USA: More than 9,000 breweries now operating in the United States
|
Even after the setbacks of Covid-19, the United States reached a record number of breweries in 2021. According to the Brewers Association, there are now more than 9,000 operating beer producers in the U.S., VinePair reported.
Announced in the Brewers Association’s “Year in Beer” report, that number includes 710 new breweries opened across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, offsetting the 176 that closed their doors. In 2021, the craft beer industry provided 400,000 total jobs, with 140,000 being those directly working at breweries.
The Brewers Association, a nonprofit trade association that “promotes and protects American craft brewers,” cites that federal economic relief programs were key to the resurgence of the industry. Key acts that helped, and that the Brewers Association lobbied for, include the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) and the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (CBMTRA). These funds helped offset the costs and damages from not only the pandemic, but the supply chain crisis endured this year, the report says.
A source of industry insights and data analysis, the Brewers Association predicted in an optimistic statement that craft beer production will exceed the levels of 2019 (finally) and that on-premise taproom and brewery sales will increase in 2022.

Bud Light is adding cola and orange soda to its seltzer, Mountain Dew is moving into the alcohol aisles and Molson Coors has a whiskey brand, CNBC reported on December 28.
In the hunt for growth, beverage companies are experimenting in new categories, blurring the lines between beer, soft drinks and spirits to become powerhouses fighting for consumers’ so-called “share of throat.” But some alcohol companies worry about the potential implications of such a change on the three-tier system, which has kept that industry alive — and legal — for 88 years.
In 2020, total beverage alcohol consumption rose 2% — the biggest gain for the industry in nearly two decades, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. Beer was the only category to see declining volume, true to a yearslong trend. Consumers reached for hard seltzer cans or mixed their own cocktails while stuck at home during lockdowns and maintained those habits this year.
“There are premium dollars going into ready-to-drink canned products in a cooler, and there’s growth again,” said Barclays analyst Lauren Lieberman at Beverage Digest’s “Future Smarts” virtual conference in early December.

USA, PA: Well Crafted Beer Co. to take over Ambler Beer Co.’s space
|
Lansdale brewery Well Crafted Beer Co. will expand to a second location next year, taking over the space currently occupied by Ambler Beer Co., which plans to close, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported on December 23.
Well Crafted Beer, which opened in summer 2018, is acquiring Ambler Beer's brewery and taproom assets at 300 Brookside Ave, Building 19, Suite E, located at the mixed-use campus Ambler Yards. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The move will more than double Well Crafted Beer’s production, said Nica Bellenger, who handles the company’s marketing and sales. Its existing Lansdale location at 310 Madison St. has a seven-barrel brewing system. The new Ambler outpost comes equipped with an additional 10-barrel brewing system.
Well Crafted Beer looks to use the expanded brewing capacity to ramp up its retail sales to restaurants, bars and bottle shops in the surrounding area, and potentially widen its geographic reach as well, Bellenger said. The company declined to share its annual production.

Canada, AB: Alberta's craft breweries feeling a can crunch
|
Nothing is safe from inflation, and this time it's coming for your beer, CBC reported on December 26.
Many of Alberta's craft breweries are feeling a can crunch caused by difficulties sourcing enough aluminum, and it's affecting their bottom line.
Blair Berdusco, executive director at Alberta Small Brewers Association, says the COVID pandemic, in part, caused an aluminium can shortage.
"COVID is definitely a significant factor in all of it. Between access to aluminum to actually make cans, and then supply chain issues, as many industries are facing right now, definitely compounding the issue recently," she said.
Adding to the issue, she said, are other beverages shifting to cans — like water and ready to drink cocktails — while more brewers shifted to canning their own products as tap room service wasn't available during lockdowns.
"A lot of people had to move to cans when they weren't necessarily planning to," she said.
"It's not specific to Alberta, it's worldwide, everyone is looking for more cans to put their products in," Berdusco said.
The cost per can has increased in the past three years, adding up to thousands of dollars a year, even for smaller breweries.

USA, VA: Route 7 Beer Co. aims to open its doors in April
|
A new brewery, taproom and restaurant is in the works for a prominent spot in Ashburn that will give it great visibility from busy Route 7. Not coincidentally, it’s called Route 7 Beer Co. and will feature a huge bar, patio seating and large garage doors that will create an indoor-outdoor beer and food experience, The Burn reported on December 27.
Route 7 is coming to the Lexington 7 building on the north side of Route 7. It’s next door to the new Riverside Square shopping center, home to the Texas Roadhouse, the Oak Health Club and and a new Sheetz gas station and convenience store. It’s in the same building where The Ballpark, a baseball training and recreation facility, is under construction.
The Burn first learned that a brewery was in the works for this spot earlier this year, but we’ve been waiting for details to come out. Now we know a little more about the project.

