Hops news New Zealand & USA & Canada: NZ Hops Ltd. and Charles Faram Inc. announce partnership to facilitate supply of New Zealand hops in North America
NZ Hops Ltd. and Charles Faram Inc. (CFI) jointly announced a new partnership to facilitate supply of NZ Hops from the co-op’s 25 growers to brewers in North America. Creating the first fully-integrated, grower-direct supply chain for NZH, the partnership offers brewers the benefits of a grower-direct supplier relationship with the convenience of having logistical and sales support managed in the United States and Canada.

Commenting on the new partnership, NZ Hops CEO Craig Orr said: “Our partnership reflects NZH’s ongoing effort to address the three important needs of our customers: Quality, security of supply, and cost. This partnership creates a viable and sustainable feedback loop between the customer and the farms, as well as greatly simplified and responsive logistics.”

This partnership combines the capabilities of both NZ Hops and CFI to deliver better value to the brewer. Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario cutting LCO wholesale prices for bars and restaurants, freezing the basic beer tax rate
Ontario is cutting LCBO wholesale prices for bars and restaurants, enabling curbside pickup of beer, wine and cider from licensed grocery stores, and freezing the basic beer tax rate, Baytoday reported on December 15.

"The government is supporting bars, restaurants and other businesses with a licence to operate a liquor consumption premises by cutting wholesale prices for the alcohol they purchase from the LCBO, saving these businesses an effective 20 per cent when compared to retail prices," according to a news release. "This change will provide approximately C$60 million in annual support to restaurants, bars and other businesses."

“A permanent wholesale discount will put about $60 million a year back into these important businesses, so they can invest in themselves and their workers,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance.

The government has also frozen the basic beer tax rates that were set to be indexed to inflation on March 1, 2022 to support beer and craft beer brewers to recover and grow, and to save consumers money. The beer basic tax rates are prescribed amounts of tax added to beer sold in Ontario. The rates adjust annually based on the Consumer Price Index. The government is freezing the beer tax rates until March ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Suffolk Punch Brewing to open its second location in Charlotte
Charlotte’s SouthPark mall said it is planning a “transformational” multimillion dollar plaza project that will include a Charlotte brewery’s expansion, greenspace and inclusive children’s play area, the Charlotte Observer reported on December 15.

Suffolk Punch Brewing, which opened in 2017 in South End, will open its second location with a beer garden and taproom in the revamped West Plaza, near Dick’s Sporting Goods and The Container Store, SouthPark mall owner Simon said Wednesday.

The brewery will be atop a greenspace where Suffolk Punch Brewing and SouthPark will offer family-friendly performances on stage throughout the year, according to the mall’s news release.

“Charlotte-area shoppers expect first-class amenities, and that is exactly what this transformational redevelopment at SouthPark will deliver,” mall general manager Randy Thomas said in a news release on December 15.

Plaza construction will begin early next year. Construction is expected to finish by late summer with the play area and brewery expected to open simultaneously, Holly Roberson Van Cleave, mall director of marketing and business development, told the Observer.

She said there’s a trend for more green space and entertainment space at shopping centers that lends to shoppers staying longer and enjoying different types of events.

Mall officials would not say ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Deadwords Brewing finally set to open in Parramore on December 17
Deadwords Brewing is finally set to open in Parramore on December 17 at 4 p.m., the Bungalower reported.

The 15 BBL brewery was built out in the former Al’s Army Store at 23 N. Orange Blossom Trail [GMap] and will feature a rotating selection of house drafts. They also will have canned 16oz four-packs, limited bottles, and to-go crowlers available for purchase.

The name comes from a 4,000-year-old beer recipe called the “Hymn to Ninkasi,” Ninkasi being the Sumerian goddess of beer. The song is believed to have been written down in 1800 BCE, but is likely much older and is believed to have been passed down through generations of beer makers via oral history traditions. The name is a nod to the civilizations that consumed beer that are no longer around and the dead languages they once spoke.

Deadwords will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, 11 a.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Brewery news USA, CO: FlyteCo Brewing opening its second location at former Stapleton International Airport Control Tower
Colorado-based, aviation-themed brewery FlyteCo Brewing is opening its second location at the former Stapleton International Airport Control Tower, the Craft Brewing Business reported on December 13.

