Canada: Number of brewing facilities up 8% in 2020
|
The beer and brewing industry in Canada faced various challenges and changes amid COVID-19 in 2020, Beer Canada said in its latest annual Industry Trends report.
The number of brewing facilities increased by 8.0%, from 1120 in 2019 to 1210 in 2020. Most of Canada’s breweries are small, local operations, with 94% producing less than 15,000 hectolitres of beer. Nationally, the number of brewing facilities per 100,000 drinking age adults increased by 8.1% from 3.7 to 4.0 for the year. The increase decelerated significantly from last year's increase of 11%.
Provincially, New Brunswick led the way with 9.4 breweries per 100,000 drinking age adults, followed by Nova Scotia with 8.7 and Prince Edward Island with 7.8. In comparison, Manitoba, at 1.9 breweries per 100,000 drinking age adults, had the lowest rate.
Domestic production was down for 2020, having decreased by 0.3% to 22,674,000 hectolitres. Total national beer sales declined by 1.4% in 2020 to 21,118,230 hl. Domestic sales remained relatively unchanged, where import sales declined by 8%.
Beer continues to have a substantial impact on Canada’s economy. Conference Board of Canada figures show beer supports 149,000 Canadian jobs, with a labour income of $5.3 billion while contributing $13.6 billion to Canada’s GDP.

USA: Constellation Brands’ beer unit posts 14% net sales growth in the three months through August
|
Constellation Brands posted on October 6 sales up 5% on an organic basis to $2.37 billion in the three months through August, representing its fiscal second quarter, with its beer business in double-digit growth and its upscale wine portfolio led by The Prisoner, Kim Crawford, and Meiomi contributing solid momentum.
Operating income slipped 8% to $730 million on an organic basis, however, weighed down by increased costs and a slowdown in the hard seltzer business.
Constellation’s organic wine and spirits sales jumped 15% to $510 million for the quarter, as organic shipment volume increased 5.7%. The company touted newcomers Meiomi Cabernet Sauvignon, Kim Crawford Illuminate, and The Prisoner Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay as all being among the top 10 innovations at the high end of the U.S. wine category in IRI channels since their respective rollouts. Most recently, SND exclusively reported the launch of former Prisoner offshoot Saldo as its own brand, in a bid to further tap the high end.

UK: Cask beer sales plummet by 40% since April pub reopening
|
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has urged a rallying call to support cask beer as sales plummeted by 40% since pubs reopened in April, The Drinks Business reported on September 27.
According to the latest sales data from the BBPA – the leading trade association representing brewers and pubs – cask beer sales since pubs reopened after the winter lockdown were down by 76 million pints compared with 2019.
From April 2021 to July 2021, 113 million pints of cask ale were sold in pubs across the UK. During the same period in 2019 and before the pandemic, 189 million pints were sold.
Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “The plight of cask beer is a huge concern for our sector. Pubs are the home of cask beer so if sales of it are declining then it means the viability of our pubs are reducing too.

The rapid rise of premium beer and craft breweries has created fresh business opportunities in China, the largest beer market in the world, as local drinkers pay more attention to superior quality and exclusivity, CEO of Portuguese brewing company Super Bock Group has said.
Rui Lopes Ferreira told Xinhua in a recent interview that he has observed an expansion in China's premium beer market, thanks to the shift in retail consumption online due to COVID-19, a change in consumers' taste preference, and rising purchasing power in the country of 1.4 billion people.
"The Chinese beer market has shown amazing figures. But it's important to note that in total it has been declining," Ferreira noted. "There is a trend of premiumization, which obviously we want to explore and take profit."
"Our brand is positioned as a premium imported brand, and we can leverage the rise of this segment," said the CEO.
According to the China Beer Market Study 2021 by MarketResearch.com, China is the world's largest beer market by sales, with an annual consumption of almost 45.7 billion litres.

