USA, ME: Rusty Bus Brewing Co. to open in Lewiston this spring
|
A new craft brewery will open this spring on downtown Lisbon Street in Lewiston after winning a business incubator contest, the Sun Journal reported on November 11.
Rusty Bus Brewing Co. was announced the winner of the JumpstartME contest Thursday, an initiative launched in July by the Downtown Lewiston Association and LA Metro Chamber of Commerce.
According to a news release announcing the winner, the contest generated over a dozen applicants vying for a grand prize package valued at more than $80,000 in donated business services.
The brewery’s owners, Peter and Nicole Ouellette, had been searching for the right location in downtown Lewiston for several years, the release said. While craft brewing has been a longtime passion, Peter Ouellette has been managing Hudson Bus Lines for the past decade, while Nicole has been teaching at Farwell Elementary School in Lewiston for the past seven years.
“We really fell in love with the atmosphere of craft breweries, the quality of people that we have met, and the brotherhood among breweries in general,” Peter Ouellette said.
The couple began their first home brewing operation in 2016, and considered a Portland location in 2018 but reconsidered due to market saturation.
They will brew on-site at the Lisbon Street location

UK: Cloudwater Brew Company in Manchester crowned UK’s best independent brewery
|
The UK’s best independent breweries, as rated by the public, have been revealed in new research from South Western Railway, The Drinks Business reported on November 11.
The Cloudwater Brew Company in Manchester has been crowned the best independent brewery in the UK, followed by Stewart Brewing in Loanhead and Kernel Brewery in London, according to the data.
London has been ranked as the best location for independent breweries, with Manchester placing second and Leeds third. The research also revealed that Bristol is home to three of the top 15 best breweries in the UK – more than any other town or city.
With over 2,000 independent breweries in the UK, and over 74,000 Google searches a month for ‘breweries’ alone, it is evident that the UK’s love for local beer continues to grow. South Western Railway ranked each independent brewery based on their average Google review rating, the number of beers the brewery has produced and the rating of the top performing beer, according to (the international website for craft beer enthusiasts).
Cloudwater, which took the top spot for being the best independent brewery in the UK, was one of only three to receive top marks for a beer produced and receive 5

UK: Scotland’s first new grain distillery in 10 years gets green light to start construction
|
Developers of a new £46 mln grain distillery in the Borders which will source thousands of local wheat and barley annually have welcomed the green light to start construction, FarmingUK reported on November 12.
Plans to create Scotland’s first grain distillery in 10 years have taken a significant step forward after it was approved by planners earlier this week.
The St. Boswells Distillery, based at Charlesfield Industrial Estate in the Scottish Borders, will also become Scotland’s lowest carbon grain distillery.
It will produce 20 million litres of pure alcohol a year to meet the growing demand for grain whisky for use in Scotch Whisky blending and a Scottish grain neutral spirit for gin and vodka.
The site will source local cereals from growers in the surrounding Tweed Valley and process them sustainably with renewable energy into the spirit.
The cereals, once spent, will be passed to the adjacent anaerobic digestion plant, where they will be converted into methane, with the remaining material being used as soil conditioner for the crops.
Jack Distillers, the firm behind the facility, said the development will create about 20 permanent jobs and 200 during construction.
The 18 month construction period is scheduled to begin in 2022, and spirit will be produced in

Ukraine: 9.6 mln tonnes of barley harvested to-date
|
Ukrainian farms have harvested 73.4 million tonnes of grain from 91% of its sowing area, with the yield averaging 5.08 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on November 12.
The volume includes 32.3 million tonnes of wheat, 9.6 million tonnes of barley, 28.1 million tonnes of corn and small volumes of other grains, the ministry said.
Favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020, the ministry has said.
It has said the grain exports could jump to 61.5 million tonnes in the 2021/22 July-June season, from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The volume could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
Last season Ukraine exported 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.

Spain: Beer maker Damm halts production at main brewery after cyber attack
|
Spain's second biggest beer maker Damm halted output at its main brewery outside Barcelona after a cyber attack hit its computer systems earlier this week, a spokesperson said on November 12.
The attack hit the brewery on Tuesday night (November 9) and for a few hours the plant in El Prat de Llobregat, which produces 7 million hectolitres of beer a year, was "entirely paralyzed", Olga Vidal, Damm's head of communications, told Reuters on November 12.
"IT services made possible a partial resumption of production and we expect to operate at 100% in the coming hours," she said.
She declined to say whether a ransom was demanded of the company or if the maker of Estrella Damm lager had paid anything to the hackers behind the attack.
She wouldn't confirm whether the company had notified the police and local police declined to comment.
Damm bottles several other beer brands beside its iconic Estrella Damm and has honoured all deliveries to bars, restaurants and supermarkets thanks to existing stocks, Vidal said.
Several high-profile cyber attacks in the past year, including the Colonial Pipeline hack, which caused panic buying of fuel across the eastern US in May, have jolted governments and companies into reviewing their security policies.

UK & Netherlands: BrewDog and La Trappe release collaboration beer after almost two years in the making
|
After almost two years in the making, BrewDog and La Trappe have released a collaboration beer called Practise What You Preach, the Grampian Online reported on November 11.
The 10 per cent quadruple ale features heather honey and experimental US hops.
The beer – which launched on the BrewDog online store and in all of its bars on November 11 – has been brewed at La Trappe’s Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven B.V in the Netherlands.
Prior to realising the recipe, La Trappe spent time at BrewDog HQ in December 2019 to create a concept that showcases the best of both breweries.
After landing on the quadruple style, which is celebrated worldwide as one of the most complex and significant styles of Trappist beer, both breweries then agreed to add heather honey and experimental US hop, HBC-692.
The beer will be available to try at La Trappe tap takeovers at all UK bars, where BrewDog's crews will be pouring Practise What You Preach alongside La Trappe’s collection of year-round beers.
People can also grab a 330ml bottle of the 10 per cent ale on BrewDog.com, with limited stock available alongside a small selection of glassware and tin signs.
As with many of the products produced by a Trappist brewery,
