Brewery news USA, FL: Florida’s beer industry ranks fifth as one of top contributors to U.S. economy
Craft breweries faced a challenging year in 2020, but, as a whole, the craft beer industry contributed $62.1 billion to the U.S. economy in 2020. It also provided more than 400,000 jobs during a time when the pandemic forced businesses to temporarily close their doors.

Among all states, Florida ranked fifth as one of the top contributors to the U.S. economy – based on craft beer alone. The Sunshine State provided $3.1 billion.

California: $7.6 billion Pennsylvania: $5 billion Texas: $4.2 billion New York: $3.3. billion Florida: $3.1 billion

In addition, the total number of full-time employees in Florida’s industry was about 21,241 with a labor income of $952,979,027. The average wage was $41,188 in 2020.

The BA said the numbers were tallied based on the beer produced by craft breweries as well as non-beer products, like food and merchandise sold in brewpubs and taprooms. The economists looked at craft breweries, craft beer wholesalers and retailers that sell craft beer.

"With a strong presence across the 50 states and the District of Columbia, even in a challenging year craft breweries are a powerful economic force at the local, state, and national level," Bart Watson, the BA’s chief economist, said in a statement. "As consumers continue to demand a ...More info on site

Hops news USA, WA: Hop growers balance demands of craft beers with climate concerns
With the rise of craft breweries in the mid-2000s, Washington hop growers went from anonymous commodity suppliers for multinational beer makers to collaborators with primarily small, independent operators that used hops to shape the flavor of their beverages, the Crosscut reported on October 13.

Every September, breweries from across the world visit the Yakima Valley to tour hop yards and processing plants and negotiate their hop supply years in advance. After a day of business, brewers and hop industry officials often continue the conversation over a pint of beer at a Yakima pub or restaurant.

“They want to know what’s going into their beer. They want to know how it’s produced. They actually want to be part of the growing process,” said Jeff Perrault, vice president of resources and compliance at Perrault Farms in Toppenish in Yakima County.

Being in tune with the hop production process has helped brewers create high-quality beers.

Now breweries want that collaboration to extend into addressing climate change.

The hop industry is feeling the push to address these issues to satisfy brewery customers. However, those in the industry also recognize the need to protect their businesses from the effects of climate change, including extreme heat, drought and wildfires.

Brewery news Canada, BC: BC’s South Okanagan brewery reopens under new name and ownership
A brewery in BC’s South Okanagan that closed in August after two years of business has reopened under a new name and new ownership, the Canadian Beer News reported on October 13.

Giant’s Head Brewing opened its doors last week in a storefront in downtown Summerland that was previously home to Breakaway Brewing.

Launched by Erik Hansen and his family, the brewery launched with an initial beer line-up that includes Razzle Dazzle Raspberry Cream Ale (5% abv), Patrick Hazy IPA (5.4% abv), Classic Pilsner (5.1% abv), Legendary Stout (5.8% abv), Passion Fruit Sour Ale (4.7% abv), and Dark Fantasy Pale Ale (5.6% abv), all available by the glass, samples, and in growlers to go.

The tasting room menu also offers several cocktail, wine, and cider options, and an extensive food menu that includes pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, fish & chips, and more.

Giant’s Head Brewing is located at 13224 Victoria Road North and is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily.

Brewery news USA: Craft beer industry predominantly run by white men, survey shows
The US craft beer industry is predominantly run by white men, according to new owner demographic benchmarking data.

The findings, based on a survey of 500 randomly selected breweries selected by the Brewers Association (BA), showed that brewery owners in the US are 93.5% white, with 92.2% of breweries having entirely white ownership. Additionally, only 23.7% of brewery owners were female, while 75.6% were male and just 0.2% were non-binary/third gender.

“The American beverage alcohol consumer is increasingly BIPOC and female. That shift is ongoing and will likely continue going forward. For example, female drinkers under 25 now outnumber male drinkers under 25. So for craft to continue growing and moving more in the larger beer and beverage alcohol consumer market, it will need to connect better with that diverse customer base,” said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association.

“While there’s nothing that says white and male owned businesses can’t connect with that more diverse customer base, it’s going to require additional work in building diverse organisations and shoring up blind spots,” said Watson.

“The BA is working to build those resources,” he added, but insisted: “Our industry has to see the value and want to use them. These results should underline ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Connor Brewing LLC proposes new brewery near Longwood
Longwood-based Connor Brewing LLC, which does business as Little Wekiva Brewery, has proposed a 1,200-square-foot location in the Springs Plaza shopping center at 145 Wekiva Springs Road near Longwood, WFTV reported on October 14.

The brewery would feature a two-barrel brewing system, which would produce four to eight barrels a week.

The project will go before the Seminole County development review committee on Oct. 13, seeking a special exemption on the site to allow the brewery to open there. Brewery ownership in its application wrote they wanted to open there because there is not another brewery within five miles of the space.

Brewery news USA, NY: Springs Brewery seeking to convert auto repair shop in East Hampton into a brewery
The owners of a new locally made beer business are seeking to convert a longtime auto repair shop in Springs, East Hampton, NY into a brewery and taproom with outdoor seating, the East Hampton Star reported on October 14.

Lindsay Reichart, a Springs native, and Gunnar Burke, the owners of Springs Brewery, which debuted its first cans of beer in August at the Springs General Store, want to change the use of a 2,680-square-foot one-story building that is home to Hampton Auto Collision on Springs-Fireplace Road, next door to Springs Pizza. Ms. Reichart’s father, Randy Reichart, owns the existing business. They are proposing to renovate the structure to create a brewery, a taproom with 20 seats, a 520-square-foot outdoor patio with four picnic tables, a cold storage room, and a pallet storage area. They also want to increase the number of parking spaces from eight to 19, 12 of which would be on two neighboring parcels used by Springs Pizza.

