Brewery news USA, MA: Craft brewers asking for more flexibility for small orders
After craft brewers in Massachusetts scored a major victory in January when the Legislature finally gave them more freedom to decide who distributes their product, brew pub owners are back asking Beacon Hill for a little more flexibility to fulfill small orders for their beers without the help of a middle man, the MetroWest Daily News reported on September 19.

David Slutz, co-founder of the Moby Dick Brewing Company in New Bedford, said he has no interest in hauling his beer all over the state.

What he would like to do, however, is sell a keg or two to the local restaurant without having to go through a distributor.

"What we're looking to do is simply service my local customers, most of which are tiny little companies, including Portuguese restaurants that have three taps," Slutz said. "They may buy a keg a week."

He was among the brewers and brew pub owners testifying this past week before the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure in support of a bill from Rep. Jonathan Zlotnik, D-Gardner, that would allow pub breweries to directly sell up to 50,000 gallons of beers in kegs, casks, barrels or bottles to anyone licensed to sell alcohol.

The bill would ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Guinness to launch a restaurant, pub and brewery in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood
The legendary Irish beer brand Guinness said on September 21 it will launch a restaurant, pub and brewery in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood in early 2023, “hopefully in time for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Jay Sethi, chief marketing officer of Guinness’ parent company, Diageo Beer Co., a subsidiary of global spirits giant Diageo.

The 15,000-square-foot operation, in a long-empty former railroad depot at 375 N. Morgan St., will feature an array of beers made on-site, as well as Guinness’ iconic dry Irish stout imported from Dublin, plus “Irish pub food you’d expect from Guinness,” Sethi said. He said the company hopes the pub will reflect Chicago neighborhoods in its food and beer by collaborating with local chefs and brewers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The pub, whose formal name will be announced in the coming months, will be a second U.S. location for the 262-year-old beer brand best known for its Guinness Draught, with an impenetrably black color that belies its easy-drinking, roasty nature at 4.2% alcohol. Guinness opened a production brewery outside Baltimore in 2017 that opened to the public a year later.

The Chicago operation will be far smaller, with a 10-barrel brewing system in a neighborhood rife with trendy restaurants and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Castle Island Brewing opening its second location this week
Norwood-based Castle Island Brewing is opening a second location this week, and it won’t be far from its namesake — South Boston’s famous Castle Island. The new brewery and taproom will open on Thursday, September 23, at 5 p.m., located inside the Cole Hersee Building at 10 Old Colony Ave., South Boston, the Eater Boston reported.

Drinkers can expect the taproom to feature a mix of Castle Island’s most beloved beers (like its excellent American pale ale, Candlepin, for example), as well as limited releases, one-offs, collaborations, and some new beers as they’re developed. The brewery will feature an events space and an outdoor patio with bocce courts.

Before its 2015 debut in Norwood, Castle Island Brewing initially planned to open in Boston proper but eventually found a home south of the city. “We love the home that we’ve built in Norwood dearly, and plan to have our production headquarters and taproom there for a long, long time,” says an FAQ on the brewery’s website. “But when we were presented with the opportunity to open up a second location in South Boston, we couldn’t say yes fast enough.”

The new taproom will feature South Shore-style bar pizza from Bardo’s Bar Pizza, along with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: 12 West Brewing Co. looking to open brand-new production facility in Mesa
12 West Brewing Co. is looking to open a brand-new production facility and its third taproom and restaurant in the East Valley, ABC15 Arizona reported on September 17.

The new 12 West Brewing brewery/taproom/full-service restaurant is proposed for Longbow Parkway near Recker Road in Mesa. The project was reviewed this week by the city of Mesa Design Review Board.

12 West, which started in 2016, already has two taproom locations in the East Valley. One in the Barnone project at Agritopia in Gilbert and another in downtown Mesa. It has a 10-barrel production facility, but the brewery’s owner, Bryan McCormik, said he wants to triple his production.

The new building – which McCormik called “the mothership” – will be two stories, 22,000 square feet and will have a 30-barrel brewing system. It will also have a full dining room and bar area, as well as large patios. The total cost of the project is slated to be around $9 million, McCormik said.

