USA, VA: Champion Brewing and Reason Beers agree to merge
|
Two Charlottesville brewers announced they’re merging, but Champion Brewing and Reason Beers will continue selling under their own brands, WINA reported on November 16.
Champion CEO Hunter Smith and Reason CFO Jeff Raileanu announced the merger at Reason’s facility in Seminole Place off Seminole Trail. Smith said Champion through the next couple of months will be moving its brewing equipment from the Woolen Mills Missile Factory to Reason, and the brewing will happen with similar equipment and one brewing team. Smith says no jobs are going away. They’re moving their team of seven to Seminole Place, and the taproom remains open at 6th Street SE.
Raileanu said he and Smith starting talking a couple of months ago, and over a dinner together started checking off similar things the companies were paying for on their own. The two found they can each pay much less under a consolidation of facilities, and be able to make each other’s brands stronger.
For instance, Smith said Champion has not been able to make to scale “wild” beers, and Reason’s brewers will be able to help with that. Champion has a distribution to 10 other states and DC, and Reason will be able to take advantage of

USA, KS: Stockyards Brewing Co. planning Overland Park facility sometime in 2022
|
Stockyards Brewing Co., located in Kansas City’s West Bottoms, is making plans to open a second location in Overland Park. According to the Shawnee Mission Post, the Overland Park Planning Commission has approved a special use permit.
The brewery plans on opening a 25,000-square-foot facility at 10310 Mastin St., near Skate City. The area has historically struggled to keep tenants and Stockyards hopes to change that.
The West Bottoms brewery currently has a brewhouse and offers beer on tap plus wine, cocktails and small snacks. Stockyards is looking to expand on that with an even bigger brewhouse plus a kitchen in Overland Park. The new location also would offer indoor seating, expanded outdoor seating and still offer beer, wine and cocktails.
While full details of the construction process have yet to be released, the plan is to have the new location fully operational sometime in 2022.

Canada, QC: Labatt Breweries investing C$110 million in Quebec’s economy
|
Labatt Breweries of Canada is investing C$110 million in Quebec’s economy that includes a significant environmental enhancement to its Montreal brewery through a new capital program that runs from 2019-2022, the Canadian Packaging reported on November 15.
Both Quebec and Montreal will benefit from the investment, with C$43.7 million going directly into Labatt’s Montreal brewery to fund increased brewing capacity and the implementation of KeelClip(™) – a first-of-its-kind technology in North America that uses a sustainable, fibre paperboard packaging system instead of plastic.
The remainder of the C$110 million investment will go towards non-brewery operations across the province including distribution and technology enhancements, and commercial initiatives. This investment will not only help accelerate the province’s post-COVID economic recovery, but it will also lead to a significant reduction in single-use plastic, signalling the company’s commitment to Montreal and the province of Quebec.

USA, WI: Station 1 Brewing Company already open in Suamico
|
A fire house, beer and a whole lot of history.
Those are three main components to Station 1 Brewing Company, 1745 Riverside Drive, which recently opened in Suamico, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on November 12.
Station 1 opened in what had been an operating fire station until the village of Suamico sold the building in April. The business is owned by five families who came together to open the brewery.
Peter App, one of the owners, is the person you're most likely to see if you stop by though.
"I just happen to be the one that is here every day, all day, and that's great," App said.
While the space has been renovated and people are welcome to come for community and a beer — it's not Station 1's brews you'll be drinking. At least not yet.
The brewery itself is still a work in progress.
"Soon," is how long App said customers will have to wait to try their amber ale, IPA and blonde ale, which are currently in the works.
"It takes longer to put together a manufacturing plant than I'd expect," App said.

Mexico & USA: Baja Brewing Company expands its US distribution
|
Baja Brewing Company, the original craft brewery in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, is celebrating two important milestones: winning Best Large Brewery of Mexico by Copa Cerveza and expanding its US distribution by adding New York State to its stateside lineup, Brewbound reported on November 15.
Copa Cerveza, the most prestigious beer competition in Mexico, took place in October in Mexico City where 28 international beer judges evaluated more than 600 beers in 42 categories. 130 Mexican breweries participated, of which, Baja Brewing Company was the most decorated with five medals and being recognized as the Best Large Brewery in Mexico.
Since its inception in 2007, Baja Brewing Company has been pushing the boundaries of Mexican beer. The company’s mission from the start was to bring a craft brewing culture to Mexico similar to that in Colorado, where Founder/Brewmaster Jordan Gardenhire first began brewing beer while in college at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Canada, ON: Grove Brewing Company moving to new location in Kingsville
|
The Grove Brewing Company has announced plans to move to 86 Wigle Avenue in Kingsville this spring, windsorite.ca reported on November 14.
The new facility will boast 9000sqft compared to their current 1800sqft space at 12 Main Street East. The move will allow the brewery to immediately begin doubling its production capacity to meet increasing demand.
“Our brand is growing to the point where 12 Main St. is no longer practical to operate in,” explains co-owner Jeremy Truax. “The need to increase storage, update brewing equipment and redesign the production layout has become imperative for us to function.”
The Grove has hired local street artist DERKZ to design the facade of their new facility. The newly revealed mural memorializes legendary Kingsville stories that are told through The Grove’s beer brands.
“DERKZ is an influential, modern-day storyteller who brought our stories of Kingsville history to life,” said co-owner Jeff Smith. “Our local community past and present is a massive part of who we are, and we will continue to demonstrate this idea moving forward in our new space.”
The Grove Brewing Company is still discussing the future of the downtown Kingsville location.

