Kenya: East African Breweries Limited reports marginal net profit drop in the year through June 2021
|
East African Breweries Limited reported a marginal net profit drop in the year ended June as higher costs offset increased sales, with the company freezing dividend payouts to preserve capital, the African Markets reported on August 2.
The firm’s net earnings in the review period stood at Sh6.96 billion compared to Sh7.02 billion a year earlier.
“In recognition of the continued uncertainty in the external environment due to Covid-19 related restrictions, the directors do not recommend a final dividend,” EABL said in a statement.
The company last paid an interim dividend of Sh3 per share for the half year ended December 2019.
Its dividend last peaked at Sh8.5 per share in the year to June 2019.
Net sales jumped 14.7 percent to Sh85.9 billion, with most of the growth coming in the second half when Covid-19 restrictions in the East African countries were less severe compared to the first half.
The company also adapted to the pandemic, finding new routes to market including distributing products to consumers’ homes.
Sales in the Kenyan market rose 11 percent, particularly in spirits while demand for beer was hurt by restrictions including closure of bars and night-time curfew which reduced drinking hours at social joints.
Uganda’s sales grew by the largest margin

UK: Diageo does not have to pay £277 mln tax bill
|
Spirits giant Diageo stated it does not have to pay a potential £277 million (US$385.2 mln) in tax liabilities, following HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)’s decision that the firm did not receive illegal state aid, The Drinks Business reported on August 2.
According to its fiscal 2021 report, Diageo escaped a nine-figure tax payout earlier this year when HMRC ruled that the business did not gain an unfair advantage through the UK’s group financing exemption tax scheme.
In 2013, the UK government introduced the group financing exemption, part of its controlled foreign company (CFC) rules. The scheme provided multinationals with tax exemptions on certain income received by offshore subsidiaries.
In April 2019, after an 18-month investigation, the European Commission ruled that the scheme was a form of state aid, giving unfair advantages to some companies.
“Anti-tax avoidance rules are important to ensure that all companies pay their fair share of tax. But they must apply equally to all taxpayers,” Margrethe Vestager, European commissioner in charge of competition policy, said at the time.
“The UK gave certain multinationals a selective advantage by granting them an unjustified exemption from UK anti-tax avoidance rules. This is illegal under EU state aid rules.”
The European Commission then ordered the UK

UK: Guinness 0.0 to be relaunched later this summer
|
Guinness has relaunched its 0.0% product, after it was withdrawn from shelves last October over concerns it may have contained mould, The Drinks Business reported on August 2.
Diageo’s UK managing director has confirmed in an interview with the Evening Standard that Guinness 0.0 will make its delayed relaunch later this summer.
The alcohol-free product, the result of four years of development, first launched in October 2020 but was pulled from shelves just weeks later after The Foods Standard Agency said the product “may contain mould.”
Diageo recalled all cans, saying at the time that there had been “a microbiological contamination which may make some cans unsafe to consume”.
After tightening its production process, Guinness 0.0 relaunched in Ireland last month and is expected to roll out across the UK by late August or early September.
“We always said that the quality of Guinness is really important. We built the brand on its quality credentials, and we made the call to take it back based on us not being happy with the quality initially. We wanted to make sure that when we relaunch it is at the quality we expect,” Dayalan Nayager, MD for Diageo, told the Evening Standard.
Diageo is currently in the process of

USA: Molson Coors to discontinue 11 economy brands in premiumization push
|
Molson Coors is cutting 11 economy brands and discontinuing 100 SKUs as the company ‘meaningfully streamlines and premiumizes’ its US portfolio, BeverageDaily.com reported on August 2.
Magnum and Mickey’s Ice are among the brands that will be cut and the company puts increased focus on its hard seltzer portfolio and other more premium drinks, as part of a wider strategy to revitalize the business.
The company decided it was time to take action on its 'long long tail of its economy portfolio in the US'.
“In recent months in the US, we paused production of a number of smaller low-margin, slow-moving economy brands and SKUs," explained CEO Gavin Hattersley in last week's earnings call.
"This allowed us to improve our brewing efficiency and stabilize inventories of our core brands, and it also premiumized our portfolio and improved our margins, and we intend to maintain that higher level of premiumization and service.
“So, after an extensive analysis of our business, we are meaningfully streamlining and premiumizing our US portfolio, discontinuing around 100 SKUs, including the elimination of 11 economy brands altogether.
"This will improve supply chain flexibility for our more profitable priority brands, enhance our innovation efforts, enable us to better focus resources

Australia: Craft beer maker Broo reports first quarterly profit since ASX listing in 2016
|
Australian craft beer maker Broo has returned its first quarterly profit since listing on the ASX in 2016, the BrewsNews reported on August 2.
After a capital raise and a deal with Carlton & United Breweries to brew its beer as it attempts to turn its fortunes around, beleaguered Broo made A$44,000 in the quarter after costs for its operating activities.
The result carries a number of asterisks however, given that they come after selling beer paid for in previous quarters, and even with the small quarterly profit, Broo is still recording extensive losses of just under A$3.0 million for the year to date.
For the three months to June 2021, Broo reportedly earned A$1.0 million from customer receipts, its highest level since the first quarter in 2019. The company said it had A$116,000 in cash at the end of the quarter.
However it appears that Broo’s marginal profits have been derived from running out stock paid for a year ago in a quarter where it appears not to have completed major expenditure on its contract brewed beer.
Last quarter the company reported it had spent A$1.1 million in product manufacturing costs, on top of A$904,000 spent in the September quarter last year during when

Rwanda: Three women making their mark on Rwanda’s beer industry
|
Three women, Josephine Uwase, Jessi Flynn and Debby Leatt, are making their mark on Rwanda’s beer industry through craft beer brewing with focus on boosting women’s economic empowerment. Theirs is a women-owned, women-led brewery, The New Times reported on August 3.
The first and women-owned modern craft brewery in Rwanda, Kweza Craft Brewery registered in Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and recently received license from Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (RFDA) to produce fresh beer - beer in its optimum state after processing cycle ends - that can be consumed at its perfect flavour since it doesn’t need to be packed in bottles before drinking.
The brewery project was started through a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 and started to mature in 2019.
Some of the beer styles are Sorghum Ale (produced with sorghum and some fruit such as mango), Ginger Beer, India Pale Ale, Stout, Belgian Honey Blonde, Gose Beer, and others.
Malt, sorghum, banana, ginger are the main raw materials used by the company to produce different styles of beer.
“The goal of a craft brewery is to provide a variety of taste options - like a restaurant offers a menu. So we will work on having different styles of beer. We will use seasonal

Canada: Barley prices increase sharply on crop concerns and lack of offers

Canada’s barley prices are reported to have increased sharply, amid mounting crop concerns and lack of offers from farmers and trade, industry analysts said at the end of July.
According to local sources, 1-1.5 mln tonnes of barley have been shipped to China, but the quality of the commodity shipped is uncertain.
US corn and Dried Distillers Grain (DDGs) are already being imported into Western Canada to help offset the declining crop situation.
Lethbridge feed barley prices are sharply up too, industry sources reported.
