Canada, ON: Waterloo Brewing announces Q3 financial results
|
Waterloo Brewing Ltd., Ontario's first craft brewery, announced on December 9 financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2022 which ended on October 31, 2021. Waterloo Brewing reported EBITDA of C$4.3 million, an increase of C$0.3 million or 7.4% over the prior year, on net revenue of C$26.9 million. Net revenue increased by C$4.1 million or 17.8% from the third quarter of fiscal 2021.
"I am encouraged with our third quarter results. Despite industry-wide beer category softness, supply chain challenges and inflationary cost pressures, we continue to deliver top line growth to the business. Our co-manufacturing business continues to exhibit healthy growth and we are expecting to close the year off on a strong note," said George Croft, President and Chief Executive Officer of Waterloo Brewing.
The total volume of the company's owner brand products was flat versus the year prior compared to an industry volume decline of 4.2% in the third quarter of fiscal 2022. LandShark® continues to perform exceedingly well with growth of 49% during the third quarter. In-case promotions are attracting new consumers to the premium brand and fueling the growth of the new LandShark® Seltzer brands, which were introduced in the first quarter of fiscal 2022

USA, OH: Hi-Wire Brewing opening a Greater Cincinnati location
|
A North Carolina-based brewery is opening a Greater Cincinnati location, part of the brand's first expansion into Ohio, Cincinnati.com reported on December 9.
Hi-Wire Brewing, which is based in Asheville, will open a brewery and taproom at Factory 52 in Norwood, the former site of the US Playing Card factory. Construction has already begun, and the location is expected to open in the fall.
“We have had a lot of success in other markets when we purposefully partner with developers that are already committed to reuse,” Chris Frosaker, Hi-Wire co-owner said in a release. “We primarily seek campus-style locations in neighborhoods that are up-and-coming; so Factory 52 is just a great fit for our organization.”
To open in Norwood, the brewery is working with PLK Communities.
Cincinnati will be Hi-Wire's first Ohio location. In addition to several around North Carolina, Hi-Wire has locations in Louisville and Knoxville, Tennessee.
Once open, Factory 52 will feature a food hall, boutique retail shops, residences, a dog park, an Aces Pickleball complex and a public courtyard. The Hi-Wire taproom will be a multi-level design, with a 5,800-square-foot primary space featuring a bar with 24 taps and an outdoor patio. The 3,780-square-foot rooftop deck and 12-tap secondary bar will occupy

USA, MD: Hub City Brewing planning to open in Hagerstown soon
|
David Blackmon is familiar with Hagerstown from over the years, and perhaps the idea of starting a business here might not have always been appealing.
In fact, Blackmon said he probably would have declined a business deal in the city five to 10 years ago.
But something seems different now, the Herald-Mail Media reported on December 9.
The Brunswick, Md., brewery owner, who is planning to open Hub City Brewing in Hagerstown where he will also serve his products, thought about changes happening in the city:
The Hagerstown Cultural Trail, an art- and history-themed walking trail connecting Hagerstown City Park and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts to downtown
Commercial space in the city is being gobbled up
A planned 5,000-seat stadium at Summit Avenue and West Antietam Street that will primarily serve as a minor league baseball park. Blackmon said it's a "big statement" for Hagerstown, especially since the state has already approved allocation of up to $59.5 million in bonds to pay for it.
"There's definitely energy in the air," Blackmon said of Hagerstown. "Really good vibe."
Blackmon and his son, Jake, recently talked about their plans for their brewery, distillery, winery and cidery at the City Farmers Market property at 25 W. Church St.

USA, OH: The Lebanon Brewing Company to occupy an old fire department station in Lebanon

USA, CA: Antigua Brewing putting finishing touches on its new brewhouse in San Luis Obispo
|
The corner of Osos and Monterey streets in downtown San Luis Obispo is about to start pumping with amber libations and a full-service restaurant, the New Times San Luis Obispo reported on December 9.
Locals Chris and Bambi Banys are putting the finishing touches on their new brewhouse, slated to open in mid-January. The 3,500-square-foot space replaces Mexican restaurant Qué Pasa at 1009 Monterey St.
Aptly named Antigua, the brewery abuts two historic buildings—the art deco Fremont Theater, built in 1941, and the Sperry Building, originally constructed in 1898 and currently housing Mo's Smokehouse BBQ and Woodstock's Pizza.
"To us, [the name Antigua] conjures the idea of old-fashioned artistry and personal dedication to craft, and evokes the connection modern San Luis Obispo has to its historic roots," Bambi said.
"We designed our own logo, with help from a professional graphic artist. The image is a golden hop, rising like the sun over San Luis Obispo," she said. "The idea is that of a glorious new age of beer dawning over the Central Coast."
Antigua may evoke images of times past, but the facility is a new-age marvel. During the past two years, passersby may have noticed extensive construction, from craning a steam-powered boiler to the

USA, CO: McClellan's Brewing Company serves up its last ale
|
A Fort Collins brewery has served up its last ale, The Coloradoan reported on December 9.
McClellan's Brewing Company, which opened in 2015 and brought cask ales to Campus West, closed its small brewery and restaurant at 1035 S. Taft Hill Road on Nov. 27, according to McClellan's financial backer Tom Landi.
While it was able to weather much of the COVID-19 pandemic, McClellan's once again saw business drop off after COVID-19 cases increased late this summer and fall, prompting another countywide mask mandate in October, according to Landi, whose son was one of the brewery's co-owners.
The latest COVID-19 surge, paired with rising inflation costs, was the final straw for the brewery.
"With inflation issues, a lot of disposable income people had to go out to restaurants, they just don't have it anymore," Landi said.
The closure comes after what Landi said were some good first few years for the brewery. Nearly two years after its 2015 opening, McClellan's hired Scottish brewer Graeme Hirstwood to man the ship of its cask ales, a European-style ale that uses natural carbonation.
It also found success with weekly events, like its popular Geeks Who Drink trivia night and an open mic night.
"We were doing pretty well, then