USA, CO: Old Colorado City Brewing kicks of second grand opening serving its own beer
|
Old Colorado City Brewing opened on in Colorado Springs in late summer, but a series of confounding plumbing issues meant it did so without OCC beers on tap, the Gazette reported on November 12.
That changes Thursday, November 18, as the brewery kicks off a second grand opening serving its own suds.
“What saved us is that we were really lucky to be part of such an amazing and generous community of brewers that was willing to partner with us until we could start brewing on our own system,” said owner Dan Ramos, whose brewery created collaboration brews with Cerberus Brewing, Metric Brewing and Fossil Craft Beer Company to fill the tap void.
Now that OCC brews are flowing, keep an eye out for Belgians made with locally sourced ingredients, and a menu that’s been tweaked to complement the new brews.
“The reason I opened a brewpub is so I could play at being a brewer and indulge in the beers that I love. Our hearts are in Belgium, and that’s what we’ll be focusing on,” Ramos said.

USA, MI: Saugatuck Brewing Company to relocate to downtown Kalamazoo
|
There’s more news this week for Kalamazoo related to breweries in the city. Saugatuck Brewing Company says it is planning to relocate to the heart of downtown Kalamazoo in a release on November 11, WKZO reported.
The company says it will be moving to the Peninsula Building at 200 E. Michigan Ave.. It was the former location of the Olde Peninsula Brewpub which closed its doors back in June after 25 years of operations. The relocation will happen once necessary licensing is completed.
Saugatuck Brewing currently operates at 140 S. Westnedge Ave and has another location in the city of Douglas in Allegan County.

USA: Anheuser-Busch’s St. Louis brewery brining back its original flagship beer
|
The taps at Anheuser-Busch’s St. Louis brewery will soon flow with a beer that hasn’t been tasted in more than a century, The Business Journals reported.
AB announced on November 16 it’s bringing back its original flagship beer, the St. Louis Lager. It was the main brand for the company when it first started in St. Louis back in the 1850s.
“By bringing back St. Louis Lager this December, we are proud to recognize the community that has enabled us to continue to grow and connect with consumers all over the world,” said Colleen Lucas, vice president of corporate social responsibility and heritage at AB.
St. Louis Lager is a darker beer which started as a regional brew but ended up being distributed all over the world. It won gold medals at tasting competitions in Philadelphia in 1876, Paris in 1878 and Amsterdam in 1883.
St. Louis Lager is being brewed in the company’s Research Pilot Brewery in St. Louis based on the original recipe from the Anheuser-Busch archives. It will be available in December at the Anheuser-Busch St. Louis Biergarten for a limited time.

France: Barley shipments outside the EU down in October
|
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union last month reached their highest for an October since the 2014/15 season as shipments to China ramped up following a slow September, Refinitiv data showed.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the 27-country bloc totalled 973,300 tonnes in October, the fourth month of the 2021/22 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.
China was the largest non-EU destination for French soft wheat for the second consecutive month, with an initial estimate of 431,500 tonnes, followed by Algeria with 193,400 tonnes.
A ship carrying 65,000 tonnes of French soft wheat which loaded at Dunkirk in October recently exited the Suez canal headed to an unknown destination. The vessel's size and its course towards Asia suggested it could be another shipment for China.
French barley exports outside the EU reached 288,100 tonnes, down from the 372,600 tonnes recorded in September, and less than a third of the 909,900 shipped in August.
China again dominated barley flows, with the October shipments including 165,400 tonnes of feed barley and 60,700 tonnes of malting barley for the Asian country. Another 62,000 tonnes of malting barley were shipped to five other destinations.

The Czech Republic: Beer and spirits becoming more expensive in pubs and restaurants
|
Beverages are becoming more expensive in Czech pubs and restaurants. Price increases in the catering sector had been expected, as establishments have to make up for lost revenue due to the Covid lockdowns. At the same time, inflation has been hitting all sectors of the Czech economy, Expats.cz reported on November 15.
Restaurant gardens were allowed to reopen in the Czech Republic this year on May 17, and interiors on May 31. Since the reopening, prices have started to creep up, according to an analysis firm SharpGrid, which monitors the hotel, restaurant, and cafe (HoReCa) sector based on data from around 6,000 locations.
When restaurant and pub prices for the third quarter of this year are compared to the second quarter, people saw the biggest increases in spirits. Gin rose by an average of 8 percent to CZK 65 for a 0.04-liter shot, rum by 7 percent to CZK 75 per shot, and vodka by 4 percent to CZK 52 per shot. A half-litre of beer was up by 2.7 percent, reaching CZK 38. Soft drinks became more expensive in hotels in the second quarter as well.
