USA, NV: Huntsman Brewing on track to open in Reno’s midtown in late August
|
When Tim Turner started homebrewing, he had three benchmarks he wanted to reach, the Northern Nevada Business Weekly reported on August 12.
The first goal was to simply brew beer that was drinkable. A few cracks at a Mr. Beer kit later, he was onto something.
Then he wanted to open a craft beer bar, where he could sell his homebrewed creations, in addition to suds of local breweries. So, in 2018, Turner and three friends opened Huntsman Tavern off of Pyramid Way in Sparks.
Turner’s last objective, his ale end-game, was what inspired him to experiment with grains, hops, yeast and water to begin with.
“I started to homebrew to maybe, one day, open a brewery,” Turner said with a shrug. “That was kind of the goal.”
He’s well on his way. Turner is in the midst of leading an overhaul of the Silver Peak Brewery and Restaurant at 124 Wonder St. in Reno’s midtown. Once finished, the brewpub will launch as Huntsman Brewing, which is on track to open in late August, according to Turner.
Turner said he and a group of friends are leasing the property from Silver Peak owners David Silverman and Trent Schmidt, who closed the brewpub in 2020 after operating

Canada, MB: Black Wheat Brewing opens its doors to the public
|
Just short of a year after it was originally announced, the first modern-day brewery in Brandon, Manitoba opened its doors to the public on August 6th, The Canadian Beer News reported.
Black Wheat Brewing has been founded by Ted and Gloria Birch along with two other investors, and features beers developed by Umber Awasthi, who emigrated to Canada from India in 2016 to take the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program at Niagara College, and joined the Black Wheat team in 2020.
Black Wheat entered the market late last year with two beers – Reality Czech Pale Lager (4.8% abv) and Empire Ale American IPA (6.8% abv) – brewed under contract at Barn Hammer Brewing in Winnipeg.
Now brewing on-site and ready to welcome guests to the taproom, Black Wheat will be pouring the beers noted above along with Great Scott! Cream Ale (4.5% abv) and Blue Hills Brew (6.8% abv).
Black Wheat Brewing is located at 402 10th Street in Brandon, and will be open 7 days a week.

USA, ID: Increasing amount of beer-based taxes going to fund promotion of wine
|
Since 1988, Idaho’s excise taxes on so-called ‘strong beer’ - beer more than 4% alcohol by weight - have funneled into the same pot as taxes on wine, the Boise State Public Radio reported.
Most of that combined revenue goes into Idaho’s general fund, with portions carved out for substance abuse prevention and the state’s permanent building fund. Since 1994, a portion of those taxes helped fund the Idaho Wine Commission. As more Idaho breweries opened - many of them producing only beers above the 4% alcohol by weight (5% alcohol by volume) threshold - an increasing amount of beer-based taxes went to fund promotion of wine.
“Based on their legal statutes,” Idaho Brewers United Executive Director Sheila Francis said of the state Wine Commission, “they weren't able to promote anything but Idaho grape-based products. So, not really fair.”
IBU as it’s known (a nod to the acronym for beer’s bitterness measurement index) is the state’s brewer’s guild and lobbying group.
There are currently 83 operating breweries in Idaho. Francis said as more and more breweries opened over the last decade, nearly half the tax revenue allocated to the Wine Commission came from beer production.
“It was a significant chunk of change,” Francis said. “About

Candid will also be offering various seasonal and one-off beers under the Side Door Series banner, with the first of them – Working Joe Breakfast Stout (4.7% abv), “a light-bodied stout infused with aromatic Ethiopian coffee from Java Blend Coffee in Halifax” – available now.

Australia: Asahi implements its initiative to purchase barley direct from farmers
|
Asahi Beverages has implemented its initiative to purchase barley direct from farmers, the Food and Drink Business reported on August 11.
The scheme was announced in March, with Carlton Draught, Victoria Bitter and other iconic beers now brewed with 100 per cent Victorian barley purchased directly from local farmers.
Asahi Beverages has implemented its initiative to purchase barley direct from farmers.
Asahi Beverages restructured its barley supply chain in March and removed intermediaries such as bulk grain handlers. Following its acquisition of Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) last year, Asahi merged its alcohol businesses under the CUB name. Beers brewed with barely that has been sourced from Wimmera and Mallee farms in Victoria are now rolling off the line at the Abbotsford Brewery in Melbourne.
Head brewer Sarah Laing said any Abbotsford brewed beer directly supports farmers and sustainable practice.
“We buy 30,000 tonnes of barley each year for Abbotsford and, barring natural disasters such as a drought, our barley will only be purchased direct from Victorian farms from now on. Fresh, local and delicious, it doesn’t get much better than that,” said Laing.
To deliver this program, Asahi has partnered with supply chain managers Origin Trail and Pure Grain,

Caribbean and Central America: Managing director of Uganda Breweries appointed to head Diageo’s Caribbean and Central America region
|
Diageo has announced the appointment of Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) managing director Alvin Mbugua to head the multinational's Caribbean and Central America region, AllAfrica.com reported on August 12.
His appointment by EABL's parent company to head its largest beer business unit in Latin America and Caribbean is a promotion for Mr Mbugua, who propelled UBL to record sales despite the Covid-19 pandemic in the year to June 2021.
He will be based in Panama where he will lead 37 markets. His appointment takes effect on September 1.
Mr Mbugua was stationed at the Ugandan brewer, which is a subsidiary of EABL, for two years. Between July 2020 and June 2021, UBL reported a 33 per cent increase in net sales, the highest for EABL within the year, and more than double the 15 per cent increase in net sales reported by the Group over the period.
Performance of beer products in the Ugandan market between July 2020 and June 2021 was the highest with a 46 per cent growth in sales, and may have informed the decision to post Mr Mbugua to Diageo's largest beer market in the Caribbean.
He joined EABL as a group financial controller in May 2013, and rose to become finance