USA, ID: Idaho barley production down by 21% this year
|
Idaho remains the US top barley-producing state this year despite total barley production in the state decreasing by 21 percent compared with 2020, marketscreener.com reported on October 1.
According to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Idaho farmers produced 43.6 million bushels of barley in 2021, down from 55 million bushels in 2020.
The decreased production was due to significantly reduced yields caused by severe drought conditions and a major early-season heat wave.
"Yields were off quite a bit from what they should have been," said Teton farmer Dwight Little.
"All of our yields for both wheat and barley were about 60-70 percent of normal," said Tim Dillin, who farms under dryland conditions in Bonners Ferry, which normally gets a good amount of rainfall. "We just didn't get the spring rains we normally get and the heat just made it worse."
Gordon Gallup, who farms under dryland conditions in Ririe, said his barley yields were way down this year. He said the lack of precipitation this year was bad enough but a string of 100-degree days in June exacerbated the situation.

USA, ID: Idaho farmers offered a lot more money to grow barley next year

Idaho barley farmers are being offered a lot more money to grow their crop next year, marketscreener.com reported on September 30.
Major beer brewers are aggressively pursuing contracts with Idaho farmers to grow barley next year and the amount they are offering is well above what barley farmers are normally paid for their commodity.
Rupert farmer Mike Wilkins normally gets paid between $9.50 and $10 per hundredweight (cwt) for his barley. He will be paid $14 per cwt for his barley next year.
"This is the highest price I've seen since I've been growing barley," said Wilkins, who has grown the crop for three decades.
Idaho farmers typically grow about a third of the nation's barley crop.
Malt barley is a critical part of the beer-brewing process and about 75 percent of the barley produced in Idaho is malt barley, while the rest is used for human food or animal feed.
Most of the malt barley produced in Idaho is purchased by major beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors.
The vast majority of Idaho's malt barley crop is grown under contract and major brewing companies are aggressively seeking contracts for next year, said Laura Wilder, executive director of the Idaho Barley Commission.

Ukraine: Barley exports total 3.78 mln tonnes so far in 2021/22
|
Ukraine has exported 14.36 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season versus 12.15 million at the same point a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on October 1.
That included 8.94 million tonnes of wheat, 3.78 million tonnes of barley and 1.43 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine may thresh a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.
Exports could jump to 60.7 million tonnes in 2021/22 from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The government has said grain exports could include 24.4 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
The ministry said on October 1 farms have harvested 46.99 million tonnes of grain from 67.3% of the sown area and the yield averaged 4.38 tonnes per hectare.

Australia: Australian Grain Technologies releases two new barley varieties
|
They may be named after creatures of ancient mythology, but the two new barley varieties from Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) are anything but primitive, the Farm Weekly reported on October 1.
Cyclops and Minotaur are the result of AGT's barley breeding program which was launched in 2014 and offer growers greater yields and improved reliability.
Throughout its field evaluation, Cyclops revealed itself to be the highest yielding barley variety in Western Australia, while Minotaur demonstrated an average six per cent yield advantage over popular RGT Planet.
AGT barley breeder Paul Telfer said they viewed Cyclops as an all-rounder, while Minotaur had proven an ideal substitute for RGT Planet in medium to high rainfall zones.
"Cyclops performed exceptionally well in the medium rainfall, medium yield potential environments, where it has set a new yield benchmark for the majority of Australia and it also has a physical grain quality and disease resistance package that compares well with most other varieties on the market," Mr Telfer said.
"Minotaur on the other hand, because it has been bred for Australian conditions, is better able to deal with our seasonal variability than European varieties, so it combines the top-end yield potential of European barley, like RGT Planet, with lower risk

Ukraine: Ukraine reports progress in winter grains sowing

Ukrainian farms had sown 3.1 million hectares of winter wheat for the 2022 harvest as of Oct 4 or 46% of the expected area, the agriculture ministry said on October 5.
Winter wheat accounts for 95% of Ukraine's total wheat sowing area.
The ministry also said that winter barley had been sown on 252,000 hectares or 12% of the planned area and rye sowing had been 66% completed with 106,000 hectares covered.
Last year, the autumn drought reduced the area planted with winter grains, and farmers sowed 6.1 million hectares of winter wheat, 954,700 hectares of winter barley and 125,200 hectares of rye for the 2021 harvest.
One of the major grain growers and exporters globally, Ukraine plans to harvest a record 80.6 million tonnes of grain in 2021.
