USA: Craft beer could become more expensive amid aluminum cans crisis
|
Your next can of craft beer might be a lot more expensive, CNN warned on November 27.
Ball Corp., one of the world's largest suppliers of aluminum cans, is sending shockwaves throughout the craft beer world after lifting the minimum number of cans certain producers must order and saying it will raise prices.
Ball said it will now require that non-contract customers - who include many smaller breweries - order no fewer than five truckloads (roughly 1.02 million cans) per each of their beverages starting on January 1. The previous purchase minimum was one truckload per product.
Additionally, starting in 2022, Ball wrote that it would no longer be able to store excess cans from those non-contract customers in its warehouses and that the price-per-can would increase by nearly 50% for at least some non-contract customers, according to notices sent to breweries.
The news has many small and regional breweries scrambling to secure cans and has spurred fears of heftier costs, reduced variety and higher prices for consumers.
"I do see this as an economic killer for some, and certainly most small brewers are going to have to raise prices significantly or rethink their entire models," said Garrett Marrero, chief executive officer and co-founder of

USA, MI: Harmony Brewing Co. LLC becomes a microbrewery
|
After serving patrons as a brewpub for nearly a decade, Harmony Brewing Co. LLC is expanding to include the distribution of its beers in addition to a new line of wine and spirits, MiBiz reported on November 30.
The sibling-owned brewpub, which operates two locations in Grand Rapids, announced today that its new licensing with the state designates Harmony Brewing Company as a microbrewery. With the new designation, Harmony Brewing plans to distribute its beer to both restaurants and specialty beverage stores throughout West Michigan. The licenses were issued on Oct. 18, according to Michigan Liquor Control Commission filings.
“We have been dreaming about this for a really long time,” Harmony Brewing co-owner Jackson VanDyke said in a statement. ”Harmony has been around for 10 years, and we have established a company with a strong reputation and some fantastic products that we are super proud of. We put a lot of love into what we do, and we can’t wait to get Harmony in front of even more people.”
To facilitate the changes, the brewery is planning investments in both of its facilities. This includes a new canning line and upgrades to production equipment at Harmony Hall, which is located at 401 Stocking

USA, TX: Braindead Brewing closing down for good
|
A pioneering Dallas craft beer bar is counting down its final days. Braindead Brewing, which had been open in Deep Ellum for nearly seven years, will shutter this weekend, with its final day on Sunday November 28, the CultureMap Dallas reported.
Word from staffers began to leak during Thanksgiving week, and the bar finally posted the news on its Facebook page, stating that "this will be our last weekend of business."
"Our big homie Leo J will be jammin the tunes. Come out for some grub and one last pint before we close the doors Sunday night," their post said.
BrainDead was opened in March 2015 by friends and partners Sam Wynne, Jeff Fryman, brewer Andrew Huerter, and chef David Pena, with a wall of taps — affixed to colorful retro refrigerator door panels — that included their own beers made onsite. Patrons could also take beer to-go in growlers, which was an up-and-coming thing in 2015.
In addition to beer, they had a good menu of "beer influenced" food, which they updated frequently, embracing trends like vegan and regional cooking; they even briefly operated a vegan bakery called SugarFang.
They also hosted an epic annual beer event called Festicle, which took place on their

USA, PA: Couch Brewery to close, Tortured Soul Brewing to take the space over
|
For more than four years, Couch Brewery has been serving craft beer to customers at its relatively large facility located on Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh’s East End, right at the border of Larimer and Highland Park. The corridor was historically known for auto sales, but Couch evolved that use with its bar and on-site craft brewery that exuded a retro vibe and was filled with comfortable couches, shag carpeting, and dim lighting.
But that four-year run has come to an end, as Couch Brewery announced on Nov. 28 that it will be closing up shop permanently. The last day at Couch will be Sun., Dec. 19, according to a social media post from the brewery, the Pittsburgh City Paper reported.
“They say all good things must come to an end and boy have we had a beautiful run. With a tear in our eye and a beer in our hand we are sad to announce our last day will be on Sunday, December 19th,” reads Couch’s social media post. "It has been a pleasure to serve you all over the last few years.”
According to Couch, another brewery will be taking over the space on Washington Boulevard. Tortured Souls Brewing, which has already

