Beer is a year-round favorite and one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the U.S. In fact, according to research from career resource site Zippia, of the 63 percent of U.S. adults who drink alcohol, 42 percent prefer beer over any other alcoholic beverage. With that in mind, Best Life set out to find the best-selling beer brand in the country.
To see which brews bring in the biggest dollars, the Best Life team consulted Zippia and the drinks business, the leading global trade publication for the beverage industry, both of which used the most recently available data gathered by IRI, a Chicago-based market research firm. The figures used for this ranking represent retail sales data across the U.S. for the year 2020. Data for 2021 sales had not yet been made available at the time of publishing.

Australia: Competition and Consumer Commission looking into Lion’s proposed buy-out of craft beer maker Fermentum
|
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is likely to announce its findings into Lion’s proposed buy-out of Stone & Wood’s parent company Fermentum on December 9 following a detailed market review, the Beer and Brewer reported on September 23.
As part of the three-month investigation, the ACCC is calling for public submissions so it can determine the acquisition’s impact on competition and whether any independent producer could fill the volume void left by the likes of Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale should it be absorbed into Lion’s portfiolio.
In its request for submissions document, the ACCC are particularly seeking views from interested parties on:
Whether Lion and Fermentum compete closely for the supply of beer;
The likely impact of the proposed acquisition on the price or service levels for the supply of beer,
and;
The availability of alternatives to customers and the ability of these alternatives to expand.
It’s also wanting to gauge views on how beer is marketed, supplied and consumed in Australia, asks “whether there are different and distinct categories of beer, for example whether craft beer is distinct from classic or premium beer?” and queries if any of the major liquor retailers could help a producer step up to and replace Fermentum’s

USA, NY: Constellation Brands to move its headquarters to Rochester
|
One of the largest producers of beer, wine and spirits in the world, Constellation Brands will be moving its headquarters and hundreds of jobs from Victor in Ontario County to the Aqueduct Building in downtown Rochester.
Governor Kathy Hochul was in Rochester on September 22 to officially announce the move.
"Constellation Brands' exciting decision to expand its regional operations and establish its new headquarters in downtown Rochester will help to further advance our efforts to create new, good-paying jobs and a thriving city center," Hochul said in a statement. "Downtown Rochester's Innovation Zone is already home to some of the most talent-rich companies in the world. This transformative project at the historic Aqueduct Building will also help to maximize our $50 million ROC The Riverway efforts, which are reimagining and transforming the waterfront along the beautiful Genesee River, helping Rochester to thrive for generations to come."
Constellation Brands expects to be operating at the Aqueduct Building by the spring of 2024.

North America: Barley production forecast down by 5.5 mln tonnes since June
|
North America’s barley production forecast is lower and currently set at 7.1 mln tonnes for Canada and 2.2 mln tonnes for the US, RMI Analytics said earlier in September.
At the beginning of June, the analysts’ estimates were 11.3 and 3.5 mln tonnes, respectively, for a total crop of 14.8 mln tonnes, whereby the current estimate is a combined 9.3 mln tonnes.
The global implications for a 5.5 mln tonnes reduction in North America’s output is significant and impactful beyond the current crop cycle, the RMI analysts said.
A problematic growing season for Canada in 2021 has been exasperated by rains including some hail damage at the end of August. With much of the crop ripe, the rainfall has not only interrupted harvest, it has raised the potential for chitted or pre-germinated barley in the field. The very early harvested barley will be the best quality with more questions being raised by what remains unharvested. Maltsters and grain companies are actively assessing the impact.
The USA barley harvest is nearly completed and to a degree has avoided the rains.
Imports of barley from Europe and possible Australia are needed by both countries, but the extent of them is being determined, the analysts said.

Ukraine: 17% of planned winter grains area sown as of September 20
|
Ukrainian farms had sown 1.32 million hectares of winter grains for the 2022 harvest as of Sept 20 or 17% of the expected area of 7.84 million hectares, the agriculture ministry said on September 21.
The area will include 6.68 million hectares of winter wheat, 1.02 million hectares of winter barley and some area of rye, it said.
Farmers had sown 1.2 million hectares of winter wheat and 51,2500 hectares of winter barley, the ministry said in a statement.
It also said Ukraine would sow 1.03 million hectares of winter rapeseed and the sowing was 86% complete.
Last year, the autumn drought reduced the area planted with winter grains, and farmers sowed 6.1 million hectares of winter wheat, 954,700 hectares of winter barley and 125,200 hectares of rye for the 2021 harvest.
One of the major grain growers and exporters globally, Ukraine plans to harvest a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021.

Ukraine has exported 12.8 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season versus 11.3 million at the same point a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on September 24.
That included 7.74 million tonnes of wheat, 3.43 million tonnes of barley and 1.4 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 60.7 million tonnes in 2021/22 from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The government has said grain exports could include 23.8 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
The ministry said on September 24 farms have harvested 46.4 million tonnes of grain as of Sept. 23 from 66.5% of the sown area and the yield averaged 4.38 tonnes per hectare.

South Korea: Korea's first single malt whiskey produced in hills of Namyangju
|
Whisky's best days in Korea appeared to be behind it in 2020 when the amount of imports hit its lowest mark in 21 years. But Bryan Do saw an opportunity when he noticed that the single malt whiskey market was still expanding, The Korea Times reported on September 24.
Teaming up with a master distiller from Scotland, Andrew Shands, and some others, he set up a distillery on a hillside in Namyangju, a location he thought perfect to capture Korea's unique tastes. Early this month, Three Societies produced its first bottle of single malt whiskey ― for the first time in the country.
Out of 1506 bottles released in this first limited edition, many have already been sold both here and to customers in five other territories, including Singapore and Hong Kong.
Do, the company's founder and CEO, told The Korea Times that his short-term ambition is, in three years, to export his whiskey products to Europe, including to Scotland and Ireland, where the liquor was born, when the products obtain legal whiskey status there.
