Mexico: New Constellation Brands brewery to be built by a major river
|
A new Constellation Brands brewery, diverted to the Gulf coast state of Veracruz in Mexico after a dispute over water use, will be built by a major river, a government official said on January 7, Reuters reported.
The plant is part of planned investment in Mexico of up to $5.5 billion by the U.S. producer of beer, wine and spirits through 2026.
Constellation will build the plant by the Rio Papaloapan in central Veracruz, presidential spokesperson Jesus Ramirez told Reuters.
“As a government we’re not opposed to private investment, nor foreign investment. They’re welcome as long as they respect the environment … and Mexican laws.”
Constellation, whose brands include Corona beer, Robert Mondavi wines and Svedka vodka, has yet to decide on a site or budget for the plant, company spokesperson Nina Mayagoitia said.
Constellation said this week it would build the plant in Veracruz. A dispute over water access prompted it in 2020 to halt construction of its largely completed brewery in the arid, northern border city of Mexicali.
Area residents said the brewery, which had cost hundreds of millions of dollars, threatened their water supply and rejected it in a referendum promoted by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The referendum result caused widespread consternation among

USA: Molson Coors to sell California brewery, stop production of Saint Archer brand
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company said today it will stop production of its Saint Archer brand and sell its San Diego-based brewery and taproom to Kings & Convicts Brewing Co., which owns the Ballast Point brand, the MarketScreener reported on January 10.
As part of the deal, Kings & Convicts will take over Saint Archer's 100,000-barrel capacity Miramar brewery and adjoining taproom, as well as its 1,200-square-foot taproom in Leucadia, Calif. Kings & Convicts, headquartered in San Diego and Highwood, Ill., plans to retain operations and retail team members at both locations.
Terms were not disclosed.
Molson Coors will retain the rights to the Saint Archer brand, though it will cease packaging and distributing its brands effective immediately.
"The Saint Archer team has built a distinct brand that has a very loyal following in Southern California. Unfortunately, the overall business has struggled to grow despite investing significant resources behind its production and commercialization," says Paul Verdu, vice president of Tenth & Blake, Molson Coors' U.S. craft division. "We'll maintain ownership of the Saint Archer brand as we determine the best long-term plan and remain focused on growing our regional breweries that continue outpacing home-market competitors."
Saint Archer was founded in 2013 and acquired in 2015 by

USA, NC: Ponysaurus Brewing Co. to open a second location in Wilmington
|
Durham's Ponysaurus Brewing Co. has announced plans to open a second location in Wilmington, North Carolina. The building, located at 214 Market St. in the heart of downtown Wilmington, will be home to a pizzeria and terraced garden restaurant, FsR reported on January 7.
In the new space, Ponysaurus Brewing Co. will keep the building's existing charm while transforming the back parking lot into an outdoor garden space to offer outdoor seating, drink, and food. The restaurant will offer an extensive list of Ponysaurus Brewing Co. beers, including their core, seasonal, specialty, and barrel-aged beers.
Ponysaurus Brewing Co. has not set a firm opening date, but hopes to open by summer 2022.
"We're more than just beer and pizza," says Ponysaurus Brewing Co. co-owner Nick Hawthorne-Johnson. "Our Durham taproom is a community gathering space that hosts everything from fundraisers and run clubs to local artist pop ups, trivia nights, and more."
Though this is Ponysaurus Brewing Co.'s first location outside Durham, they aren't new to the Wilmington scene; their beers can be found on draft and in cans at local businesses such as Manna, Cape Fear Wine and Beer, Brewer's Kettle, and more. Ponysaurus Brewing Co. beer is available throughout the Carolinas and Tennessee.

USA, IA: Field Day Brewing Co. seeking building approval in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor
|
The owner of Tin Roost, 30Hop and other popular restaurants in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor is seeking approval from North Liberty to start building his next business venture: Field Day Brewing Co., the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported on January 9.
Brian Flynn's new venture, a microbrewery, cleared its first municipal hurdle when the North Liberty Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the site plan application last week. It is proposed to be a 20,910-square-foot complex on 3.9 acres of land located at 925 and 945 Liberty Way.
The renderings show a large building with a falcon and the name "Field Day Brewing Co." emblazoned on the side with a large outdoor patio space out back. The outdoor space will face a pond that adjoins the Liberty Centre neighborhood.
"There's a lot of development in North Liberty right now, and we feel that being a part of that and helping North Liberty grow is going to be a big opportunity for not just us, but the whole city," Flynn said.
In an interview with the Press-Citizen, Flynn said he and his business partners hope the microbrewery reflects other buildings in the area with its design, much like like Tin Roost, which will be virtually

