Brewery news USA, RI: The Guild Warren opens its doors to public
For months, folks walking along the path by the Palmer River in Warren have speculated when and what would open in what seemed like a vacant industrial building next to the Tourister Mill Apartments. Last week, they got their answer, WPRI.com reported.

The Guild Warren opened its doors on Wednesday, September 1, on Water Street. It’s the third spot for The Guild, which has operated its successful brewery in Pawtucket since 2017. This is the second summer they’ve also operated a beer garden in Providence, in which co-founder Jeremy Duffy says, tens of thousands of people have enjoyed this year alone.

When asked why he chose Warren for their third spot, Duffy answered without hesitation. “We’ve just been always enamored with Warren. The food scene here is amazing and Water Street is one of the best food streets in Rhode Island, and us to be added to that community, and the backdrop is pretty good too,” Duffy laughed, referencing the many outdoor tables on The Guild Warren’s deck, overlooking the Palmer River and Barrington across the way. He said they also own the land up to the water in front of the building, so he has plans for Adirondack chairs ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Cerebral Brewing announces plans for second location in Aurora
Cerebral Brewing has announced plans to double down on the longest commercial street in America with the upcoming opening of its second location just down the road at 9990 E Colfax Ave in Aurora, CO, porchdrinking.com reported on September 3.

Across the six years of its existence, Cerebral Brewing has established itself as an absolute force within the Colorado craft beer scene focusing initially on Hazy IPAs and eventually also becoming one of the region’s elite Barrel-Aged Stout, Porter producers, while also introducing inventive sours, wilds, and Lagers to their lineup.

While the new 17,699 square foot facility will eventually become home to a second taproom for Cerebral, that element of the project won’t likely happen until closer to the end of 2022. Instead, the new Aurora location will focus first on increasing production capabilities. Co-founder Sean Buchan noted that their original location was only intended to produce between 2400 to 2500 barrels a year, however last year the Cerebral team cranked out 2,200 barrels and is now on track to increase production to 2,700 bbls this year without adding any additional tanks.

“It’s more than we should realistically be making in that spot in terms of efficiency and labor,” said Buchan. “We ...More info on site

Hops news USA: Colorado’s once-promising hop industry now in dire straits
Driving down U.S. 550 between Montrose and Ridgway in southwest Colorado, the hop bines are visible from the road. This time of year, during harvest season, they stretch 18 feet tall, climbing the trellises that farmers Chris DellaBianca and Audrey Gehlhausen hang by hand each spring, the Aspen Times reported on September 5.

Walking through rows upon rows of lush bines, hanging heavy with Cascade, Columbus and Chrystal hop cones, one can see how they blow gracefully in the wind like lanky green dancers doing pirouettes. It’s a romantic scene, DellaBianca admits, a twinge of disillusionment in voice.

Nine varieties of hops grow on the couple’s Billy Goat Hop Farm, which at 32 acres is among the largest hop-erations in the state. The irony? Drinkers will rarely find their crop in local beers.

When farmers began sowing the seeds of Colorado’s hop industry more than a decade ago, it was to meet the demands of a “drink local” culture, perpetuated in no small part by MillerCoors, which in 2010 released a beer made exclusively with ingredients from the Centennial State. But the once-promising industry is now in dire straits as small growers try to manage competition from large agriculture, shifting consumer tastes, increasingly ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Geneseo’s newest brewery, Strange Design Public House, eyeing October grand opening
The couple behind Amber Lantern Brewing, the GLOW region’s first craft brewery, is eyeing an October grand opening for their new brewery in Geneseo, the Strange Design Public House, The Daily News Online reported on September 5.

Located in the three-story, brick building at 4570 Millennium Drive, Tommy and Kristi Streamer said their new craft brewery will mark an about face from the space’s past life as a men’s dormitory in the Livingston County Poorhouse complex.

“I want people to feel like we’re welcoming them into our home,” said Kristi Streamer, speaking inside her and her husband’s new brewery last month. “I want it to be relaxing and while I hope to be very, very busy, I don’t want it to be frantic… That’s our big thing - we want everyone to feel welcome, whether you love craft beer or not.”

The building has been lovingly restored by building owner Greg O’Connell’s work crew. O’Connell is a the New York City real estate developer best known locally for his efforts to revitalize Mount Morris’s downtown district by buying and restoring neglected properties and then renting them out at affordable rates.

