USA: Constellation Brands reports Q3 fiscal 2022 results with full year beer business net sales growth now expected at up to 11%
|
Constellation Brands, Inc., a leading beverage alcohol company, reported on January 6 its third quarter fiscal 2022 results.
Despite difficult year-over-year volume comparisons, Constellation’s Beer Business posted depletion growth of more than 8%, driven by the continued strength of Modelo Especial and explosive growth from Corona Extra. Depletion volume selling days were flat year-over-year.
Modelo Especial beer achieved 13% depletion growth and continued to be the No. 1 brand in the high-end and No. 1 brand share gainer in the entire US beer category in IR dollar sales; Modelo Chelada posted 35% depletion growth and is now the No. 1 Chelada in the US beer market.
Corona Extra reported depletion growth of 11% and remained the No. 2 import share gainer and No. 3 brand in the high-end in IRI channels.
The beer business’ operating margin decreased 130 basis points to 41.3%, as benefits from favourable pricing and timing of marketing spend were more than offset by increased COGS driven by expected higher material and brewery costs, as well as increased depreciation.
Cases shipped exceeded cases depleted as distributor inventory levels began to rebuild during the quarter. Product inventories are expected to return to normal levels by the end of the fiscal year, as cases shipped are expected

USA, WA: Ice Harbor Brewing working on opening a new location in downtown Kennewick
|
A Tri-Cities favorite spot for grabbing a microbrew is getting a new home, the Tri-City Herald reported on January 5.
Ice Harbor Brewing is working on opening a new location in the old Welch’s Grape Juice plant in downtown Kennewick.
Ice Harbor is a 9-time winner of the Tri-City Herald’s poll for Favorite Tri-Cities Microbrewery/Distillery.
The new location, at 10 E. Bruneau Ave., will be on the second floor above a new indoor marketplace — the Public Market at Columbia Warehouse, set to open this spring.
The market, which will have a separate entrance, will be open Friday to Sunday throughout the year.
The indoor market stalls also will be joined by an event venue and commercial kitchen, according to the owners of the market.
The former juice plant has been empty since its last resident, J. Liebs Food, was sold in 2019.
Ice Harbor owners Mike Hall and Bill Jaquish were not immediately available this week to talk about their plans for the new location.
It will be less than half a mile to the east of their longtime flagship brewpub in a two-story grain mill. The distinctive landmark at 206 N. Benton St. sits next to the BNSF rail lines.

USA, CO: Windfall Brewing to open its doors on December 13
|
Windfall Brewing will make its full-tilt entrance to Colorado's beer scene on December 13, when the new brewery and restaurant opens its doors with housemade craft beer, a scratch kitchen and vintage pinball in the former Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery at 14694 Orchard Parkway in Westminster, Westword reported.
There will be at least four beers on tap and one seltzer to start with, including Puppies, an easy-drinking ale made with Pilsner malt, German hops and English ale yeast; Neapolitan Stout; and Brave Noise, a national collaborative pale ale that is meant to increase awareness about sexual assault in the brewing industry.
Windfall is owned by Abby Jeffers and Shawn Murray, who began working on the concept in 2018, shortly after Broomfield's Nighthawk Brewing, where Murray was the general manager, closed. Murray helped create an arcade-like atmosphere there, as well, but that idea will be expanded upon at Windfall with numerous games, including vintage ones like Pong and Double Up. There is even a Clawmaster.
Murray says that the brewery has "been a long time coming, and we are pretty proud of ourselves."

USA, WA: No Drought Brewing Co. launches in Spokane Valley
|
A local couple has brought their passion for craft beer to a Spokane Valley neighborhood, The Spokesman-Review reported on January 5.
Damon Netz and Magen Potter-Netz opened No Drought Brewing Co. in December at 10604 E. 16th Ave., adjacent to Northwest Pizza Co.
“It’s been amazing – more than we could ever have hoped for,” Damon Netz said of the neighborhood’s response to the brewery.
“A lot of people have come in and said they live a couple of blocks away and they’re just so excited to have a brewery like this close to their house within walking distance.”
The brewery has 16 taps, with nine dedicated to “mainstay” brews, including a Doppelbock, German IPA, Schwarzbier, Hefeweizen, Kolsch, Berliner Weisse, Pilsner, Altbier and West Coast Grizzly IPA.
The brewery also has ciders, kombucha and a cream soda on tap. It also sells beer in growlers and cans.
“A lot of what we’ll have on tap are German-style beers,” Netz said. “However, the West Coast Grizzly IPA has been the No. 1 seller almost every day.”
The brewery does not have a restaurant, but patrons are allowed to bring in food from the adjacent Northwest Pizza Co. and other establishments.
Netz said the idea to launch No Drought Brewing

