USA, PA & WA: Malteurop Maltings’ new distribution centres make access to US and Belgian malts easier than ever
|
MMC, one of the leading suppliers of North American Grown and Malted products and imported malts to North American craft brewers and distillers, is pleased to announce the opening of two additional U.S. distribution centers, Brewbound.com reported on September 28.
Based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Fife, Washington, these distribution points make it easier than ever for craft brewers and distillers in the Northeast and Northwest regions of the United States to get reliable, consistent delivery of MMC malts.
With the new distribution points, MMC is even more competitive than before. Brewers and distillers have an additional option to choose from.
The opening of the Northeast and Northwest distribution centers now gives brewers and distillers across North America six MMC distribution points, including existing distribution centers in Denver, Colorado; Louisville Kentucky; Fort Worth, Texas; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
All six distribution centers have a supply of MMC’s base malts and specialty malts (including its distillers malt), as well as MMC’s Bavarian Pilsen and French Pilsen malts imported from Europe. In addition to making delivery of these malts more reliable and consistent, more distribution points also means quicker delivery and reduced freight costs.

Canada: Barley exports increase significantly in 2020-21
|
For 2020-21, Canada’s barley exports totaled 4.57 million tonnes (Mt), including 3.82 Mt of exports of barley grain and 0.75 Mt of exports of grain equivalent products. Exports increased significantly from 2019-20, primarily due to a significant increase in barley grain exports to China, although exports to the US and Japan fell, based on Statistics Canada’s (STC) trade data. Canada’s barley exports to China in 2020-21 surged to 3.25 Mt, up from 1.44 Mt in the previous crop year, pushing China’s share of Canadian barley exports to more than 90%, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their September report.
Barley imports for 2020-21 increased to 0.30 Mt, up sharply from 0.06 Mt last year and above 0.26 Mt in 2002-03 when Canadian barley production last suffered from severe drought. This increase was due to strong feed demand in the western provinces, particularly in Alberta, as robust exports exhausted the domestic feed barley supply.
Total domestic use decreased by 8% from last year on a drop of 11% for feed use, though the industrial use rebounded from the previous year’s low.

USA, KY: Diageo opens its first carbon-neutral distillery in Lebanon
|
Diageo has opened its first carbon-neutral distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, The Lane Report said on September 28.
The site will support the local community with 30 full-time jobs while also sourcing 100% non-GMO corn locally. The 72,000 square-foot facility has the capacity to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year and has begun distilling Bulleit Bourbon using electrode boilers that are powered by 100% renewable electricity throughout the cooking, distillation, and dry house processes.
Bulleit is the first and lead brand being produced at the Diageo Lebanon Distillery – and supplements existing production at the nearby Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
Designed with sustainability at its core, the distillery is built to ensure that fossil fuels are not used during production. By partnering with Inter-County Energy and East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC), Diageo is sourcing a mix of wind and solar energy to power the electrode boilers, onsite electric vehicles, internal and external lighting, and equipment-making the facility one of the largest of its kind in North America.

