UK: Carlsberg to close and sell London Fields Brewery
|
Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company has closed London Fields Brewery with the intention of selling the business just four years after buying it, The Caterer reported on December 8.
A statement posted on the London Fields Brewery website said: "It is with regret that we have taken a difficult decision and propose to close London Fields Brewery with a view to selling the business and finding new owners.
"We will close our taproom and e-commerce platforms and pause onsite brewing immediately… As you can imagine, this is a difficult time for the team and we are focusing on looking after each other, as well as our customers, partners and friends in the community."
It also said it was "hopeful" the brewery would reopen "in the near future if a sale is agreed".
Carlsberg UK bought London Fields Brewery in 2017 and operated the business in a joint venture with Brooklyn Brewery. At the time, the group said investment would be made to re-introduce brewing at its original home under the Hackney railway arches and to upgrade its taproom and events space.
London Fields Brewery was founded in Hackney in 2011.

Russia: Brewers warn against introduction of mandatory labelling in September
|
In Russia, from September 2022, beer supply disruptions may begin, its price rise and the growth of the illegal market are possible due to the introduction of mandatory labelling, RBC writes with reference to the Association of Beer Producers (unites AB InBev Efes, Carlsberg-owned Baltika and Heineken).
According to manufacturers, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has set unrealistic terms for the introduction of labelling.
However, the issue of the coexistence of two systems has not yet been resolved – the Unified State Automated Information System (EGAIS) and labeling, since regulators have repeatedly stated that the market will work with only one. Manufacturers believe that in nine months, suppliers of specialized equipment for the introduction of marking will not be able to meet the needs of the Russian market. In addition, it will take a long time to install and test equipment by brewers.
“It is especially worth considering the factor that there are no suitable technical solutions for marking certain types of packaging, for example, aluminum cans,” the APT added.
The implementation of the project to introduce beer labeling can also lead to an increase in the final prices for the product and, subsequently, to the growth of the illegal market.

Ireland: Heineken Ireland proposes to take full control of Comans Beverages Limited
|
Heineken Ireland has put forward a proposal to take over sole control of an Irish drinks company behind beers such as Dutch Gold, The Journal reported on December 6.
A spokesperson for Heineken Ireland confirmed that it has agreed terms to acquire remaining control over Comans Beverages Limited, of which it already holds 25% of shares.
Until now, Heineken has been the minority shareholder of the company, but it could soon have sole control over the venture if plans submitted to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission are approved.
The Heineken spokesperson said: “This is consistent with the provisions of the agreement that established the JV [joint venture] in 2016 and would complete the phased purchase of this business.”
Comans Beverages supplies beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks to hospitality and retail in Ireland. Along with Dutch Gold, it distributes brands like Prazky, Druids cider and Karpackie.
It is majority owned by the Comans, with Geoffrey Coman currently holding 50% of the shares and Thomas Coman holding 25%, according to its latest annual return filed in July. Heineken Ireland Ltd owns the other 25% at the moment.
The company made a profit of €125,627 in the year to the end of 2019,

France: Winter barley area estimated to have increased for harvest 2022
|
France's farm ministry on December 7 estimated the country's winter soft wheat area for the 2022 harvest at 4.92 million hectares, down from 4.96 million hectares the previous year, Nasdaq reported.
In its first sowing estimates for next year's harvest, the ministry pegged the winter barley area at 1.23 million hectares, up from 1.20 million hectares the prior year, and projected the winter rapeseed area would rise to 1.10 million hectares from 0.98 million hectares.
For winter durum wheat, farmers were expected to sow about 279,000 hectares, down from 284,000 hectares the previous year.
Wheat and rapeseed in France are almost exclusively winter crops, while barley production comprises a significant share of spring crop.
Traders and analysts have anticipated a sharp rise in France's rapeseed area, as record prices encourage a rebound in sowing following a decline in recent years.
However, the ministry said its rapeseed area projection for 2022 remained well below an average of 1.2 million hectares for the 2017-2021 period.
Analysts have also expected the recovery in rapeseed to curb cereal planting, although attractive prices and favourable autumn weather were seen limiting any decline in wheat and barley.
Maize is seen as more likely to lose area during spring planting, partly as farmers turn

Australia: Malting barley exports jump 153% in October
|
Australia exported 82,851 tonnes of malting barley, 349,288 tonnes of feed barley and 297,601 tonnes of sorghum in October, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The malting figure surprised by jumping 153 per cent from the 32,729 tonnes shipped in September, while the feed barley number is down 32pc from the September total of 512,617 tonnes.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said Thailand was again notable in its absence from the list of feed barley customers, likely a function of its own corn harvest hitting the bins in August-September.
“We should see some improvement into Q4 2021 and Q1 2022,” Mr Roache said.
“Thai demand for barley does carry some new risk going forward, with the continuing competitiveness of feed wheat eating into the attractiveness of barley in that country; the same can be said for The Philippines and Vietnam.”
However, a strong export program on Australian feed barley showed no sign of letting up in October.
“Japan and Saudi Arabia continuing to dominate the space as we have seen all year, and Oman, Vietnam and The Philippines continue to contribute to demand.”
Mr Roache said November shipments could see a reduction in volume, the result of rain and cool

UK: Whisky prices set to triple next year due to supply chain crisis
|
The best single malt whiskies are set to triple in price next year due to the worst supply chain crisis in the industry’s history, the Daily Record reported on December 5.
Experts have warned Brexit, the pandemic and soaring demand have resulted in a “perfect storm” hitting Scotland’s prized £5 billion dram export market.
There are fears it could leave distilleries struggling to meet global demand over the festive season and lead to years of price rises.
The Sunday Mail found a bottle of 16-year-old Lagavulin – a favourite Christmas present – has rocketed by £10 since this time last year.
Dawn Davies, head buyer at The Whisky Exchange, one of the world’s biggest sellers of fine malts, said: “During lockdown distilleries weren’t able to get liquid into casks.
“It’s going to be very interesting what happens in the next 10 or 15 years because there is going to be a massive shortfall.
“The other issue is that absolutely everything – because of Brexit and Covid – is taking a hell of a long time.
“Sales have gone up, people haven’t forecasted correctly and there are huge issues trying to get glass, caps, cork – things you wouldn’t even think about.
“Everything along the supply chain is taking
