Brewery news Mexico: Beer leads Mexico’s agricultural and agro-industrial exports in January-May this year
With 2,215 million dollars in the first five months of 2021, beer ranked first in Mexico’s agricultural and agro-industrial exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Development reported on August 6.

The figure represents a growth of 30.3% compared to the same period of 2020 when it totalled 1,701 million dollars.

In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture recalled that in 2020 foreign sales of beer totaled 4,685 million dollars, according to figures from the Bank of Mexico.

The main importers of Mexican beer are the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, and the United Kingdom.

In addition, the agency pointed out that Mexico ranks 31st in the world scale of producing countries of barley used for brewing beer, which is equivalent to 0.6% of global production.

The report specified that the state of Guanajuato ranked as the main barley producing state in 2020, with 32.5% of the national total, followed by Hidalgo with 25.5%, and Puebla with 12.4%, all three in the centre of the country.

Mexico is the world’s leading exporter of beer and accounts for 26.9% of the world market, followed by the Netherlands (13.3%) and Belgium (12.7%), according to the United Nations International Trade Center.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Labatt Breweries puts finishing touches on major facility expansion in Edmonton
Labatt Breweries of Canada has put the finishing touches on a major facility expansion in Edmonton that has added 30,000 square feet of warehouse space and a brand new ready-to-drink production facility, the Edmonton Journal reported on August 9.

Of the company’s recent C$119-million capital investment in Alberta, C$69.2 million has been put toward upgrading the Edmonton brewery that can now produce Labatt products that haven’t been made locally before.

“It’s really a facility that will let us make brands like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Okanagan Cider, American Vintage to name a few, and in the near future brands like NUTRL Vodka Soda as well, right here with our amazing team,” said Peter Delamont, general manager of Labatt Edmonton Brewery.

“It really positions the brewery for the future, allowing us to produce these brands that are in high demand and continuing to grow across the west and across North America.”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade and other ready-to-drink beverages are also made in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

The extra warehouse space is needed because the facility will be producing more products, which also means more jobs for the city.

“We’re really excited about that, creating new jobs and setting our brewery up for future growth to address ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Locality Brewing now open to public in Langley
British Columbia’s newest “field-to-glass” brewery is now open to the public in Langley, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 6.

Locality Brewing has been founded by Andrew Hamer and Melanie MacInnes, and is located on MacInnes’ 96 acre family farm, where all ingredients for the beers including hops, barley, wheat, rye, berries, and honey are grown and produced.

Head brewer Karen Cheshire – previously at Central City and Steamworks – has crafted an initial beer line-up that includes Wild Side of 248th IPA (6.5% abv), Thank You Lager (5.6% abv), English Pale Ale (4.5% abv), and Blackberry Sour Slush (5% abv).

While the brewery doesn’t currently feature indoor seating, patrons are welcome to get beer and snacks from the barn shop and take them outside to enjoy in a picnic area. Tours of the brewery, malt house, and farm property are also offered.

Locality Brewing is located at 7111 252 St. in Langley, and is currently open to visitors from 3:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, and 12:00 noon on Saturday and Sunday, closing at sunset each day.

Brewery news USA, OH: Aeonian Brewing Co. aims for everlasting mission in Alliance
If its name is any indication, Aeonian Brewing Co. will be around for quite a while, Cleveland.com reported on August 9.

Owners Brandon Benson and Dean Economous initially chose “Catalyst” as the name, but they lost it in a trademark situation to a company that doesn’t even brew craft beer. No matter; their second choice is working out well.

“My wife and I found it,” Benson said of ‘Aeonian’. “Because it is Greek, I thought ‘I don’t know if this is exactly what it means’,” he said. But he put it on the list, and eventually conferred with Economous, who is Greek. Turns out it was on his list, too.

And, he told Benson, the definition was correct.

“It means what we’re trying to achieve here,” Benson said. “The property has been here forever. … Everyone knew the Mount Union Mill (pet and garden supply). It had a lot of history anyways in Alliance, and we just wanted to continue it.”

