Brewery news North America: Analyst forecast 3.5% recover of beer market this year
RMI Analytics’ latest forecast predicts a 3.5% recovery of North America’s beer market in 2021, which will continue but at a reduced growth rate through 2025.

The early 2021 results indicate an acceleration of the beer recovery and as re-openings expand, regional and craft brewers will benefit as well.

The beer volume recovery back to 2019 levels may actually take place in 2021 as opposed to taking two years to accomplish, the analysts said.

Brewery news USA, NC: Legion Brewing’s third location set to open this fall
Just a few weeks ago, Phil Buchy was putting the finishing touches on Legion Brewing’s third location, the Charlotte Observer reported on August 27.

With the Trolley Barn now open, Legion’s founder is doing the same over at the brewery’s new space in West Morehead. It is set to open this fall.

While this will be the brewery’s fourth location, it’s only Legion’s second actual brewery. The original brewery in Plaza Midwood produces all of the beer not only for that taproom, but also for the SouthPark and Trolley Barn locations. All of the brewery’s kegs and cans come from that location, as well.

The brewery hasn’t been able to keep up with demand in its taprooms or in the market.

“We have more than 400 accounts around Charlotte and haven’t been able to take on a single one more, just because all of the beer is evaporating,” Buchy said. “We need a new production facility just to supply restaurant demands, plus we launched cans, which dug into our volume.”

The new West Morehead brewery can meet that demand and much more. The brewhouse is currently in place, and soon Buchy and his team will be brewing test batches. New, semi-automated canning and kegging lines ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: St. Nicholas Brewing Company to open inside airport terminal
A local brewery will become the first one in the county to open inside an airport terminal, WSIL reported on August 30.

St. Nicholas Brewing Company is working on a multi-million dollar project with the Southern Illinois Airport.

The new terminal will include a brewpub patio, which will be adjacent to the runway and a view of the planes taking off.

The goal is to bring food, locally brewed beer, aviation awareness, tourism and community involvement to the Southern Illinois Airport campus.

In addition to being new for southern Illinois, St. Nicolas claims they will be the first brewery in an airport terminal in the nation.

Brewery news Mexico & USA: Grupo Modelo sues Constellation Brands over Modelo beer
The Mexican arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev has accused Constellation Brands in a lawsuit of a second breach of their deal allowing Constellation to sell Mexican beers in the United States, Reuters reported on September 1.

Grupo Modelo filed a suit in the U.S. district court of the southern district of New York on Tuesday, August 31, according to a court document, over Constellation's launch of two Modelo Reserva beers, one aged on tequila and another on bourbon barrels.

It says the first breaches U.S. and Mexican laws that strictly limit the use of the word tequila, and the second breaches Constellation's sub-licence to sell "Mexican-style beer" because bourbon has nothing to do with Mexico.

The sub-licence also does not allow this type of spirit branding, the suit says.

Constellation said Grupo Modelo's claims were without merit and that it had fully complied with the sub-licence terms.

When AB InBev took full control of Grupo Modelo in 2013, it agreed with U.S. antitrust regulators to sell Grupo Modelo's business in the United States to Constellation. The world's largest brewer retained rights to Modelo brands.

The filing says Grupo Modelo notified Constellation of the issue in June and that Constellation had refused to stop selling the product.

Brewery news USA, CO: Yampa Valley Brewing Co. lays out plans to serve the entire Yampa Valley
The goal of the Yampa Valley Brewing Co. has long been to serve the entire Yampa Valley from Craig to Steamboat Springs, and at a celebration last weekend in Hayden, the brewery laid out plans to make that happen, the Steamboat Pilot and Today reported on August 30.

“The goal has been to cater to everybody in the Yampa Valley,” co-owner Paul Brinkman said. “We understand that what people want in Craig is a little different than what people want in Hayden, and what people want in Steamboat is also a little different. Our goal is to not only brew beers that are tailored to what the community wants but also create an environment in each tasting room that is unique to the location.”

