Barley news North America: Barley crop down this year due to sharply lower yields brought on by heat and drought
The North American barley crop declined in both the United States and Canada in 2021, driven primarily by sharply lower yields brought on by heat and drought on both sides of the border, The New Brewer reported.

The total crop in North America was down by around one-third compared to 2020 totals (which were revised up in both the U.S. and Canada).

U.S. crop decline was driven by both decreased harvested acres as well as decreased yields, whereas the Canadian decline was driven exclusively by sharply lower yields.

Canadian harvested acres actually increased, and this year represented the largest harvested geographic area since 2008. Though the United States saw a decline in the percentage of planted and harvested acres, it increased slightly in terms of total production, up to 26.4 percent of the crop compared to 25.7 percent.

Early reports suggest quality issues and the potential for higher protein levels in malt in the coming year. High protein levels can pose challenges to brewers in the form of low extract levels, reduced shelf life, and haze formation.

In its Small Grains 2021 Summary released September 30, the USDA/National Agricultural Statistics Service estimated U.S. barley production at 118 million bushels, down 31 ...More info on site

Barley news Mexico & USA: Mexico buys 54.4% of US’ barley and barley products exported in 2020/21
The craft beer industry in Mexico has grown tenfold in just four years due in large part to the U.S. Grains Council’s (USGC’s) trade servicing efforts and its continuing push to capitalize on Mexican consumer demand to benefit those U.S. barley farmers who supply the industry.

Cristina Barba, general director of Mexico’s Craft Brewers Association (ACERMEX), revealed this growth statistic at the Mexico Beer Congress in late October, AG Information Network reported on December 13.

Mexico sustained its ranking as the top market for U.S. barley and barley products in 2020/2021, totaling 412,000 metric tonnes (18.9 million bushels). The nation purchased over half (54.4%) of the U.S. barley and barley products exported this marketing year.

Although small, the craft brewing industry in Mexico is growing, and while it may not reach the size of the commercial beer industry, it does use malt in a larger proportion. Logistically, connecting Mexican brewers with U.S. malt producers will create greater opportunities since shipments arrive via truck instead of vessels.

“Mexico’s craft brewers’ market is a new market that is growing,” said Javier Chavez, USGC marketing specialist in Mexico. “By taking advantage of the proximity to the U.S., we want to connect the brewers to U.S. malt producers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Big Ditch Brewing Company planning production brewery in downtown Buffalo
A popular Buffalo brewery says it is planning on opening a production brewery on Oak Street in downtown Buffalo, WKBW reported on December 10.

The new production brewery will allow Big Ditch to utilize its facility on East Huron Street to become an 'innovation brewery'.

“Innovation is paramount for success in the craft beer industry,” stated Matt Kahn, President and Co-founder of Big Ditch Brewing Company. “However, our desire to innovate new products is competing with the need to brew our signature and seasonal beers due to the growth in demand for these products; growth that has continued throughout the pandemic”, added Kahn. “The opening of the new Production Brewery will free up capacity at our current brewery for innovation while allowing us to keep pace with demand for our signature and seasonal beers.”

The new brewery will have more than twice the production capacity of the current brewery, including a 40-barrel brewhouse and 10 x 80-barrel fermenters.

There will be no retail operations at the new brewery.

Brewery news USA, MI: Ogma Brewing Co. already open in Jackson
Andrew Volk doesn’t mind how long it took for Ogma Brewing Co. to open, MLive.com reported on December 11.

Volk owns the brewery with brothers Troy and Kevin Craft. They opened for business on Wednesday, Nov. 24.

“There are always going to obstacles. We sure had our fair share of them,” Volk said. “We learned a lot through it. The timing is exactly the way it was meant to be.”

Opening night was a success.

“It was incredible,” Volk said. “It was just so nice to finally have people in here.”

The brewery currently has six beers on tap but have a 12 tap system and will build up to that. The kitchen is slated to open on Saturday, Dec. 18. They also offer to go cans of beer.

“We are offering a cozy, little intimate environment with good music and low lights,” Volk said. The interior is a work in progress with a lot of space on the walls to be filled, Volk said.

Volk said when the kitchen opens, it will be “small but mighty.” Five to six entrees and a few appetizers are planned.

Ogma Brewing Co., 129 E. Michigan Ave. in Jackson, is open noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and noon to midnight ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Lolev Brewing Co. to debut in Lawrenceville some time next year
When it came to branding their new venture, Ted and Scott Slesinski made sure to stay true to their home brewing roots along with their sense of humor, WPXI reported on December 10.

So when they debut their Lolev Brewing Co. at 5257 Butler St. in Lawrenceville some time next year, they’ll do so seeking to graduate from what started as a “lower level operation” as amateur brewers into a new craft brewery whose ambition can be measured in a new 20-barrel system.

“We wanted to shorten the name,” said Ted Slesinski of “Lower Level” becoming Lolev.

A native of Connecticut and who previously worked in tech, Slesinski said the goal is to produce a broad range of different kinds of beer at Lolev.

Brewery news USA, PA: Monaca Brewing Co. targets spring opening as Monaca’s first craft brewpub
Plans call for Monaca to get its first craft brewpub in 2022, the Beaver County Times reported on December 13.