USA, NM: Five Mountains Brewing coming to Albuquerque soon
|
Mesa del Sol residents won't need to leave the area for a pint come late 2022, The Business Journals reported on December 22.
Five Mountains Brewing is the first planned, on-site brewery at Mesa del Sol — the emerging housing development and business park just south of the Albuquerque International Sunport. The brewery, started by longtime friends Stephen Stone and Walter Schuler, will open in the Aperture Center in a 4,300-square-foot space at 5700 University Blvd. SE.
The inspiration behind the name comes from mountain ranges to the north, south, east and west, Stone said.
"We plan to be the flagship brewery but hopefully not the last," said Stone, who said he previously worked at Turquoise Trail Brewing before he and Schuler decided to team up for their concept.
Five Mountains will serve its own beer, in addition to beer from local breweries and spirits from distilleries. Stone hopes to have between 20 and 30 different taps for customers to choose from. Five Mountains will also have a prep kitchen to serve sandwiches and coffee.
"We're looking forward to a first-rate operation to complement our many other uses at Mesa del Sol," said David Campbell, CEO of Mesa del Sol LLC.

USA, TN: Cherry Street Brewery opening on Chattanooga's Cherokee Boulevard
|
If you go looking for the Cherry Street Brewery in downtown Chattanooga, you won't even be on the correct side of the river. You will, of course, find Cherry Street Tavern downtown, but the two are not connected in any way. If you go looking for the original Cherry Street brewery or the original restaurants and taprooms bearing the Cherry Street name, you won't even be in the right states, Yahoo News reported on December 24.
Cherry Street Brewery founder Nick Tanner started homebrewing while living in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Cherry Street. As he expanded his operation, he kept the name.
Almost a decade ago, he partnered with his sister Alisa Wall to open a Cherry Street Brewing Grille & Taproom in Cumming, Georgia, and the Cherry Street Brewpub in Alpharetta, Georgia.
The two have expanded the operation north to Chattanooga and will be opening a brewery and taproom in the old 11,000-square-foot Heaven & Ale brewery space on Cherokee Boulevard next month.
"Our father [Rick, owner of Tanner Chicken Rotisserie] has been in the restaurant business for 35 years, so this is not new to us," Nick Tanner said.

|
Nashville-based Bearded Iris Brewing has announced it will join Atlanta’s Scofflaw Brewing in shared ownership under IndieBrew, a new brewery collective that Scofflaw launched in October, GoodBeerHunting.com reported on December 23.
Similar to other umbrella groups that have teamed up breweries, like Artisanal Brewing Ventures and CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective, IndieBrew’s purpose is to consolidate specific business functions to give members a competitive advantage in areas of human resources, procuring ingredients, accounting, and sales teams. IndieBrew leadership says the group will add two or three additional breweries in 2022.
Bearded Iris CEO Kavon Togrye says any breweries that join the platform are expected to keep their founders in place. “We’re not interested in running someone else’s brewery. We are interested in upping the standards of all breweries involved,” Togrye says.
IndieBrew will be governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from all affiliated breweries, as well as independent members with no existing financial affiliations to those breweries.

Canada, BC: Highway 97 Brewery officially opens new location in downtown Penticton
|
11 months after it was first announced, Highway 97 Brewery has officially opened its new and improved location in downtown Penticton, the Canadian Beer News reported on December 22.
The new spot at 200 & 202 Ellis Street is situated across the street from Cannery Brewing and within a few blocks of Slackwater Brewing, Neighbourhood Brewing, and Bad Tattoo Brewing.
The 6,000-square-foot space will allow Highway 97 to expand its brewing capacity up to four times its previous output, and features a dining room and patio that can accommodate up to 132 customers, up from just 36 at the brewery’s original location.
A full line-up of Highway 97 beers are currently available on tap, including Czech Craft Pilsner (5% abv), Amber Ale (5.4% abv), High Alpine IPA (5% abv), and Rusty Muffler Red IPA (6.2% abv). The food menu is currently limited, but will be expanded to include more options in the new year.

USA, IN: Carson's Brewery to close down on December 31
|
Carson's Brewery on Evansville's North Side will close Dec. 31 after an eight-year run, the Courier & Press reported.
The COVID pandemic presented too many obstacles for the small business to overcome, owner Jason Carson said.
The business has four full-time employees. All have found new jobs that they'll start in 2022, Carson said.
Carson's Brewery received a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan for just over $100,000. That helped sustain the business for awhile, but Carson said COVID pressures were too great.
He said a major part of his business involved distribution, and that was stymied by COVID. Traffic also slowed at the brewery's 2404 Lynch Road address, which had a tap room, live entertainment and special events.,"
"People don’t come out like they used to," Carson said.
The Carson's Brewery property has been sold to Chem Group, whose facility is next door at 2406 Lynch Road. The transfer takes effect Jan. 1.

The Czech Republic: Head of mini brewers association believes boom of craft breweries is over
|
Over the past decade or so, the Czech Republic has seen something of an upsurge in small breweries. There are now about 500 mini-breweries across the country, with over 30 being established last year. However, the new head of the national mini brewers association says the trend has already reached its peak, the Radio Prague International reported on December 22.
While the Czech Republic’s mini breweries only account for over two percent of overall beer production, they have established a firm place on the market in recent years.
Many restaurants, which in the past only offered mass-produced brands, now offer a variety of craft beers on tap. There is also a growing number of specialised beer shops, where customers can sample a wide variety of special brews.
While microbreweries only produce up to 10,000 hectolitres of beer a year, they are essential in setting new trends on the market, says Michal Voldřich, head of the Bohemian-Moravian Association of Mini Brewers:
“Trends usually last for around five years, but they always leave a mark. One of the first trends were stronger, bottom-fermented beers. Top-fermented varieties, such as wheat beers, came into fashion around the year 2000.

