South Korea: Korean consumers turn toward diverse and unique craft beers
|
Beer has long been a key ingredient of mixed drinks in South Korea, but changing appetites and the extended coronavirus pandemic have turned consumers toward diverse and unique flavors of craft beer, the Korea Bizwire reported on October 15.
Craft beer sales are on the rise, as a growing number of people work from home due to social distancing, and those people increasingly prefer more diverse and tasty beers to existing mass-marketed lagers and ales.
“Before the pandemic, I used to go to bars to have beer with my clients or friends after work. I recently found craft beer tasty and came to enjoy a diverse range of craft beer at my place,” Uni Park, a 32-year-old exhibition planner in Seoul, said.
During the past 1 1/2 years, some young people aged between 24-35 years have created a culture of enjoying craft beer purchased at convenience stores while watching Netflix movies and series at their homes, Kim Jin-man, a general manager at the Korea Craft Brewers Association (KCBA), said.
“Imported beer brands became popular in 2015 and 2016, as they provided ale and other diverse beer products. But in recent years, people preferred freshly brewed and even diverse local craft beer to imported beer,

USA: Craft beer industry predominantly run by white men, survey shows
|
The US craft beer industry is predominantly run by white men, according to new owner demographic benchmarking data.
The findings, based on a survey of 500 randomly selected breweries selected by the Brewers Association (BA), showed that brewery owners in the US are 93.5% white, with 92.2% of breweries having entirely white ownership. Additionally, only 23.7% of brewery owners were female, while 75.6% were male and just 0.2% were non-binary/third gender.
“The American beverage alcohol consumer is increasingly BIPOC and female. That shift is ongoing and will likely continue going forward. For example, female drinkers under 25 now outnumber male drinkers under 25. So for craft to continue growing and moving more in the larger beer and beverage alcohol consumer market, it will need to connect better with that diverse customer base,” said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association.
“While there’s nothing that says white and male owned businesses can’t connect with that more diverse customer base, it’s going to require additional work in building diverse organisations and shoring up blind spots,” said Watson.
“The BA is working to build those resources,” he added, but insisted: “Our industry has to see the value and want to use them. These results should underline

UK: Shoppers could face soaring prices for food and beer this Christmas
|
UK’s shoppers could face soaring prices for food and beer this Christmas despite the government’s deal to ensure essential supplies of CO2 continue, The Mirror reported on October 12.
CF Fertilisers, Britain’s main carbon dioxide producer, was forced to close down two of its UK plants - Cheshire and Billingham - last month following the rising price of gas.
The shortage had a major impact on numerous industries because CO2 is needed to stun animals for slaughter, produce fizzy drinks, extend the shelf life of food, help surgical operations and cool nuclear power plants.
In September, the government agreed to spend millions of pounds on bailing out CF Fertilisers – a private US firm – so that it could restart production at the Teesside factory.
Ministers have now brokered a longer-term deal, lasting until January, which will allow the plant to charge significantly more for CO2 in the coming months to ensure production remains viable.
It is unclear how much more companies will have to pay but food producers could face a possible fivefold spike in the cost of CO2 that could ultimately impact food prices.
It comes as retail industry experts warned that shoppers could face “disruption and frustration” over the festive period amid empty

France: French barley exports down sharply in September from August
|
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union dropped in September following a strong August, Refinitiv data showed.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the 27-country bloc totalled 695,400 tonnes in September, the third month of the 2021/22 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.
China was the largest non-EU destination for French soft wheat last month, with an initial estimate of 185,200 tonnes, followed closely by Algeria with 184,000 tonnes.
Wheat exports to China are set to accelerate further in October, scheduled loadings suggest.
Algeria had led French wheat shipments in August, partly due to a backlog from July when loadings were delayed by a rain-disrupted French harvest.
French barley exports outside the EU reached 372,600 tonnes last month, down sharply from the 909,900 recorded in August, with China again dominating flows.
The September shipments included 225,500 tonnes of feed barley and 105,300 tonnes of malting barley for China. Another 5,800 tonnes of feed barley was sent to Morocco and 36,000 tonnes of malting barley shipped to three other destinations.
French soft wheat exports outside the EU over the full July-June 2021/22 season are expected to be 2 million tonnes higher than last season at 9.6 million tonnes, according to farming agency FranceAgriMer.

UK: Malting barley shortage in the world could boost Norfolk growers
|
Global shortages of beer-making malting barley could boost Norfolk growers who produced some of the best crops in the world this year, the Eastern Daily Press reported on October 13, citing one of UK’s leading maltsters.
A catastrophic failure of the Canadian crop and supply shortages in Europe - aggravated by drought in the Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden - had left the world short of malting barley, said Bob King, commercial director of Great Ryburgh-based Crisp Malting Group.
But he told Holt and District Farmers’ Club that the home-grown crop had been the best in the world, for both yield and quality.
As a result, prices for malting barley were likely to be over £200 per tonne for the next harvest in 2022, he suggested.
In addition, the surging price of fertiliser might encourage growers to plant more spring barley rather than second wheats.
After Canada’s crop was hit by record temperatures in July, it left the United States short of malting barley. Now, the industry was hoping that southern hemisphere crops in Australia and Argentina could help bridge the global shortfall.
Mr King said he hoped that the county’s biggest maltster could avoid production disruptions amid the current energy crisis, particularly as it is