India: United Breweries challenges Competition Commission of India’s penalty before appellate tribunal NCLAT
|
Beer maker United Breweries Ltd (UBL) has approached the appellate tribunal NCLAT against Rs 751.8 crore penalty imposed on the company by the fair trade regulator CCI, The Economic Times reported on December 8.
The Competition Commission of India on September 24, 2021, imposed a fine of Rs 751.8 crore for alleged cartelisation in the sale and supply of beer.
"The company has now filed an appeal before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the CCI order dated September 24, 2021," said UBL in a regulatory update.
The NCLAT is the appellate authority over the CCI. It hears appeals against any direction issued or decision made or order passed by CCI.
Earlier in October, UBL, which is now controlled by Dutch-based multinational Heineken, had said it was in process of preparing the grounds of the appeal, which was expected to be filed within two months from the date of order.
On the basis of the legal advise "the company believes that it has a strong case on merits for successful appeal on this matter", UBL had said on October 27, in post earning statement for July-September quarter.
Earlier this year, Heineken had acquired additional ordinary shares in UBL on June 23 taking its shareholding

Poland: Parliament mulling yet another increase in excise duty on beer
|
Just a few days after the adoption of the act increasing the excise duty on beer by 10 percent from the new year and by another 28 percent over the next five years, Poland’s MPs began work on another project assuming an increase in excise duty on sweetened flavored beers, the Spark Chronicles reported on December 10.
According to industry representatives, it will lead to an increase in beer prices and a further decline in its consumption. And this will impact not only breweries, mainly smaller ones, but also farmers and small shops that live off selling beer.
“Last year we were surprised by the pandemic, which caused a few percent of the market decline. This year, despite the fact that we were counting on a rebound, we faced an even deeper decline. We have lower sales than last year – the decline is over 5 percent compared to 2020. Beer consumption in Poland is at the lowest levels in the last 10 years: over 3.5 million hectolitres of beer disappeared from the market in three years,” said Bartłomiej Morzycki, general director of the Union of Brewing Industry Employers – Polish Breweries.
“This year the brewing industry was surprised by a sudden

Myanmar & Japan: Dispute between Kirin and military-backed Myanmar company to be settled based on law – investment minister
|
Aung Naing Oo, Myanmar's investment and foreign economic relations minister, says a dispute between Japanese brewer Kirin Holdings and a company backed by the Myanmar military will be settled based on the law, The Nikkei Asia reported on December 10.
Everything will "go along with the laws," and the government is monitoring the progress of the issue between the two parties, the minister told Nikkei and other media outlets in an online news conference on December 7. Maung Maung Ohn, Myanmar's information minister, also took part in the interview. Both ministers were appointed by the military after it seized power from the civilian-led government in February.
"We are encouraging both parties to settle this issue amicably, but if that does not happen, that will be [settled], according to the law," Aung Naing Oo said.
At issue is the fate of Myanmar Brewery, which is jointly operated by Kirin and Myanmar Economic Holdings (MEHL). Kirin decided to unwind the partnership after the Myanmar military took control of the country in February. The joint venture is owned 51% by Kirin, while MEHL holds the rest.
Kirin asked MEHL to sell its stake, but negotiations between the two have gone nowhere. MEHL filed a request with a

Belgium: Belgian nuns start brewing beer
|
When the nuns of Maredret Abbey in Belgium were struggling to scrape together the funds for badly needed renovation works, they turned to an occupation that for hundreds of years had been the preserve of monks: beer-brewing, Reuters reported on December 10.
The 20-strong Benedictine community, founded in 1893, decided about five years ago it was time to team up with a brewer with the aim of to producing beer infused with some of their history and values while helping repair their convent's leaking roofs and cracked walls.
After nearly three years of collaboration with brewer and importer John Martin, Maredret Altus, a 6.8% amber beer using cloves and juniper berries, and Maredret Triplus, an 8% blond incorporating coriander and sage, went on sale in summer.
"It's good for one's health. It aids digestion. All the sisters like the beer, we are in Belgium after all," said Sister Gertrude, adding the nuns allowed themselves one bottle each on Sundays.
The beers are based on spelt, a grain mentioned in texts by Saint Hildegard, a German Benedictine abbess from the 11th century who has inspired the Belgian order, along with plants commonly grown in the nuns' garden.

Australia: Largest beer manufacturers rationing most popular canned beer in lead-up to Christmas
|
One of Australia’s largest beer manufacturers has been rationing its most popular canned beer in the lead-up to Christmas, amid supply chain issues due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Guardian reported on December 10.
Shortages of wooden pallets and aluminium respectively have hit Australia’s two beer giants, Lion and Carlton & United Breweries (CUB).
But people craving a cold one on Christmas Day shouldn’t panic, with the industry pouring cold water on talk of major shortages over summer.
CUB says while it is not facing shortages of kegs or its Australian-brewed stubbies or cans, the company recently had to limit the sale of some items due to aluminium shortages.
“To be clear, we are not facing shortages of VB, Carlton Draught, Great Northern, Carlton Dry, or Pure Blonde,” sales director Peter Bingeman said in a statement to Guardian Australia.
“Recently we had limited the sale of our most popular canned beer for a short time due to aluminium shortages, but those shortages have been successfully managed.”
Purchase limits introduced on various CUB products at alcohol retailer BWS are anticipated to be lifted by the middle of next week.
Bingeman said there were international supply chain issues for the Mexican beer Corona, which is imported by CUB.
“However, we
