Brewery news World: Molson Coors delivers its best revenue growth in more than a decade
Molson Coors Beverage Co. delivered its best revenue growth in more than a decade on July 29, less than two years after ushering in a revitalization plan aimed at investing in its core brands, increasing its premium offerings and expanding beyond the beer aisle.

The Colorado and Montreal-based company posted a second quarter net income of US$388.6 million, nearly doubling its US$195 million earnings a year earlier and handily surpassing analysts' expectations.

Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley said the strong top line growth is an indicator of what's to come for the multinational drink and brewing company.

"Nearly two years ago we laid out the Molson Coors revitalization plan, a multi-year strategy to deliver the sustainable top line growth that has eluded our business for many years," he said during a conference call with analysts. "Today we can talk meaningfully about the outcomes from the revitalization plan."

The company's success comes from its diverse brand mix in the United States, significant "premiumization" of the Molson Coors portfolio and its growth beyond beer, especially with its hard seltzer segment, Hattersley said.

Above premium brand volumes reached a record-high portion of the company's U.S. portfolio compared to any prior quarter since the creation of the MillerCoors joint ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: KITna Brewing to be dedicated to non-alcoholic beer only
Maine already has at least 150 craft breweries, but a new one, launching this summer will offer a different choice, the Maine Public reported on July 29.

"So this brewery will be dedicated to non-alcoholic beer only — so 0.5% or less," says Will Fisher, co-founder of KITna Brewing.

Fisher already makes regular craft beer at Portland's Austin Street Brewery, but he says there was clearly a gap in the market. He and KITna's co-founder, Rob Barrett, noticed that very few non-alcoholic beer options were available at all, and none of them tasted good.

"Where we got the idea for the brewery was like, we have to be able to make a great NA beer. There has to be a way to do it, and not do it in an odd way with weird ingredients and things to alter the beer," says Fisher.

The company's flagship NA beer is an American Blond Ale containing just water, hops, yeast, and grain, but the plan is to make a full complement of beer styles from pale ales to stouts, and seasonal specials. The idea is to have a delicious and practical replacement for the brews craft beer lovers want to drink.

"You have a drink on a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Husband and wife team to open Slieve Brewing Company in Reno
About 10 years ago, Philip Mountain, an avid craft beer drinker, received a Christmas present from his wife, Shannon, that got him buzzing with excitement: A “Mr. Beer” homebrewing kit, the Northern Nevada Business Weekly reported on July 29.

Like any new homebrewer, Mountain endured a trial-and-error period before he produced suds that yielded a sip-and-smile rather than a sip-and-wince.

“I’ve got to admit, that first beer was horrible,” Mountain said with a laugh.

Added Shannon: “I don’t think the beer ever made it to a glass — it was that bad.”

Mountain has come a long way. A decade later, the Mountains, longtime Las Vegas residents who moved to Reno last summer, are making plans to open a family-owned nanobrewery in Reno.

Last year, they established Slieve Brewing Company — Slieve means “A Mountain” in Irish Gaelic, their family roots — after years of racking up medals at homebrewing competitions on both sides of the Silver State.

Mountain’s accolades were punctuated within the past two years. In March 2019, his Belgian Tripel, named “Trinity Tripel,” was named “Best of Show” at the Southern Nevada Ale Fermenters Union (SNAFU) Winterfest in Las Vegas. In July 2020, he won “Best of Show” with the same suds at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: The Northland Brewing Co. becomes Northern Michigan's newest brewery
One man's passion for brewing recently culminated in the opening of Northern Michigan's newest brewery, the Petoskey News-Review reported on July 29.

The Northland Brewing Co., Indian River's first and only brewery, recently opened on Saturday, July 3 and can’t stop brewing both beer and business.

"I get so many people that come in and say '... finally! Indian River really needed a brewery' and people seem to be really loving it so far," said owner Matt Whitener.

Whitener got his start in beer production doing some home brewing for fun, but also to give out beer to his ski league friends and at a few local music festivals.

A long run with perfecting his craft even took Whitener as far as winning brewing competitions and brewing his winning beer for the Filling Station in Traverse City.

"I'd brew five-gallon kegs for my ski buddies and everyone loved it," said Whitener.

"After that contest, though, I really started thinking about going to work at a brewery and got really serious about it," he said.

Whitener ended up working for Pond Hill Farm's brewery in Harbor Springs for a bit to learn more of the ins and outs of brewing in a commercial facility ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Arlington Beer Company receives approval to open microbrewery in Arlington Heights
Arlington Beer Company received approvals from the Arlington Heights Village Board that will allow opening a microbrewery and tap room northeast of the downtown area, the Chicago Tribune reported on July 28.

Kathleen Egan, owner of the former Itasca Brewing Company, first expressed interest in opening a brewery in Arlington Heights in 2012. After overcoming a series of obstacles and proposal changes, Egan received approval from the Village Board at its July 21 meeting for land use and zoning variation requests needed to proceed with renovation of two vacant buildings near Recreation Park.

