Brewery news USA, WI: Hop Yard Ale Works shooting to open sometime in November
If you’ve frequented Appleton's north side over the past several months, you’ve probably noticed a new development just east of the roundabout at North Richmond Street and West Northland Avenue.

That development — a brewery that also serves wood-fired pizzas — will soon be open for business, The Post-Crescent reported on October 28.

Hop Yard Ale Works is shooting to open sometime in November at 512 W. Northland Ave., owner Amy Behm said.

Behm and her husband Oliver, with whom she co-owns the brewery, are partial to India pale ales, but Hop Yard will serve a variety of beer.

“We are big fans of IPAs. We’ve been homebrewing and that’s kind of what we would always lean towards, so that’s probably where we’re going to start,” Amy said. “But being a brewery, we’ll be offering as many as we can as quickly as possible.”

Amy said that Hop Yard will have “quite a few” taps. Their plan is to start with a couple of their own brews, but also bring in numerous guest taps until Hop Yard introduces more of its own brews down the line.

“We’d love to support the other local breweries here in town,” Amy said. “If they’re willing to allow us to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Amorphic Beer planning to launch in Milwaukee towards end of November
Amorphic Beer, a new brewery and taproom in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, is planning to open toward the end of November, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on October 28.

But this brewery does things a little differently — or as co-owner Ron Hockersmith puts it, "backwards." Heck, the crew doesn't even concern itself with fitting its brews into specific styles.

When developing a beer, Hockersmith — who has been into home brewing for about 20 years — said he first thinks about how he wants it to look, smell and taste.

Then, he said, his team uses math, physics and chemistry to select ingredients, calculate how much they need of each and determine what process to use in order to achieve their end goal.

Math and science are strong suits of Hockersmith and the brewery's other owners, Alan Willhite and Joe Broeckert. They all have engineering backgrounds and met working at GE Healthcare.

Willhite said for years, the three joked about someday opening their own brewery.

A year and a half ago, Hockersmith said he retired early from Leonardo DRS, which makes electric propulsion systems, power distribution systems and more for the U.S. Navy and allies. He ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Dented Keg Brewing Company to open its second location in downtown Clearfield
Something is brewing in Clearfield County and craft beer enthusiasts are about to have another option to experience along the riverfront in Downtown Clearfield, GantNews.com reported on October 27.

Clearly Ahead Development is excited to announce Dented Keg Brewing Company will open their second location at the new Rivers Landing building along the Riverwalk in downtown Clearfield.

Dented Keg Brewing Company, known as “DKBC”, set out with a simple mission to offer great beer and food in a family friendly environment while being an active member and friend of the community in which they operate. DKBC owners, Matt McCullough, a St. Marys native, and Corey Gibbons, originally from Pittsburgh, announced DKBC will expand into River’s Landing.

The brewery and restaurant will occupy approximately 4,200 square feet of indoor dining and brewing space for their 5-barrel brewing system to complement their 10-barrel system, located in Mars, Pa. The new site boasts over 1,000 square feet for outdoor dining. Additionally, DKBC will exclusively cater special events on the second floor, a 2,200 square foot special event area. The area can accommodate up to 138-person events.

“The site provides a terrific setting for our second location. The panoramic views of the Susquehanna River and the Riverwalk, proximity ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: The Walking Distance Brewing Co. already open in Marysville
A blue brick standalone building on 8th Street in Marysville that once housed an auto shop now sports a wood-paneled sign on its façade announcing to the world that it’s a brewpub, The Columbus Dispatch reported on October 28.

The Walking Distance Brewing Co. opened earlier this month, offering eight beers crafted in house, and plans to offer more in the future.

The brewpub sits in a residential neighborhood a short stroll from uptown Marysville and a brief walk from some of the vendors who supply ingredients, which inspired the title.

The building has a kitchen and owners Doug Olsen and Teddy Valinski say a food program is in their long-term plans, but they use food trucks for now.

The beer menu includes most of the staples people find in a typical Greater Columbus brewpub. Walking Distance serves two American ales, a wheat beer, two IPAs, a stout, a seltzer and a seasonal pumpkin beer.

“Right now we’re focusing on making sure that we have that solid base,” Valinski said. “Every time I go to a brewery (and order a flight) I want a pretty plain American lager, an IPA, a wheat or a stout, and I always want that experimental beer, like a seasonal ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Wild Barley Kitchen Co. to add brewery and new restaurant
Holland Lawrence and Marc Fogelsong never intended to be known for wood-fired bagels. When the owners of Wild Barley Kitchen Co. started talking about opening a business together more than 10 years ago, they envisioned a brewpub with craft beer, the San Antonio Magazine reported on October 27.

In their new brick-and-mortar location in the former Taco Garage on Broadway, the pair now specializes in both bagels and beer, plus wood-fired pizzas that are baked on the same hand-built oven as the bagels. “We wanted to have the capability to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner—that’s where the sourdough came in,” Fogelsong says. “The beer, bagels and pizza all have a common thread. It’s all tied together through fermentation.”

The friends, who met at Texas A&M University in College Station, admit there was a steep learning curve when they started making pizza and bagels in their food trailer two years ago. “We had never baked mass numbers of bagels, and we were doing it wrong for a while,” Fogelsong says. They’ve since learned the art of wood-fired dough, fermenting it for 48 hours while paying close attention to the oven’s ultra-hot temps. “My experience in the brewing world meant that I understood yeast, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Brewing With Brothas aim at launching the first microbrewery in East Palo Alto
During his birthday camping trip, Denzel Jackson woke up at 5 a.m. and spent the morning fishing with Risean "Bookie" Tinsley. When they returned to shore and stepped off the boat, the craft beer connoisseurs brewed up an idea, the Palo Alto Online reported on October 27.

