Australia: Zero- and low-alcohol segment up more than fivefold in the past year
|
The zero-alcohol and low-alcohol segment has grown more than fivefold in Australia in the past year, says the managing director of Endeavour Group, which operates 251 Dan Murphy’s liquor superstores and 1392 stores under the BWS banner, The Financial Review reported on October 12.
Endeavour Group is Australia’s largest liquor retailer and was de-merged from supermarket giant Woolworths, listing in its own right on the ASX in late June.
Steve Donohue runs the company, which also operates the ALH hotel division with more than 290 hotels and 12,000 poker machines.
The move to low-alcohol consumption comes as Endeavour faces a tougher time from fund managers barred from investing in the stock because of environmental, social and governance concerns.
Mr Donohue said there had been a big shift in customer preferences in the past year to moderation in alcohol consumption. Zero-alcohol and low-alcohol beer, wine and spirits were on the rise.
“We have seen a really rapid increase in the past 12 months,” Mr Donohue said.
Endeavour is in the early stages of a reconfiguration trial of a small number of its stores to put the displays of zero alcohol, low alcohol and mid-strength products more prominently in stores to catch the eye of customers when they

Canada: This year’s drought-affected barley crop could mean higher beer prices
|
When Spencer Hilton stands in one of the fields on his farm in southern Alberta this time of year, the remains of his harvested barley crop usually reach his knees, CBC.ca reported on October 10.
But this summer, the 61-year-old farmer jokes that he could have named each of the plants on his property near Strathmore, Alta., about 55 kilometres east of Calgary, because of the severe drought that scorched most of Canada's West. And that could be bad news for beer drinkers.
"You can see that the crop is very sparse," he told Cost of Living senior producer Jennifer Keene. "This is what happens when the crop gets so stressed, as it was during that massive heat dome."
Like canola, barley is a cool weather crop that benefits from the prairie's high elevation, with cool evenings and summer temperatures that rarely top 30 C. This summer the area had numerous days hotter than that, and some over 35 C, he said.
That was devastating for Hilton's barley crop, which he expects to be about a quarter of its normal volume.
"What we're hearing from the barley organizations and the barley farmers themselves is that this is ultimately going to affect the supply of

France: Farm office lowers forecast of soft wheat, barley ending stocks
|
Farm office FranceAgriMer on October 13 lowered its forecast of French soft wheat stocks by the end of the 2021/22 season due to a cut in the crop estimate, but kept its forecast of exports outside the European Union unchanged, Reuters reported.
Soft wheat stocks at the end of next June in France, the European Union's largest grain producer and exporter, were expected at 2.4 million tonnes, down from 2.9 million projected last month, FranceAgriMer said.
French soft wheat exports outside the European Union in the 2021/22 season were still expected at 9.6 million tonnes, up nearly 30% on last season.
France harvested a poor crop last year that significantly cut its 2020/21 export availabilities.
Non-EU exports in 2021/22 were, however, running behind 2019/2020 and 2018/2019 three months into the season, but could pick up in the second half, notably to Egypt, if Russia were to curb exports, Marc Zribi, head of FranceAgriMer's crop unit, told reporters.
FranceAgriMer incorporated in its supply and demand outlook the latest soft wheat production estimate from the farm ministry, which on Tuesday cuts its view to 35.2 million tonnes from 36.1 million last month. The crop was still 21% above last season's poor harvest.
In other grains, the office cuts

Australia: Barley exports up 16% in August
|
Australia exported 659,191 tonnes of barley in August, up 16 per cent from 570,200 tonnes shipped in July, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Malting exports in August totalled 70,326 tonnes, with Mexico on 33,740 tonnes and Peru with 23,000 tonnes the biggest markets, followed by Ecuador on 7000t.
Japan is continuing its run of recent months as Australia’s highest-volume destination for feed barley, with 167,113t in August out of the monthly total of 588,865 tonnes.
Saudi Arabia on 142,117 tonnes followed by Vietnam 84,240 tonnes were the second and third-biggest markets respectively for feed.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said the rebound in August volumes happened as expected, including the anticipated uptick in Saudi feed barley shipments and the return of Iran as a destination.
Malting exports were again strong, with Mexico, Peru and Ecuador pointing to continued demand in South and Central America.
“We expect malt demand to continue to strengthen into the new-crop timeframe and note local malt bids and spreads are creeping higher.
Sep, Oct and First Half Nov Barley volumes should grind lower, as we tighten to historically tight carry out stocks and the market waits for new crop.
Looking at forward demand, Mr Roache