The next step is for Egan to apply for a liquor license. Meanwhile, she said her engineers and builders are standing by to begin work on the microbrewery at 19 N. Hickory Ave.

“We’re committed to promoting hand-crafted beverages and the responsible enjoyment of craft beer,” Egan told the board.

She said her brewers are trained in German beer recipes, creating unique beverages – from craft beer to cream soda and root beer.

Arlington Beer Company will be nestled in a growing residential area with one building featuring an indoor tap room with retail and an outdoor living space with a fireplace, picnic tables and televisions. The second building will be used ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Pure Project adding Vista to its locations
Opening two taprooms during a pandemic is quite the feat.

For Pure Project, the craft brewery is now adding Vista to its list of locations with a grand opening scheduled for 3 p.m. on July 30, the Coast News reported on July 28.

Dubbed Pure Project Vista, the company bought the building at 1305 Hot Spring Way, just east of the intersection of Melrose Drive and Sycamore Avenue, which will also serve as the company’s new headquarters, according to Makenna Barris, director of marketing.

Nestled along the “Hops Highway,” the 14,000-square foot building includes production lines, a 2,500-square-foot taproom, two outdoor sections and the ability for Pure Project to integrate its sustainability goals, Barris said.

For the grand opening, Pure Project Vista will have two food trucks and a specialty stout beer called Topkapi, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with pistachio, honey and Graham Crackers, Barris said.

“We’re really excited to be here and meet the neighbors,” she added. “It really is a nice neighborhood with a good vibe.”

Pure Project, which has four other locations and a fifth coming to North Park in the fall, opened its Carlsbad location in July 2020, just as a new round of restrictions were levied by the state and ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: HiteJinro hopes to boost beer sales this summer with Terra, FiLite brands
HiteJinro hopes to boost beer sales this summer with its best-selling lager, Terra, and low-malt beer, FiLite, the Korea Times reported on July 28.

It has only been two years since the launch of Terra, but the brew has become one of the top-sellers here with its cumulative sales reaching 1.65 billion bottles as of March of this year.

Terra also holds another auspicious record.

Sales surpassed 1 million boxes just 39 days after its introduction, which is the fastest growth for a beer manufactured in Korea. Sales continued to rise to more than 1.3 million bottles sold by October 2020.

HiteJinro expects the popularity of its lager to continue this year. Unfazed by the resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the country, the brewer has targeted the niche market of people drinking at home.

HiteJinro decided to lower the price of canned Terra beer starting on July 14. Terra lager sold in 500-milliliter cans will be offered with a 15.9 percent discount.

FiLite is another popular alcoholic beverage manufactured by HiteJinro, the cumulative sales of which surpassed 1.2 billion cans as of June.

The low-malt beer comes in three different types: original FiLite, FiLite Fresh and FiLite Radler. The FiLite series was first introduced in April of ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Spring barley harvest starts in Ireland
In a rare occurrence, the spring barley harvest got underway in the past few days in Ireland, with reports of crops being cut in counties Cork and Wexford, while some farmers are still finishing off the winter barley harvest in parts of the country, The Irish Farmers Journal reported on July 28.

The recent hot weather resulted in quicker ripening of crops. Planet spring barley, planted in early February, went under the knife in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork, on Saturday on Denis O’Connor’s farm. Tillage manager at Dairygold, Liam Leahy, stated that the farm is always one of the first to cut in the area as it is on light land and described the crop as good-quality malting barley.

The crop crossed the weighbridge at Dairygold Mogeely with a moisture content of 16-17%, KPH of 65, protein content of 9% and screenings of 2%.

Strong yields were reported, with the crop exceeding 3t/ac. Straw yields were also reported to be high with good demand in the area.

Leahy said that intake could prove slightly awkward this season, as winter oats, winter oilseed rape and spring barley come together on the back of the good conditions.

Brewery news Japan: Drinks manufacturers introducing a range of low-alcohol products
Leading Japanese spirits and beer manufacturers are introducing a range of low-alcohol products to the market, with the aim of meeting the needs of consumers who fear drinking too much, especially after the government's new call to stay indoors triggered by increase in infections from Covid-19, the European Food Agency reported on July 30.

Last month, Asahi Breweries Ltd. nationally launched Beery, a line of beer-like beverages with 0.5% alcohol content. The line, which premiered last March in the Tokyo metropolitan area, had recorded strong sales, especially between twenty and thirty year olds. In turn, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. will introduce The Drafty, a beer-inspired, malt-based drink with 0.7% alcohol in 35 cl cans for the domestic market in September, while Mercian Corp will launch in late August “Bon Rouge”, a red wine with an alcohol content of 6% (about half of that of a normal table wine).

According to research firm Intage, domestic sales of low-alcohol beverages in 2020 grew by 70% compared to 2013, reaching a value of 419.1 billion yen. The growing importance given to the "health" factor also supports the spread of these products. In 2013, the World Health Organization cited alcohol consumption as a risk factor for those ...More info on site