The now defunct Stapleton International Airport previously served as Denver’s central airport before being replaced in 1996 by Denver International Airport. Prior to Punch Bowl Social moving into the building in 2017, it sat vacant for 20 years.

FlyteCo expects to open its brewpub in summer 2022 in the historic building, attached to the iconic 164-foot-tower.

“The decision to pursue and open our second location was very much expedited when this property became available, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we couldn’t be more thrilled about,” said FlyteCo Brewing Co-Owner Morgan O’Sullivan. “Right now, we’re focused on becoming good stewards of the neighborhood where nearby families will feel welcomed at our all-day destination.”

FlyteCo’s background is deeply rooted in aviation – two out of the three owners are pilots and the original brewery features many show-stopping airborne design elements, including a salvaged plane wing and a full-size replication of a Boeing 737 fuselage. Additionally, 10 percent of FlyteCo’s profits benefit the future of aviation through scholarships and donations to youth engagement as well as benefit veteran-focused organizations. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Copperworks Distilling Company expanding to a new location in Kenmore
Seattle-native Copperworks Distilling Company is expanding outside of the Emerald city establishing a new location in Kenmore, the Bothell-Kenmore Reporter reported on December 14.

In downtown Kenmore at what used to be Nine Yards Brewing Company near the Burke-Gilman Trail will be the site of Copperworks Distilling Co.’s new pub, eatery and brewery.

President and Co-founder of Copperworks, Jason Parker, said the decision to expand the business was brought on by a very successful year not only for his company but for the liquor and spirits industry as a whole.

He said the 5,000 square feet of newly acquired space will both expand their capacity for distilling and brewing, even allowing them to brew their own beer, and provide a unique venue for serving locals not only their own beer and spirits but also for exploring food service as well.

While Parker could not say specifically what will be on the menu when the pub opens, he did say Nick Jarvis, a 20-year veteran of the hospitality and restaurant industry who spent seven years opening ventures for Tom Douglas Restaurants, would help launch the eatery, and that the venue’s kitchen would be prepared to serve basically anything Jarvis and the staff could imagine.

“It could ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Georgia-based Hippin’ Hops Brewery coming to Charlotte
Nearly two and a half years after Charlotte said goodbye to its only Black-owned brewery, Clarence Boston says he is bringing his Georgia-based Hippin’ Hops brand to the Queen City this summer, qcity.com reported on December 15.

Boston tells QCity Metro the brewery will open at Bainbridge NoDa on North Davidson Street.

He broke the news via Facebook: “Here we GROW again,” he wrote.

Boston, a serial entrepreneur and investor who once owned Boston’s Mortuary on Statesville Road, left Charlotte in late 2020, frustrated that he could not find a landlord willing to rent to him.

Resettled in Atlanta–Chocolate City, he calls it–Boston opened Hippin’ Hops Brewery & Oyster Bar.

Since then he has opened two more locations and Charlotte will be his fourth.

Boston also is co-owner of Firehouse Bar & Lounge, which sits in the shadow of Bank of America Stadium.

Brewery news USA, MN: Mana Brewing Co. plans to open in downtown Shakopee in spring
A new brewery and taproom is set to move into a recently completed apartment building in downtown Shakopee, The Minneapolis Business Journal reported on December 14.

Mana Brewing Co. plans to open in the spring at 129 Holmes St. S., where it will occupy nearly 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of The Deco, West Fargo, N.D.-based firm Enclave Development's 89-unit apartment building on the former city hall site. A liquor license for the brewery was approved last week by the Shakopee City Council.

Mana Brewing will offer ales and lagers, including six core varieties, rotating seasonal brews, limited releases and other experimental offerings, alongside wood-fired pizza.

"We chose Shakopee for our location for two reasons. The first being a high-growth, booming area; secondly because we love this area, are proud to call it home and want to engage in our community," the brewery says on its website.

Mana Brewing and its CEO, Travis Bechtold, did not respond to requests for comment.

Shakopee already has two other breweries: Shakopee Brewhall and Badger Hill Brewery.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Rocky View Brewing expands to a new taproom and restaurant location
Five years after its launch as a nanobrewery in the southern Alberta community of Bearspaw, Rocky View Brewing has expanded to a new taproom and restaurant location in the nearby town of Cochrane, the Canadian Beer News reported on December 14.

