USA & Australia: Bell’s Brewery agrees to sell to Australasian beer company Lion
|
Bell's Brewery is selling. Its leader, Larry Bell, is retiring. And with that, a changing of the guard is about to take place at Michigan's largest and oldest independent craft brewer, the Detroit Free Press reported on November 10.
Bell — who founded Bell's in 1985, brewing its first beers in a 15-gallon soup kettle and later inventing several hallmark beers such as the Two Hearted Ale and the Oberon Ale — announced he is selling his company to Australasian beer company Lion, a subsidiary of Japanese beverage conglomerate Kirin, for an undisclosed amount in the coming months. Lion also owns Colorado's New Belgium Brewing among its portfolio of international craft beer brands.
The move will ultimately combine Bell's, the 16th-largest overall brewer in America by sales volume in 2020, and New Belgium, the 11th-largest, into a "new American craft beer leader," though both will retain their brands and beers.
While the leadership team at Bell's will not change and neither will day-to-day operations at its Comstock-based facility and Kalamazoo-based Eccentric Café and Shop, the craft brewing titan will move forward without Bell, the pioneer of craft beer in Michigan and as influential of a figure as any in what has blossomed into

USA, TX: Lazarus Brewing Co. expanding into second location in Austin
|
A local brewery is expanding into a second location on Airport Boulevard, picking up where two Austin mainstays left off, austin360 reported on November 9.
Lazarus Brewing Co. opened its doors in 2016 on East Sixth Street. Now, founder Christian Cryder says he plans to have an additional operation up and running by the summer, and it will be in a familiar space: the former I Luv Video and ColdTowne Theatre building at 4803 Airport Blvd.
“We happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Cryder says of landing the new spot.
Everything about the new location is going to be slightly bigger, he says — bigger brewhouse, bigger kitchen, bigger taproom, bigger patio space. Cryder hopes the second Lazarus location will feel similar to the original brewery but “new and fresh,” with more taps and an expanded kitchen menu.
Lazarus currently brews a bevy of seasonal beers, as well as flagships like 40 Days & 40 Nights and Walks on Water (both American IPAs), Prodigal Pils (a German pilsner) and Amandus (a Belgian strong gold). The Sixth Street location also has an espresso bar and serves tacos, tortas, rice bowls and other snacks.

USA, VA: Settle Down Easy Brewing Co. to open its second location in Oakton
|
Three-year-old Settle Down Easy Brewing Co., in Falls Church, will open a second location in Oakton, Virginia, WTOP reported on November 9.
It will be the first craft brewery in Oakton when it opens next spring at Hunter Mill Plaza at the intersection of Route 123, Chain Bridge Road and Hunter Mill Road.
The Oakton location will be a one-barrel brew house. The 4,000-square-foot tasting room, with seating for 80, will serve Settle Down’s beers, as well as rotating taps of other Fairfax County breweries, local ciders on tap and a wine list.
It also has a partnership with Vienna, Virginia-based The Fermented Pig, a family-owned business, selling its artisan meats and charcuterie online, through local delivery and at farmers markets, and catering. As part of the partnership, The Fermented Pig will open its first brick-and-mortar location inside the Oakton brewery.
The menu will also include salads, cheeses and entrees. The Fermented Pig sources ingredients from local suppliers within 100 miles.
The original Settle Down Easy Brewing Co. in Falls Church thrived during the pandemic, doubling its production last year to keep up with to-go orders.
“We experienced wonderful success following our initial opening and even throughout the global pandemic we were able to expand our

USA, IA: Twisted Vine Brewery signs lease to occupy new space in Des Moines
|
Another brewery is joining the burgeoning downtown Des Moines craft beer scene.
On Monday, November 8, Twisted Vine Brewery signed a lease to occupy the 7,500-square-foot space that was the longtime home of The Garden nightclub in the East Village. The club moved out earlier this year to make way for a $6.3 million renovation of the nearly 150-year-old brick building at 112 S.E. Fourth St. as part of the planned Market District development.
Building developer and landlord Tim Rypma said the five partners in Twisted Vine will begin work on the brewery and tasting room in January and hope to open to the public in late spring.
Plans for the brewery also call for a 5,000-square-foot patio.
One of the partners, Brian Sabus, said the brewery will close its current location at 3320 Westown Parkway near Valley West Mall.
Twisted Vine began as a passion project for homebrewers Sabus, Steve Becker and Steve Breman in 2011, with a three-barrel brewing system in a 20-by-20-foot space inside the Madison County Winery in St. Charles.
In 2015 two additional partners, Jasen Garrett and Paul Galloway, joined the team, and by 2016, the operation had moved to the 7,200-square-foot building it currently occupies in West Des Moines,

