Canada: Barley supply at 7.81 mln tonnes down sharply from 2020-21
|
For 2021-22, Canadian barley supply is revised lower from last estimate, reflecting a decline in total production as reported by Statistics Canada (STC), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its December report.
Total supply is now projected at 7.81 million tonnes (Mt), down sharply from 2020-21 and a record low level, primarily due to production issues in Canada’s Prairie provinces, as well as record low carry-in stocks.
STC confirmed in its final production report for 2021 that the 2021 barley crop is the smallest on record in Canada. Set at 6.95 million tonnes (Mt), the final Canadian barley production for 2021 is
down 3% from STC's September estimate of 7.14 Mt and well below 10.74 Mt a year earlier. The decrease in national production was largely driven by the much smaller 2021-barley crop in Western Canada, compared to 2020, because of the severe drought on the Prairies. In the final 2021 production report, barley production in Western Canada for this year is estimated at 6.55 Mt, down from the September estimate of 6.82 Mt and well below the 10.35 Mt a year earlier.

USA, GA & CA: SweetWater Brewing acquires Green Flash Brewing and Alpine Beer brands
|
Atlanta, Georgia-based SweetWater Brewing has acquired the Mira Mesa, California-based Green Flash Brewing, and Alpine Beer brands, the Beer Street Journal reported on December 20.
SweetWater is not acquiring the facility or brewing equipment, that will apparently remain with current owners to be put up for sale or other entrepreneurship opportunities.
Green Flash and Alpine beer production will move to SweetWater’s newly opened Fort Collins, Colorado facility.
Just over a year ago, SweetWater Brewery was acquired for $300 million dollars by Aphria, a Canadian-based cannabis company. The deal in part due to the brewery’s successfully ‘420 Strain’ of beers created using cannabis terpenes (organic smell compounds).
Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
SweetWater Brewery is ranked 11th overall in annual production according to the Brewer’s Association.

USA, WI: Lion’s Tail Brewing Company to open its second brewery in Wauwatosa
|
It’s been a great year in Milwaukee-area brewing and next year is looking like it might be even better. On December 17, Lion’s Tail Brewing Company—an excellent brewery located in Downtown Neenah that has developed something of a retail presence in and around Milwaukee—announced the “officially official” news that it will be opening a second brewery and taproom, the Milwaukee Record reported.
The new location will be in Wauwatosa.
Here’s what Lion’s Tail had to say about the development on Facebook today:
“We are now the official owners of the former Wisconsin Garden & Pet Supply buildings located at 8520 W North Ave in Wauwatosa! This second brewery and taproom (yes – we’ll also be brewing in Tosa!) will be open some time in 2022!… But don’t ask us when just yet.
“We can’t wait to join such a fantastic Milwaukee beer community and an incredible neighborhood like the one in Wauwatosa. We’re proud to be a small part of the growth we expect for this city in the years to come!

USA, NJ: Tall Oaks Farm and Brewery gets Howell's Planning Board approval
|
The New Jersey craft beer scene is cropping up in Howell, the Asbury Park Press reported.
On Thursday, Dec. 16, Howell's Planning Board approved Tall Oaks Farm and Brewery, planned for 450 and 454 Colts Neck Road.
The operation will be a sibling business to Mike and Chelsey Ziolkowski's Bradley Brew Project in Bradley Beach, which opened in 2018.
It will be Howell's second craft brewery, following the opening of Seven Sons Brewing on Route 9 in May.
Set to be built on 5 acres of undeveloped land, Tall Oaks is hoping to open in the next 12 to 18 months, Chelsey Ziolkowski said.
The site will house a 3,000-square-foot brewery and a farm with a hop yard for use in the brewery's beer. Other items for use in the beer, including fruit, vegetables and edible flowers, will also be grown on-site.
Tall Oaks' site plan includes a pergola for outdoor seating, as well as an outdoor pavilion that could be used to host events.
The Ziolkowskis said their original plan was to open a farm brewery before pivoting to their downtown concept for Bradley Brew Project.

