Brewery news USA, MD: Wico Street Beer Co. to open in Pigtown soon
Cousins Jordan McGraw and Michael Richardson are opening Wico Street Beer Co. at the 1100 Wicomico building in Pigtown. The brewery will be located in a 4,200 sq. ft. first-floor space that will be part of a new two-story marketplace concept in the building, SouthBMore.com reported on December 1.

McGraw has been working in brewing for 13 years. He helped open Hysteria Brewing Company in Columbia, later ran operations at Full Tilt Brewing in North Baltimore, and is currently working at Oliver Brewing Company in East Baltimore. McGraw introduced Richardson to craft beer and the two wrote a business plan for their own brewery five years ago.

McGraw and Richardson were hoping to open a location in Baltimore City and began negotiating on the space in Pigtown in late-2019. The two were initially looking in North Baltimore neighborhoods and were interested in taking over UNION Craft Brewing’s old brewery, but the space was not yet available at the time.

A family friend told them to check out the 1100 Wicomico building. “I was not expecting to like this place,” said McGraw, who noted he had his doubts about Pigtown. But, once the two toured the space, they saw the promise.

Brewery news USA, MA: Construction of Castle Island Brewing Company completed in South Boston
Kaplan Construction announced that it has completed construction of the 9,500 SF Castle Island Brewing Company at 10 Old Colony Avenue in South Boston, the Boston Real Estate Times reported on December 2.

Located within an existing industrial building, the South Boston location features a 4,000 SF main tasting room with seating for 220 people, a retail area, and a 1,900 SF private event space which can accommodate up to 140 people. A quarter of Castle Island’s new space accommodates the brewing operations, including a brewhouse and seven 10-barrel tanks. A large focal wall is made from wood and metal and features the Castle Island Brewing Company logo.

“This was our third project with Kaplan since we opened in 2015 and, once again, the team did a phenomenal job, particularly in negotiating some tricky, unanticipated conditions below-slab,” said Adam Romanow, founder and president of Castle Island Brewing Company. “This building has a strong personal significance to me as it used to be owned by my great-grandfather. I was very touched when the Kaplan team found an old blueprint of the building in the walls and had it framed for me to display. That level of thoughtfulness is unmatched in the industry.”

Brewery news USA, PA: Coven Brewing plans to open in Pittsburgh in early 2022
Taking over for a staple in the Pittsburgh beer community is no easy task. But if there was anyone up for it, Trevor Greer and Caiti Sullivan are ready. For years, the two have been in working in the craft beer industry, including at the popular and recently expanded Dancing Gnome brewery in Sharpsburg, the Pittsburgh City Paper reported on December 1.

And now, they are opening a new brewery in early 2022. Coven Brewing will be run by Greer and Sullivan and it will be taking over the Roundabout Brewery space in Lawrenceville. (Roundabout will still be open during the transition.) Pittsburgh City Paper corresponded over email with Greer and Sullivan on the new space, their plans for the future, and what it means to be a part of the Lawrenceville community.

Coven is entering a crowded and thriving Pittsburgh craft beer scene. What is your plan to stand out, and what are you hoping to achieve opening up your own space?

Greer and Sullivan: We’re thrilled to be part of the Pittsburgh craft beer community. As equal-opportunity drinkers, we find inspiration anywhere from classic beer styles to a wide range of flavor profiles found in beverages, including spirits, cocktails, wine, cider, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Chainline Brewing opening a new location early next year
Chainline Brewing is opening a new location early next year. The award-winning brewery will open Chainline Station along the Cross Kirkland Corridor, very near the spot where the company opened its original brewery and taproom about five years ago, the Washington Beer Blog reported on December 1.

Chainline Station is part of an expansion project at the city’s Feriton Spur Park. Along with a taproom, which will actually be in a real caboose, the project includes a new 16-foot wide paved trail, a pickleball court, urban farm, splash area, amphitheater, and more. Trains are the theme at Feriton Spur Park, offering a nod to the role the railway played in Kirkland’s past.

In August of 2020, Chainline Brewing opened a new taproom in the Kirkland Urban Center, a mixed-use, commercial-residential development in downtown Kirkland. Chainline Station will bring the brewery’s beers closer to its original home along the heavily used Cross Kirkland Corridor trail.

Whisky news Japan: Suntory announces whisky price hikes starting next spring
Whisky is on the rise as a popular drink throughout the world, and while that might mean that there are more people than ever to enjoy a glass with, it also means there’s more demand. Unfortunately, in Japan that means a whisky can completely sell out or disappear because the demand completely outstrips the supply. Or, in a different effect of insufficient demand, whisky makers increase their prices, the Japan Today reported on December 2.

In fact, Japanese drink manufacturer Suntory has announced that starting next spring, they’ll be increasing domestic prices of some of their in-house and imported whiskies by up to 28 percent. Suntory has been investing in additional casks and storage warehouses in recent years in order to meet the increasing demand for whisky, but they still haven’t been able to keep up with the rising demand for some of their products.

As such, the company has decided to increase the domestic prices of 31 different products from eight brands of whisky they produce and import, with the hopes of using the profits as capital to increase distilling capabilities and storage capacity. Prices will rise by between five and 28 percent. The brands affected are Suntory’s Hibiki, Yamazaki, Shirasu, ...More info on site
