Barley news Canada: 2020-21 barley exports to increase significantly due to brisk exports to China
For 2020-21, total barley exports are expected to increase significantly from 2019-20 to 4.55 mln tonnes, primarily due to brisk barley grain exports to China, based on Statistics Canada’s (STC) monthly export data. For the August 2020 – June 2021 period, STC reported barley grain exports at 3.48 mln tonnes and malt exports at 0.51 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its August report.

Barley imports for 2020-21 are expected to rise sharply from last year to 0.30 mln tonnes, largely due to increased feed demand in western provinces. For the August 2020 – June 2021 period, STC reported barley imports at 0.26 mln tonnes.

Total domestic use is anticipated to decrease from last year, mainly due to lower feed use.

Carry-out stocks are projected to decline sharply from last crop year to 0.5 mln tonnes, the lowest level on record. The stocks-to-use ratio is pegged at 4%, versus around 19% in normal years.

The 2020-21 average feed barley price in Lethbridge area increased to C$294/t, breaking the record level of C$279/t in 2012-13, due to the expected tight carry-out stocks, a pessimistic outlook about new crop production, and strong prices of other grains.

For 2021-22, Canadian producers seeded nearly 3.36 million ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Back Shed Brewing opens its doors in Waite Park
Back Shed Brewing has opened its doors (the front ones) in Waite Park, MN, SC Times reported on August 25.

The new Waite Park brewery had its first official day Saturday, August 21, complete with live music and a food truck.

On tap to start were six beers (two blonde ales, an IPA, an American Porter and two sours) and two seltzers.

The patio is not complete, but the beer is.

"We figured as long as the beer is ready, we might as well let people come in and enjoy it," Jason Schlecht said. He started the brewery with his brother, Scott Schlecht.

The brewery has 16 taps on either side of the shed (built inside Back Shed Brewing and surrounded by a bar), which means their goal is to eventually get to 16 different brews on tap, Schlecht said.

Experimentation with small batches in a 15-gallon pilot system will start right away. If these brews are popular, they could be served more regularly.

As of Wednesday, August 26 the brewery's website listed these beers as available at Back Shed Brewing:

Blonde, James Blonde — blonde ale Cranky Man — cranberry/mango blonde ale Stompin' Daisies — IPA Double Cross — American Porter

Head brewer Chris Simonson said the blonde ale is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Return Brewing getting ready to open in Hudson
After eight years at Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, Mikey Lenane was ready to return to the Hudson Valley.

“I've been thinking about coming back upstate to start a brewery almost since I started at Sixpoint,” said Lenane, who worked in marketing, sales and product development at the brewery until 2020. Now, as he readies the opening of Return Brewing in Hudson, he splits his time between NYC and his parent’s home in New Baltimore while he apartment hunts in the region, the Albany Times Union reported on August 26.

“But it's only been recently that I could actually justify this as a business decision. The market for good beer has just really changed. I remember growing up, craft beer was not something that any of my friends’ dads would drink. It was like hipster or sissy beer [to them]. So it's been really crazy watching the whole region change and people accept craft beer. I'm really excited to be able to come back and do what I always wanted to.”

Two former Sixpoint colleagues, brewer JD Linderman and designer Jack Liakas, and college friend Robert Wise, who will head up finance and operations, join Lenane as co-founders of Return. Its name sounds ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Icarus Brewing planning upsizing in Lakewood
There are big plans taking shape for the future of Icarus Brewing, app.com reported on August 24.

The craft brewery, in business on Swathmore Avenue in Lakewood since 2017, is one of the power players of the New Jersey beer scene. It's planning to move just about five miles to 2045 Route 88 in Brick, the former site of Shore Restaurant Supply.

Icarus Brewing purchased the property at the end of March, owner Jason Goldstein told the Asbury Park Press. The project is on the agenda to go before township's planning board at this week's meeting, 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 25 at the Municipal Building, 401 Chambers Bridge Road.

"Brick Township has welcomed us with open arms so far," Goldstein said, "with everyone ranging from the mayor (John G. Ducey) to the residents of the town rooting for us to open and offering kind words of support."

