Brewery news Australia: Beverage giant Lion acquires craft beer maker Fermentum
The founders of Stone and Wood brewer Fermentum have rejected suggestions the Australian craft beer market is becoming increasingly consolidated following the purchase of the brewer by beverage behemoth Lion, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on September 9.

On Thursday, September 9, Lion announced it had bought the Byron Bay-founded brewer, which was started in 2008 by Jamie Cook, Brad Rogers and Ross Jurisich and has since grown to claim 1 per cent of Australia’s A$4 billion beer market.

It marks the latest in a long line of major craft beer acquisitions over the past decade, with prominent brands such as Little Creatures, Mountain Goat, 4 Pines and Balter all snapped up by the likes of Lion and Asahi.

However, Mr Jurisich told The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald Australia’s craft beer scene was still thriving, and the country had more independent brewers today than in previous years.

“Craft is a difficult term to nail, but...we’ve actually got a lot more [independent brands]. There are nearly 600 breweries in Australia,” he said. “There’s more and more out there.”

The Stone and Wood brewer’s acquisition may come as a surprise to some industry watchers, given the business’ apparent past opposition to corporate ownership.

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer pulls earnings guidance amid slowdown in sales of its hard seltzer Truly
Boston Beer, the parent of alcoholic beverage brands like Samuel Adams and Angry Orchard, pulled its earnings guidance on September 8 amid a big slowdown in sales of its hard seltzer brand Truly, CNBC reported.

At the end of July, the company pointed to “decelerating growth trends” in hard seltzer sales to justify its weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings and revenue for the second quarter, which sent its stock tumbling 26% at the time. Those results also led the company to cut its full-year forecast, lowering its expected adjusted earnings to between $18 per share and $22 per share for 2021. Its prior outlook was for a profit between $22 per share and $26 per share.

Shares of the alcoholic beverage company fell 9.8% in after-hours trading.

“The Company now expects to incur hard seltzer-related inventory write-offs, shortfall fees payable to third-party brewers and other costs that will be expensed during the remainder of fiscal 2021,” Boston Beer said.

The market for hard seltzer products has been among the most sought after by legacy beverage brands during the pandemic. In August, Constellation Brands and Anheuser-Busch InBev launched hard seltzer products under the Bud Light and Corona brands.

In a related move in the same month, Boston Beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi to re-release its Asahi Draft Beer as a new flagship product
Asahi Breweries Ltd. will re-release its popular Asahi Draft Beer as the company's new flagship product from Sept. 14, the major Japanese brewery announced on Sept. 8.

“We decided to revive it (Asahi Draft Beer) because we believe it can provide a sense of comfort that Super Dry cannot offer,” Kazuo Matsuyama, who heads Asahi’s marketing division, said in an online news conference that day.

Asahi said it is aiming to have Asahi Draft Beer become its second showcase product following the mega-hit Super Dry beer by taking advantage of the popularity of drinking alcohol at home amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a reduction in liquor tax last year.

The brewery first launched Asahi Draft Beer in 1986, but discontinued the production of its canned versions in 1993 to free up capacity to boost the production of Super Dry, which became a major hit after going on sale in 1987.

Asahi has continued selling Asahi Draft Beer to bars and restaurants, where the product has enjoyed enduring popularity, according to the brewery.

The revived canned Asahi Draft Beer will have new packaging, but still taste rich and smooth as the original ones did, the company said.

While Asahi sold about 65 million cases of Super Dry ...More info on site

Barley news France: Barley, soft wheat shipments record this August
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union rose to their highest in three years, Refinitiv data showed, as exports to Algeria ramped up following a slow start in July.

Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the 27-country bloc totalled 834,600 tonnes in August, the second month of the 2021/22 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.

Algeria was the largest non-EU destination for French soft wheat last month, with an initial estimate of 335,900 tonnes, followed by Ivory Coast with 122,100 tonnes.

Total barley exports outside the EU reached 909,900 tonnes last month, the highest for August in at least a decade.

That was dominated by 712,980 tonnes of feed barley and 104,200 tonnes of malting barley shipped to China. Another 88,520 tonnes of feed barley was sent to Mexico and 4,200 tonnes of malting barley was shipped to Sweden.

Two ships expecting to carry 60,000 tonnes of barley to Mexico and 30,000 tonnes of soft wheat to Ivory Coast were cancelled in mid-August.

Soft wheat exports to China are expected to ramp up in the coming month as two ships totalling an expected 136,300 tonnes are waiting to load.

Barley news Belarus: Belarusian commodity exchange starts trading in malting barley
Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange has started trading in malting barley, BUCE spokesman Roman Yaniv told BelTA.

"During two trading sessions on 7 and 9 September, one of the largest domestic malt producers purchased 950 tonnes of malting barley. Sellers were Russian companies. A total of 75 suppliers participated in the last trading session. We expect that this will mark the launch of the regular exchange trade in malting barley, which is in demand in the brewing industry," Roman Yaniv said.

“Despite the continuous increase in the domestic raw material base and the emergence of new domestic varieties, Belarusian producers still have to buy significant volumes of malting barley abroad,” Roman Yaniv said. “Moreover, the competitiveness of the finished product - malt - directly depends on the quality and cost of raw materials. BUCE provides access to leading suppliers of barley from near and far abroad The high level of competition during trading makes it possible to conclude transactions on the most favorable terms. Naturally, the launch of trades in the new product was preceded by serious preparatory work. But the very first trading session clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of the exchange mechanism," he stressed.