Canada, BC: Fern + Cedar Brewing now open in Qualicum Beach
|
A new brewpub offering “small batch, locally crafted beer for the community and visitors of Qualicum Beach” is now open, the Canadian Beer News reported on December 20.
Fern + Cedar Brewing has been launched by a team that includes head brewer Wes Bain and executive chef Michael Sproul, and officially opened its doors on Thursday, December 16th.
The initial beer line-up includes Four Poles Pale Ale (5.2% abv), Megaphylls IPA (6.3% abv), Moonlit Dark Ale (5.3% abv), Fiddlehead Red Ale (5.5% abv), and The Ripening Saison (5.8% abv), with a promise of more to come soon. A selection of guest beers, cider, wine, and spirits are also available from the bar.
The food program features a “modern West-Coast Gastropub menu” with dishes including Sichuan shrimp & lobster, buttermilk fried chicken, cod & chips, and BBQ lamb shoulder.
Fern + Cedar Brewing is located at 680 Berwick Road South in Qualicum Beach, and is open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Sunday to Thursday, and 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

USA, FL: Good Liquid Brewing Co. launches in Sarasota County
|
Good Liquid Brewing Co. has opened at Waterside Place, Lakewood Ranch's first village in Sarasota County, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported on December 21.
The brewpub also has a sister location, which opened four years ago, in Bradenton's Fountain Plaza on 14th Street West. Joe Guli, a chef who once worked with Wolfgang Puck and is currently CEO of the Sarasota-based Tableseide Restaurant Group (Libby's, Circo), partnered with Mike and Sandra Krail, co-owners of the original Bradenton Good Liquid Brewing Co., in the new venture.
The Waterside Place location has seating for 175 inside and out on a large patio. The brewpub’s philosophy is “life is too short to drink bad liquid” and the brewery’s success is achieved by following a core brewing process while adding creative ingredients, according to a press notice.
Among the many beers offered are the Mixed Berry Jalapeno Cream Ale, The Fruity Bits Milkshake IPA and the Coconut Key Lime Sour. Brewmaster Mike Krail and his team of brew tenders also make cocktails from a wine and spirits assortment. The lake-front pub's food menu includes black and blue sliders, avocado egg rolls, cast-iron meatballs, smoked ribs, beer can nachos and full entrees.

Canada, BC: Brewing August proposes to set up shop near Granville Island in Vancouver
|
A craft brewer has proposed to set up shop near Granville Island in Vancouver, the Georgia Straight reported on December 21.
Brewing August plans to use 1614 West 3rd Avenue into a brewery, tasting room, and retail location.
Diamond Group Architecture Inc. filed a development application with city hall on behalf of the brewer.
Brewery owner and operator Tate Lillies wrote an operational letter as part of the application, and stated that Brewing August will be a “welcome addition to the neighbourhood”.
The lounge is proposed to operate seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to midnight.
The establishment’s menu will include hot and cold food.
Lillies wrote that the venue is suitable for enjoying product brewed on site, but will not operate like a nightclub or pub.
Online, Brewing August describes itself as “one of the best good-vibes beer pouring in Vancouver”.
“Beer with all the qualities of August: full sun, long days and filled with possibility,” the brewery says about its brand.

USA, CA: Monkish Brewing takes over former Anaheim Brewery facility
|
When Anaheim Brewery owners Greg and Barbara Gerovak announced they were hanging up their well-worn brew boots and mash paddles for retirement, local beer lovers were in shock. After hearing who would soon be taking over the brewery in the historic Packard dealership building was an even bigger bombshell…none other than the kings of the hazy IPA, L.A.’s Monkish Brewing, the Orange Coast Magazine reported on December 17.
“I feel like this is a changing of the guard,” noted a relaxed Barbara Gerovak at Monkish’s soft opening, on the same patio where she and husband Greg served up pints over the last decade. “We’re so happy another brewery took over the spot, it could have been changed to something else,” she later said.
“When we were looking for a location, our main focus was a patio,” says co-owner Henry Nguyen, rubbing his head. “Being in Orange County is one thing, but I’m learning that being in Anaheim is a whole other thing on its own,” he continued. Indeed, Anaheim now has around twenty breweries, almost half of all breweries in the entire county.

|
Paradigm Brewing Co. opened December 15 in the Tomball Business and Technology Park at 2130 S. Persimmon Lane, Tomball, the Community Impact reported.
The brewery is open for lunch and dinner, and has a bar and restaurant serving food such as pretzels, wings, sandwiches and burgers.

USA, NY: Medusa Brewing Company brings Wild Hare restaurant, brewery to Hudson
|
Six years ago, Medusa Brewing Company opened and brought fresh beer and a popular taproom to downtown Hudson, the MetroWest Daily News reported on December 20.
Now, the group is taking on a new project, Wild Hare, which will feature gourmet pastries and coffee, a lunch and dinner menu heavily influenced by European cuisine and wood-influenced beers.
“It’s a little more sophisticated for us,” said co-owner Keith Sullivan. “It’s a part of us that we’ve always had inside of us, but we haven’t been able to explore it.”
Wild Hare will be located at the Landing at Hudson Mills, 43 Broad St. It will be in the anchor location with a 5,000-square-foot interior along with another 1,000 square feet of outdoor dining space, Sullivan said.
Unlike Medusa Brewing Company, which only offers limited food, Wild Hare will be a full restaurant, with chef Ryan Boya being hired to head the kitchen. He was previously a chef at the Liquid Art House in Boston and ArtScience Culture Lab & Café in Cambridge.
“Food will be a major draw,” Sullivan said.