USA: Non-alcoholic beer gaining traction in complicated space
|
Non-alcoholic beer is gaining traction in the US and brands are trying to get in on the action. But the space is complicated. Companies are simultaneously tapping into an increased interest in moderation and sobriety, while also fighting a stigma about the quality and relevance of non-alcoholic beer, the Morning Brew reported on September 27.
IWSR, an alcohol industry market research firm, found that the US market for no- and low-alcohol drinks grew by more than 30% in terms of volume last year. Despite the upward trajectory, brands are still largely trying to figure out who their audiences are and how to capture them.
“We are very much in category-creation mode,” said Borja Manso Salinas, VP of marketing at Heineken USA, which brought its Heineken 0.0 drink to the US in early 2019. He explained that the non-alcoholic category in the US is still nascent compared to the scene in Europe.
In Spain, for example, beers with little to no booze account for 13% of all beers sold, according to data from the country’s brewer’s association. USA, KS: Transport Brewing working on second facility in Gardner
|
Like any new business, starting up a brewery can be a hard process. Transport Brewery, which opened in 2018, was no stranger to those struggles. After overcoming the typical obstacles to opening a new business, Transport has become a staple at the Johnson Drive location in Shawnee, Kansas, flatlandkc.org reported on September 28.
In fact, Transport has been doing so well in Shawnee that expansion plans are now in the works. In an announcement on their Facebook page, Transport broke the news that they are working on a second facility to be located in downtown Gardner, Kansas.
The bigger location will allow Transport to develop new beers without clogging up the production pipeline for mainstays. The bigger facility also will give the brewery an opportunity to add an on-site kitchen rather than rely on food trucks out front. Finally, a bigger building means more space for guests.
For anyone reading this and worrying that their current location will go away, fret not. Transport plans on keeping the Shawnee location in addition to the new Gardner spot. USA, OH: Broadview Brewing Co.’s grand opening scheduled for October 2
|
Broadview Brewing Co.’s grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, Cleveland.com reported on September 27.
The dog-friendly brewery is making and selling its own beer, but its permit to sell other alcohol will be in place by the grand-opening celebration, the owners said. The means expect wine and high-end bourbon and tequila.
The opening will be marked with live music, and eight to 10 beers should be on tap for the celebration noon to 11 p.m.
Janice and Terry DeLap own the brewery at 4001 Towpath Road. It’s off of Broadview Road (Ohio 176) just south of Interstate 80.

USA, MA: Hot Plate Brewing Co. getting ready to open in downtown Pittsfield
|
Downtown Pittsfield is ready to welcome its newest tenant, a microbrewery called Hot Plate Brewing Co., Live 95.9 reported on September 27.
Mike Dell'Aquila and his wife Sarah Real are award-winning homebrewers who after 14 years of living in New York City, have relocated to The Berkshires to fulfill their dream of opening their own brewhouse.
Dell'Aquila says they chose the name after first deciding to start planning a brewery and there was an issue with the condo building they has been living in. "The city shut off our gas, which powered our heat, hot water, and our stove. Rather than giving up on the dream, we bought a Hot Plate and continued working on our craft and our recipes, and so we felt like this name celebrates the idea of persistence and perseverance."
The brewhouse has tentative plans to open on the first floor of the Onota Building on the corner of North and School Streets, an tenant building that currently has open retail space on the street level. Details are still in the works.

USA, NY: HopWin’s Brewery celebrates its grand opening
|
The new HopWin’s Brewery in Bay Shore held its grand opening of their establishment at 1460 N. Clinton Avenue, Bay Shore on Saturday, Sept. 25, the GreaterBayShore reported.
The brewery was founded by brother-in-laws William Hoppe and Steve Winn with their wives Rhiannon Hoppe and Jennifer Winn.
The foursome formed their company in 2015, brewing creations from home. They later took over the space in Bay Shore — which is next to fellow brewing company The Brewers Collective — and transformed it into their new home base for creating beer.

USA, MN: Rosemount to get a new brewery, winery and self-pour tap house soon
|
Rosemount's drink menu grew this week as the city council OK'd plans for a winery, Omni Orchards, and a self-pour tap house called Tap Society, Yahoo News reported on September 25.
Meanwhile, Rosemount officials this month approved a building permit for North 20 Brewing, which will go up in the northern part of the city.
All three businesses plan to start construction this fall.
Omni Brew Holdings will build an 8,000-square-foot winery facility with a tasting room and kitchen space at 15701 Biscayne Ave. A 4,000-square-foot front patio is also planned in the initial build of the business, to be called Omni Orchards Farm Winery. Future phases could include a vineyard and a second building for either more production space or private events, said Justin Walsh, who co-founded Omni Brewing Co. with brewer Zack Ward.
Omni Brew Holdings currently runs a brewery and taproom, Omni Brewing Co., in Maple Grove. Ward told the city council Tuesday they are excited to "dabble in wine and cider."
Walsh said the Maple Grove location relies on food trucks to feed guests, but the plan in Rosemount is to find a partner to cook from the kitchen space.

