Brussels: Brussels Beer Project on track to start brewing at new facility in December
|
Brussels Beer Project says it is on track to start operations in its new brewery in December 2021, with the delivery of the last fermentation tanks to the new site bringing it one step closer to the goal, The Brussels Times reported on September 14.
The new brewery is a turning point for the company and the tanks will allow the brewery to produce all its beers in Brussels. Currently, BBP has a small brewery in Rue Dansaert, while two-thirds of its production takes place at a partner brewery in Limburg.
Upon opening, the new brewery will have an annual capacity of 3.5 million litres, with the potential to increase to 5 million in time.
“This last tank going in is a big moment, but we still have a few more things to do. It’s a good moment to celebrate,” Co-founder Sébastien Morvan told the Brussels Times. “The plan is to start brewing from the 8 December and then take it from there. Our lease is 40 years, and then who knows what happens.”
The tanks were delivered by boat and lifted in by crane into the brewery in the “Port Sud” district of Biestebroeck in Anderlecht, an area that BBP co-founder Olivier de

UK: Heineken ditches low-calorie beer Amstel 66
|
Heineken has ditched its low-calorie Amstel 66 after less than two years on the UK market, The Grocer reported on September 16.
Amstel owner Heineken launched the 3% abv beer, which drew its name from the fact one bottle contained 66 calories, in March 2020.
However the brand, whose sole retail listing was in Sainsbury’s, has now been removed from shelves.
Confirming the move, a Heineken spokesman said: “We constantly review our portfolio of ciders and beers to ensure that we are providing both our customers and our consumers with the best possible range of products.
“As a result of this latest review, we have taken the decision to remove Amstel 66 from our range.”
The brand performed modestly after its launch but failed to gain significant headway in the mults: its retail value stood at £1.5m over the year ending 15 May 2021, on volumes of 645,686 litres [Nielsen].
The core Amstel brand, however, saw a sales surge during the pandemic, adding a colossal £14.5m to its value – a rise of 28.9%, on volumes up 27.9% [Nielsen].
In the on-trade, meanwhile, Amstel, along with Birra Moretti, faced shortages earlier this year when Covid restrictions were eased.
At the time, a Heineken spokeswoman said demand for the

Ukraine: Farms planning to sow 1.02 mln ha of winter barley this year
|
Ukrainian farms had sown 356,040 hectares of winter grains for the 2022 harvest as of Sept 13 or 5% of the expected area of 7.84 million hectares, the agriculture ministry said on September 14.
The area will include 6.68 million hectares of winter wheat, 1.02 million hectares of winter barley and some area of rye, it said.
Farmers had sown 331,170 hectares of winter wheat and 10,100 hectares of winter barley, the ministry said in a statement.
It also said Ukraine would sow 1.03 million hectares of winter rapeseed and the sowing was 75% complete.
Last year, the autumn drought reduced the area planted with winter grains, and farmers sowed 6.1 million hectares of winter wheat, 954,700 hectares of winter barley and 125,200 hectares of rye for the 2021 harvest.
One of the major grain growers and exporters globally, Ukraine plans to harvest a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021.