USA: Constellation Brands to hike beer prices more than its typical 1% to 2% this year
|
Constellation Brands Inc., the maker of alcoholic drinks including Corona and Modelo, said it expects to hike beer prices more than its typical 1% to 2% this coming year due to rising commodity costs and a shortage of brown glass, Bloomberg reported on January 6.
Chief Financial Officer Garth Hankinson said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call on January 6 that margins in the core beer business may suffer in the coming fiscal year in part because of inflation in commodity prices. He still expects operating margins for the beer business to be around 39% to 40% over the long term.
The glass shortage is the latest hit for beer makers, who spent the last year talking about shortages of aluminum cans as people switched from drinking at bars and keg parties to drinking at home or outside. MKM Partners analyst Bill Kirk said in a November research note that while Constellation’s most-affected brand seems to be Pacifico, Modelo Negra beers also come in brown glass and the largest risk would be if glass availability became so severe as to limit sales of Corona or Modelo Especial.
“We are diligently working to address the brown glass shortage that is acting as a headwind,”

USA, WA: Camas Brewing Co. already pouring its beer in Camas
|
Eric Duensing’s desire to launch a brewery in Camas sprouted from his desire to launch a brewery in Seabrook, a small-but-growing tourist town on the Washington coast, the Camas-Washougal Post-Record reported on January 6.
It all started in 2009, when Duensing and a friend decided to enter the burgeoning food truck market in Washington D.C. That first venture, DC Slices, earned a reputation for serving residents the type of hand-tossed, thin-crust, fold-them-in-half pizza slices popular in New York City.
In 2014, Duensing and his DC Slices business partner moved to Pacific Beach on the Washington Coast, where they ran a wood-fired pizza food truck out of a 1930s Ford flatbed before opening Frontagers Pizza Co., a classic Italian restaurant, in 2016.
“Seabrook wants a brewery in their town, and I really wanted that contract,” Duensing said. “I said, ‘I need to learn how to do (run a brewery) if I want to be a viable contender for it.'”
Duensing’s dream came to fruition in December 2021, when his new brewery, Camas Brewing Co., poured its first beers at Camas Slices, the New York-style pizzeria he opened in January 2021.
“(Now that Camas Brewing Co.) is online, I can show Seabrook, ‘We have a functioning brewery

USA, CO: Black Shirt Brewing sells to new owners
|
Jimmy and Karen Dodson haven't been to downtown Denver much over the past decade or so, they haven't worked in the food and beverage industry before, and they're not that familiar with the craft beer scene. So the newly retired pair from Roxborough Park weren't sure if they wanted to make an offer on Black Shirt Brewing when they began looking for a brewery to buy and run as their next career, the Denver Westword reported on January 6.
But then they walked inside — and felt the vibe and met the staff.
"They have an incredible crew. We love them. If it hadn’t been for them, we wouldn’t have gotten involved," Jimmy says, adding that he and Karen spent a few months hanging out as customers first. "They work incredibly well together as a team, they're friendly, and the pizza is great. It's a winning combination."
In December, the Dodsons bought Black Shirt, at 3719 Walnut Street, from Chad and Carissa Miller, who started the brewery with Chad's brother Branden back in 2012, at a time when there were still relatively few brewery taprooms in Denver, and when this particular part of the River North Art District was far outside the boundaries

USA, IN: The Bloomington Brewing Company sold to new owners
|
The Bloomington Brewing Company, founded by Jeff Mease and Lennie Busch in 1994 welcomes new owners this week, Amanda and Jarrod Franklin of Bloomington. The brewery was the first “craft brewery” to open in Southern Indiana, and is the 3rd oldest craft brewery in the state, The Bloomingtonian reported on January 5.
Mease and Busch built the brewery adjacent to their restaurant Lennie’s, originally part of the Crosstown II shopping Center on E. 10th street. The restaurant debuted in 1989 and remained in that location—as Bloomington’s first brewpub—until Lennie’s moved to its present Kirkwood Avenue location in 2019. At that time, brewing operations were consolidated at the BBC production house on Bloomington’s west side.
Mease and Busch began considering new owners about 6 months ago, and they feel lucky to have connected with the Franklins, who learned about the brewery being availability from mutual friends. The Franklins approached a friend, Chris Welsh, along with Brian Graham and Mitch Ackerman of Indianapolis brewery Four Day Ray, and together formed an entity to purchase the Bloomington Brewing Company. Brewer Zech Algood, a longtime friend of the Franklins who has been a lead brewer at Upland Brewing for the last 7

USA, CA: Campus Brewing Co. going out of business
|
West Sacramento-based Campus Brewing Co. announced on January 5 that it is going out of business, the Sacramento Business Journal reported.
The brewery, located at 1520 Terminal St. in West Sacramento, was formerly known as Yolo Brewing Co. before it rebranded in 2020. It marketed itself as "an educational focused brewery."
In a social media post, the brewery said it would soon be shutting it doors, though it didn't elaborate on what prompted the closure. Representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment on January 5.
"We plan to maintain something close to our normal taproom hours as we attempt to sell as much of the remaining beer as possible," the Facebook announcement says.
Another area brewery also announced its planned closure on Wednesday. Dreaming Dog Brewery in Elk Grove said it would be closing at the end of the month after not being able to negotiate a lease renewal for its location at 2501 W. Taron Court.

