Malaysia: Major brewers expected to record stronger sales volumes in Q4
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (CBM) and Heineken Malaysia Bhd (HMB) is expected to record stronger malt liquor market (MLM) sales volume from the fourth quarter (Q4) 2021 onwards, the New Straits Times reported on September 10.
CGS-CIMB Research, in a note on September 10, said the positive sales outlook is backed by a gradual reopening of economic activities and higher vaccination rates, as well as higher on-trade sales with consumers allowed to dine in.
Further, the government's green to hold mass gathering events such as weddings and events will be the key drivers for beer sales.
Both CBM and HMB have resumed their brewery operations since 16 August after an 11-week suspension to comply with the full movement control order (FMCO).
This is in line with government initiatives to allow manufacturers with fully vaccinated employees to operate.
"We gather that more than 80 per cent of both brewers' employees have been fully vaccinated, which means the brewers are allowed to operate at full capacity in Phases 1 and 2 of the current Movement Control Order (MCO)," the research firm said.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic began in March 2020, both CBM and HMB have focused on increasing operating efficiencies.
This is via various efforts, including digitalisation and streamlining

China: Brewery-backed online platform on a mission to grow craft category in China
|
A brewery-backed online platform providing information, ratings and reviews on craft beer in China is on a mission to grow the category, which currently accounts for just 1.5% of brews sold in the country.
Established by Shen Kai in 2015, Jiuhuar is said to be China’s first beer application to promote and develop the craft beer culture in the country, and now has more than half a million users.
It provides information on more than 9,000 bars in China, over 23,000 craft beer on its database, more than 200,000 reviews, and includes a discussion zone on the platform for consumers.
Shen told FoodNavigator-Asia that craft beer consumption in China only began about a decade ago, even though around 80% of Chinese consumers drink beer.
In 2020, craft beer sales reached RMB12 billion (US$1.8 bln), which is only 1.5% of total beer sales in China. Despite this, Shen anticipates China’s craft beer market will follow the trajectory seen in the US over the next five to 10 years.
The US craft beer market, began in the 1960s but became more popular in the 1990s with the rise of microbreweries.
In 2020, craft beers account for about 28% of US’s total beer sales, which is about RMB120 billion

USA: AB InBev releasing its first non-alcoholic beer under the Stella Artois brand
|
AB InBev is releasing its first zero-proof beer under the Stella Artois brand. Called Liberté, the nonalcoholic libation is now available in select markets including New York, Washington D.C., Miami and Philadelphia, the Food Dive reported on September 10.
The 0.0% option will come in the brand’s classic 11.2-ounce glass bottles, but with updated labeling. In its press release, the brand said this is a non-alcoholic version of its classic blonde pilsner.
Non-alcoholic beer has become a focus for AB InBev over the last few years as the company seeks to turn around its slipping beer sales. The beer maker has zero-proof beers under many of its lines, including Budweiser, Busch, Goose Island, Four Peaks Brewing, Breckenridge Brewery and Golden Road Brewing brands.
This latest release under the Stella Artois brand shows that AB InBev has found success in using non-alcoholic brews to innovate beyond its legacy products.
Choosing Stella Artois as the next brand for a non-alcoholic makeover makes sense, as AB InBev has worked to position Stella Artois as a premium offering. Premiumization has driven market growth in the beverage space during the pandemic as consumers have increased their at-home drinking. Stella Artois is also a beer with positive sales growth in

South Africa: Move to adjusted level 2 lockdown permits alcohol sales for on-site consumption for seven days a week
|
Alcohol industry groups have welcomed South Africa’s move to an adjusted level 2 lockdown but have raised concerns about the damage another ban could do to the sector, BusinessTech reported on September 12.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on September 12, that alcohol sales for on-site consumption will be permitted seven days a week up to 22h00, and the sale of alcohol from retail outlets for off-site consumption will be permitted from Monday to Friday between 10h00 and 18h00.
“The further easing of restrictions will provide some reprieve to those businesses that have survived the four alcohol bans, which forced the industry to shut down for 161 days since March last year, putting just over 240,000 jobs at risk,” said the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA).
“However, with a Covid-19 fourth wave expected to hit at the beginning of December, any recovery seen in the sector will be eradicated should another ban be enforced by the government over the festive season.”
With this period also being the busiest time for liquor outlets and establishments, another alcohol ban will no doubt be the final nail in the coffin for thousands of businesses and the jobs they support, BASA said.
“BASA, therefore, continues to call for a

World: Substantial weather damage on northern hemisphere crops this year
|
Weather damage on crops in the northern hemisphere has been substantial this summer, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their September report.
Particularly durum, milling wheat and malting barley have been affected by late planting, a cold spring, heat waves in summer, and rains and storms in many regions before and at harvest time.
Hardest hit were Canada, the northern plains of the U.S., the eastern countries of the EU and Central Russia.
In the southern half of the world crops look very good in Argentina and Australia, while Brazil is about to collect a poor safrinha maize crop.

USA: Kirin Brewery launches Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji in the US
|
Kirin Brewery Co. splashed into the U.S. whiskey market this month, launching a high-end, single-grain spirit aimed at a niche crowd in its debut, The Japan News reported on September 11.
Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji, which uses only unblended whiskey made at a distillery at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture, was launched in the U.S. at prices about $95 per 700 milliliter bottle.
The company plans to gradually increase exports to the United States, a promising market that accounts for about 35% of the world’s high-priced whiskey consumption, eyeing competition with Japanese rivals such as Suntory Spirits Ltd.
Japanese whiskey accounts for only 3% of the U.S. high-end whiskey market. Suntory already exports the Hibiki and Toki brand products, while the Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., which is an affiliate of Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., sells Taketsuru and other brand items in the United States.
