Brewery news USA, OK: Oklahoma’s first Native American-owned brewery Skydance Brewing Co. launches in downtown Oklahoma City
About 1,000 people turned out for the grand opening Saturday, October 2 of Oklahoma’s first Native American-owned brewing company in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoman.com reported.

Skydance Brewing Co. celebrated its new taproom and 15-barrel brewery on 1 NE 7 St. from late morning to midnight. Skydance’s CEO, Jake Keyes, a member of the Iowa Tribe, founded Skydance in 2018 and has been developing the bar in Oklahoma City’s Automobile Alley for more than two years.

“It’s been a journey,” Keyes said. “It’s nice to see people. It’s really now just starting to hit me. We’d been so busy, immersed in trying to get this going, that it’s suddenly like, ‘Wait a minute, people are here now!’”

When the grand opening celebration began at 11 a.m., lines had already wrapped out the door of the taproom and beyond the patio.

Grant Ogle, a sales representative at the brewery, has been employed by Skydance since April and has worked in the brewing industry for many years.

“This is definitely the cleanest opening I’ve ever done,” Ogle said. “Openings are usually just pure madness, but today has felt well-coordinated.”

Bobbi Gabler, Keyes’ fiancee and Skydance’s director of operations, was busy interacting with guests and assisting the taproom staff.

Brewery news USA, NC: Hi-Wire Brewing to open new location in Charlotte by spring 2022
Hi-Wire Brewing plans to check off another stop on the North Carolina map by opening a new retail location in the state’s largest city of Charlotte, Brewbound.com reported on October 7.

This new brewery and taproom, set to open in Spring 2022, will become the fourth North Carolina city in which the Asheville-based brewery has opened premises, though it marks the sixth location in the state including three Asheville locations, and the eighth in the company overall with out-of-state taprooms in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky. Hi-Wire has opened or is in the process of opening three of those locations in just the past 10 months with the Wilmington, North Carolina, spot opening mid-December 2020, Louisville opening late in August 2021, and Asheville’s RAD Beer Garden and Distribution Center set to open in November of this year.

Hi-Wire Brewing Charlotte will be located at 330 West Tremont Avenue in the bustling South End neighborhood just across the street from Pins Mechanical and a short walk away from nearby Sycamore Brewing, the currently under construction Puttery high-tech miniature golf course, and the new 23-story Lowe’s Global Technology Center. “We typically like to look in up-and-coming neighborhoods for our locations, but South End is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Iron Springs Pub & Brewery announces purchase of Iron Springs Pub & Brewery in Fairfax
HenHouse Brewing Co. announced on October 6 that it has purchased the Iron Springs Pub & Brewery in Fairfax, marking its first foray outside Sonoma County as well into food service after almost 10 years in business, The Press Democrat reported on October 6.

The Santa Rosa-based brewery has bought the brewpub from Michael and Anne Altman for an undisclosed price.

Iron Springs will continue operations through mid-November when it will begin the process of transforming into HenHouse’s first brewpub that will open early next year. The couple were looking to transition out of craft beer while HenHouse had been exploring opportunities to grow outside Sonoma County, said Collin McDonell, co-founder and chief executive officer of HenHouse.

“Marin has been super good for us,” McDonnell said. “We really love the community.”

The company, which is known for its rotating series of hoppy India pale ale beers as well as a strong commitment to ensuring fresh, cold beer on tap handles and retail shelves throughout the Bay Area, already operates its brewery and tasting room in Santa Rosa and another tasting room in Petaluma.

The ownership structure of friends and families remains the same, McDonnell said, as HenHouse is not relying on private equity investors nor ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Still Fields Brewery now open in Meaford
A new brewery dedicated to “crafting creative, experimental, spontaneous and wild beer” is now open in Meaford, a community in Ontario’s Grey County, the Canadian Beer News reported on October 6.

Still Fields Brewery has been founded by Margaret Curtis, Steven Ormsby, and Owen and Jaclyn Roth, and is located on a family farm which is also home to Highland Hop Yard.

The brewery has launched with a core line-up for four beers – Grisette (4% abv), Saison (5.6% abv), Hoppy Saison (5.6% abv), and Lager (4.5% abv) – all using Highland hops, and all fermented and/or aged in oak barrels.

Retail sales of the beers – 750 ml bottles of the first three, and 330 ml bottles of the lager – are currently limited to on-site purchases, with plans to add an online shop in coming weeks. The brewery also has a patio area where glasses of beer can be enjoyed.