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria commissions new production line
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc has commissioned a new £2.0 mln production line at its plant in Ogba, Lagos, the Leadership News reported on November 28.
The new line, which is designed for the production of spirit drinks, is expected to produce about 600,000 EUs of the company’s iconic spirits brands including Orijin Bitters per year.
The “Cube 2” product line was commissioned by the President, Diageo Africa, John O’Keeffe accompanied by the British deputy high commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ben Llewellyn-Jones.
The managing director of Guinness Nigeria, Baker Magunda said the company is determined to ensure that it meets the demands of its esteemed and loyal consumers who have believed in the iconic brands from the company for over seven decades.
“What we have today is a reflection of our ambition to grow our investments and the focus on optimizing our capital expenditure. This investment forms a key part of our supply strategy for meeting the increasing demands for brands in our portfolio and particularly our spirit drinks to satisfy our customers,” Magunda said.
Speaking on Guinness’ determination to support the efforts of governments across Africa to grow their economies through effective backward integration, president, Diageo Africa, John O’Keeffe said the company is determined to support

UK: Carling and Foster’s remain UK’s top two best-selling lagers
|
UK’s top two best-selling lagers have remained the same for another year with Carling and Foster’s taking the number one and two spots, The Morning Advertiser reported on November 30.
Carling had sales of 1,129,143 hectolitres (HL) in terms of volume and £662.2 mln in value (down 34.5% and 33.1% respectively), figures from The Morning Advertiser’s 2022 Drinks List has found.
Second place Foster’s recorded similar percentage drops with value falling by 32.7% to 689,084 hl and value by 31.1% to £426.5 mln.
Two full lockdowns and a multitude of restrictions placed on pubs over the past 12 months has meant most brands in the category saw a sales drop.
Furthermore, statistics from the British Beer & Pub Association’s 2021 Statistical Handbook revealed beer consumption fell by four percentage points over the 2020 lockdowns, with total beer sales dropping by 14.2%.
Typically, seven in 10 alcoholic drinks served in a pub are beer and the BBPA has stated the numbers demonstrate the damage of lockdowns to brewers, who lost a key route to market when pubs were forced to close during the lockdowns of 2020.
However, for this year’s Drinks List, none of the top 10 saw volume or value sales drop by more than 38%.

India: United Breweries lays off more than 150 employees, mostly senior and mid-level executives
|
India’s United Breweries, the maker of the Kingfisher beer, has laid off more than 150 employees, mostly senior and mid-level executives, to reduce cost and create a leaner structure amid an uncertain demand outlook in the beer segment, people with knowledge of the matter said.
The laid-off employees accounted for about 5% of the nearly 3,000 people employed by the country's largest brewer, The Economic Times reported on December 1.
"United Breweries Ltd has reviewed its organisation structure to ensure it is lean, efficient and future-ready in light of the rapidly evolving market circumstances. It is a result of a comprehensive review of the organisation structure which is a part of a broader project that began last year. As an outcome of this review, some positions have been impacted," said a UB spokesperson, who did not specify how many people were laid off.
In June, Dutch multinational Heineken had taken full control of UB, the erstwhile flagship brand of Vijay Mallya's UB Group.
The Bengaluru-based company said the restructuring was not triggered by the Heineken acquisition.
The retrenched employees have been extended support including severance benefits, access to outplacement services, health benefits and counselling services through the transition, the company said.

UK: Pub chain JD Wetherspoon signs 20-year on-tap deal with Budweiser
|
UK pub chain JD Wetherspoon has signed a new 20-year supply deal with AB InBev's Budweiser, marking the end of a four decade-long arrangement between the pubco and brewing giant Heineken, the Yahoo News UK reported on November 29.
The deal will see Budweiser become the Wetherspoons' largest supplier from December 15. (The pubco also recently agreed new deals with BrewDog, Carlsberg Marrston's and Molson Coors).
Budweiser, Stella Artois, Corona and Leffe Blonde will from then "feature prominently" on draught in the chain's 860 pubs, while Heineken's Strongbow will be replaced by Weston's Stowford Press Apple.
A Wetherspoons spokesperson told the Standard Heineken will stop supplying Wetherspoons with draught beers, but is in discussions over supplying bottled beers.
Budweiser's president, Paula Lindenberg, said the move "provides a fantastic opportunity to invest at scale in the UK’s vibrant hospitality sector".
A Heineken spokesperson said: “We confirm that we have decided not to renew the lead brewer contract with JD Wetherspoon and subsequently a number of our brands will not be supplied on draught as of mid-December.
“Customers will still be able to enjoy HEINEKEN brands at a Wetherspoon pub, as we will continue to provide a number of brands as packaged products.”
Wetherspoons crashed to