Founded in 2016 by homebrewer Lyle Thorsen and his wife Denean, Rocky View has a focus on “brewing approachable beers to bring an enjoyable experience to a broad range of craft beer enthusiasts.” This is reflected in the brewery’s core line-up which includes Blonde (5.5% abv), Amber (5.2% abv), IPA (5.5% abv), Brown Ale (5% abv), Witbier (4.5% abv), and Pilsner (5% abv).

All six are on tap at the new location alongside new beers, including Kölsch (5% abv) and Pale Ale (5.4% abv), plus several guest taps, wines, and soft drinks.

The food menu by Nia’s Gourmet offers a variety of meal and snack options, including nachos, soups, and sandwiches at lunch, and tapas, salads, and sharing plates at dinner.

While brewing is not currently taking place on site, Thorsen hopes that zoning changes being considered by the city will allow that to change in 2022, at which point small-batch beers brewed exclusively for the taproom will start pouring on a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Slow Down Brewing Co. takes unorthodox path to new brewery
Earlier this month, people crowded around a bar for the opening of one of the newest breweries in Massachusetts, Slow Down Brewing Co., the Worcester Telegram reported on December 14.

The four friends who founded Slow Down tried, but failed to quell their nerves. More people were tasting their beer in one night than in the more than five years of homebrewing that led them here. Mostly positive reviews rolled in, though. And their debut beer, “Agent of Chaos,” an opaque IPA brewed with Simcoe and Bru-1 hops, sold out in two hours.

All in all, the night resembled a successful brewery opening in every way save for one: the brewery.

Unlike 99% of new breweries in the state, Slow Down has opened without a taproom or even what you would think of as a typical commercial brewery. The address on their farmer-brewer license leads you to the two-car garage attached to co-founder Bryan Wrenn’s Whitinsville home.

Instead, Slow Down hopes to gradually build buzz for its beer through draft sales at restaurants and bars around the state known for their epic tap lists, with the goal to find a taproom in Central Massachusetts somewhere down the line. For ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Barley crop estimated down 14.2% this year
The United Kingdom's wheat harvest this year rose to 13.99 million tonnes, up 44.8% from the previous season, Britain's farming ministry said on December 16.

The estimate was marginally down from an initial forecast of 14.02 million issued in October.

The rise was driven partly by a 29.1% rise in area to 1.79 million hectares following more favourable planting conditions.

Average wheat yields rose 12.2% to 7.8 tonnes per hectare.

The previous season's wet weather during the autumn planting window for wheat forced many farmers to switch to spring-sown crops such as spring barley.

Rapeseed production fell 5.5% to 981,000 tonnes with a decrease in planted area partially offset by a rise in yields.

The estimate was marginally above a previous forecast of 977,000 tonnes issued in October.

The planted area fell 19% to 307,000 hectares, far below the peak of 756,000 hectares in 2012.

The average yield was 3.2 tonnes per hectare, up from the prior season's 2.7 tonnes.

Problems controlling flea beetles, following a ban on some widely used insecticides, have contributed to the decline in area in recent years.

The ministry estimated the barley crop at 6.96 million tonnes, down 14.2%.

French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union last month reached their lowest for a November since the 2018/19 season as shipments to China slowed following a brisk October, Refinitiv data showed.

Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the 27-country bloc totalled 802,700 tonnes in November, the fifth month of the 2021/22 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.

Carlsberg Malaysia has launched a new variant for its French premium wheat beer range, Kronenbourg 1664, The Star reported on December 17.

Called the 1664 Rosé, the pink-amber brew has a refreshing taste with hints of fruity raspberry.

Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini said the 1664 Rosé — which comes in the brand’s iconic bottle — gave customers more choices of wheat beer.

“The 1664 is the leading brand in our portfolio and has been growing steadily these years in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Encouraged by its performance, especially in the off-trade, we wanted to share this new flavour with the public,” he said during a media launch at Envi Skydining in Menara TA One, Kuala Lumpur.

Carlsberg Malaysia marketing director Caroline Moreau shared the beer brand’s humble beginnings.

“Being the only beer in the world named after a date, 1664 represents the year the brewery was founded in Strasbourg, France.

“Kronenbourg 1664 is brewed with premium ingredients like the unique Strisselspalt hops.

“With the addition of 1664 Rosé to the already popular 1664 Blanc, we promise that more good taste and moments can be shared with friends,” she said.

After China, Malaysia is the second country in Asia to launch the 1664 Rosé.