USA, SC: One of Greenville’s craft beer pioneers Quest Brewing Co. closed down for good
|
It was just a year ago that Don Richardson had renewed hope that the craft beer brand he and partner Drew Watts had so lovingly built would get a new chance at success. But that light turned dark earlier this year when plans to shift ownership and take on a new investor fizzled, The Greenville Online reported on December 16.
While Richardson had been working vigorously behind the scenes to rebrand Quest and to reinvigorate the company, now, he says, he must let it go.
Quest Brewing Co., one of Greenville’s pioneers in the craft beer industry, is closed.
The announcement earlier this year of the closing was temporary, but now Richardson says it’s permanent.
“It’s sad times,” Richardson said, his normally positive demeanor a bit less so.
Richardson is trying to look to the future, one that would keep him immersed in the Upstate’s local beer scene.
“I think we’ve got some really talented brewers in this city and some great people behind the breweries here,” Richardson said with a smile.

Japan & Myanmar: Kirin Holdings may seek government help to resolve dispute over Myanmar beer partnership
|
The top executive of Kirin Holdings Co. said on December 21 the company may ask the Japanese government for help to resolve a dispute over ending its beer business partnership with a Myanmar military-linked entity, Kyodo News reported.
Kirin Holdings President and CEO Yoshinori Isozaki said in an interview with Kyodo News that his company may need such support, depending on the ruling by a Yangon district court after its partner Myanma Economic Holdings Public Co. unilaterally filed a petition last month to liquidate a joint venture called Myanmar Brewery Ltd.
Isozaki said he hopes the dispute on the venture, the biggest beer company in Myanmar owned 51 percent by Kirin and 49 percent by the Myanmar entity, can be resolved by the end of June.
"I believe the government did not strongly urge us to invest only to feign ignorance when things go badly," the 68-year-old said, referring to a 2014 investment treaty between Japan and Myanmar.
The Tokyo-based company entered the Myanmar market in 2015 following the agreement that protects investors from becoming stripped of their investment assets and as the Southeast Asian country moved toward democratization.

Australia: Australian Tax Office makes brewers’ corporate tax information public
|
For the first time since the ATO made corporate tax information public, Carlton and United Breweries’ owner has paid corporate tax, whilst Lion also upped its contribution rates, the BrewsNews reported on December 22.
The Australian Tax Office released its seventh annual Corporate Tax Transparency report last week for the 2019-2020 financial year, which revealed the corporate tax positions of Australia’s biggest companies.
For the past six years, according to the releases, neither of CUB’s previous owners, AB InBev or predecessor SAB Miller, paid corporate tax.
However, for the 2019-2020 year, CUB’s then-owner AB InBev paid corporate tax amounting to just over A$113 million, accounting for 30 per cent of its taxable income.
The disclosures showed that ABI had returned a total income of A$4.1 billion, down slightly on the A$4.4 billion it made in the previous year of the report. Taxable income was calculated at A$377 million.

UK: 70% of total beer consumption by 2025 expected to be of premium or super-premium brands

One of the world’s biggest brewers says that customers are increasingly buying premium and super-premium beers, with the name on the bottle of more importance than ever, The Talking Retail reported on December 16.
Budweiser says that by 2025 it expects 70% of total beer consumption in the UK to be of brands classed as premium or super-premium, against 61.7% now.
Budweiser, which brews Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona, said that world beers are proving crucial in boosting sales.
Brand name matters even in alcohol-free beer, argued Budweiser, pointing to the success of its Budweiser Zero and Stella Artois Alcohol Free products.
Other factors have also boosted sales. Mark Wingfield-Digby, off-trade sales director at Budweiser, said: “Covid-19 had massive long-term implications on how Brits consume beer.
“As we look ahead to 2022 and beyond, premiumisation is our big bet.
“Combined with the increased momentum for at-home beer consumption, there’s a huge opportunity for retailers to drive sales through a robust premium line-up.”