USA, NC: Topsail Brewing Company looks to open its doors by summer
|
Located in Sneads Ferry, on the outskirts of North Topsail, a new craft brewery will launch in 2022, as the owners of Rick’s Restaurant are preparing to pull permits and clear land behind the sports bar. They’re making way for a 2,400-square foot brewery and taproom, according to Rebekah Pearson, with a goal to open Topsail Brewing Company by summer, the Port City Daily reported on January 10.
Pearson is the bar manager at Rick’s — an island favorite her family has owned and operated for almost two decades. She said preliminary plans will have Topsail Brewing constructed on 4 acres of land off Highway 210, near Northshore Country Club.
“Me, my grandfather and my dad decided about two years ago our community needs a brewery,” Pearson said.
The closest one is Salty Turtle, 12 miles south in Surf City.
Pearson said her dad, Rick Bumgardner — owner of contracting company Alliance Construction Corps that built about 100 houses on the island years ago — and her grandfather, Peter Matz, are Miller Lite drinkers. Pearson is into craft beers, like hefeweizens, sours, stouts and IPAs. Topsail Brewing will create a blend of all the above.
“But we want to have a really solid pilsner,” Pearson

USA, ME: Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company breaks ground on new production facility in Bangor
|
A dream nearly eight years in the making finally became a reality last month, when Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company purchased a 1.3-acre waterfront lot from the city of Bangor, and broke ground on a brand new production facility adjacent to its original pub and restaurant off Main Street, the Bangor Daily News reported on January 10.
The deal, funded in part by Bangor Savings Bank and finalized on Dec. 3, 2021, will see Geaghan Brothers construct a much larger facility than its present brewing site in Brewer, which will close in March alongside its Brewer tap room.
“Having all of our operations in one location will make everything much, much more efficient,” said Andrew Geaghan, co-owner of the brewery and restaurant with his uncles, Peter and Pat Geaghan. “We’re really sad to leave Brewer, because they have been so accommodating and welcoming. But this is a huge step for us, and we’re incredibly excited about it.”
In addition to the production facility, the expansion will also see Geaghan’s construct a large patio for the restaurant and bar to allow for greatly expanded outdoor seating during the warmer months.
Andrew Geaghan said that all brewing production will be moved to Bangor by mid-March, and the

USA, OH: Arrogant Goat Brewing launches in Bucyrus
|
Being enthusiastic about new businesses is part of Jessie Furner's job as executive director of the Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce, the Telegraph-Forum reported on January 9.
But she seemed a little extra-enthusiastic at Friday, January 7's ribbon-cutting for the city's new nanobrewery, Arrogant Goat Brewing, 125A E. Rensselaer St.
"Finally, finally, finally, after 201 years of existence, we have a nanobrewery in Bucyrus!" she said, kicking off the event. The crowd of roughly two-dozen people crowded into the tap room applauded.
Furner thanked the business' three owners, Mark Burke, David Jones and Zach Osborn, for their hard work in making the nanobrewery a reality.
"I know that we're all really excited, but you guys have worked so hard putting this together," she said to the trio. "This is a dream from what, 2017, 2018? You've really put a lot of time and heart into this, and not only you guys, but your families."
Burke spoke next.
"We're just excited to get open, excited to be a part of this community," he said. They look forward to working with the chamber and the county's economic development team. Plans for a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, or DORA, will help bring people downtown, he added.

USA, IA: Textile Brewing Company expanding with new location in Atkins
|
Textile Brewing Company out of Dyersville is expanding with a new location in Atkins. The brewery already has a taproom in Cascade as well. For Atkins the brewery will mean a second option for eating out, KCRG reported on January 7.
The town of around 2,000 people is less than 20 miles west of Cedar Rapids and has been growing.
”Just in the last 10 years we’re experiencing a 23% growth,” Kate Robertson explained, Executive Director with Benton Development Group.
Robertson helped apply for a $100,000 Community Catalyst grant through the state to help turn an old apartment building on Main Avenue in Atkins into Textile Tap Haus. The city of Atkins then matched the amount through financial and in-kind contributions.
“This will be the bar,” Preston Geerts pointed out. Geerts will be the manager of Textile Tap Haus in Atkins.
”I’m really looking forward to meeting the people here,” he said.
The brewery will feature 20 taps as well as cider options and a 30 foot long bar. There will be food as well. The brewery is known for it’s pretzels and flat bread pizzas. It will become a second option for locals, and others to eat out.
”The town really needs a place for people

USA, NH: Kelsen Brewing Co. eyeing relocation to Manchester
|
Kelsen Brewing Co. in Derry wants to relocate to Manchester after being forced to move because of an acquisition by the state associated with a new exit to be built off Interstate 93, the Yahoo News reported on January 10.
In all, 35 properties in Derry and Londonderry need to be fully acquired as part of the Exit 4A project, according to the state Department of Transportation. Dozens of other properties are subject to partial takings.
Kelsen is among several businesses in the 80 N. High St. building.
The two major government acquisitions in Derry include the North High Street building and 9 Madden Road, a mixed-use commercial building, according to Derry Town Administrator David Caron. No stand-alone businesses have been impacted, he said.
"We do know a large number of businesses being displaced in Derry that were able to relocate in the town of Derry," he said. Many were contractors or other trade shops that didn't require prime real estate.
So far, the state has not had to pursue a formal eminent domain process, although the term is often used.
One of the most prominent properties is operated by the Salvation Army, which agreed to sell.
"They are actively seeking new locations," Caron said.