Brewery news USA, VA: Patch Brewery launches in Gordonsville
Patch Brewery launched Saturday, September 18 in Gordonsville and beer is not the only thing it’s offering, WVIR reported.

“There aren’t any other breweries with baseball fields and dog parks and kid zones and then all other things coming,” General Manager Clay Hysell said.

The other things will come in the next few phases. Patch says this is just phase one of their launch of the brewery.

“Stage two will be our inside beer, and then stage three is going to be hopefully a sequel of firepits,” Hysell said. “We’re hoping to build a nature trail over the wintertime because we have 14 acres all together.”

All of this land used to be the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Patch is now maximizing the space so that it can be open for all. There’s room for kids, dogs, and sports, and soon it could be a live music venue too.

“The VFW is here in Gordonsville, where my parents still live,” Co-founder Jon Craig said. “I’ve driven by it dozens of times, and every time I think wow these mountains are beautiful this would be a perfect spot for a brewery.”

The transformation and these plans have been in full motion since June. The owners say ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Landmade Brewing getting ready for November launch
A brewery on a farm near Poolesville is under construction, and its owner hopes it will open in November, BethesdaMagazine.com reported on September 21.

Gabriel Scott and his wife Amanda started Landmade Brewing on their family farm on Jerusalem Road in Poolesville, just off Md. 28.

The brewery will feature a tasting room, outdoor seating and an on-site food truck, among other features, Scott told Bethesda Beat. There will also be farm animals.

The tasting room and other parts of the brewery are under construction. Scott said the brewery will focus on beer production, but will also include ciders.

“We have eight acres of peaches and five acres of apples, both of which are being used for production,” he said.

Scott said they also grow produce and herbs on the farm.

He plans to buy hops for the beer locally and regionally. All production will be done on site, he said.

“Our mission is to create all different types of beer with Maryland products,” he said.

Some produce and grains might need to be purchased from Delaware or Virginia, Scott said.

The food menu will be seasonal, and will include sandwiches, sides and “fun iterations of beer food,” Scott said. The goal is to have a “full-blown hospitality experience,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Public House 28 Brewery already open in Chamberino
Fans of craft beer have a new location to drop by in Doña Ana County, roughly halfway between Las Cruces and El Paso along the scenic New Mexico Highway 28, Las Cruces Sun-News reported on September 21.

Public House 28 Brewery opened a few weeks ago in Chamberino at mile marker 10 along NM Highway 28. The unassuming destination surrounded by farmland is cover for an oasis ready for parched customers.

Owner John Bruker said he has wanted to open a brewery for at least six years. His background is in veterinary medicine, but he decided he needed a change. He said leaving the veterinary profession, rezoning his land and navigating other technicalities took years to complete. But timing was finally right this summer.

“I had been doing emergency small animal medicine since 1992. And that’s nights, weekends, holidays. And it's no sleep, stress, a lot of bad scenarios,” Bruker said. “We just needed to start doing something else.”

The past few years allowed him to set up the brewery to be as welcoming as possible to customers. Scattered and private seating, patios, trees, running water, a dog park and many more details make the place ideal for both large groups or private couples.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Non-alcoholic beer consumption more than doubled over last six years
With a wide range of world-famous brands and a plethora of craft brewers, there’s no question the Czech Republic is a heaven for beer lovers. Now, though, the country is also seeing dramatically increased interest in non-alcoholic beers, with consumption more than doubling over the last six years, Expats.cz reported on September 21.

The rise of non-alcoholic beers indicates a change in drinking habits, with a greater wish to enjoy beer in social gatherings, or simply for the taste, without any of the usual intoxicating effects.

As large Czech brewers announce autumn price hikes across their ranges in line with inflation, many are questioning old drinking habits. The proliferation of types of non-alcoholic beer makes it easier to enjoy a drink during a work lunch, or before driving. Others are now discovering the possibilities of beer mixed drinks, in which non-alcoholic beer is combined with fruit juice.

“Non-alcoholic beer thrives every year. In 2020, it accounted for 7.3 percent of the total amount of beer produced for the domestic market, growing by 1.2 percent year-on-year,” Martina Ferencová, Executive Director of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses, told Hospodářské noviny.