Still Fields Brewery is located at 317 714 3rd Line in Meaford, and is open Monday to Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Friday to Sunday from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM.

Brewery news USA, TX: Fass Brewing Co. holds soft opening in Conroe
Fass Brewing Co. held a soft opening the weekend of Oct. 1 to begin training its staff for the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival, The Community Impact Newsletter reported on October 6.

The brewpub offers 15 craft beers and a limited food menu.

Fass Brewing will continue to be open throughout the festival Oct. 6-7 from 2-8 p.m., Oct. 8-9 from 2 p.m.-2 a.m. and Oct. 10 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. A grand opening will be announced for a later date.

Fass Brewing, located in downtown Conroe at 236 N. Main St., is the fourth brewery or brewpub in the city of Conroe, joining Southern Star Brewing, B-52 Brewing and Copperhead Brewery. Brewers Dylan Emmons and Aaron Edrington have each spent many years homebrewing and working at other breweries, including at Karbach Brewing Co. and Eureka Heights Brewery in Houston.

Brewery news USA, NY: One-Eyed Cat Brewing to set up shop in Williamsville next year
The years-long taproom search is finally over for One-Eyed Cat Brewing, who will set up shop next year on Main Street in Williamsville inside the former Pairings Wine Bar, the Step Out Buffalo reported on October 6.

The space offers approximately 2,000 square feet, though it needs to be adjusted for a taproom. Since it is a former wine bar, they will need to install draft towers and plan to open with eight taps. The location features 20 parking spaces, as well as street parking nearby.

For food, they have partnered with Pork Bellies BBQ, an award-winning smoked meat and BBQ company, who will run the taproom’s kitchen.

The brewhouse will start as a 2bbl system with plans for eight fermenters. They also plan to open with a barrel aging program featuring 20 barrels, a combination of bourbon, tequila, gin and rum barrels.

They plan to have an outdoor patio with a gas-fed fire pit, lawn area for music or lounging, and a lounge area with a fireplace and TV for Bills games.

If you’re unfamiliar with their beer, a few of the eccentric beer styles you can expect are a kettle soured imperial stout, Mexican hot chocolate porter, all-Citra hopped imperial IPA, smoked Bohemian ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Sturdy Shelter Brewing receives approval to open in downtown Batavia
A plan to open a small brewery in downtown Batavia, with a taproom that could accommodate 200 people, received unanimous approval from the Batavia City Council on October 4, the Chicago Daily Herald reported.

Sturdy Shelter Brewing received a conditional-use permit to open in a 141-year-old building at 10 S. Shumway Ave.

Owner Frank Mercadente intends to open the brewery by spring.

Mercadente told the council the brewery would have a 10-barrel brewing system and produce about 500 barrels of beer in its first year of operation.

He intends to brew lagers, stouts and India pale ales. "You can't have a brewery without IPAs," Mercadente joked.

Sturdy Shelter will have a deck, where patrons can enjoy a view of the nearby Fox River.

According to its application, the brewery's name comes from a verse in the Book of Sirach in the Catholic Bible: "Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter: whoever finds one has found a treasure."

Mercadente was formerly a youth minister for St. John Neumann Catholic Church in St. Charles. He owns Cultivation Ministries, which provides training for running Catholic Church youth ministries.

Mayor Jeff Schielke said the building, initially called the Batavia Opera House, was a movie theater for a long time. Older Batavia residents recall ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Illinois’ first nonalcoholic brewery Go Brewing eyeing January launch
A Naperville entrepreneur is turning his business skills from the automotive world to what he says is the untapped market of nonalcoholic craft beer, the Chicago Tribune reported on October 4.

Joe Chura wants to open Illinois’ first nonalcoholic brewery to give consumers an alternative to its alcoholic counterpart.

Go Brewing would open in January at the 1665 Quincy Ave. site currently occupied by 2 Fools Cidery, according to documents submitted to the city of Naperville. A tasting room would follow in March, the same time at which full production and distribution should be underway, its liquor license application said.

The facility already has the setup needed for their operations, documents said. Only aesthetic renovations will be required.

2 Fools will be moving to a new, larger site because it needs more space for production, a company Facebook post said. No location has been announced but it will have enough square footage for them to add more tanks and taps, the post said.

Go Brewing’s taproom would offer five to six nonalcoholic beers, similar to the taprooms in traditional breweries, as well as food trucks and live music. Its location is in the same industrial area as Solemn Oath Brewery.

