India: United Breweries to introduce brands from Heineken’s global portfolio
|
United Breweries (UBL) is planning to introduce brands from the global portfolio of Heineken, the Dutch multinational, which now owns a majority stake, Udaipurkiran.com reported on December 12.
Besides, the company would continue to drive the mainstream portions through a category penetration share gain route, which contributes a larger chunk of the business. The company is seeing beer consumption back in line with pre-pandemic levels.
Earlier this year, Heineken had acquired additional ordinary shares in UBL on June 23, taking its shareholding in the company from 46.5 per cent to 61.5 per cent.
United Breweries is the maker of Kingfisher beer and Heineken beer in India.

UK: Budweiser Brewing Group announces new ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2040
|
Budweiser Brewing Group, part of AB InBev, has announced that its UK breweries are aiming to have net zero operations in 2026, as part of a new global ambition to achieve net zero across its value chain by 2040, the Renewable Energy Magazine reported on December 13.
AB InBev aims to brew the world’s most sustainable beers and the brewer has already made significant progress towards its global 2025 Sustainability Goals. Between 2017 and 2020, absolute GHG emissions in its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) have been reduced by nearly 25 percent and value chain emissions (Scopes 1, 2, 3) reduced by over 10 percent per hectoliter.
Its European business is contributing towards the company’s new ambition to have net zero operations in five major breweries in 2028, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 110,740 tonnes, equivalent to the emissions of almost 35,000 cars. The UK business, Budweiser Brewing Group is set to be the first to meet this target with its Magor and Salmesbury breweries.
Budweiser Brewing Group already brews every single can, bottle and keg in the UK with 100% renewable electricity from its own wind turbine and two solar farms. The brewer has also removed plastic rings from its entire portfolio

North America: Barley crop down this year due to sharply lower yields brought on by heat and drought
|
The North American barley crop declined in both the United States and Canada in 2021, driven primarily by sharply lower yields brought on by heat and drought on both sides of the border, The New Brewer reported.
The total crop in North America was down by around one-third compared to 2020 totals (which were revised up in both the U.S. and Canada).
U.S. crop decline was driven by both decreased harvested acres as well as decreased yields, whereas the Canadian decline was driven exclusively by sharply lower yields.
Canadian harvested acres actually increased, and this year represented the largest harvested geographic area since 2008. Though the United States saw a decline in the percentage of planted and harvested acres, it increased slightly in terms of total production, up to 26.4 percent of the crop compared to 25.7 percent.
Early reports suggest quality issues and the potential for higher protein levels in malt in the coming year. High protein levels can pose challenges to brewers in the form of low extract levels, reduced shelf life, and haze formation.

China: Chinese buyers making large purchases of French and Ukrainian wheat and barley
|
Chinese buyers have been making large purchases of French wheat and barley along with Ukrainian corn and barley in the last week, trade sources said, taking advantage of a pause in surging prices to cover some of their feed grain needs, Reuters reported on December 10.
While the total volumes bought were not yet clear, the sources said importers had secured at least several hundred thousand tonnes of grain from France and Ukraine.
The Chinese buyers also made major purchases of Australian feed wheat that again represented at least several hundred thousand tonnes, some of the sources added.
The deals point to China’s continued major grain import requirement, despite the arrival of its domestic corn crop and difficulties in its pig industry, and further illustrate the readiness of buyers to seize on falls in international prices.
Wheat futures soared to a nine-year high in the United States and a record peak in Europe last month, fuelled by concern about rain damage to Australia’s harvest and Russian export curbs, before retreating sharply since last week.
For French wheat, buyers were understood to have booked between six and 10 vessels, or potentially up to 600,000 tonnes, for shipment mainly between January and March, six traders said.

Mexico & USA: Mexico buys 54.4% of US’ barley and barley products exported in 2020/21
|
The craft beer industry in Mexico has grown tenfold in just four years due in large part to the U.S. Grains Council’s (USGC’s) trade servicing efforts and its continuing push to capitalize on Mexican consumer demand to benefit those U.S. barley farmers who supply the industry.
Cristina Barba, general director of Mexico’s Craft Brewers Association (ACERMEX), revealed this growth statistic at the Mexico Beer Congress in late October, AG Information Network reported on December 13.
Mexico sustained its ranking as the top market for U.S. barley and barley products in 2020/2021, totaling 412,000 metric tonnes (18.9 million bushels). The nation purchased over half (54.4%) of the U.S. barley and barley products exported this marketing year.
Although small, the craft brewing industry in Mexico is growing, and while it may not reach the size of the commercial beer industry, it does use malt in a larger proportion. Logistically, connecting Mexican brewers with U.S. malt producers will create greater opportunities since shipments arrive via truck instead of vessels.

Ukraine: Barley exports to-date total 7.9 mln tonnes
|
Ukraine has exported 28.3 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up almost 21% from the same stage a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on December 13.
That included 15 million tonnes of wheat, 5 million tonnes of barley and 7.9 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.9 million tonnes of grain in clean weight this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 62.4 million tonnes from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The government has said that grain exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