The rising prices of Czech beer do not seem to have deterred consumption, and ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Beer producer Hite Jinro ranked second among South Korea’s top performing companies in 2020
The South Korean government has named domestic food and beverage manufacturing giants CJ Cheiljedang, Hite Jinro and Nongshim as the 2020 national top performers in terms of food production, whilst celebrating an overall increase in output amid COVID-19 and food security concerns, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on September 21.

South Korea has made no secret of its food security concerns and worries about being over-reliant on imports for local staple foods such as wheat and soybeans, particularly after COVID-19 hit the region, and even developed a strategy earlier this year specifically targeting food security.

The productivity of the local food industry has also been a major concern due to COVID-19 interrupting supply chains and natural disasters such as floods, but according to a recent government report manufacturers appear to have pulled through despite the challenges to even achieve some growth in production.

“The domestic food industry grew to KRW84.33 trln (US$72.9 bln) in 2020, up 4.1% from KRW81.77 trln (US$70.6 bln) in the previous year [despite] being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges,” the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said via an official statement.

Hops news UK: A series of beer launches aims at re-popularising British hops
The growing thirst for craft beer has made British hops fall out of fashion because modern brewers use imported New World varieties that offer a fruitier flavour.

But now a Derbyshire craft beer brewer, a Worcestershire hop grower, and Tesco, want to reverse the decline by re-popularising British hops through a series of beer launches, ISN Magazine reported on September 21.

The first in the series, Brithop, made by Buxton Brewery, launches exclusively at Tesco this week and on the label, the beer is described as “an all British-grown IPA, showcasing some of the most exciting and aromatic new hops to be developed by British hop growers”.

The shift towards fruitier tasting New World hops from America, Australia and New Zealand began around 20 years ago with the birth of the craft beer movement and brewers who wanted their beers to taste boldly different.

Rather than copy traditional British beer styles such as best bitters and milds, they created new beers based on popular types from all over the world.

These include West Coast and New England IPAs which have taken over from the traditional British beers because of their new vibrant, fruity, flavours appealing to a ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Diageo looking to improve supply of local flagship beer Red Stripe
Diageo Plc, which trades as Red Stripe in Jamaica, is looking to improve the supply of the flagship Red Stripe beer and other products on the local market following the Government’s relaxing the restrictive measures that were in place to help control the spread of COVID-19, the Jamaica Loop News reported on September 19.

According to Head of Commercial Operations at the company, Sean Wallace, while there is no shortage of Red Stripe beer on the Jamaican market, some of the company’s products have been missing from the stocks of retailers.

Wallace said the delivery of the different brands that the company manufactures has been affected by the four continuous weekends of three-day no-movement which were in place.

“Our operations are driven by a circular model whereby we recycle our bottles for resale to the trade. With the (a) bottle shortage, we had to readjust our production plan, which created delays in restocking and sale to our customers,” said Wallace.

The no-movement days started each Saturday evening and ended on Wednesday at 5 am, eliminating commercial activities on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of each week.

On Wednesday, September 15, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced in Parliament, a change in the policy that was imposed under ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Budweiser to trial "ultra-low carbon" beer cans in the UK
Partnership between Budweiser and aluminium and packaging specialists EN+, Elval and Canpack will see five million 440ml low carbon beer cans available cross UK this autumn, Business Green reported on September 22.

Budweiser Brewing Group has announced plans to trial "ultra-low carbon" beer cans in the UK, as it gears up to make five million 440ml cans available to drinkers across the country this autumn.

The UK branch of multinational brewing giant AB InBev has partnered with Russian low carbon aluminium producer Rusal - part of the En+ Group - Poland's Canpack, and rolled aluminium manufacturer Elval to develop the cans using zero emissions technology and renewable electricity, it revealed yesterday.

Budweiser claims the beer cans, which are made from a mix of recycled aluminium and "ultra low carbon" aluminium produced by Rusal, will have the lowest carbon footprint of any AB InBev Europe can, with production of the packaging traceable back to its source.

The cans will also be filled with beer produced at Budweiser's breweries in South Wales and Lancashire, which are powered using 100 per cent renewable electricity, the firm said.

"Like our consumers, we care about climate change, and want to make it as easy as possible for people to choose ...More info on site
