UK & Japan: Asahi Breweries, craft beer maker BrewDog launch joint venture in Japan
|
Maverick Scots beer maker BrewDog has launched a joint venture with a Japanese brewing giant as it looks to boost its overseas sales, The Scotsman reported on September 6.
The agreement with Asahi Breweries will see BrewDog’s core products such as Punk IPA, Hazy Jane and Elvis Juice rolled out across Japan from this month.
The joint venture – over which BrewDog will retain a controlling interest – will be known as BrewDog Japan and is the first of its type for the Ellon-based brewer.
While BrewDog beers are already available in limited locations across Japan, the joint venture is set to invest to grow brand awareness country-wide and to “increase significantly” the distribution network of bars and restaurants stocking the Scots firm’s products.
The new venture will operate as a standalone entity with its own sales, marketing and back-office teams.
BrewDog bosses said they had explored a number of “strategic options” to accelerate the expansion of its business in the fast-growing Asian markets. The creation of a joint venture with Japan’s biggest beer maker will provide a “rapid boost” to BrewDog’s distribution capability, while retaining its independence.
James Watt, co-founder and chief executive of BrewDog, which has become one of the UK’s biggest craft brewers,

India: Carlsberg India enters premium wheat beer segment
|
Brewer Carlsberg India has entered the premium wheat beer segment, with the launch of Tuborg White, Livemint reported on September 4.
Carlsberg India Private Ltd. sells brand such as Carlsberg Smooth, Carlsberg Elephant, Tuborg Green, Tuborg Strong and Tuborg Classic in the country. It largely operates in the strong beer segment in the country.
Over the last decade, the wheat beer segment has developed wide acceptance in India with a loyal base of consumers. There is an opportunity to expand this segment with the right liquid providing a consistent refreshing taste, the beer said.
The new brew has been launched across Maharashtra in 500 ml can and 330 ml glass bottles priced at Rs170 and Rs140, respectively.
This is the most premium priced offering in the Tuborg portfolio, the company said. The beer will be available in other markets soon.
India’s market for wheat beers has expanded with the entry of new brands such as Bira, Simba, White Owl as well as young drinkers that are seeking newer varieties of alcoholic beverages. Craft beers especially have helped shape consumption of wheat beer in the country. More recently India’s largest brewer launched Kingfisher Ultra Witbier, a mild wheat beer.
Carlsberg will look at expanding the category with

Ireland: Heineken aiming at 10% of Ireland’s stout market through its new Island’s Edge brand
|
Heineken Ireland is aiming to capture 10 per cent of the stout market through Island’s Edge, which will be extended to bars and pubs across the Republic this week as a high-visibility marketing campaign gets under way, The Irish Times reported on September 6.
The drinks company, which already sells Beamish and Murphy’s, has conceived Island’s Edge as a stout for people who don’t like stout – or think they don’t like stout – and is using more modern branding than would typically be associated with the category.
“It is a traditional market and that is why we decided to enter it, because we felt there is an opportunity to rejuvenate it,” said Paula Conlon, marketing manager for Island’s Edge.
The drink was soft-launched in 300 Dublin venues in July and has been available in supermarkets and off-licences since last month.
“The sales performance has been quite strong in the first eight weeks,” said Ms Conlon, who is “confident” that the brand can reach at least a 10 per cent share of Irish stout sales by recruiting new customers to the category.
Heineken Ireland marked the official launch in a style that has not been seen in Dublin for some time: an in-person event, with

New Zealand: Government urged to refund excise on beer that spoiled during lockdowns
|
New Zealand’s Taxpayers’ Union is backing calls for the Government to refund excise tax on keg beer that has spoiled due to COVID-19 lockdowns, Scoop.co.nz reported on September 8.
Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “Many kegs opened prior to lockdown will have deteriorated to such an extent that thousands of litres will, tragically, need to be poured down the drain. The Government shouldn’t be exacerbating this sad loss with a nasty excise tax.”
“Excise tax is a consumption tax, so it seems perverse and unfair to levy it on product that cannot be consumed.”
“The loss of revenue from lockdown alone is a major blow for brewers and pubs. Charging excise tax on destroyed product is an egregious double whammy. The Government should allow beer excise to be remitted for the beer that is returned and destroyed.”

USA: Colorado’s once-promising hop industry now in dire straits
|
Driving down U.S. 550 between Montrose and Ridgway in southwest Colorado, the hop bines are visible from the road. This time of year, during harvest season, they stretch 18 feet tall, climbing the trellises that farmers Chris DellaBianca and Audrey Gehlhausen hang by hand each spring, the Aspen Times reported on September 5.
Walking through rows upon rows of lush bines, hanging heavy with Cascade, Columbus and Chrystal hop cones, one can see how they blow gracefully in the wind like lanky green dancers doing pirouettes. It’s a romantic scene, DellaBianca admits, a twinge of disillusionment in voice.
Nine varieties of hops grow on the couple’s Billy Goat Hop Farm, which at 32 acres is among the largest hop-erations in the state. The irony? Drinkers will rarely find their crop in local beers.
When farmers began sowing the seeds of Colorado’s hop industry more than a decade ago, it was to meet the demands of a “drink local” culture, perpetuated in no small part by MillerCoors, which in 2010 released a beer made exclusively with ingredients from the Centennial State. But the once-promising industry is now in dire straits as small growers try to manage competition from large agriculture, shifting consumer tastes, increasingly

Japan: Diageo invests in Japan’s Komasa Kanosuke Distillery
|
Japanese whisky maker Komasa Kanosuke Distillery has announced investment by Diageo through Distill Ventures, the Market Screener reported on September 8.
Kanosuke Distillery was founded by Komasa Jyozo Co., Ltd in 2017. A corporate split in August 2021 separated the distillery and all whisky assets into the Komasa Kanosuke Distillery Co., Ltd, and Diageo have taken a minority interest in this new company. The distillery benefits from the 138 years of tradition of the parent company in distilling shochu from rice and sweet potatoes. It pioneered the barrel-ageing of shochus, with its Mellow Kozuru brand receiving numerous awards in Japan and internationally.
The distillery was built on land acquired by Kanosuke Komasa, the second President of Komasa Jyozo Co., Ltd. Yoshitsugu Komasa, the fourth president, developed the whisky project and built the distillery, with distillation commencing in 2017. It houses three pot stills with variations in neck shapes and lyne arms, allowing for the creation of different flavours in the distillation process. The custom-designed bottle mirrors the shape of the principal spirit still.
All production at Kanosuke Distillery is of single malt whisky using non-peated and peated malted barley imported from the UK. Maturation includes the use of barrels previously used to age
