affairs and establish his true assets and liabilities, with a view to selling assets and repaying creditors. They include both United Spirits and Diageo, its parent company.

Legally he must cooperate with the trustee. All his bank accounts will be frozen, apart from money to buy essentials. He is banned from acting as a director of a company or creating a company without the court’s permission or borrowing more than £500 without declaring he is bankrupt.

Mallya is awaiting extradition from the UK to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering. He has exhausted all avenues of appeal in the UK courts but will not be sent back until a “confidential legal matter” is resolved. This is widely believed to be an application for asylum in ...More info on site

Barley news World: European wheat edges higher on ongoing concerns about dry weather impact in North America and Russia
European wheat edged higher on July 23 after two sessions of declines, supported by ongoing concerns about the impact of dry weather in North America and Russia while traders were assessing the size of the harvest in Europe.

Benchmark December milling wheat on Paris-based Euronext closed 0.8percent higher at 214.00 euros a tonne. Although it touched a two-month high at 220 euros earlier in the week, it fell 0.8percent over the whole week.

FranceAgriMer data released on July 23 showed that wet weather had hampered field work last week but a hot and dry spell since the start of the week allowed the harvest to speed up.

"There is some rain expected again this weekend in the northern part of the country, hopefully not too much, for harvesters but also for quality," a trader said.

FranceAgriMer's crop report said that 75percent of soft wheat was rated good or excellent by July 19, against 76percent a week earlier.

In Russia, the agriculture ministry said yields from the harvest of the country's wheat crop averaged 3.45 tonnes per hectare as of July 20, down from 3.47 tonnes a year earlier. In Germany more dry and sunny weather also allowed wheat and barley harvesting to gather speed.

Barley news USA: Barley crop quality weighing heavily on farmers’ minds this year
With the drought persisting, the US barley growers are anticipating a much earlier harvest season with overall crop quality weighing heavily on the minds of farmers and the beer brewing industry, the Pine Journal reported on July 26.

Like producers of all sorts of crops, the drought is weighing heavily on barley growers as their harvesting season barrels around the corner. The harvest season is being pushed ahead due to the extremely dry conditions.

“Producers are definitely concerned, and they have good reason to be,” said Austin Case, North American barley breeder for Anheuser-Busch. “We’re definitely seeing harvest being moved up a couple of weeks.”

Jim Broten, a diversified crop producer who grows barley near Dazey, N.D., is seeing the heat impact his crop first hand.

“The barley is very uneven, and I am not sure what kind of quality we will have because of the heat. I don’t know this year, with the unevenness, just what we’re gonna do. Even some people that got a few early rains have a heavier stem, but even then they’re gonna have to worry about what kind of quality they have. It’s really a mixed bag,” Broten said.