Bangladesh: Government mulling production of beer at state-owned distillery Carew & Co
|
The government of Bangladesh has been mulling producing beer at the country's only state-owned distillery – Carew & Co (Bangladesh) Ltd – to meet the growing demand for alcohol in the country, the Dhaka Tribune reported on December 29.
Citing growing demand, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Saturday said a new unit would be installed at Darshana Sugar Mill in Chuadanga in order to double its production capacity.
Several highly placed sources at the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) said the aim of installing the second unit is producing beer, and some foreign companies have already shown their interest in this regard.
However, the officials refused to go on record as the beer production decision is still at the initial stage.
“Right now, we are not in a position to invest in a plant, but it can be established through a joint venture,” one of the sources said.
“The aim of the second unit is to produce beer because already Carew has a profitable liquor unit. One Bangladeshi Beer ‘Hunter’ is also selling goods in the domestic market,” he added.
In addition, BSFIC has already called for a tender to automate liquor production.

India: NCLAT stays order imposing Rs752 crore penalty on United Breweries
|
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has stayed an order passed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) which imposed a penalty of Rs 751.83 crore on United Breweries Ltd (UBL), the company informed the stock exchanges on December 24.
NCLAT has put a stay on CCI's order upon a condition of pre-deposit of 10% of the penalty amount imposed on UBL.
The company said it will comply with the directions and the said 10% amount "will be deposited through a fixed deposit receipt within stipulated time as mentioned in the order."
The order has come as a relief for United Breweries, which had moved the NCLAT earlier this month challenging the order issued by the CCI on September 24.
The CCI had in September this year penalised Carlsberg India, UBL, All India Brewers' Association (AIBA) and 11 individuals after around four years of investigation for alleged cartelisation and anti-competitive practices.
CCI had passed the final order against UBL, Carlsberg India Pvt Ltd. (CIPL), and SABMiller India Ltd, now renamed as Anheuser Busch InBev India Ltd (AB InBev), among other firms.
The antitrust regulatory, in its 231-page order, had also ordered the companies, individuals, and association to "cease and desist" from anti-competitive practices

Brazil: Ambev to build recycled bottles factory in Parana
|
Brazilian brewer Ambev SA will build a new factory in the state of Parana to produce bottles made of recycled glass, the company announced on December 23, saying it expected to invest 870 million reais ($153.9 million) in the plant, the Financial Post reported.
Ambev, a subsidiary of Belgium’s Anheuser-Busch InBev SA , said the deal was a bet on the development of so-called reverse logistics and the circular economy. The factory is expected to start operating in 2025.
According to Ambev, the announcement is in line with its goal of having 100% of its products in returnable or recycled packaging by 2025. The factory will produce bottles from glass shards collected by reverse logistics companies and cooperatives, the company said, adding that each bottle could be reused more than 20 times per year.
The new plant will be 100% supplied by renewable power, Ambev added.

India: United Spirits extends timeline for completing "strategic review" of its select popular brands by 3 months

Diageo-controlled United Spirits Ltd (USL) has extended the timeline for completing the "strategic review" of its select popular brands, by another three months till March 31, 2021, Zee Business reported on December 27.
The review of the selected popular brands, which consist of a portfolio of around 30 brands, will now be completed by March 31, 2022, informed USL in a regulatory filing.
"On February 23, 2021, we initiated a strategic review of selected popular brands. This strategic review is ongoing and is considering all options to deliver sustainable long-term profitable growth. The review is expected to be completed by March 31, 2022," USL said on December 27.
Earlier, on February 23, USL has said the strategic review is "expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year 2021".
This strategic review does not include the McDowell's or the director's special trademarks, USL had said earlier.
USL's popular portfolio comprises around 30 entry-level lower-priced brands, with an average consumer price less than Rs 400 for a 750 ml bottle and straddle whisky, rum, brandy, vodka and gin.
Under the strategic review, USL will therefore assess all options to continue this approach while taking into account the potential impacts of each.

Ukraine: Exports of cereals up 21.1% this season

Ukraine has exported 31.6 million tonnes of cereals so far in the 2021/22 season - which runs from July to June -, 21.1% more than on the same date of the previous season, data from the Ministry of Agriculture showed on December 29.
That figure includes 15.7 million tons of wheat, 5.2 million tons of barley and 10.3 million tons of corn, according to the data.
Agriculture Minister Roman Leshchenko said this month that the country harvested a record 84 million tonnes of clean weight grains this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.
The ministry has said that 2021/22 grain exports could include 24.5 million tons of wheat, 30.9 million tons of corn and 5.2 million tons of barley.
Ukraine’s exports last season included 23.1 million tons of corn, 16.6 million tons of wheat and 4.2 million tons of barley.
