The Netherlands: Beer consumption this summer 8% lower than last year
|
This past summer, beer consumption in the Netherlands was 8 percent lower than in the same period last year, though the consumption of alcohol-free beer increased by 3 percent, NU.nl reports based on figures from Nederlandse Brouwers.
Non-alcoholic beer now accounts for 7 percent of all hectolitres of beer drunk in the Netherlands, compared to just over 1.5 percent ten years ago. In the same period, the share of lager decreased from some 90 percent to just over 75 percent. The share of specialty beer like IPA or ales doubled in the past decade, from 6 to 12 percent.
According to the Nederlandse Brouwers, the increasing popularity of both non-alcoholic and specialty beer is all to do with increased supply and being increasingly accepted in society. "There is a lot of choice and it is also increasingly drunk with dinner, for example," a spokesperson said to NU.nl.
Research by the Dutch brewers showed that the percentage of Netherlands residents who sometimes drink beer decreased from 48 percent to 45 percent in the past five years. India: B9 Beverages Pvt. planning a fifth brewery before planned IPO
|
B9 Beverages Pvt., the owner of Indian craft-beer brand Bira 91, will open its fifth local brewery before the end of the year as it seeks to capture swelling demand in the country for more flavorsome tipples before a planned initial public offering, Livemint reported on August 25.
The new brewery in Madhya Pradesh - Bira’s second in the central Indian state - will initially add 400,000 hectolitres a year, Ankur Jain, the 41-year-old chief executive officer, who established the brewer in 2015, told Bloomberg News in an interview.
Known for its cartoon punk monkey mascot and backed by Sequoia Capital and Japanese beverage firm Kirin Holdings Co., B9 has tapped investors for about $50 million so far this year. Amid heated interest in India’s startup space - and their IPOs, Jain said the brewer is also preparing for its last and largest round of private fund raising set to conclude in 2021 before it pins down its listing plans.
“Consumers are looking for more flavor," he said on the robust demand trajectory. “I don’t think there will be any slowdown."

Guinness Nigeria Plc has announced plans to expand its operations and production capacity in Lagos, over the next few months, the Vanguard reported on August 25.
Following the unanimous approval of its Board and in furtherance of the strategic plan the business has been implementing over the last few years, Guinness Nigeria Plc, the country’s foremost Total Beverage Company has now completed the acquisition of 25 acres of commercial property in the Ogba industrial area of Lagos.
The Managing Director Guinness Nigeria Plc., Baker Magunda highlighted this investment in a statement reaffirming the company’s overarching strategy and expansion plans, describing it as a reflection of its belief in the Nigerian economy and ongoing commitment to the country’s development.
He said: “This bold acquisition comes with an ambitious investment plan of expanding our production capacity and operations in Nigeria. We remain steadfast in our commitment to Nigeria’s growth and development while enhancing our shareholders value in the long term. It is also part of our strategy to optimize our production assets and thereby ensure improved operational efficiency leading to greater value for our shareholders”.

Canada: 2020-21 barley exports to increase significantly due to brisk exports to China
|
For 2020-21, total barley exports are expected to increase significantly from 2019-20 to 4.55 mln tonnes, primarily due to brisk barley grain exports to China, based on Statistics Canada’s (STC) monthly export data. For the August 2020 – June 2021 period, STC reported barley grain exports at 3.48 mln tonnes and malt exports at 0.51 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its August report.
Barley imports for 2020-21 are expected to rise sharply from last year to 0.30 mln tonnes, largely due to increased feed demand in western provinces. For the August 2020 – June 2021 period, STC reported barley imports at 0.26 mln tonnes.
Total domestic use is anticipated to decrease from last year, mainly due to lower feed use.
Carry-out stocks are projected to decline sharply from last crop year to 0.5 mln tonnes, the lowest level on record. The stocks-to-use ratio is pegged at 4%, versus around 19% in normal years.
The 2020-21 average feed barley price in Lethbridge area increased to C$294/t, breaking the record level of C$279/t in 2012-13, due to the expected tight carry-out stocks, a pessimistic outlook about new crop production, and strong prices of other grains.

Ukraine: Barley exports total 2.2 mln tonnes since the start of the 2021/22 campaign
|
Ukraine has exported almost 6.5 million tonnes of grain since the start of the 2021/22 July-June season versus 6.4 million exported at the same point a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on August 26.
That included 3.1 million tonnes of wheat, 2.2 million tonnes of barley and 1.17 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine plans to thresh about 76 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.
The ministry last week said farmers had almost completed the 2021 wheat harvest, threshing 32 million tonnes from 97.6% of the sown area.
The government has said that grain exports could rise to 56 million tonnes in the 2021/22 season, including 20.7 million tonnes of wheat, 30.7 million tonnes of corn and 4.1 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine exported 44.7 million tonnes of grain in the 2020/21 season. That included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