During a preliminary site plan review by the East Hampton Town Planning Board on Oct. 6, Ms. Reichart said the hamlet would be the ideal place for the proposed brewery and taproom because it is “a place of craft and art, but ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Waller St. Brewing to permanently close its doors on October 15
A prohibition-themed brewery and taproom that has been operating for just over six years in Ottawa has announced that it will be permanently closing its doors at the end of the business on Friday, October 15th, the Canadian Beer News reported.

Waller St. Brewing opened in the summer of 2015 in the basement at 14 Waller Street in Ottawa, below what was then the Lunenburg Pub, and is now Level One Game Pub.

The following statement regarding the closure was posted on the brewery website and social media:

“The team here at Waller St Brewing are very proud of what we have done in the time we have been open. We have always done our best to be innovative and creative with our brews. From sours, to house yeast, to raw ales and more, we have tried to challenge ourselves and our tiny brewery to do the very best.

“Over the years we have worked to be a place where people come to gather with friends and celebrate community. We wanted everyone coming through our doors to feel welcomed, at home and accepted in our space. We have raised thousands to support numerous charities and groups to help make a difference in our city.

Brewery news South Korea: Korean consumers turn toward diverse and unique craft beers
Beer has long been a key ingredient of mixed drinks in South Korea, but changing appetites and the extended coronavirus pandemic have turned consumers toward diverse and unique flavors of craft beer, the Korea Bizwire reported on October 15.

Craft beer sales are on the rise, as a growing number of people work from home due to social distancing, and those people increasingly prefer more diverse and tasty beers to existing mass-marketed lagers and ales.

“Before the pandemic, I used to go to bars to have beer with my clients or friends after work. I recently found craft beer tasty and came to enjoy a diverse range of craft beer at my place,” Uni Park, a 32-year-old exhibition planner in Seoul, said.

During the past 1 1/2 years, some young people aged between 24-35 years have created a culture of enjoying craft beer purchased at convenience stores while watching Netflix movies and series at their homes, Kim Jin-man, a general manager at the Korea Craft Brewers Association (KCBA), said.

“Imported beer brands became popular in 2015 and 2016, as they provided ale and other diverse beer products. But in recent years, people preferred freshly brewed and even diverse local craft beer to imported beer, ...More info on site

Barley news France: French barley exports down sharply in September from August
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union dropped in September following a strong August, Refinitiv data showed.

Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the 27-country bloc totalled 695,400 tonnes in September, the third month of the 2021/22 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.

China was the largest non-EU destination for French soft wheat last month, with an initial estimate of 185,200 tonnes, followed closely by Algeria with 184,000 tonnes.

Wheat exports to China are set to accelerate further in October, scheduled loadings suggest.

Algeria had led French wheat shipments in August, partly due to a backlog from July when loadings were delayed by a rain-disrupted French harvest.

French barley exports outside the EU reached 372,600 tonnes last month, down sharply from the 909,900 recorded in August, with China again dominating flows.

The September shipments included 225,500 tonnes of feed barley and 105,300 tonnes of malting barley for China. Another 5,800 tonnes of feed barley was sent to Morocco and 36,000 tonnes of malting barley shipped to three other destinations.

French soft wheat exports outside the EU over the full July-June 2021/22 season are expected to be 2 million tonnes higher than last season at 9.6 million tonnes, according to farming agency FranceAgriMer.

Barley news UK: Malting barley shortage in the world could boost Norfolk growers
Global shortages of beer-making malting barley could boost Norfolk growers who produced some of the best crops in the world this year, the Eastern Daily Press reported on October 13, citing one of UK’s leading maltsters.

A catastrophic failure of the Canadian crop and supply shortages in Europe - aggravated by drought in the Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden - had left the world short of malting barley, said Bob King, commercial director of Great Ryburgh-based Crisp Malting Group.

But he told Holt and District Farmers’ Club that the home-grown crop had been the best in the world, for both yield and quality.

As a result, prices for malting barley were likely to be over £200 per tonne for the next harvest in 2022, he suggested.

In addition, the surging price of fertiliser might encourage growers to plant more spring barley rather than second wheats.

After Canada’s crop was hit by record temperatures in July, it left the United States short of malting barley. Now, the industry was hoping that southern hemisphere crops in Australia and Argentina could help bridge the global shortfall.

Mr King said he hoped that the county’s biggest maltster could avoid production disruptions amid the current energy crisis, particularly as it is ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Shoppers could face soaring prices for food and beer this Christmas
UK’s shoppers could face soaring prices for food and beer this Christmas despite the government’s deal to ensure essential supplies of CO2 continue, The Mirror reported on October 12.

CF Fertilisers, Britain’s main carbon dioxide producer, was forced to close down two of its UK plants - Cheshire and Billingham - last month following the rising price of gas.

The shortage had a major impact on numerous industries because CO2 is needed to stun animals for slaughter, produce fizzy drinks, extend the shelf life of food, help surgical operations and cool nuclear power plants.

In September, the government agreed to spend millions of pounds on bailing out CF Fertilisers – a private US firm – so that it could restart production at the Teesside factory.

Ministers have now brokered a longer-term deal, lasting until January, which will allow the plant to charge significantly more for CO2 in the coming months to ensure production remains viable.

It is unclear how much more companies will have to pay but food producers could face a possible fivefold spike in the cost of CO2 that could ultimately impact food prices.

It comes as retail industry experts warned that shoppers could face “disruption and frustration” over the festive period amid empty ...More info on site