USA, MO: Logboat Brewing Co. one step closer to expansion
|
Logboat Brewing Co. wants to expand. To do this, the business needs a larger production facility, which in turn would lead to a larger bar space, the Columbia Daily Tribune reported on September 25.
There are just a few wrinkles.
When the City of Columbia adopted its unified development code in 2017, the current size of Logboat's bar and tasting room was allowed, even though it didn't meet the code. Logboat was exempt since it opened in 2014, prior to the adoption of the UDC.
Because Logboat is now seeking a bar and building expansion, the business needed to seek conditional use permit approval from the city's Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission approved the permit during its meeting Thursday, and now it moves on to the Columbia City Council for a final decision.
Logboat owners already sought a rezoning from mixed neighborhood commercial to general industrial. The commission approved that request last month, and the city council followed suit during its consent agenda Monday.
Another issue in the expansion plan is parking.
Logboat seeks to convert a triangular-shaped gravel lot it owns adjacent to the facility into an ADA-compliant parking lot, a condition of the permit.

USA, WA: Chuckanut Brewing closing their Bellingham brewery
|
Famed lager makers Chuckanut Brewing are closing their Bellingham, Washington based brewery and kitchen, The New School reported on September 28.
The company is not slowing down though, just refocusing with expanded production at their larger location in Burlington at the Port of Skagit where they will more than double in size. Combined with a new Portland taproom location dubbed the P Nut Chuckanut Beer Hall, the expansion will allow the brewery to bottle and can more of their beers.
The upcoming Portland location on SE Division district will have indoor and outside seating with beer, cider and sodas by the glass and the option to purchase packaged Chuckanut beers for off premise including party kegs.
The contraction part of the equation is that the building in Bellingham where Chuckanut started has been sold and the new ownership wishes to use the building for their own project. Chuckanut will be leaving Bellingham for the time being, but always on the look-out for another good location. With two big projects to work on through 2022 the company will be busy. The last day the Bellingham site will be open for food and beer will be mid-October.

Australia: Grains Industry Association of Western Australia issues malting barley variety receival recommendations
|
The Grains Industry Association of Western Australia's (GIWA) barley council officially finalised the malt barley variety receival recommendations for next year's harvest earlier this month, The Farm Weekly reported.
Malt barley segregations for Maximus CL are set to be available in some form in every Western Australian port zone, except Geraldton, for the 2022/23 harvest.
Other notable changes for 2022/23 include Bass and Flinders being removed from the offerings in the vast majority of areas, with the former set to only be offered as a limited segregation in Kwinana North and South and the latter only in Albany South and Esperance.
La Trobe will move from a limited to a niche segregation across all areas, except for Geraldton where it will not be offered at all.
GIWA barley council chairman and Beaumont grower Lyndon Mickel said grower production of Bass, Flinders and La Trobe was declining.
"Bass and Flinders are both, however, considered as significant varieties for malting and brewing end-use in South East Asia and Japan as they can be malted without the use of additives and are well-known by the market," Mr Mickel said.

Kenya: Fuel, beer prices set to go up again
|
Less than two weeks since pump prices of fuel hit a historic high, causing a countrywide uproar, consumers in Kenya are facing yet another increase on at least 31 products, The Star reported on September 27.
This comes with the adjustment of the excise duty rate by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), a move that will force manufacturers and importers to pass costs to consumers.
It will see fast-moving excisable goods such as fuel, beer, cigarettes, bottled water, energy drinks, and juice cost more from October 1, with consumers who are reeling from the effects of Covid-19, amid reduced spending power, forced to dig deeper into their pockets to access these products.
In a notice issued on August 10, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General said the taxman would adjust the rate of excise duty using 4.97 per cent, as the average inflation rate covering the 2020/21 financial year.
As a result of the upcoming increases, consumers will pay Sh5.77 more for a litre of beer while prices for spirits will rise by up to Sh13.20.
A litre of petrol will rise by Sh1.09, while diesel and kerosene will increase by Sh0.566 per litre each.

Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Mercari Inc. are working to prevent Asahi’s foam-generating canned beer from being resold at inflated prices, The Japan Times reported on September 26.
The major beer firm and the online flea market operator signed a cooperative agreement, as Asahi Super Dry Nama Jokki Can beer is being posted on Mercari’s site at prices far above the retail price.
When users search for the beer on Mercari, a message appears saying, “The price may have soared.” Mercari’s official blog and Asahi’s official website also issue alerts.
Asahi launched the canned beer, which mimics draft beer in a mug, in April. It’s become popular for the way foam rises when the can’s top is pulled completely off to create a wide opening.
A single 340-milliliter can is expected to be sold for around ¥219, but on the Mercari site, it sometimes goes for about ¥500, Asahi Breweries said.

Spain: Heineken goes green in Spain starting with Seville brewery

Heineken Spain are continuing to “think green”. They have committed to “innovation and sustainability” with a new logistics model for cities in Spain. The brewery is paving the way to “green delivery” with their “last mile” sustainable mobility project, the Euro Weekly News reported on September 28.
The executive president of Heineken Spain, Guillaume Duverdier said: “In the Heineken Spain family we have the ambition to make beers that the world, people and the planet like, we are committed to being carbon neutral throughout our value chain by 2040, and that means working on sustainability, from the field to the bar”,
“We have already managed to reduce our CO2 emissions in distribution by 23.4% in the last ten years and with this project we are focusing on sustainable mobility”.
The new project will start in Seville. The company aim to extend it to other capitals across Spain. In Sevilla the project will “avoid the emission into the atmosphere of more than 21,450 tonnes of CO2 each year in the city”.
Heineken believe that sustainable mobility is “a necessary challenge to meet the objective of climate neutrality that the European Union has set for 2050, which involves reducing transport-related emissions by 90%”.

Japan: Sapporo debuts hard seltzers and beer-like beverage nationwide

Japanese brewery giant Sapporo is debuting its first hard seltzer products and a beer-like beverage across supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide, as it looks to strengthen its home-consumption portfolio amid the COVID-19 pandemic, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on September 28.
These latest products come under Sapporo’s main business - alcoholic beverages. The other pillars comprise food and soft drinks as well as real estate.
Revenue of alcoholic beverages increased 0.2% in Q2 2021 to reach JPY 130.5 billion (US$1.2 billion). The increase is mostly from ready-to-drink (RTD) sales from growing at-home consumption and its overseas business, buffering the decline in commercial-use beer and restaurant business due to COVID-19.
It is noteworthy that RTD sales volume increased 48% year-on-year.
Sapporo is hoping to strengthen its products for home-consumption through the launch of its hard seltzer products under the Water Sour brand and a beer-like beverage named The Drafty.
Hard seltzers first became popular in the US in 2013, and since then popularity has spiked worldwide, contributed by growing demand from health-conscious consumers for its relatively lower calorie and alcohol content.
They typically comprise of an alcohol mixed with carbonated water and fruit flavouring whether from fruit juice or artificial flavouring.

UK: Collaboration beer by Czech brewers Budweiser Budvar and Pivovar Clock to become available from October

Czech brewers Budweiser Budvar and Pivovar Clock have released a collaboration beer to enhance the reputation of all Czech beer globally, The Drinks Business reported on September 28.
The beer, which is a 5.2%-ABV lager named Bohemian Idols will be available from October at a series of tap takeovers around the UK in a limited run of 20 litre kegs, as well as a small number of 500ml cans at select venues.
The name ‘Bohemian Idols’ is a link to the No Idols beer range brewed by Pivovar Clock, and also reflects both breweries’ place in the beer culture of Bohemia.
Bohemian Idols was brewed in the Pivovar Clock brewery in Potštejn, eastern Bohemia, by brewmasters Jakub Sychra and Aleš Dvořák of Budvar. For the recipe, the brewers used two Czech hop varieties, Saaz Late and Kazbek together with Budvar’s traditional malts, sourced from the Hana region of Moravia. The double decoction mashing process was followed by six weeks of cold conditioning in Pivovar Clock’s cellars.