Because they will be touting the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Walking Distance Brewing Co. to have its grand opening this week-end
You see a hatchback headed down the street loaded front and back with about 250 pounds of pumpkins. It’s only natural for one to suppose that the driver needed all of those gourds to make beer.

Well, it was only natural for Teddy Valinski, he of the hatchback and the pumpkins, to think that. Because that was exactly what he was doing, the Union County Daily Digital reported on October 7.

Mr. Valinski needed the pumpkins for a batch of beer he was brewing at Walking Distance Brewing Co., 222 E. 8th St., Marysville, a new watering hole on the south side of Uptown Marysville which is having its Grand Opening this weekend, a debut that does indeed include pumpkin ale.

“I had to get them here somehow,” Mr. Valinski said of the pumpkins while making a motion toward his three-door car the size of kayak. “That’s all I had.”

We are happy to report that the pumpkins, Mr. Valinski and his vehicle all made it back Walking Distance Brewing Co. unscathed. The pumpkins were immediately deseeded and chopped up for use in making an ale that has an aura of autumn and will be available this weekend.

Mr. Valinski is the brewmaster and co-owner, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Double Clutch Brewing Co. aiming to launch this month in Evanston
After years of planning and an additional year of COVID-19 delays, Double Clutch Brewing Co. is finally aiming to open its doors this month, the Evanston RoundTable reported on October 6.

The brewpub was originally set to open Memorial Day 2020, but when the stainless steel brewing tanks it ordered got held up in China, construction came to a halt, despite the tanks being assembled back in 2019.

“Everything with labor and materials has been hard to come by, even down to the shipping supplies,” Head Brewer Scott Frank said about the difficulties.

One of Double Clutch’s brewing partners owns the building, so its retail space at 2121 Ashland Ave. was never in jeopardy.

Frank said that while most breweries are focusing on India pale ales, or IPAs, Double Clutch will be zeroing in on German and other European lager styles. These lagers require specialized equipment because they rely more on the malt body rather than hops characteristics.

“We have a unique system that allows us to control the mash, which is the part of the process that converts the starches into sugars so that we can then add yeast and turn it into beer,” Frank said.

Not only is Double Clutch’s system sophisticated in capability, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Upcoming Holy Trinity Brewing Company’s menu evokes the owners’ faith
An upcoming Downtown Columbus brewpub has a menu that evokes the owners' faith, The Columbus Dispatch reported on October 7.

The Holy Trinity Brewing Company's craft beer list includes names like Jesus Loves Blondes (a blonde ale), Sneaky Jesus (a Belgian tripel), Christ on a Cracker (an American wheat beer), and UK Jesus (a British brown ale).

Husband and wife co-founders Tim and Joann McFeely said they were drawn together 16 years ago by their Christian beliefs, along with a love of sports and craft beer.

It was those mutual interests that the McFeelys call the "Holy Trinity" from which the upcoming bar and craft brewery on North Fifth Street takes its name.

"That faith piece has really come in to help us make this jump" into brewpub ownership, Tim McFeely, a former nurse, said.

The couple secured the space in January of 2020, and initially planned to open in April 2020 opening (the building on North Fifth Street was built in 1920, and they wanted the opening to coincide with its 100th anniversary), but faced delays thanks to the coronavirus outbreak in the spring of last year.

"For the last year, year and a half it's been 'next month' every month," Joann McFeely said. But ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev’s first large brewery and malting facility become carbon neutral
Ambev’s first large brewery and first malting facility have become carbon neutral: with four more breweries set to follow by the end of the year, BeverageDaily.com reported on October 7.

Over the past five years, AB InBev’s Brazil arm Ambev has invested around $25 mln in sustainable operations.

Located in the South region of Brazil, the brewery and malting site reduced 90% of their CO2 emissions and have offset the remaining 10%. This has reduced 9,700 tons of CO2 annually since 2018: equivalent to taking 1,300 cars off the road.

By the end of 2021, another four Ambev breweries are due to become carbon neutral.

Since 2003, Ambev has reduced more than 63% of its emissions across its direct operations; as well as investing in initiatives to reduce emissions across the value chain.

“Our path to carbon neutrality requires bringing our partners and suppliers along in the journey. We continue to advance our commitment to go beyond our own operations to make a positive and lasting impact in our communities,” says Rodrigo Figueiredo, Vice President of Sustainability and Procurement at Ambev.