Exposed brick is much in evidence throughout the brewery and the Streamers said O’Connell ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Third brewery gets permit to be built in Sperryville
After two failed votes, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors on September 1 approved a special exception permit for a third brewery to be built in Sperryville under the condition that the business owner reapply for the permit in three years, the Rappahannock News reported.

The deal was reached after Jackson Supervisor Ron Frazier and Piedmont Supervisor Christine Smith expressed concern about traffic and flooding in the area, and but the board ultimately decided the safety concerns would be reassessed if the owners seek reapplication.

The brewery is planned to be located at 11961 Lee Highway in Sperryville where Veditz and Co. Brewing LLC will restore an existing building on the property. When finished, it will contain a 600 square-foot tasting room, two public restrooms, an outdoor biergarten and a parking lot for up to 17 vehicles.

The brewery will operate Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the entire year.

“The concept for the brewery was very inventive,” Smith told the Rapp News. “At the same time, in light of the continuing concerns about traffic and safety, and in particular that intersection where the brewery is located, I would be doing everybody a grave ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Bevi Bene Brewing Co. set to open in winter 2022
The former head brewer of Asheville’s Wedge Brewing Co. and his wife will open a new brewery specializing in lagers and hard kombucha at the 60,000-square-foot Lumberyard development, located just off King Street Extension at 1834-1859 Summerville Ave. Set to open in winter 2022, Bevi Bene Brewing Co. will offer around eight different rotating brews and three-to-four hard kombuchas, owners Clay and Marissa Carlisle told the City Paper.

“Both head brewers that I worked with were really good at making lagers, so that’s going to be our main focus at Bevi Bene,” said Clay, adding that former Wedge employee Ian Leightner will join the couple as head brewer.

After pandemic-caused delays, construction started in August. The brewery will feature an outdoor patio, ample parking and space for food trucks, which will be on-site weekly.

The Lumberyard, which is being developed by RCB Development and designed by Charleston architect David Thompson, continues to slowly add tenants, including event venue The Arbor Room and Lowcountry Local First’s Local Works coworking space. Bevi Bene will occupy 5,670 square feet at the new development.

“This was always kind of a dream of ours,” said Marissa, who will run the front-of-house. “It seems like the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Racine Brewing Company shutting down later this month
The owners of Racine Brewing Company are shutting down later this month. A pandemic-driven loss in revenue is to blame. But the owners are advocating for other small businesses before their doors close for good, FOX 6 Milwaukee reported on September 6.

Behind the bar of their Main Street taproom, Andy and Angie Molina beam with pride.

"We always talked about opening the brewery," Andy said.

The pair each switched careers to chase a lifelong dream – opening the Racine Brewing Company in March 2018.

"I remember being so nervous worrying that people weren't gonna like our beer," Angie said.

Beyond beer, the Molinas brewed a sense of community. It is why they started the business in the first place – to bring people together. Unfortunately, that is the same reason the Molinas are closing down.

"We couldn't even fill that many seats. It was a huge struggle," Andy said.

Crowds that once filled the taproom are not as consistent amid the pandemic. It is why the pair took to Facebook on Saturday with the following message.

They hope to inspire customers to support the locally-owned businesses the same way they did before the pandemic.

"Know that your local business owners love you. They love being a part ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & Japan: Asahi Breweries, craft beer maker BrewDog launch joint venture in Japan
Maverick Scots beer maker BrewDog has launched a joint venture with a Japanese brewing giant as it looks to boost its overseas sales, The Scotsman reported on September 6.

The agreement with Asahi Breweries will see BrewDog’s core products such as Punk IPA, Hazy Jane and Elvis Juice rolled out across Japan from this month.

The joint venture – over which BrewDog will retain a controlling interest – will be known as BrewDog Japan and is the first of its type for the Ellon-based brewer.

While BrewDog beers are already available in limited locations across Japan, the joint venture is set to invest to grow brand awareness country-wide and to “increase significantly” the distribution network of bars and restaurants stocking the Scots firm’s products.

The new venture will operate as a standalone entity with its own sales, marketing and back-office teams.

BrewDog bosses said they had explored a number of “strategic options” to accelerate the expansion of its business in the fast-growing Asian markets. The creation of a joint venture with Japan’s biggest beer maker will provide a “rapid boost” to BrewDog’s distribution capability, while retaining its independence.

