USA & Australia: Bell’s Brewery agrees to sell to Australasian beer company Lion
|
Bell's Brewery is selling. Its leader, Larry Bell, is retiring. And with that, a changing of the guard is about to take place at Michigan's largest and oldest independent craft brewer, the Detroit Free Press reported on November 10.
Bell — who founded Bell's in 1985, brewing its first beers in a 15-gallon soup kettle and later inventing several hallmark beers such as the Two Hearted Ale and the Oberon Ale — announced he is selling his company to Australasian beer company Lion, a subsidiary of Japanese beverage conglomerate Kirin, for an undisclosed amount in the coming months. Lion also owns Colorado's New Belgium Brewing among its portfolio of international craft beer brands.
The move will ultimately combine Bell's, the 16th-largest overall brewer in America by sales volume in 2020, and New Belgium, the 11th-largest, into a "new American craft beer leader," though both will retain their brands and beers.
While the leadership team at Bell's will not change and neither will day-to-day operations at its Comstock-based facility and Kalamazoo-based Eccentric Café and Shop, the craft brewing titan will move forward without Bell, the pioneer of craft beer in Michigan and as influential of a figure as any in what has blossomed into

Australia: Coopers Brewery sees beer volumes tumble 8% in first four months of new financial year
|
Coopers Brewery beer volumes have tumbled 8 per cent in the first four months of the new financial year because of lockdowns in Sydney and Melbourne and uncertainty in other markets, The Financial Review reported on November 9.
Coopers, which has about 5 per cent of the national beer market and is Australia’s largest family-owned beer company, makes about three-quarters of its sales outside of its home state of South Australia.
Total keg sales in the four months to the end of October tumbled by 28 per cent after hospitality venues were shut in Sydney and Melbourne, managing director Tim Cooper said. Packaged beer sales could not offset the slide in those extended lockdowns.
“It’s been smashed in New South Wales and Victoria,” he said. “A lot of it is on the bulk side”.
It had been a tough start to the year after a solid performance in 2020-21 when net profit rose 5.8 per cent to A$25.5 million when a jump in sales of beer in cans and bottles to households drinking at home rather than in pubs and bars.
Dr Cooper said sales of packaged beer hit a record in 2020-21.
Coopers Brewery generated a pre-tax profit of A$36.5 million for the 12 months

India: United Breweries filing an appeal against CCI penalty
|
United Breweries, India's biggest beer maker, said it is in the process of filing an appeal before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against a Rs 752 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for cartelisation, The Economic Times reported on November 6.
“The company is in the process of preparing the grounds of appeal and the appeal will be filed within the time frame of two months from the date of the order. Basis legal advice, the company believes that it has a strong case on merits for successful appeal on this matter,” UBL said in an investor presentation.
In September, India’s competition watchdog found top beer companies UBL, Carlsberg India and Anheuser Busch InBev India to have indulged in price fixing for over a decade, and fined UBL and Carlsberg over Rs 870 crore to be paid within two months. Executives of the three beer companies, which together control over 90% of the market, exchanged sensitive information and colluded to fix beer prices, CCI said in its order.
UB said it has time until November end to file the appeal.
“Based on the advice of the external legal experts, the company is of the view that the Director

Spain: Brewers rule out possibility of beer supply shortage in Spain
|
As companies across Europe continue to struggle with supply chain problems, industry leaders warned that Spanish bars could run out of whisky, gin, vodka, and rum due to international transport issues, The Olive Press reported on November 7.
A lack of lorry drivers and warehouse operatives has left many companies finding it difficult to maintain a regular schedule of deliveries from outside of Spain.
But Spanish brewers have ruled out the possibility of supply problems in Spain thanks to high domestic production rates, which account for 90% of sales.
They also hope to recover their income levels prior to the coronavirus by the end of 2022.
The general director of the employers’ association Cerveceros de Espana, Jacobo Olalla said the collapse of the international transport system will not have any real impact on beer drinkers in Spain.
He said: “In our case, there may be a temporary problem with a specific brand, but the big difference is that 90% of the beer consumed in Spain is produced in the country.”
After the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, Mr Olalla recognises that there is ‘optimism’ in the industry and beer manufacturers have already noticed improvements compared to last year.
“The last quarter of this year is going

Australia: Grain harvest passes 4 mln tonnes despite rains
|
The Australian grain harvest has already moved over 4 million tonnes, as two of the biggest companies involved in the country's market, CBH and Grain Corp, reported the volumes they have received on November 8, the Fastmarkets reported.
The biggest progress was reported for rapeseeds and barley harvests, while the wheat harvest is still going slowly amid rain delays.
CBH, the biggest grain exporter and co-operative in Australia, has received 2 million tonnes of grains so far, including 1.4 million tonnes in the week ending November 7.
Grain Corp, another one of the biggest Australian exporters and producers, has harvested 2.3 million tonnes so far in three states – Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales.
Variable quality has been reported among the wheat harvest so far, but trade sources warned not to read too much into that as only small quantities have been harvested.
The country has been awash with rains recently, which have raised concerns over the final quality of the wheat and barley production and traders warned it is something that can change quickly.
Currently, where the harvest is more advanced, more feed grades have been observed for barley, while the overall rapeseed - or canola - quality was reported at a good level.

|
Ukrainian farms have harvested 67.8 million tonnes of grain from 87% of its sowing area, with the yield averaging 4.91 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on November 5.
The volume includes 32.3 million tonnes of wheat, 9.6 million tonnes of barley, 22.8 million tonnes of corn and small volumes of other grains, the ministry said.
Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020, the ministry has said.