USA, SC: Five Forks Brewing closing for good on January 7
|
Five Forks Brewing will be closing for good Friday, Jan. 7 at 9 p.m., the Upstate Business Journal reported.
The brewery, located at 2613 Woodruff Rd. behind Sidewall Pizza and Soul Yoga, made the announcement over social media.
“We would like to thank the community for your support this year however as of today we have closed the doors to Five Forks Brewing,” the brewery announced. “We will open for one last hurrah a $5 pint day this Friday 2 to 9pm — stop on in and say goodbye — it was a short run but a fun one. Thank you once again for letting us be a part of your community!”
The brewery was especially popular among local residents for its weekly trivia night. It opened in fall 2020, touting an outdoor space that stretched 225 feet long, enough “for you and your friends, family and dogs to enjoy and spread out,” according to an Instagram post the brewery made just before its opening.
Spencer Hines Properties, which handled sales for the Five Forks development, has not announced any plans for a replacement tenant for the location.

USA, CT: 30 Mile Brewing Company to close its doors this month
|
After five years of business, 30 Mile Brewing Company in Old Saybrook has announced that it will close its doors this month, The Greater New Milford Spectrum reported on January 6.
A statement by the ownership says that the brewery will host guests until its final day on Jan. 16.
"As a small business we are not immune to the challenging economic conditions of the past 2 years. At this point, it is not sustainable for us to continue on as we have," the statement reads. "We opened 30 Mile Brewing in 2016 with the goal of providing a community gathering space for people in the Old Saybrook area to enjoy craft beer. We feel over the past 5 years, we have accomplished that goal. We have met many amazing friends in our taproom and have tried to be the best possible partner to our community."
Located a short distance from the Old Saybrook Train Station, 30 Mile Brewing opened its doors in 2016. The idea was first brewed up in 2015 as a brainchild of Devon Landry, Justin Terribile and Luke Maynard.
The brewery concocts a number of eclectic brews with equally quirky names such as the "Zombie Cure American Imperial Stout" or

Hungary: Hungarian competition watchdog goes after beer giants, fast food chains
|
After a months-long grace period, the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) launched proceedings against Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, and beer producers Dreher, Borsodi and Heineken to enforce the new beverage procurements regulations, Telex reported via state news agency MTI.
Restaurants had until 1 August last year to bring their practices in line with new rules of the commercial code, which aims to clamp down on exclusive drinks contracts and encourage smaller drinks producers to enter the market.
Last year, the GVH strongly warned the companies now under investigation to prepare for the legislative changes in good time.
The market watchdog now alleges that KFC and Burger King are not compliant with the rules and continue to sell only one manufacturer’s products in certain beverage categories.
The competition authority now also said it thinks that three beer producers with significant market power, Dreher, Borsodi and Heineken, have exclusive contracts with certain pubs, going against the requirement that at least two different beer producers’ products be available on the shelves.

Ukraine: Barley exports in 2021/22 total 5.2 mln tonnes
|
Ukraine has exported 33.2 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 25.7% from the same stage a season earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on January 6.
The total included 16.1 million tonnes of wheat, 5.2 million tonnes of barley and 11.5 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Agriculture minister Roman Leshchenko said last month the country harvested a record 84 million tonnes of grain in clean weight in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.
The ministry has said the 2021/22 exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million of corn and 5.2 million of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million of wheat and 4.2 million of barley.

Japan: Asahi Group making the first ‘full renewal’ of its flagship Super Dry beer brand
|
Japan's Asahi Group Holdings said on January 5 it was making the first "full renewal" of its flagship Super Dry beer brand since its debut in 1987, modifying the taste and look of the brew, Reuters reported.
The brewing method will be tweaked to give Super Dry a more distinctive, "faint-hop" aroma, the company said in a release. The trademark silver logo and can will also get a makeover, with the changes to go into effect from mid-February.
The changes are a response to increasing competition in Japan's shrinking domestic market, the company said.
Asahi Group is Japan's biggest beer maker with a near 40% share of the market.

World: Corona launching non-alcoholic beer containing 30% of the daily value of vitamin D
|
Global beer brand Corona is launching Corona Sunbrew 0.0%: with the non-alcoholic beer containing 30% of the daily value of vitamin D in a 330ml serving, the Beverage Daily reported on January 5.
The brand will debut in Canada this month: followed by the UK later this year and then other key markets in Europe, South America and Asia.
The ‘innovative, first-of-its-kind, non-alcoholic beer’ contains a 30% daily value of vitamin D (as per Canadian guidelines) to link in with the brand’s outdoor ethos, coming in at 60 calories per 330ml serving. The Sunbrew is made by extracting alcohol from Corona Extra and then blending the non-alcoholic beer with vitamin D and natural flavors.
“As a brand that was born on the beach, Corona embraces the outdoors in everything we do, because we believe that outside is where people best disconnect and relax. The feeling of the sun is one of the things that people love most about the outdoors and the Corona brand is always innovating to remind them of that feeling,” said Felipe Ambra, Global Vice President for Corona.
“Now, we’re excited to offer consumers Corona Sunbrew 0.0%, the first non-alcoholic beer with