James Watt, co-founder and chief executive of BrewDog, which has become one of the UK’s biggest craft brewers, ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Carlsberg India enters premium wheat beer segment
Brewer Carlsberg India has entered the premium wheat beer segment, with the launch of Tuborg White, Livemint reported on September 4.

Carlsberg India Private Ltd. sells brand such as Carlsberg Smooth, Carlsberg Elephant, Tuborg Green, Tuborg Strong and Tuborg Classic in the country. It largely operates in the strong beer segment in the country.

Over the last decade, the wheat beer segment has developed wide acceptance in India with a loyal base of consumers. There is an opportunity to expand this segment with the right liquid providing a consistent refreshing taste, the beer said.

The new brew has been launched across Maharashtra in 500 ml can and 330 ml glass bottles priced at Rs170 and Rs140, respectively.

This is the most premium priced offering in the Tuborg portfolio, the company said. The beer will be available in other markets soon.

India’s market for wheat beers has expanded with the entry of new brands such as Bira, Simba, White Owl as well as young drinkers that are seeking newer varieties of alcoholic beverages. Craft beers especially have helped shape consumption of wheat beer in the country. More recently India’s largest brewer launched Kingfisher Ultra Witbier, a mild wheat beer.

Carlsberg will look at expanding the category with ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Heineken aiming at 10% of Ireland’s stout market through its new Island’s Edge brand
Heineken Ireland is aiming to capture 10 per cent of the stout market through Island’s Edge, which will be extended to bars and pubs across the Republic this week as a high-visibility marketing campaign gets under way, The Irish Times reported on September 6.

The drinks company, which already sells Beamish and Murphy’s, has conceived Island’s Edge as a stout for people who don’t like stout – or think they don’t like stout – and is using more modern branding than would typically be associated with the category.

“It is a traditional market and that is why we decided to enter it, because we felt there is an opportunity to rejuvenate it,” said Paula Conlon, marketing manager for Island’s Edge.

The drink was soft-launched in 300 Dublin venues in July and has been available in supermarkets and off-licences since last month.

“The sales performance has been quite strong in the first eight weeks,” said Ms Conlon, who is “confident” that the brand can reach at least a 10 per cent share of Irish stout sales by recruiting new customers to the category.

Heineken Ireland marked the official launch in a style that has not been seen in Dublin for some time: an in-person event, with ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Government urged to refund excise on beer that spoiled during lockdowns
New Zealand’s Taxpayers’ Union is backing calls for the Government to refund excise tax on keg beer that has spoiled due to COVID-19 lockdowns, Scoop.co.nz reported on September 8.

Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “Many kegs opened prior to lockdown will have deteriorated to such an extent that thousands of litres will, tragically, need to be poured down the drain. The Government shouldn’t be exacerbating this sad loss with a nasty excise tax.”

“Excise tax is a consumption tax, so it seems perverse and unfair to levy it on product that cannot be consumed.”

“The loss of revenue from lockdown alone is a major blow for brewers and pubs. Charging excise tax on destroyed product is an egregious double whammy. The Government should allow beer excise to be remitted for the beer that is returned and destroyed.”

Whisky news Japan: Diageo invests in Japan’s Komasa Kanosuke Distillery
Japanese whisky maker Komasa Kanosuke Distillery has announced investment by Diageo through Distill Ventures, the Market Screener reported on September 8.

Kanosuke Distillery was founded by Komasa Jyozo Co., Ltd in 2017. A corporate split in August 2021 separated the distillery and all whisky assets into the Komasa Kanosuke Distillery Co., Ltd, and Diageo have taken a minority interest in this new company. The distillery benefits from the 138 years of tradition of the parent company in distilling shochu from rice and sweet potatoes. It pioneered the barrel-ageing of shochus, with its Mellow Kozuru brand receiving numerous awards in Japan and internationally.

The distillery was built on land acquired by Kanosuke Komasa, the second President of Komasa Jyozo Co., Ltd. Yoshitsugu Komasa, the fourth president, developed the whisky project and built the distillery, with distillation commencing in 2017. It houses three pot stills with variations in neck shapes and lyne arms, allowing for the creation of different flavours in the distillation process. The custom-designed bottle mirrors the shape of the principal spirit still.

All production at Kanosuke Distillery is of single malt whisky using non-peated and peated malted barley imported from the UK. Maturation includes the use of barrels previously used to age ...More info on site
