Brewery news Nigeria: COVID-19, FX dampen brewery sector’s growth in Q2 2021
A look at the second quarter (Q2 2021) financial performance of Nigeria’s top brewery giants - Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc and Guinness Plc has shown that the spill -over effect of the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the impacts of structural challenges besetting the industry’s operating environment which has left investors counting and lamenting their losses, The Daily Sun reported on August 9.

Before 2014, the major talking point on the industry’s operating environment was the increased attraction of global players such as Heineken and SABMiller, due to years of strong industry profitability performance.

For instance, between 2006 and 2014, the industry’s gross and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margins averaged 47 per cent and 26.0 per cent respectively. This was made possible by the impressive performance of the broader economy, as annual real GDP growth averaged 6.4 per cent over this period, while the exchange rate (N141.35/$1), the inflation (10.1 per cent) and the unemployment rates (12.1 per cent) supported strong purchasing power of consumers.

However, this trend began to reverse in 2015 when the global crude oil price shock exposed Nigeria’s years of economic mismanagement and external vulnerability. By the end of 2019, the real GDP, the exchange ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Beer leads Mexico’s agricultural and agro-industrial exports in January-May this year
With 2,215 million dollars in the first five months of 2021, beer ranked first in Mexico’s agricultural and agro-industrial exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Development reported on August 6.

The figure represents a growth of 30.3% compared to the same period of 2020 when it totalled 1,701 million dollars.

In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture recalled that in 2020 foreign sales of beer totaled 4,685 million dollars, according to figures from the Bank of Mexico.

The main importers of Mexican beer are the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, and the United Kingdom.

In addition, the agency pointed out that Mexico ranks 31st in the world scale of producing countries of barley used for brewing beer, which is equivalent to 0.6% of global production.

The report specified that the state of Guanajuato ranked as the main barley producing state in 2020, with 32.5% of the national total, followed by Hidalgo with 25.5%, and Puebla with 12.4%, all three in the centre of the country.

Mexico is the world’s leading exporter of beer and accounts for 26.9% of the world market, followed by the Netherlands (13.3%) and Belgium (12.7%), according to the United Nations International Trade Center.

Brewery news Spain: Spanish brands account for 60% of national beer map
According to data from a study carried out by Tiendeo.com, Spanish beers dominate 60 per cent of the national beer map, reportedly followed by Dutch and German beers.

The report was based specifically on the brands of beers that Spaniards had interacted online with over the last twelve months, which revealed the trend of a passion for national beers among Spanish drinkers, along with a wide range of locally produced beers - both national and international – that respond to the new consumer demands, who are committed to local production, sustainability, and traceability.

It is clear from the findings of the report that as far as beer drinking is concerned, the Spanish reveal a certain patriotism, and remain faithful to traditional Spanish brands – even when some have been bought by foreign multinationals – which is reflected in the presence of more than 49 national brands in the study results, equivalent to 60 per cent of the market of national interest to beer drinkers.

Imported beers represented the remaining 40 per cent, with some world-famous brands appearing, such as Dutch brands, Heineken, and Amstel, which accounted for 21 per cent of the total, along with German beers on three per cent, and Mexican ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Labatt Breweries puts finishing touches on major facility expansion in Edmonton
Labatt Breweries of Canada has put the finishing touches on a major facility expansion in Edmonton that has added 30,000 square feet of warehouse space and a brand new ready-to-drink production facility, the Edmonton Journal reported on August 9.

Of the company’s recent C$119-million capital investment in Alberta, C$69.2 million has been put toward upgrading the Edmonton brewery that can now produce Labatt products that haven’t been made locally before.

“It’s really a facility that will let us make brands like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Okanagan Cider, American Vintage to name a few, and in the near future brands like NUTRL Vodka Soda as well, right here with our amazing team,” said Peter Delamont, general manager of Labatt Edmonton Brewery.

“It really positions the brewery for the future, allowing us to produce these brands that are in high demand and continuing to grow across the west and across North America.”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade and other ready-to-drink beverages are also made in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

The extra warehouse space is needed because the facility will be producing more products, which also means more jobs for the city.

“We’re really excited about that, creating new jobs and setting our brewery up for future growth to address ...More info on site
