Barley news Canada: This year’s drought-affected barley crop could mean higher beer prices
When Spencer Hilton stands in one of the fields on his farm in southern Alberta this time of year, the remains of his harvested barley crop usually reach his knees, CBC.ca reported on October 10.

But this summer, the 61-year-old farmer jokes that he could have named each of the plants on his property near Strathmore, Alta., about 55 kilometres east of Calgary, because of the severe drought that scorched most of Canada's West. And that could be bad news for beer drinkers.

"You can see that the crop is very sparse," he told Cost of Living senior producer Jennifer Keene. "This is what happens when the crop gets so stressed, as it was during that massive heat dome."

Like canola, barley is a cool weather crop that benefits from the prairie's high elevation, with cool evenings and summer temperatures that rarely top 30 C. This summer the area had numerous days hotter than that, and some over 35 C, he said.

That was devastating for Hilton's barley crop, which he expects to be about a quarter of its normal volume.

"What we're hearing from the barley organizations and the barley farmers themselves is that this is ultimately going to affect the supply of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Giant's Head Brewing opens up its doors in Summerland
A new brewery has opened up its doors in Summerland and hopes to make its mark in a community they feel is already well known for ciders and wine, Castanet.net reported on October 9.

Giant's Head Brewing officially welcomed in diners and drinkers on October 7, after revamping the spot that used to house Breakaway Brewing Co, which closed their doors in August.

"My father-in-law and I have always loved beer and always wanted to get into brewing. We finally got the chance to do so and we jumped right in with both feet,” Erik Hansen, the GM for the new brewery explained.

“Summerland has always been a nice community that we've enjoyed coming to for a long time and it was definitely a spot because it was a brewery before, we definitely wanted to come in and get to not start from the beginning but we had a little help already done.”

The name was chosen from the popular local mountain.

“We hope that we bring the brewery culture to Summerland and we hope that we're just another one to stop at,” Hansen added, referencing the eight breweries close-by down south in Penticton.

“[Summerland] has really done well with cider and fruit. So I think ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Brewer known for co-creating the Black is Beautiful initiative to open a production facility in Charlotte
Marcus Baskerville, the San Antonio brewer known for co-creating the Black is Beautiful initiative that swept the country last year, will in 2022 open a brewery and incubator in Charlotte, North Carolina, news site Axios Charlotte reports.

The Harriet Baskerville Incubation program — the creation of which Baskerville hinted at in when he spoke to the Current last month — aims to give traditionally underrepresented people a start along the road to a career in craft brewing.

The incubation program is an homage to Baskerville’s grandmother, who used to brew during prohibition, Axios Charlotte reports. Harriet stopped brewing because someone fell off her roof and she didn’t want to go to jail. Baskerville didn’t learn this story until he started brewing a few years ago. “I’m glad to pick up where she left off,” he told the news site.

The incubation program will be 100% based in Charlotte’s South End, and will give BIPOC and women access to equipment and information about beer that they normally wouldn’t have access to, Baskerville said.

Co-founders Baskerville and Mike Holt opened Weathered Souls here in the Alamo City in 2016. It quickly grew in popularity and has since earned several accolades, including “The Best Craft Brewery in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Spacecat Brewing holds its grand opening in Norwalk
There’s a new microbrewery in Norwalk. Spacecat Brewing, which had its grand opening on Friday, October 8, is now serving craft beer made in-house at its Chestnut St. location, by owner James Bloom, operations manager Jeff Dunn and head brewer Roger Krackow, formerly of Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, CTExaminer reported on October 11.

High vaulted ceilings and many-windowed walls – all throwbacks to when the space was the main factory of the J. & J. mill – punctuate the newly-renovated space. Brewing tanks and kettles visually star, set up behind the bar where visitors can watch staff work their magic while they sip on flights or eat snacks purchased from a food truck on the Edison-bulbed back patio.

“I want people to make their way down Chestnut Street, which doesn’t happen all that often,” Bloom said from behind the bar before opening on October 10, “and sit with one of our beers and experience everything that is South Norwalk.”

Bloom explained, “You can’t have South Norwalk without industrial revival.”

Spacecat started as an idea dreamed up by Bloom and Dunn when they were working at an insurance company in Darien and starting to feel the ‘get me out of this desk chair’ ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Bell Tower Brewing Co. set to open in downtown Kent by the end of October
If all goes according to plan, it should be only a few weeks until beer lovers have another destination to visit in downtown Kent, the Record-Courier reported on October 12.

Bell Tower Brewing Co., located at 310 Park Avenue in Kent, is set to open sometime near the end of October, according to part-owner and General Manager Ryan Tipton.

“We’ve been working toward this for four to five years now,” he said. “We looked all over downtown Kent in that span of time, and nothing really felt right.”

The brewery has been undergoing a series of soft-opening, invite-only events recently to see what people like and gauge their reactions, he explained. The establishment was buzzing with activity as couples and groups sampled beers and food on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Kent.

“We’re anticipating a big rush, which is exciting, but we want to give everyone a great experience,” he said.

Michelle Hartman, Kent Area Chamber of Commerce interim executive director, said she’s excited about what the opening likely means for the community, the beginning of the expansion of the downtown area.

“This gives people more of a reason to come downtown because we have another place to go,” she said, adding the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Leland brewery finally breaks ground after two-year delay
A Leland Brewery has finally broken ground after a two year delay, WWayTV3.com reported on October 8.

Co-owners Will Cameron and Jud Watkins said work should be complete before Labor Day of next year.