The name also piques the customers’ interest.

“It actually ended up working better because now most people ask us how to say it,” Benson said. “It’s Aoenian Brewing Company, it’s Greek for ‘eternal and everlasting.’ What does it mean? There’s all of our ice breakers. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Noble Funk Brewery coming to Old Louisville soon
John and Dominique Shrader have been chasing this dream for the better part of a decade. The husband and wife business team is transforming a former Kroger grocery store into a massive brewery, restaurant and event space in Old Louisville. The couple is banking on beer in a land of bourbon, Spectrum News 1 reported on August 9.

“It’s funny to see how your career changes," Dominique Shrade said while touring the progress of Noble Funk Brewery's construction.

Dominique is one-half of the duo behind Noble Funk Brewery.

“I feel like all I’ve done is say 'we’re opening a brewery, we’re opening a brewery,' for like the last eight years and finally we really are opening a brewery! It’s a real thing. It’s happening."

It is happening in the former Kroger building near Breckinridge Street and South 2nd Street in Louisville. Shrader’s husband Johnathon will handle the beer-making side of Noble Funk. Previously, the couple lived in Florida before moving back home to Kentucky.

“Our dream was to always come back here and start our own venture. My husband really became passionate about beer and brewing after doing a little bit of traveling with his family. We went to Belgium and experienced all the history ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Fieldwork Brewing Company officially opens its new Napa Valley location
An ambassador for craft beer in Berkeley, California, Fieldwork Brewing Company officially opens its brand-new Napa Valley location featuring a large outdoor beer garden and expansive indoor taproom at the Oxbow Public Market Annex (1046 McKinstry Street, Napa), The Full Pint reported on August 10.

Fieldwork Brewing first opened its taproom inside the Oxbow Public Market in 2016. Steve Carlin, Founder and Managing Partner of Oxbow Public Market stated, “Barry and Alex always produce a terrific product and fun atmosphere. We expect ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: COVID-19, FX dampen brewery sector’s growth in Q2 2021
A look at the second quarter (Q2 2021) financial performance of Nigeria’s top brewery giants - Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc and Guinness Plc has shown that the spill -over effect of the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the impacts of structural challenges besetting the industry’s operating environment which has left investors counting and lamenting their losses, The Daily Sun reported on August 9.

Before 2014, the major talking point on the industry’s operating environment was the increased attraction of global players such as Heineken and SABMiller, due to years of strong industry profitability performance.

For instance, between 2006 and 2014, the industry’s gross and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margins averaged 47 per cent and 26.0 per cent respectively. This was made possible by the impressive performance of the broader economy, as annual real GDP growth averaged 6.4 per cent over this period, while the exchange rate (N141.35/$1), the inflation (10.1 per cent) and the unemployment rates (12.1 per cent) supported strong purchasing power of consumers.

However, this trend began to reverse in 2015 when the global crude oil price shock exposed Nigeria’s years of economic mismanagement and external vulnerability. By the end of 2019, the real GDP, the exchange ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Spanish brands account for 60% of national beer map
According to data from a study carried out by Tiendeo.com, Spanish beers dominate 60 per cent of the national beer map, reportedly followed by Dutch and German beers.

The report was based specifically on the brands of beers that Spaniards had interacted online with over the last twelve months, which revealed the trend of a passion for national beers among Spanish drinkers, along with a wide range of locally produced beers - both national and international – that respond to the new consumer demands, who are committed to local production, sustainability, and traceability.

It is clear from the findings of the report that as far as beer drinking is concerned, the Spanish reveal a certain patriotism, and remain faithful to traditional Spanish brands – even when some have been bought by foreign multinationals – which is reflected in the presence of more than 49 national brands in the study results, equivalent to 60 per cent of the market of national interest to beer drinkers.

Imported beers represented the remaining 40 per cent, with some world-famous brands appearing, such as Dutch brands, Heineken, and Amstel, which accounted for 21 per cent of the total, along with German beers on three per cent, and Mexican ...More info on site
