Brewery news USA, WA: Old Stove Brewing launching its new location on Friday, September 17
Old Stove Brewing will open a new location in the North Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle, along the Lake Washington Ship Canal, the Washington Beer Blog reported on September 14.

The new facility will span a block, from Nickerson Street to Ewing Street, and feature a 30-barrel brewery at its core, surrounded by a taproom and beer garden. Beer will be brewed on a system that has some local history — it’s Fremont Brewing’s original 30-barrel brewhouse.

In all, the Old Stove Ship Canal facility will span 24,000-square-feet, provide a live music venue, and create jobs for 60 employees, with room to grow beyond that. Old Stove anticipates opening the new location in 2022. Once the production brewery is operational, Old Stove expects to increase its production and retail sales in Seattle.

“The initial concept for Old Stove was centered on bringing people together and building community,” said Chris Moore, co-founder of Old Stove Brewing. “With this expansion, we’re excited to introduce a welcoming space in the city for locals and visitors to come together around craft beer in addition to Old Stove’s existing taproom at Pike Place Market.”

As far as Old Stove Brewing’s ambitious endeavor is concerned, Chris Moore, a co-founder ...More info on site

Its 10 beers are specifically brewed to complement its smokey barbecue, whether it is sour beers like the Miami Weisse, IPAs like the Moondance and lagers like the Horse With No Name. It recently won silver awards in both the U.S. Open Beer Championship and the Great American Beer Festival, and its barbecue menu includes offerings such as brisket, chicken, baby back ribs, pulled pork, sausage, tacos and more.

The brewpub will be located at 101 Frederica Street and features a spacious patio for outdoor dining with an outdoor fireplace overlooking the river, a private rental space, an R&D brewery system and a fully stocked bar. Brewery news USA, WI: Torzala Brewing to take over Component Brewing’s old space
Component Brewing’s old Lincoln Warehouse brewery space, something of a tiny incubator, will get yet another brewery, OnMilwaukee.com reported on September 16.

Jeff and Trish Torzala will open Torzala Brewing in the spot on the second floor of the building, 2018 S. 1st St., on the western edge of Bay View. He is purchasing the brew system that Component is leaving behind.

Torzala is an alum of the Barley to Barrel brewing program and studied at Chicago’s Siebel Institute. He also worked at Spike Brewing in Riverwest, which manufactures brewing systems.

“(There’s) not a lot to tell just yet as plans are still in the works,” says Torzala. “I can tell you Torzala Brewing will be taking over that space and there will be beer!

“I’m more of a traditional style brewer," he adds. “I appreciate a true to style beer.”

Component, Eagle Park and Enlightened Brewing each got their start in the space and Component’s DJ Kowalske said that they’ve been tossing around the idea of doing a collaboration brew with all four breweries at some point.

In April, Component announced that it was moving to a larger space on the building’s first floor. It’s holding its final event in the old spot on Saturday, ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Farms planning to sow 1.02 mln ha of winter barley this year
Ukrainian farms had sown 356,040 hectares of winter grains for the 2022 harvest as of Sept 13 or 5% of the expected area of 7.84 million hectares, the agriculture ministry said on September 14.

The area will include 6.68 million hectares of winter wheat, 1.02 million hectares of winter barley and some area of rye, it said.

Farmers had sown 331,170 hectares of winter wheat and 10,100 hectares of winter barley, the ministry said in a statement.

It also said Ukraine would sow 1.03 million hectares of winter rapeseed and the sowing was 75% complete.

Last year, the autumn drought reduced the area planted with winter grains, and farmers sowed 6.1 million hectares of winter wheat, 954,700 hectares of winter barley and 125,200 hectares of rye for the 2021 harvest.

One of the major grain growers and exporters globally, Ukraine plans to harvest a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021.

Brewery news Brussels: Brussels Beer Project on track to start brewing at new facility in December
Brussels Beer Project says it is on track to start operations in its new brewery in December 2021, with the delivery of the last fermentation tanks to the new site bringing it one step closer to the goal, The Brussels Times reported on September 14.

The new brewery is a turning point for the company and the tanks will allow the brewery to produce all its beers in Brussels. Currently, BBP has a small brewery in Rue Dansaert, while two-thirds of its production takes place at a partner brewery in Limburg.

Upon opening, the new brewery will have an annual capacity of 3.5 million litres, with the potential to increase to 5 million in time.

“This last tank going in is a big moment, but we still have a few more things to do. It’s a good moment to celebrate,” Co-founder Sébastien Morvan told the Brussels Times. “The plan is to start brewing from the 8 December and then take it from there. Our lease is 40 years, and then who knows what happens.”

The tanks were delivered by boat and lifted in by crane into the brewery in the “Port Sud” district of Biestebroeck in Anderlecht, an area that BBP co-founder Olivier de ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken ditches low-calorie beer Amstel 66
Heineken has ditched its low-calorie Amstel 66 after less than two years on the UK market, The Grocer reported on September 16.

Amstel owner Heineken launched the 3% abv beer, which drew its name from the fact one bottle contained 66 calories, in March 2020.

However the brand, whose sole retail listing was in Sainsbury’s, has now been removed from shelves.

Confirming the move, a Heineken spokesman said: “We constantly review our portfolio of ciders and beers to ensure that we are providing both our customers and our consumers with the best possible range of products.

“As a result of this latest review, we have taken the decision to remove Amstel 66 from our range.”

The brand performed modestly after its launch but failed to gain significant headway in the mults: its retail value stood at £1.5m over the year ending 15 May 2021, on volumes of 645,686 litres [Nielsen].

The core Amstel brand, however, saw a sales surge during the pandemic, adding a colossal £14.5m to its value – a rise of 28.9%, on volumes up 27.9% [Nielsen].

In the on-trade, meanwhile, Amstel, along with Birra Moretti, faced shortages earlier this year when Covid restrictions were eased.

At the time, a Heineken spokeswoman said demand for the ...More info on site
