Malaysia: Food and beverage operators asking for resuming brewery operations due to beer shortage
|
Breweries in Malaysia have remained closed for two months during phase one of the country’s national recovery plan. Now, food and beverage operators have asked the government to resume brewery operations due to a beer shortage, the Drinks Business reported on August 19.
As the pandemic spiked again in Malaysia this June, the country was back in lockdown and breweries were forced to close for over two months. The local food and beverage industry reported that the current beer inventory had bottomed out, and some had even been out of stock for a month.
In an interview by local newspaper Oriental Daily, the Malaysian Retailers Association commented that retailers have only been able to pick up limited quantities recently; meanwhile restaurants are starting to reopen and it is expected that the demand for bottled beer will increase accordingly.
Reports from vendors across Malaysia reveal that the beer inventory is close to running out, with some having been out of stock for nearly a month.
Although beer is a taboo subject within Muslim culture, it is widely welcomed by Malaysian Chinese, especially during traditional festivities such as the upcoming Yulan Festival, with some families and religious places using beer and dark beer as sacrifices for

USA, TX: AB InBev opening an Austin office to tap into region's marketing talent
|
Beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev is coming to Austin to tap into the region's marketing talent, the Austin American Statesman reported on August 20.
The St. Louis-based company has chosen Austin as one of four cities for what it calls "regional consumer hubs" for marketing efforts. The other hubs will be in St. Louis, Los Angeles and Miami.
The Austin office will open in downtown this fall, with plans to start with a team of 20 employees in the first year, Marcel Marcondes, Anheuser-Busch chief marketing officer, told the American-Statesman. The office will consist of a mix of existing employees and new hires, with the goal of growing over time, he said.
"These new hubs will give us a great advantage in two ways," Marcondes said. "First, it helps us get even closer to consumers by unlocking deeper insights into local consumer tastes and preferences. And second, the new offices have the added benefit of increasing flexibility and opportunity for our teams and allowing us to hire more local talent."
While Anheuser-Busch will maintain its central marketing site in New York, the new hubs will allow the company to better connect with customers, Marcondes said.
“The regional hubs will be home to multifunctional marketing teams in

UK: Latest reports suggest a drawback in UK’s barley planted area
|
Both the AHDB Planting and Variety Survey (PVS) released 8 July, and Defra census released on August 19, suggest a drawback in UK’s barley planted area. This is driven by spring barley, as the winter barley area has increased.
Winter barley varieties are generally higher yielding, due to the longer growing season, and therefore the drop in barley production will likely be smaller than that in planted area. Although the Defra figures only cover England, on average 72% of total barley by area is grown in England and that increases to 85% for winter barley.
While harvest reports to-date point to winter barley yields being slightly better than average, at 6.9-7.1t/ha vs a five-year average of 6.8t/ha, spring barley yields are based on a small sample of the early harvested crops. While preliminary results are good, sample sizes are still small at this stage in harvest.
Winter barley crop is thus forecast at 2.82 mln tonnes, spring barley at 4.22 mln tonnes, and the total barley production is seen at 7.04 mln tonnes. Although back from 2020 harvest by 13%, it is only 5% behind the 5-year average.
Sales of new-season barley have been strong so far. Looking at corn-returns volumes, we can see

Ukraine: Ukraine’s barley exports are likely to reach 4.4 mln tonnes in 2021/22
|
Ukraine is likely to increase its grain exports to 57 million tonnes in the 2021/22 July-June season from 45.5 million tonnes in 2020/21 thanks to a bigger harvest, analyst APK-Inform said on August 18.
The exports are likely to include 21.1 million tonnes of wheat, 4.4 million tonnes of barley and 31 million tonnes of corn, the consultancy said.
The agriculture ministry last week said that the country had exported 4.61 million tonnes of grain since the start of the 2021/22 season, up 10% from the same point a year earlier.
Ukraine's 2021 grain crop could reach 76.97 million tonnes this year, including 28.79 million tonnes of wheat, 37.76 million tonnes of corn and 8.34 million tonnes of barley, APK-Inform said.
Ukraine harvested 64.9 million tonnes of grain with 24.9 million tonnes of wheat in 2020.
