World: Molson Coors delivers its best revenue growth in more than a decade
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co. delivered its best revenue growth in more than a decade on July 29, less than two years after ushering in a revitalization plan aimed at investing in its core brands, increasing its premium offerings and expanding beyond the beer aisle.
The Colorado and Montreal-based company posted a second quarter net income of US$388.6 million, nearly doubling its US$195 million earnings a year earlier and handily surpassing analysts' expectations.
Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley said the strong top line growth is an indicator of what's to come for the multinational drink and brewing company.
"Nearly two years ago we laid out the Molson Coors revitalization plan, a multi-year strategy to deliver the sustainable top line growth that has eluded our business for many years," he said during a conference call with analysts. "Today we can talk meaningfully about the outcomes from the revitalization plan."
The company's success comes from its diverse brand mix in the United States, significant "premiumization" of the Molson Coors portfolio and its growth beyond beer, especially with its hard seltzer segment, Hattersley said.
Above premium brand volumes reached a record-high portion of the company's U.S. portfolio compared to any prior quarter since the creation of the MillerCoors joint

South Korea: HiteJinro hopes to boost beer sales this summer with Terra, FiLite brands
|
HiteJinro hopes to boost beer sales this summer with its best-selling lager, Terra, and low-malt beer, FiLite, the Korea Times reported on July 28.
It has only been two years since the launch of Terra, but the brew has become one of the top-sellers here with its cumulative sales reaching 1.65 billion bottles as of March of this year.
Terra also holds another auspicious record.
Sales surpassed 1 million boxes just 39 days after its introduction, which is the fastest growth for a beer manufactured in Korea. Sales continued to rise to more than 1.3 million bottles sold by October 2020.
HiteJinro expects the popularity of its lager to continue this year. Unfazed by the resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the country, the brewer has targeted the niche market of people drinking at home.
HiteJinro decided to lower the price of canned Terra beer starting on July 14. Terra lager sold in 500-milliliter cans will be offered with a 15.9 percent discount.
FiLite is another popular alcoholic beverage manufactured by HiteJinro, the cumulative sales of which surpassed 1.2 billion cans as of June.
The low-malt beer comes in three different types: original FiLite, FiLite Fresh and FiLite Radler. The FiLite series was first introduced in April of

Japan: Drinks manufacturers introducing a range of low-alcohol products
|
Leading Japanese spirits and beer manufacturers are introducing a range of low-alcohol products to the market, with the aim of meeting the needs of consumers who fear drinking too much, especially after the government's new call to stay indoors triggered by increase in infections from Covid-19, the European Food Agency reported on July 30.
Last month, Asahi Breweries Ltd. nationally launched Beery, a line of beer-like beverages with 0.5% alcohol content. The line, which premiered last March in the Tokyo metropolitan area, had recorded strong sales, especially between twenty and thirty year olds. In turn, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. will introduce The Drafty, a beer-inspired, malt-based drink with 0.7% alcohol in 35 cl cans for the domestic market in September, while Mercian Corp will launch in late August “Bon Rouge”, a red wine with an alcohol content of 6% (about half of that of a normal table wine).
According to research firm Intage, domestic sales of low-alcohol beverages in 2020 grew by 70% compared to 2013, reaching a value of 419.1 billion yen. The growing importance given to the "health" factor also supports the spread of these products. In 2013, the World Health Organization cited alcohol consumption as a risk factor for those

Ireland: Spring barley harvest starts in Ireland
|
In a rare occurrence, the spring barley harvest got underway in the past few days in Ireland, with reports of crops being cut in counties Cork and Wexford, while some farmers are still finishing off the winter barley harvest in parts of the country, The Irish Farmers Journal reported on July 28.
The recent hot weather resulted in quicker ripening of crops. Planet spring barley, planted in early February, went under the knife in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork, on Saturday on Denis O’Connor’s farm. Tillage manager at Dairygold, Liam Leahy, stated that the farm is always one of the first to cut in the area as it is on light land and described the crop as good-quality malting barley.
The crop crossed the weighbridge at Dairygold Mogeely with a moisture content of 16-17%, KPH of 65, protein content of 9% and screenings of 2%.
Strong yields were reported, with the crop exceeding 3t/ac. Straw yields were also reported to be high with good demand in the area.
Leahy said that intake could prove slightly awkward this season, as winter oats, winter oilseed rape and spring barley come together on the back of the good conditions.