Zambia: National Breweries’ second quarter margins eroded by high packaging and distribution costs

Delta Corporation says second quarter margins at its Zambian subsidiary, National Breweries (Natbrew), were eroded by high costs of distribution and packaging, the Herald reported on December 20.
The giant beverages company attributed the erosion of margins to the depreciation of the Zambian Kwacha prior to the coming in of the new Government.
But the Kwacha has appreciated following new President Hakainde Hichilema’s August 2021 election victory.
“Despite this, the appreciation of the Kwacha post elections resulted in a significant exchange gain which positively impacted the company`s loss after tax and loss per share,” the company said in a trading update.
The Zambian company expects its loss per share for the half year ended 30 September 2021 to be 84 percent lower than the corresponding period last year.
Natbrew produces, packages and markets traditional sorghum beer products in Zambia. Popular brands of its opaque beer are Chibuku Shake-Shake and Chibuku Super.
“The company recorded a 14 percent reduction in revenue due to the reduced volumes compared to last year as the Covid-19 restrictions in 2020 resulted in higher sales of some of the company’s packs.”

Australia & UK: Australia and UK sign free trade agreement
|
Grain Producers Australia (GPA) has welcomed the announcement of Federal Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister, Dan Tehan, signing the UK free trade agreement on December 17, the Grain Central reported.
GPA chief executive, Colin Bettles, said the Australian Government securing the deal, to remove trade barriers on farm exports, was good news for Australian grain producers and communities.
“When it enters into force, this deal will provide better market access to more than 65 million UK consumers. Duty-free quotas will be available immediately, with tariffs fully eliminated over four years, for Australian grains such as wheat and barley,” he said.
“Traditionally the UK has not been a big volume market for Australian grains, but this deal also delivers economic benefits by removing tariffs and restrictions imposed on other commodities such as sheep meat and wool, which many Australian grain producers often also grow, sell and export.
“GPA supports governments pursuing initiatives which strengthen fair trade and bolster market access, to help boost the profitability and sustainability of Australian grain producers.”
Mr Bettles said GPA also welcomed news the UK trade agreement would enhance access to skilled workers needed in the Australian grains industry, from Northern Hemisphere countries, by increasing the working holiday visa age limit

Chinese importers have made fresh purchases of French wheat and barley last week following a slide in prices, with around 10 large vessels thought to have been booked, five European traders said on Friday, December 17.
The volume was on top of another round of deals about two weeks ago and reflects ongoing Chinese import requirements in feed grains for livestock.
Last week’s sales were believed to comprise four to six cargoes of 2021 crop French feed wheat along with four to five cargoes of 2022 crop feed barley. The deals were for panamax vessels, meaning the total volume could reach around 600,000 tonnes, the traders said.

UK: Camden Town Brewery’s record supermarket sales fail to cure Covid hangover

Losses at Camden Town Brewery have ballooned as record sales at supermarkets failed to cure its Covid hangover, The Grocer reported on December 20.
Volumes in UK’s off-trade almost doubled in the year ended 31 December 2020. However, these sales were not enough to offset the lost trade at pubs, restaurants and other foodservice venues, where the Hells lager maker generates about 70% of its business.
Revenues slumped 20% to £41.4 mln, leading to operating losses widening from £6.1 mln in 2019 to £20.5 mln in 2020. Pre-tax losses increased by more than £15 mln to £24.7 mln, according to newly filed accounts.
Despite the challenges, Camden boosted its prominence with a major ‘Fresh as Hells’ campaign – with TV adverts running at half-time during the Champions League semi-finals and final. It said the exposure increased brand awareness by 65.3%.
Camden also launched its own online e-commerce shop selling beer and branded merchandise, which it said was “well received” by consumers.
The brewer, which was acquired by AB InBev in 2015, was fully integrated into its parent group in October 2021, as revealed by The Grocer at the end of last year.

Ukraine: Ukraine’s total grain exports up 22.2% so far this season

Ukraine has exported 29.2 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 22.2% from the same stage a season earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on December 17.
That included 15.3 million tonnes of wheat, 5.1 million tonnes of barley and 8.4 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.9 million tonnes of grain in clean weight this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 62.4 million tonnes from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The government has said grain exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.

Romania: Ursus Breweries will purchase 100% green electricity as of next year

As from January, Romania’s Ursus Breweries will purchase 100% green electricity mostly from ENGIE Romania, which operates generation units with a total installed capacity of about 113 MW, the Romania Insider reported on December 21.
The French group operates wind farms and solar parks located in the counties Galați, Brăila, Harghita and Teleorman.
In just six months, Ursus Breweries is expected to reduce its CO2 emissions by almost 4,000 tonnes, the equivalent of the carbon dioxide production of more than 1,700 vehicles over the same period.
Ursus Breweries is the largest beer producer in Romania. Currently, Ursus Breweries has 3 breweries: in Brașov, Buzău and Timișoara and a mini production facility in Cluj-Napoca. Ursus Breweries is part of Asahi Europe & International.