"We were having a beer, and talking about actually making our own," Jackson said. About a month later, the two purchased a homebrew kit at MoreBeer in Los Altos. They started with extract brewing, then went on to all-grain brewing. Jackson recalls, "It kicked off from there."

With that, the friends co-founded Brewing With Brothas. Their goal is to launch the first microbrewery in their East Palo Alto hometown, where they were born and raised.

"We want a place for our community to come and chill, have a good time and have a quality pint to drink," Tinsley said.

Since their founding almost two years ago, Brewing With Brothas has received local and national recognition.

Out of 18 brews, theirs took first prize at the Taplands homebrew competition out of Santa Clara in December 2020. It was canned and showcased at the taproom. Then, "It just never stopped."

This year, Brewing With Brothas was among the 80 Black-owned breweries ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Stacked Deck Brewing to close for good
Stacked Deck, the brewery that opened in the Treasure Island Center in St. Paul in 2018, has announced it will close for good, Yahoo News reported on October 27.

The brewery announced its closure on social media, saying its last day of service will be Oct. 30.

Here's the announcement, in full:

"Friends, it's with great regret that we share this terrible news: We will be closing our doors for the last time at midnight on October 30th. The saga that landed us in this unfortunate position is long and winding and of soap opera proportions. We'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say, the hardships we have endured over the past year have gone beyond the capabilities of a small brewery like ours.

"But let's not dwell on things beyond our control. We have eight more days to celebrate our nearly three-year beer journey with you, our amazing patrons and our unbelievably awesome staff. You all have truly made this place what it is, and we can't thank you enough for your support. We have a few more fun tricks up our sleeves over the coming week, including a big ol' going away shindig on the 30th, so stay tuned for ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Government announces ‘biggest cut in beer taxes in decades and most radical simplification of alcohol duties’
British finance minister Rishi Sunak announced what he called the biggest cut in taxes on beer in decades and the most radical simplification of alcohol duties in over a century in a boost to pubs as they struggle to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, the London South East reported on October 27.

In his budget statement, Sunak said the current system of alcohol taxes, which dates back to 1643, was outdated and too complicated as he outlined a new principle, which will see some stronger drinks become more expensive.

Sunak told parliament that a planned increase in taxes on spirits, wine, cider, and beer will be cancelled from Thursday, October 28. The freeze in alcohol taxes and the simplification of duties will lower taxes by between 565 million and 775 million pounds a year.

"Our reforms make the alcohol duty system simpler, fairer and healthier," Sunak said.

The cuts will spare voters another hit to their income at a time when inflation is the highest in almost a decade and some people have suffered lower wages as businesses were forced to close last year during the pandemic.

Pubs in Britain have faced some of the strictest restrictions of any industry during the pandemic, including months ...More info on site

Whisky news South Africa: Heineken’s takeover talks with Distell prolonged
Heineken NV’s talks to acquire Distell Group Holdings have been prolonged as the South African drinks maker’s second-largest investor is asking for a higher price, the MoneyWeb reported on October 27 citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The Public Investment Corp., Africa’s biggest money manager, is holding out for about 200 rand a share, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous as the talks are still private. That is about 11% higher than Distell’s closing share price on October 27 and would value the Stellenbosch-based wine and spirits company at R44.6 billion ($3 billion).

Talks are ongoing, they said, and no final decision has been made. Heineken’s tabled bid hasn’t been disclosed.

The PIC referred questions to Distell and Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer. Distell declined to comment on the talks, citing a regulatory statement released in September that said while satisfactory progress had been made, a number of issues still needed to be agreed. Heineken didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The PIC owns a 30% stake in Distell, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The largest shareholder is Remgro Ltd., an investment group of billionaire Johann Rupert, which declined to comment.

Heineken approached the maker of Klipdrift brandy, Nederburg ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Brewers tapping into new growth area of little-to-no alcohol beer and canned cocktails
Japan’s brewers, battered by the drop-off in restaurant and bar sales during Covid-19 restrictions, are tapping into a new growth area: beer and canned cocktails with little-to-no alcohol that are becoming more popular among health-conscious consumers, Bloomberg reported on October 27.

Asahi Group Holding Ltd.’s Beery and Sapporo Holdings Ltd.’s Drafty both contain less than 1% alcohol, compared with 5% or more for mainstream brews. “People are trying to be healthier and drink less,” Mizudho Kajiura, head of new brand marketing at Asahi, said in an interview. “We have to meet this demand.”

Japan isn’t the only place where these alternate ready-to-drink beverages are taking off, as consumers seeking to drink less choose moderation over abstention, said industry researcher IWSR. Consumption of low- and non-alcoholic drinks is projected to climb 31% across 10 major markets through 2024, including the U.S., Australia and France, according to the firm.

“This is creating a new drinking opportunity for people who like to drink beer,” Hitomi Okazaki, who leads Sapporo’s beer and ready-to-drink marketing group, said in an interview. “It’s helping people who want to have one drink during their spare time, or one more after drinking beer. Regular beer drinkers are spending more, buying this ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports in 2021/22 season total 4.2 mln tonnes so far
Ukraine has exported 18.2 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 17.5% from 15.5 million tonnes at the same stage a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on October 27.

That included 11.7 million tonnes of wheat, 4.2 million tonnes of barley and 2 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.

Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 61.5 million tonnes from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.

The government has said that grain exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.

Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.

The ministry said farms had harvested 56.3 million tonnes of grain by Oct. 27 from 76.5% of the sown area, with an average yield of 4.62 tonnes per hectare.