USA, TX: Man Overboard Brewing to open December 4 in San Antonio
|
Beer buffs wading through the Pearl area's sea of brewery options will soon find Man Overboard Brewing. The family-owned brewery and tap room is opening Saturday, December 4 in what was formerly the home of Bexar Stage, an improv comedy theatre, MySanAntonio reported on November 6.
Man Overboard Brewing is owned by the Merrimans, a military family that has roots in San Antonio. Justin Merriman is one of the owners and brewers alongside his father Ron Merriman, mom Cindy Merriman and wife Irene Merriman. Beer fans can get their first taste of the brewery on Black Friday during a soft opening phase. While the November opening isn't the official launch, Justin Merriman says customers will be able to experience the full menu which includes a honey blonde ale, a tangerine wheat beer, a German dunkel, a Belgian golden ale, an IPA and a seltzer.
Justin Merriman says he and his father had been considering taking their brews public for a while. Everything came together when they found the 1203 Camden location earlier this year. Bexar Stage, the improv comedy company, moved out of the 4,400-square-foot space in October 2020 promising to return at another location "when this virus' threat is

USA, MN: Heavy Rotation Brewing plans spring 2022 opening in Brooklyn Park
|
The Brooklyn Park City Council approved a conditional use permit to allow a new brewery and taproom to operate in the city. Heavy Rotation Brewing plans to locate in the Stone Mountain Plaza retail building, north of Highway 610, at 9801 Xenia Ave. N., CCX Media reported on November 9.
“In Brooklyn Park, we just really love the location,” said Ken Smith, one of the owners of the future brewery. “Brooklyn Park is just a really nice city.”
The city council on November 8 also approved an on-sale taproom license and off-sale brewer license that will allow the company to sell growlers and crowlers.
Heavy Rotation Brewing is described as a “nano-brewery,” meaning it will brew in small batches with plans to change up its menu of craft beers frequently.
Smith said the brewery, which remains under construction, could also bring in food trucks and live music.
The trio of owners have more than a decade of experience in the brewing industry. They include Smith, who comes from Utepils Brewing in Minneapolis, Josh Denny, who is from Wicked Wort Brewing Co. in Robbinsdale, and Scott Smith.
The owners hope to open next spring.

USA, OR: Breakside Brewery planning to purchase property for a massive new location in Gresham
|
Oregon’s Breakside Brewery has plans to purchase property from the Port of Portland to open a massive new location in Gresham, Oregon, New School Beer reported.
Pending approval by the Port Commission on November 10th, Breakside plans to construct a commercial brewery for distribution and expansion into new markets at the Gresham Vista Business Park and also develop their sixth retail location on-site following the new and upcoming Lake Oswego and Beaverton locations that the New School exclusively first reported on back in January.
The land in Gresham is a 30.98 acre lot, heavily sloped, and includes a natural wooded area and the man-made McGill Reservoir on its northern border, and is surrounded by a semiconductor fabrication facility on a relatively flat plateau. Breakside is proposing an innovative development at Gresham Vista Lot 10 that would have an outdoor recreational area with food trucks, trails, and other amenities on top of the public taproom and industrial brewery and distribution/packaging HUB. The wooded areas and the reservoir would be preserved to sustain a more rustic, agrarian, and outdoorsy feel with unique topography, that would at the same time increase the viability of future commercial development at the adjacent Lot 11 as a result

USA, UT: Park City Brewing plans second location in Salt Lake City in 2022
|
Under new ownership, Park City Brewing has launched five new beers, expects to open its new taproom next month and plans to open a second location in Salt Lake City in 2022, The Salt Lake Tribune reported on November 10.
The new canned beers celebrate quirks of the mountain town considered the birthplace of craft brewing in Utah, from its history to its weather. And Park City Brewing expects to add seasonal and limited edition batches near the end of the year, said president and director of operations Jeff Tito.
A brewery and taproom are slated to open in December in Kimball Junction, possibly with a barbecue-style menu, Tito said. For now, the new beers are being produced under contract brewing with Uinta Brewing in Salt Lake City.
He and head brewer Mike Perine experimented with about 20 beer recipes before settling on the current lineup, Tito said. Using Park City-inspired names for each beer, he added, drives home that everything the company does is local.
The beers currently are sold in cans, with Powder Buoy also served as a draft.
They’re available in multiple Park City locations, including O.P. Rockwell, Grappa and Downstairs, and in Salt Lake City at Whiskey Street and Piper Down