Yampa Valley Brewing Co. currently has tap houses in Craig and Hayden, with one planned to open in Steamboat in summer 2022. Yampa Valley Brewing Co. currently brews its craft beer in a rented space in Hayden and does specialty oak barrel brewing in Craig, as well.

As part of Yampa Valley Brewing Co.’s latest expansion, Brinkman said the company will build a new brew house, located just behind the Hayden tap house, at 200 Walnut St., by the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Crooked Handle Brewing Company to open second location in Piqua next summer
Crooked Handle Brewing Company, a Springboro-based brewery, announced plans to open up a second location in Piqua next summer, WHIO reported on August 29.

The brewery’s new location will be located in a 10,000 sq. ft. building owned by Piqua Granite and Marble Company at 123 N. Main St, according to a release from the City of Piqua.

The project will transform an existing 10,000 square foot building to include a brewery, warehouse style beer hall, a full kitchen, an event space, and an outdoor biergarten overlooking Piqua’s emerging Lock Nine Park, the release said.

City of Piqua Community and Economic Development Director Chris Schmiesing made the announcement saying, “Crooked Handle Brewing Company is a first-class operation that offers quality food, drinks and entertainment in a relaxing atmosphere, and we are extremely excited to welcome them to our community.”

The renovation work is expected to begin fall 2021 and be complete by late summer 2022, according to the release.

Brewery news USA, TX: Big Owl Craft Brew House to debut on September 4
A craft beer bar with an in-house brewery opens this weekend near The Heights. Big Owl Craft Brew House will debut Saturday, September 4, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on August 30.

A dream of Al and Victoria Gonzalez, Big Owl will offer 24 taps of craft beer, along with an extensive selection of bottles and cans for both on-premise and to-go. While the bar will feature local and regional selections, it will also serve as a taproom for Turkey Forrest Brewing, a local nanobrewery owned by the couple’s friends Louie Espinoza and Oscar Gonzalez.

Turkey Forrest, which describes itself as Houston’s only “all Mexican American owned nanobrewery,” produces primarily stouts and IPAs. An article in the Houston Beer Guide notes that Espinoza and Gonzalez plan to honor their heritage with beers that incorporate flavors from beverages such as aguas frescas and pulque-style beers.

“We want everyone to enjoy the Latin twist we will put on craft beer and at the same time teach a little about brewing — from the smell of the malts steeping to adding the hops in the boil to taking that first sip of our creations,” Espinoza said in a statement.

The bar’s prime location just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Myriad Brewing Company confirms address of its new location in Warrick County
A part of the Evansville brewery scene since 2018, Myriad Brewing Company is expanding into Warrick County and they've confirmed the address of their new location, wkdq.com reported.

Currently, Myriad Brewing Company has a location in Downtown Evansville at 101 Southeast First Street. The microbrewery offers twelve taps along with a selection of wines and spirits. They frequently offer events and host food trucks and have even brought in the likes of Cousin's Maine Lobster truck that you may have seen before on Shark Tank.

Myriad Brewing Company recently announced plans to open a second taproom location in Newburgh. The new location will be going up at 8245 High Pointe Drive - not far from Fiesta Aculpoco - with groundbreaking expected to begin later this year in October. They say the plan is to have the new location open by March 2022. Like their Evansville location, patrons will still be able to bring in outside food and they do plan to continue hosting food trucks and events.

So what made them decide to open a new location in Newburgh? The owners explained via a post to the Myriad Brewing Company Facebook saying,

We both grew up in Newburgh and see a brewery taproom as ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Largest beer maker Plzeňský Prazdroj announces price hike
Czech brewer Plzeňský Prazdroj will raise the price of its beers by an average of 3 percent starting in October. Prazdroj, the maker of Pilsner Urquell and other brands, is the largest brewing group in the Czech Republic and a trendsetter for the rest of the market. Its price increases in recent years have been copied by most other larger Czech breweries, expats.cz reported on September 1.