The two began work after noticing customers in New Hanover County saying they were driving from Brunswick for a craft brew. Watkins and Cameron hope after months of shutdowns, the new location will fill a need for the community.

“We wanted to make something that was specific to Brunswick County,” said Cameron. “That had the heart of Brunswick County. So through all of our planning although we do want to take a lot of what’s made it successful… we also know Brunswick County well, and we want to make it specific to Brunswick county so that they feel like that’s their bar.”

Watkins said they has to hold off for months to break ground because of the pandemic.

Brewery news USA, FL: Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach to close down for good
Friday, October 8, Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach announced they will be ceasing operations on Dec. 19, 2021. The taproom and brewery said they will continue to supply their current distributors until later this year, WPTV reported.

The brewery said COVID-19 pandemic and lease renewals are to blame, “Obviously this is a very difficult decision,” states Mike Halker, president and founder. “The impact [COVID-19] has had on our industry over the last 18+ months, and continues to have, is devastating. That combined with our building lease coming up for renewal has made this the right decision for us at this time."

The company is selling its intellectual property rights including recipes, if there is no buyer they will be put up for auction.

Brewery news USA, CA: Shmaltz Brewing Company to cease production after 25 years
America’s “Jewish beer” company is to cease production after 25 years’ inebriating wedding and barmitzvah guests, Jewish News reported on October 11.

The owners of He’Brew beer, which launched in San Francisco in 1996, named their final ale ‘Exodus 2021’, aptly brewed with date, pomegranate, fig and grapes.

“This is a great time to put a bow on it and have our grand finale,” said founder Jeremy Cowan, who cited long travel times to drum up sales as a reason for closing. “Especially coming out of Covid, when we couldn’t do that, the prospect of being a door-to-door salesman is a lot less compelling, and I feel I’ve accomplished more than I ever imagined possible.”

Cowan’s Shmaltz Brewing Company started when a group of friends were sat around making puns while drinking beer, leading to names such as ‘He-Brew’ beer, ‘Genesis Ale’ and ‘Messiah Bold’.

Barley news France: Farm office lowers forecast of soft wheat, barley ending stocks
Farm office FranceAgriMer on October 13 lowered its forecast of French soft wheat stocks by the end of the 2021/22 season due to a cut in the crop estimate, but kept its forecast of exports outside the European Union unchanged, Reuters reported.

Soft wheat stocks at the end of next June in France, the European Union's largest grain producer and exporter, were expected at 2.4 million tonnes, down from 2.9 million projected last month, FranceAgriMer said.

French soft wheat exports outside the European Union in the 2021/22 season were still expected at 9.6 million tonnes, up nearly 30% on last season.

France harvested a poor crop last year that significantly cut its 2020/21 export availabilities.

Non-EU exports in 2021/22 were, however, running behind 2019/2020 and 2018/2019 three months into the season, but could pick up in the second half, notably to Egypt, if Russia were to curb exports, Marc Zribi, head of FranceAgriMer's crop unit, told reporters.

FranceAgriMer incorporated in its supply and demand outlook the latest soft wheat production estimate from the farm ministry, which on Tuesday cuts its view to 35.2 million tonnes from 36.1 million last month. The crop was still 21% above last season's poor harvest.

In other grains, the office cuts ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley exports up 16% in August
Australia exported 659,191 tonnes of barley in August, up 16 per cent from 570,200 tonnes shipped in July, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Malting exports in August totalled 70,326 tonnes, with Mexico on 33,740 tonnes and Peru with 23,000 tonnes the biggest markets, followed by Ecuador on 7000t.

Japan is continuing its run of recent months as Australia’s highest-volume destination for feed barley, with 167,113t in August out of the monthly total of 588,865 tonnes.

Saudi Arabia on 142,117 tonnes followed by Vietnam 84,240 tonnes were the second and third-biggest markets respectively for feed.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said the rebound in August volumes happened as expected, including the anticipated uptick in Saudi feed barley shipments and the return of Iran as a destination.

Malting exports were again strong, with Mexico, Peru and Ecuador pointing to continued demand in South and Central America.

“We expect malt demand to continue to strengthen into the new-crop timeframe and note local malt bids and spreads are creeping higher.

Sep, Oct and First Half Nov Barley volumes should grind lower, as we tighten to historically tight carry out stocks and the market waits for new crop.

Looking at forward demand, Mr Roache ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Zero- and low-alcohol segment up more than fivefold in the past year
The zero-alcohol and low-alcohol segment has grown more than fivefold in Australia in the past year, says the managing director of Endeavour Group, which operates 251 Dan Murphy’s liquor superstores and 1392 stores under the BWS banner, The Financial Review reported on October 12.

Endeavour Group is Australia’s largest liquor retailer and was de-merged from supermarket giant Woolworths, listing in its own right on the ASX in late June.

Steve Donohue runs the company, which also operates the ALH hotel division with more than 290 hotels and 12,000 poker machines.

The move to low-alcohol consumption comes as Endeavour faces a tougher time from fund managers barred from investing in the stock because of environmental, social and governance concerns.

Mr Donohue said there had been a big shift in customer preferences in the past year to moderation in alcohol consumption. Zero-alcohol and low-alcohol beer, wine and spirits were on the rise.

“We have seen a really rapid increase in the past 12 months,” Mr Donohue said.

Endeavour is in the early stages of a reconfiguration trial of a small number of its stores to put the displays of zero alcohol, low alcohol and mid-strength products more prominently in stores to catch the eye of customers when they ...More info on site