Australia: Coopers Brewery sees beer volumes tumble 8% in first four months of new financial year
|
Coopers Brewery beer volumes have tumbled 8 per cent in the first four months of the new financial year because of lockdowns in Sydney and Melbourne and uncertainty in other markets, The Financial Review reported on November 9.
Coopers, which has about 5 per cent of the national beer market and is Australia’s largest family-owned beer company, makes about three-quarters of its sales outside of its home state of South Australia.
Total keg sales in the four months to the end of October tumbled by 28 per cent after hospitality venues were shut in Sydney and Melbourne, managing director Tim Cooper said. Packaged beer sales could not offset the slide in those extended lockdowns.
“It’s been smashed in New South Wales and Victoria,” he said. “A lot of it is on the bulk side”.
It had been a tough start to the year after a solid performance in 2020-21 when net profit rose 5.8 per cent to A$25.5 million when a jump in sales of beer in cans and bottles to households drinking at home rather than in pubs and bars.
Dr Cooper said sales of packaged beer hit a record in 2020-21.
Coopers Brewery generated a pre-tax profit of A$36.5 million for the 12 months

India: United Breweries filing an appeal against CCI penalty
|
United Breweries, India's biggest beer maker, said it is in the process of filing an appeal before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against a Rs 752 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for cartelisation, The Economic Times reported on November 6.
“The company is in the process of preparing the grounds of appeal and the appeal will be filed within the time frame of two months from the date of the order. Basis legal advice, the company believes that it has a strong case on merits for successful appeal on this matter,” UBL said in an investor presentation.
In September, India’s competition watchdog found top beer companies UBL, Carlsberg India and Anheuser Busch InBev India to have indulged in price fixing for over a decade, and fined UBL and Carlsberg over Rs 870 crore to be paid within two months. Executives of the three beer companies, which together control over 90% of the market, exchanged sensitive information and colluded to fix beer prices, CCI said in its order.
UB said it has time until November end to file the appeal.
“Based on the advice of the external legal experts, the company is of the view that the Director

Australia: Grain harvest passes 4 mln tonnes despite rains
|
The Australian grain harvest has already moved over 4 million tonnes, as two of the biggest companies involved in the country's market, CBH and Grain Corp, reported the volumes they have received on November 8, the Fastmarkets reported.
The biggest progress was reported for rapeseeds and barley harvests, while the wheat harvest is still going slowly amid rain delays.
CBH, the biggest grain exporter and co-operative in Australia, has received 2 million tonnes of grains so far, including 1.4 million tonnes in the week ending November 7.
Grain Corp, another one of the biggest Australian exporters and producers, has harvested 2.3 million tonnes so far in three states – Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales.
Variable quality has been reported among the wheat harvest so far, but trade sources warned not to read too much into that as only small quantities have been harvested.
The country has been awash with rains recently, which have raised concerns over the final quality of the wheat and barley production and traders warned it is something that can change quickly.
Currently, where the harvest is more advanced, more feed grades have been observed for barley, while the overall rapeseed - or canola - quality was reported at a good level.

Ukrainian farms have harvested 67.8 million tonnes of grain from 87% of its sowing area, with the yield averaging 4.91 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on November 5.
The volume includes 32.3 million tonnes of wheat, 9.6 million tonnes of barley, 22.8 million tonnes of corn and small volumes of other grains, the ministry said.
Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020, the ministry has said.

Spain: Brewers rule out possibility of beer supply shortage in Spain
|
As companies across Europe continue to struggle with supply chain problems, industry leaders warned that Spanish bars could run out of whisky, gin, vodka, and rum due to international transport issues, The Olive Press reported on November 7.
A lack of lorry drivers and warehouse operatives has left many companies finding it difficult to maintain a regular schedule of deliveries from outside of Spain.
But Spanish brewers have ruled out the possibility of supply problems in Spain thanks to high domestic production rates, which account for 90% of sales.
They also hope to recover their income levels prior to the coronavirus by the end of 2022.
The general director of the employers’ association Cerveceros de Espana, Jacobo Olalla said the collapse of the international transport system will not have any real impact on beer drinkers in Spain.
He said: “In our case, there may be a temporary problem with a specific brand, but the big difference is that 90% of the beer consumed in Spain is produced in the country.”
After the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, Mr Olalla recognises that there is ‘optimism’ in the industry and beer manufacturers have already noticed improvements compared to last year.
“The last quarter of this year is going
