USA: Number of adults drinking alcoholic beverages declines to 60%
|
Sixty percent of U.S. adults currently report drinking alcoholic beverages such as liquor, wine or beer, marking a decrease from 65% in 2019 when the measure was last tracked, the Gallup Poll reported on August 19.
This puts current alcohol consumption on the low end of the range Gallup has recorded over the past two decades, with the percentage imbibing as high as 67% in 2010.
Since 1939 when Gallup first asked Americans about their use of alcohol, majorities ranging from 55% to 71% have reported they have occasion to drink. Alcohol drinking was at its highest point between 1976 and 1978.
Since the late 1990s, at least 60% of U.S. adults have consistently reported alcohol use, although Gallup did not measure this in 2020 when the nationwide lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic may have impacted Americans' drinking habits. Since 1984, the legal drinking age in the U.S. has been 21 years, and 61% of Americans aged 21 and older currently say they drink alcohol.
Some groups of Americans are more likely than others to report using alcohol, including men, whose 63% rate of drinking exceeds the 57% among women. Likewise, U.S. adults aged 35 to 54 are more likely to

Spain: Mahou San Miguel to invest more than EUR3 mln in its Malaga factory
|
Mahou San Miguel is to invest more than €3 million in its Malaga factory throughout 2021, the Euro Weekly News reported on August 19.
Mahou San Miguel has announced its plan to invest more than €3 million in its factory in Malaga during 2021, “to ensure its future competitiveness and its contribution to the economic development of the province”, a figure which is 18 per cent more than they spent in 2020, and is on top of the almost €28 million already invested in the facility over the last decade.
The iconic brewery has been in place for more than half a century now, on its site near the airport, and a spokesman said on August 19, that despite the difficult times brought about by the pandemic, it is prioritising investment in a centre that it considers “strategic”, and through which, purchases of goods and services worth more than €12 million were made by 127 companies in Malaga province in 2020.
This latest investment will be used fundamentally, for projects aimed at modernising processes with the latest innovations, including a comprehensive renovation of the plant’s brewhouse, and the control systems, with an investment of €1.4 million this year, which will allow the facility

South Korea: Jeju Beer makes inroads into Europe
|
Jeju Beer, named after its hometown in South Korea’s southern resort island of Jeju, has made inroads into Europe with the export of three popular craft beers, The Drinks Business reported on August 23.
Britain, Germany, France, and the Netherlands will now be home to products created by the South Korean brewer.
Founded in 2015, Jeju Beer is the island’s first local craft brewer to hit the shelves of five major South Korean convenience stores, according to Aju Business Daily.
As the Korea Craft Brewers Association reports, Jeju Beer was responsible for almost a third (28%) of the South Korean craft beer market in 2020, with an annual turnover of 21.6 billion won. The domestic craft beer market was valued at 109.6 billion won ($93.15 million) in 2020, up 37 percent from the year before.
Jeju Beer’s expansion into European territories comes as a result of a partnership with South Korean beverage production company Lotte Chilsung Beverage which allowed it to double the size of brewing and increase supply.
The company has been exporting beer to other Asian territories since 2019, including India, China, Singapore, and Thailand.
Among the beers making their way over to Europe is a wheat beer made with tangerine peel called Jeju