The project is still in the early stages of the permitting process. If approved, Icarus would be upsizing from its current 4,000-square-foot facility in Lakewood to occupying just over 16,000 square feet of a 22,000-square-foot building in Brick.

Icarus' current brewing capacity is around 5,000 barrels a year, and on Route 88 they would be able to triple ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Racine Brewing Company closing for good
Last winter, Racine Brewing Company was the only brewery operating in Racine, OnMilwaukee reported on August 25.

A couple others have since opened but now Racine Brewing is closing, according to a Facebook post from owners Angie and Andy Molina.

According to the post, the brewery's last day will be Sept. 30.

"We appreciate every one of you and thank you for your support over the three and a half years," the statement reads. "We made so many new friends, some even becoming like family.

"We've loved observing how RBC took on a life of its own, transforming into a place that people loved not just to enjoy a great beer, but to meet with friends, bring their families and hold their events. We love that people feel like they are at home here."

The struggles facing small businesses, especially during Covid are the reason for the closing, according to the Molinas.

"The past year and a half has just been too much of a struggle with too many hurdles. We, as many other small businesses, never fully recovered from the catastrophic results of Covid-19. ... We adapted and changed as much as we were able to ... it just isn't enough to be sustainable and ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Beer consumption this summer 8% lower than last year
This past summer, beer consumption in the Netherlands was 8 percent lower than in the same period last year, though the consumption of alcohol-free beer increased by 3 percent, NU.nl reports based on figures from Nederlandse Brouwers.

Non-alcoholic beer now accounts for 7 percent of all hectolitres of beer drunk in the Netherlands, compared to just over 1.5 percent ten years ago. In the same period, the share of lager decreased from some 90 percent to just over 75 percent. The share of specialty beer like IPA or ales doubled in the past decade, from 6 to 12 percent.

According to the Nederlandse Brouwers, the increasing popularity of both non-alcoholic and specialty beer is all to do with increased supply and being increasingly accepted in society. "There is a lot of choice and it is also increasingly drunk with dinner, for example," a spokesperson said to NU.nl.

Research by the Dutch brewers showed that the percentage of Netherlands residents who sometimes drink beer decreased from 48 percent to 45 percent in the past five years. Fewer men drink beer, among women the percentage remained stable. Beer consumption decreased among older age groups, but increased among young people between the ages of 18 and ...More info on site

Brewery news India: B9 Beverages Pvt. planning a fifth brewery before planned IPO
B9 Beverages Pvt., the owner of Indian craft-beer brand Bira 91, will open its fifth local brewery before the end of the year as it seeks to capture swelling demand in the country for more flavorsome tipples before a planned initial public offering, Livemint reported on August 25.

The new brewery in Madhya Pradesh - Bira’s second in the central Indian state - will initially add 400,000 hectolitres a year, Ankur Jain, the 41-year-old chief executive officer, who established the brewer in 2015, told Bloomberg News in an interview.

Known for its cartoon punk monkey mascot and backed by Sequoia Capital and Japanese beverage firm Kirin Holdings Co., B9 has tapped investors for about $50 million so far this year. Amid heated interest in India’s startup space - and their IPOs, Jain said the brewer is also preparing for its last and largest round of private fund raising set to conclude in 2021 before it pins down its listing plans.

“Consumers are looking for more flavor," he said on the robust demand trajectory. “I don’t think there will be any slowdown."

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports total 2.2 mln tonnes since the start of the 2021/22 campaign
Ukraine has exported almost 6.5 million tonnes of grain since the start of the 2021/22 July-June season versus 6.4 million exported at the same point a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on August 26.

That included 3.1 million tonnes of wheat, 2.2 million tonnes of barley and 1.17 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.

Ukraine plans to thresh about 76 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.

The ministry last week said farmers had almost completed the 2021 wheat harvest, threshing 32 million tonnes from 97.6% of the sown area.

The government has said that grain exports could rise to 56 million tonnes in the 2021/22 season, including 20.7 million tonnes of wheat, 30.7 million tonnes of corn and 4.1 million tonnes of barley.

Ukraine exported 44.7 million tonnes of grain in the 2020/21 season. That included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