“This important step supports our efforts to achieve our ambitious 2025 Sustainability Goals, which aim to drive progress across our full, ...More info on site

Barley news France: 9% of anticipated winter barley area sown to-date
French farmers made little progress harvesting maize last week as this year's crop continued to lag the usual pace, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on October 8.

An estimated 7% of the grain maize crop area had been harvested by Oct. 4, up only slightly from 2% a week earlier and well below 47% progress a year ago, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.

Growth of maize crops has been curbed this year by cool spells in spring and summer, while heavy rain since late September has held up early harvest work.

For the 50% moisture stage that precedes maize harvesting, crops were running 10 days behind the average pace of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said.

In its first estimates of winter cereal sowing for next year's harvest, the office said 4% of the expected soft wheat area had been drilled by Oct. 4, compared with 1% a week earlier and year-earlier progress of 5%.

For winter barley, 9% of the anticipated area had been sown, against 2% the prior week and 5% a year earlier.

After stormy weather brought heavy rain last weekend, a sunny spell this week is expected to allow farmers to step up field work.

Brewery news UK: Heineken de-listing all PET bottles from its on-trade supply chain
Heineken UK has announced that it is de-listing all PET bottles from its on-trade supply chain as the company looks to cut its carbon footprint, the Scottish Licensed Trade News reported on October 7.

The brewer said that the move will save six million beer and cider bottles – or 170 tonnes of plastic – every year.

It is one of several moves Heineken is making to become a more sustainable business. Other steps include providing more environmentally-friendly cups for on-trade operators, festivals and stadia as an alternative to single-use vessels.

The initiatives are part of Heineken’s Brew a Better World strategy, a ten-year programme to improve the company’s environmental practices.

A statement from the brewer said: “78 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated per year globally and by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Consumers, particularly Gen Z, are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, with 79% changing their purchasing habits based on sustainability.

“It’s therefore now more important than ever for businesses to effect positive change for the planet and provide customers with opportunities to ‘do the right thing’.”

Brewery news Australia: Carlton & United Breweries hires boss of PepsiCo soft drinks and snack foods operations as CEO
The boss of the PepsiCo soft drinks and snack foods operations in Australasia has been hired to run Australia’s biggest beer business, Carlton & United Breweries, which makes Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Crown Lager, The Australian Financial Review reported on October 7.

CUB is owned by Japanese conglomerate Asahi after a $16 billion buyout last year and has appointed Danny Celoni to the top job. He will start in February next year and replaces Peter Filipovic, who is bowing out after 25 years with CUB.

Mr Filipovic announced his resignation in July after two-and-a-half years running CUB.

PepsiCo sells brands such as PepsiMax and Gatorade, and snack food brands including Smith’s potato chips and Red Rock Deli.

Asahi Beverages Oceania chief executive Robert Iervasi said Mr Celoni had “built a formidable reputation across the beverages industry in Australia and Asia over 25 years”.

He had proven ability to successfully run large and complex businesses, across alcohol and non-alcohol, Mr Iervasi said.

Asahi Beverages has been expanding beyond beer and earlier this year acquired the Allpress coffee business, which operates in New Zealand and Australia.

CUB has been active in the past few years acquiring craft beer brands to deliver growth as mainstream beer brands struggled to ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: 2021/22 barley shipments to-date total 3.91 mln tonnes

Barley news Australia & Ethiopia: Ethiopia seen as another potential export market for Australian malting barley
The Australian barley industry has set its sights on Ethiopia as another potential export market for premium Australian malting barley, the Mirage News reported on October 8.

The Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) will host a webinar for the Ethiopian malting and brewing industries, in collaboration with Barley Australia, Grain Trade Australia (GTA) and the Grains Industry Market Access Forum (GIMAF).

The webinar will provide prospective barley buyers with information about the quality and value of Australian malting barley, and practical advice on how to optimise value for the Ethiopian beer industry.

AEGIC Barley Markets Manager Mary Raynes said Australian malting barley should be an attractive option in Ethiopia.

“There is good potential for growth in demand for beer in Ethiopia, and Australian malting barley is well placed to enter this market,” she said.

“Australian barley has an excellent reputation globally thanks to a very strong breeding program and the robust accreditation program.

“There will be a healthy volume of malting barley available for export this season and we’re expecting some strong interest from Ethiopia.”

The webinar will feature Dr Megan Sheehy, Executive Chair of Barley Australia, Pat O’Shannassy, GTA CEO, and Tony Russell, GIMAF Executive Manager.