The Netherlands: Heineken workers to go on their first strike in about 25 years
|
Dutch trade union FNV said Heineken NV brewery workers are planning to go on their first strike in about 25 years after an ultimatum to reach a better labor agreement expired on January 11, Bloomberg reported.
Employees from breweries in Den Bosch and Zoeterwoude and workers from Heineken’s soft drink supplier Vrumona in Bunnik are set to start the stoppage on Friday, January 14, according to the FNV, which called for a pay beyond a 1.5% increase this year and 2% for next year.
FNV’s food industry representative Niels Suijker said in a January 11 statement that the wage increase was “far too little” and remains below the level of inflation. He added that it was a “shame” that Heineken had not responded to the FNV’s calls for changes to the collective labor agreement which affects 1,250 workers at the company’s supply units.
Heineken said the brewer pays about 14% higher than other fast-moving consumer good companies in the Netherlands. It said its final offer, which includes a collective wage increase of 3.5% in two years, could rise to about 6.5%.
“These are challenging times and Heineken is being hit extremely hard by the pandemic,” the brewer said in an emailed statement.

Europe: AB InBev’s five largest breweries in Europe to become carbon neutral by 2028
|
Brewing giant AB InBev has pledged that its five largest European breweries – including those in Jupille and Leuven in Belgium – will be carbon neutral by 2028, it announced on January 7, The Brussels Times reported.
“The term ‘net zero’ refers to the balance between the amount of emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere,” the group explained in a statement, adding that its ambition is to achieve net-zero emissions in its entire value chain by 2040, Belga News Agency reports.
The first AB InBev breweries to achieve neutrality will be those of Magor and Samlesbury in the United Kingdom, in 2026. The Belgian breweries of Leuven and Jupille and the Bremen brewery in Germany will follow in 2028. In total, this would reduce annual CO2 emissions by 110,740 tonnes – equivalent to the emissions of almost 35,000 cars, the group says.
To achieve this, the company plans to change its energy sources – focussing on renewable energy – and improve energy efficiency.

South Africa: Large alcohol producers struggling to satisfy demand due to supply chain issues
|
South Africa’s large alcohol producers are struggling to satisfy demand, which is hitting tavern owners hard, News24 reported on January 11.
South African Breweries (SAB) confirmed to Fin24 that due to “supply chain constraints” it can’t deliver all customer orders, while Distell, which produces Savanna, Hunter’s and Klipdrift, says it is experiencing "severe" glass shortages, as well as a shortage of aluminium, used in the production of cans, and corks.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Nhlanhla Mbhele had no choice but to shut down his 15-year-old tavern, Oskido247, in Empolweni after struggling to find product to sell.
Like many other people who sell liquor, Mbhele sourced most of his supply from producers SAB and Distell. His biggest money-makers were beer brands Carling Black Label, Castle and Hansa, all sold by SAB, and popular cider Savanna, from Distell.
But he has been struggling to get these products from the big providers.
“I closed down my business, there’s nothing I can do, because customers wanted alcohol and I couldn’t provide it to them. It was a mockery [of the customers] because you [for instance] want [Carling] Black Label and I didn’t have it, you wanted Savanna and you couldn’t find it,” he said.
The lack of communication from both SAB and

Middle East: Several craft breweries among reasons to visit the Levant now
|
There are plenty of reasons to visit the Levant, the region comprised of Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, and Jordan: its rich cuisine, pristine beaches, and Phoenician, Greek, and Roman archaeological sites, to name a few. Beer, however, may not be on that list—but it should be, Afar.com reported on January 10.
Several craft breweries have opened in Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan in the past decade, overcoming bureaucratic challenges—from high taxes on alcohol to restrictions on importing ingredients or equipment—and carving out space in Muslim-majority markets, where many don’t consume alcohol and some even refuse to do business with those who produce it.
Prior to this shift, liquor stores, hotels, and bars in the region stocked Heineken, Corona, and the occasional pilsener from a local brand with a foreign parent company, like Almaza in Lebanon. The new wave of regional craft breweries offers something the big brands never could: high-quality, small-batch brews infused with local flavors and personality.
“It’s like a revolution,” says Rafat Houary, owner-operator of Wise Men Choice Beer, a home-based microbrewery that opened in 2015 in the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour. Houary now delivers his brews to cafés, restaurants, and hotels in neighboring Bethlehem and repeat customers throughout Palestine.