Monaca Brewing Co. targets a mid- to late-spring opening at 1030 Pennsylvania Ave.

"We've got our brewery license and all the equipment is ordered and should be arriving in late-January," co-owner Norm Ely said.

Pouring a variety of brewed-on-site beers, Monaca Brewing will be in the former Fergie's Vape Shop that closed about three years ago. Next door is Steve & Benny's Chicken Shack, which will deliver its menu items to customers seated at Monaca Brewing.

"Their menu is going to be revamped for this when we open," Ely said.

Steve Gates, co-founder of Steve & Benny's Chicken Shack, is an ownership partner in Monaca Brewing, along with Ambridge Manager Mario Leone, who formerly served as Monaca's borough manager.

Leone and lifetime Monaca resident Ely, franchise owner-operator of Bruster's Real Ice Cream in Hopewell Township, bought several empty storefronts in Monaca, eager to be part of the budding revitalization of the downtown.

"If Monaca has something going on, the town is going to come out and support it," Ely, a former Monaca Council president, said. "We just want to see Monaca grow and flourish."

Brewery news USA, RI: Pivotal Brewing Company opens in former US Rubber Company mill complex
By World War II, more than 4,000 people were employed by the United States Rubber Company, led by industrialist Samuel P. Colt, where wire for portable communications and heavier wire for ships and tanks was produced. The company’s plant on Wood Street was expanding at the time, from its two-story hipped roof structure to a complex for the rubber company, The Boston Globe reported on December 10.

The slogan “Wire to Win the War” was splashed nearly everywhere locally, and made that factory hum as the largest rubber company in the nation. Of course, like many industrial complexes and mills throughout Rhode Island, it also met its demise.

The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation took over the property in the late 1950s, only for technical advances in manufacturing to streamline production, and ultimately closed the complex’s doors in 1977.

The U.S. Rubber Company is now owned by Michelin, and the site has had a number of redevelopment proposals in industries related to health care, education, and recreation in the years since.

But when Todd Nicholson and Rebecca Ernst drove by the complex, now called Unity Park, on a Sunday in 2019, they decided to stop and peer through the windows. They saw 40-foot ceilings, ...More info on site

Barley news China: Chinese buyers making large purchases of French and Ukrainian wheat and barley
Chinese buyers have been making large purchases of French wheat and barley along with Ukrainian corn and barley in the last week, trade sources said, taking advantage of a pause in surging prices to cover some of their feed grain needs, Reuters reported on December 10.

While the total volumes bought were not yet clear, the sources said importers had secured at least several hundred thousand tonnes of grain from France and Ukraine.

The Chinese buyers also made major purchases of Australian feed wheat that again represented at least several hundred thousand tonnes, some of the sources added.

The deals point to China’s continued major grain import requirement, despite the arrival of its domestic corn crop and difficulties in its pig industry, and further illustrate the readiness of buyers to seize on falls in international prices.

Wheat futures soared to a nine-year high in the United States and a record peak in Europe last month, fuelled by concern about rain damage to Australia’s harvest and Russian export curbs, before retreating sharply since last week.

For French wheat, buyers were understood to have booked between six and 10 vessels, or potentially up to 600,000 tonnes, for shipment mainly between January and March, six traders said.

Brewery news India: United Breweries to introduce brands from Heineken’s global portfolio
United Breweries (UBL) is planning to introduce brands from the global portfolio of Heineken, the Dutch multinational, which now owns a majority stake, Udaipurkiran.com reported on December 12.

Besides, the company would continue to drive the mainstream portions through a category penetration share gain route, which contributes a larger chunk of the business. The company is seeing beer consumption back in line with pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier this year, Heineken had acquired additional ordinary shares in UBL on June 23, taking its shareholding in the company from 46.5 per cent to 61.5 per cent.

United Breweries is the maker of Kingfisher beer and Heineken beer in India.

Brewery news UK: Budweiser Brewing Group announces new ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2040
Budweiser Brewing Group, part of AB InBev, has announced that its UK breweries are aiming to have net zero operations in 2026, as part of a new global ambition to achieve net zero across its value chain by 2040, the Renewable Energy Magazine reported on December 13.

AB InBev aims to brew the world’s most sustainable beers and the brewer has already made significant progress towards its global 2025 Sustainability Goals. Between 2017 and 2020, absolute GHG emissions in its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) have been reduced by nearly 25 percent and value chain emissions (Scopes 1, 2, 3) reduced by over 10 percent per hectoliter.

Its European business is contributing towards the company’s new ambition to have net zero operations in five major breweries in 2028, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 110,740 tonnes, equivalent to the emissions of almost 35,000 cars. The UK business, Budweiser Brewing Group is set to be the first to meet this target with its Magor and Salmesbury breweries.

Budweiser Brewing Group already brews every single can, bottle and keg in the UK with 100% renewable electricity from its own wind turbine and two solar farms. The brewer has also removed plastic rings from its entire portfolio ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports to-date total 7.9 mln tonnes
Ukraine has exported 28.3 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up almost 21% from the same stage a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on December 13.

That included 15 million tonnes of wheat, 5 million tonnes of barley and 7.9 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.

Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.9 million tonnes of grain in clean weight this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 62.4 million tonnes from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.

The government has said that grain exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.

Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.