Most Plzeňský Prazdroj products will be affected, with an average of an average rise of CZK 0.46 per half litre. For the first time in three years, price changes will also affect draft beers. The information about the increases came from pubs an retail chains. Brewery spokesman Zdeněk Kovář confirmed the information for the Czech News Agency (ČTK).

The previous price rise was last October, when Pilsner Urquell increased the price of some bottled and canned beers, mainly lagers and premium beers, by an average of 3.6 percent. The price of beer in kegs and tanks remained unchanged.

Aside from its flagship Pilsner Urquell, the brewery also produces the Radegast, Gambrinus, Velkopopovický Kozel, and non-alcoholic Birell brands. The brewer struggled heavily with restrictions on pub and restaurant operations during the year-long coronavirus pandemic, due to the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Beer Association lobbying for change in beer taxation
The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) is lobbying the government to change how beer is taxed in South Africa, Business Tech reported on September 1.

In a presentation to parliament’s standing committee on finance this week, the association focused on the negative impact of above-inflation increases on the beer industry, which it says has already been devastated by the Covid-19 lockdown and four alcohol bans over the past 17 months.

BASA has specifically raised complaints around excise tax, which it says should not be applied equally to all alcoholic beverages.

“One of the main functions of excise duties is to discourage the consumption of harmful products.

“BASA has therefore argued in its submission that there needs to be a distinction between beer as an alcoholic beverage with a low alcohol-by-volume (ABV) of 2.8% to 6.0% alcohol versus other alcoholic beverages with higher ABVs.

“The beer industry has also demonstrated meaningful intent to further reduce the alcohol content in its products through the introduction of no and low alcohol beers.”

The group said it is also common practice in many other countries to regulate alcoholic beverages based on the beverage type and alcohol strength.

“For example in many OECD countries spirits are taxed higher than beer in ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Brewing business Broo reports decline in revenues despite ramping up production
Struggling listed brewing business Broo has revealed to the ASX this week that despite ramping up beer production, revenues have declined, the Australian Brews News reported on September 1.

In its preliminary full-year financial report released on August 31, receipts from customers totalled A$2.0 million, a fall from A$2.4 million the year before. Broo earned A$1.4 million from off-premise beer sales, whilst its hospitality business earned A$586,117, a fall from A$768,138 the year before.

The poor performance comes despite the ASX-listed business receiving A$281,603 in COVID relief from the government, and investing heavily in beer production throughout the year following a major contract brewing agreement with Carlton & United Breweries.

The deal saw the company take its first batch from CUB in December 2020, funded by an initial A$1.25 million capital raise.

The financial statements recorded the company as having total liabilities of A$8.17 million with assets of A$8.8 million, including A$1.75 million in stock on hand “at net realisable value”.

Brews News understands that the company has struggled to sell beer produced under its first order from CUB within its 12-month best-before date and has been heavily discounting its price, raising questions about the valuation of Broo’s inventory.

The East End Hotel, with which Broo ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Pub operator Wetherspoons says beer deliveries hit in latest supply chain disruption
UK pub company Wetherspoons said on September 1 that Carling and Coors beers are the latest casualty of the UK supply chain crunch, as some of its pubs had not received deliveries of the drinks, Yahoo Finance reported.

The chain said this was as a result of industrial action by delivery drivers on behalf of Heineken — its biggest supplier. Heineken supplies 6 of the 23 draught lines it normally offers.

"We understand that the industrial action we refer to has now been called off, which, we hope, means that the supply issues will be resolved in early course," said a Wetherspoons spokesperson.

This is a step up from last week, when the chain said it was working with alternative suppliers to replace some items on its menu, but that it was able to offer its full food and drink menu in its pubs.

Over the last weeks multiple nationwide chains have said they are running short of products due to a shortage of HGV drivers needed to deliver the products.

A dual hit of COVID-19 lockdowns and Brexit has slowed deliveries.

Last week, McDonalds also said it had a nationwide outage of milkshakes. KFC said it had run out of cheese and ...More info on site
